3Welcome to Berlin.

Success Comes From Within

As the global economic crisis becomes ever deeper, the pres-sure on national and international value added networks has increased dramatically in recent months. As the key indicators show, the difficult economic environment in which industry and trading companies are operating impacts the entire value added chain and has particularly serious implications for the service providers. Companies in industry, trade and the logistics service sector must now critically review and if necessary revise their internal processes and business strategies. By focusing on what happens “on the inside”, companies can often organise their structures and processes in such a way that they are able to un-derpin their long-term competitiveness in this turbulent business environment.

Against the backdrop of increasing international integration, joint action and cooperation with partners along the value added chain is essential if companies are to respond flexibly and effec-tively to changing market conditions. Logistics can play a key role in achieving this goal – by connecting interfaces, ensuring the responsible use of resources and creating leeway for innovation. This means that, in both operational and strategic terms, logistics is central to the future competitiveness of today’s companies.

The 26th German Logistics Congress provides the perfect setting for the international exchange of knowledge and experience in

the plenary sessions, in special-topic sequences and on company tours. The parallel special-topic exhibition showcases innovations and logistics solutions. Congress participants can enjoy an inten-sive networking experience during the three days of the event, which provides the ideal opportunity to make new – and build on existing – business contacts and the perfect setting in which to debate and discuss one-on-one potential strategies to meet the current challenges. Let yourself be inspired, let other participants share your knowledge, and take new ideas back with you to your company.

Welcome to Berlin.

A conference and a gala evening shortly before the anniversary of a historic date: 20 years ago, on November 9, 1989, the wall between East and West Berlin fell and the borders were opened. What better reason to “bring history back to life”. At the begin-ning of the festive gala evening, Dr. Joachim Gauck will recall the events prior to, dur-ing and following the reunification of Germany. Gauck is a theologian and served as the Germany government’s Federal Commissioner for the Records of the State Security of the former GDR from October 1990 to 2000. A co-founder of the “New Forum” in Rostock, he was already actively campaigning for political change in the former GDR and played a key role in shaping what has become known as the Peaceful Revolution.

Since 1945 at the very latest, the history of Berlin has been inextricably linked with the United States of America, this year’s guest country at the German Logistics Congress. It was the USA that launched the Berlin Airlift and supplied the people of Berlin with food and fuel in 1948/49. After the city was split in two by the Berlin Wall in 1961, also cementing the division of Germany and Europe into two parts, it was US President John F. Kennedy who helped to give the residents of the divided city courage and hope when he visited Berlin in 1963.

The Gala spans a broad historical range – in the “Sonnenallee”, one of the Berlin streets divided by the Wall. It was in this street that the ESTREL, one of Europe’s big-gest hotels, opened its doors in 1994. Live entertainment in the Las Vegas style, the popular ZDF television show “Wetten, dass...?”, the Bambi movie awards ceremony and world championship boxing fights have helped the hotel become the biggest event location in the

German capital.

You can “drink in” the very special atmosphere of this location from as early as 6 pm during the get-together before the official evening programme begins. Take advantage of this opportunity to build your personal contacts with experts from other sectors and other countries.

A further highlight of the Gala programme is all about trendsetting logistics: Jury Chairman Prof. Dr. Hans-Olaf Henkel will be presenting the German Logistics Award 2009 to a company that has put a holistic logistics solu-tion into practice in an outstanding way and has achieved provable success with its solution.

Following the compact stage programme at the Gala, you will have the chance to experience the variety and charm of the US metropolises New York, Washington, San Francisco and Las Vegas. With its mu-sicals, jazz, blues, country and rock music, it’s probably fair to say that US culture is unmatched in terms of musical and artistic variety.

New YorkFor centuries now, New York has been a melting pot of diverse cultural influences, a shining symbol of freedom and bound-less opportunity for each and every indi-vidual. Take advantage of the open-mind-ed, communicative atmosphere of the Big Apple: make new business contacts while sipping a Manhattan or a Cosmopolitan – or embark on a culinary journey through Chinatown.

WashingtonThe capital city and the seat of govern-ment, Washington represents “political America” – with the White House, the Capitol and the Supreme Court. The “statesmanlike” and stylish atmosphere is the perfect setting for interesting conversations to the accompaniment of unobtrusive music and international food specialities.

San FranciscoSan Francisco has its own unique flair, shaped by the conquests of Spanish pioneers and Latin American and Asian influences as well as by economic and social change spanning the arc from the Gold Rush to the Summer of Love. During the Gala Evening, you can sample exqui-site food like the Asian specialities with freshly prepared California Rolls at the Sushi stand.

Las VegasAt the end of your trip through America, be sure to pay a visit to the desert me-tropolis of Las Vegas and round off the evening with a touch of glamour, show business and entertainment. Don’t miss barbecue roast beef from Oklahoma Joe and freshly prepared hamburgers in this very “American” part of America.

Guest country, trendsetting projects

The United States of America and the Federal Republic of Germany have close trading and investment ties that are of key importance for national and global economic growth. The USA is Germany’s leading trade partner outside the EU and the biggest export market for German products behind France. A total 3,000 German companies in the USA employ almost 670,000 people – and more than

1,450 American companies in Germany provide over 600,000 jobs. This special economic relationship creates numerous opportunities for bilateral cooperation in the fields of business, trade and logis-tics. The status of the USA as this year’s guest country at the Congress underlines the importance of German-American eco-nomic relations.

Excellent logistics is characterised by efficient processes and the systematic gearing of these processes towards the needs of the customer: every year, BVL recognises excellence in this area by presenting the German Logistics Award to companies who have developed outstand-ing solutions in a real-world environ-ment. The award-winning concepts from the fields of industry, trade and logistics services are trendsetting concepts that have provably boosted the success of the company in question and are representa-tive of an integrated approach to logistics activities. The German Logistics Award is also designed to encourage new ideas and generate stimuli for the development of cross-sector logistics concepts to secure the competitiveness of companies in Ger-many and abroad.

At this year‘s award ceremony during the Gala Evening of the 26th International German Logistics Congress, you will have the opportunity to see for yourself which innovative concept ultimately won over the expert jury. The award-winner will also present the winning overall concept in sequence F1 on the Thursday of the conference and will outline the develop-ment and implementation of the concept as well as the results.

Your Congress volume helps you prepare effectively for the eventDeutscher Verkehrs-Verlag traditionally publishes a Congress volume for the German Logistics Congress containing a summary of additional and more in-depth information on the tracks and sequences as well as on the logistics market in the USA, this year’s guest country. Expert authors from the worlds of science and hands-on logistics put together key background information for Congress participants and enable them to gain a deeper understanding of the issues covered at the Congress. As an additional service, all Congress participants who register before September 30 will be sent the Congress volume in the mail in mid-October – before the event begins. This new service helps participants to prepare effectively for the topics and themes featured at the Congress and is made possible by the support of our sponsoring partner.

tutes, who generated the decisive stimuli and created the necessary framework for targeted research.

The jury decides on the winner of the award after the entries have been pre-sented at the German Logistics Congress.

Chairman of the Jury:Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Schenk, Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation (IFF), Magde-burg, Member of the Scientific Advisory Board, BVLJury members: Prof. Dr. Ludger Brüll, Vice President Supply Chain & Logistics, Bayer Technology Serv-

Close cooperation with real-world logis-tics experts and interdisciplinary objec-tives are two of the characteristic features of successful logistics research, an area that has developed into an independent scientific field in recent years.

With the aim of promoting innovation in the logistics field, scientists in different specialised disciplines and with different levels of experience work together and document their research findings in pub-lications, dissertations and postdoctoral theses. BVL’s Science Award for Logistics is presented in recognition of research projects that make a special contribution to the process of transfer between prac-tice and science. Ideally, the award-win-ning projects should already have been implemented in the real world or should be in the process of implementation.

In this way, BVL rewards the work of young scientists and also recognises the support provided by the supervising insti-

ices, Bayer AG, Leverkusen, Member of the Research Council, BVLDr.-Ing. H5 Europe and the Future of Transatlantic Relations Potsdam I+III 12:55

Dr. Joschka FischerFormer German Foreign Minister,Berlin

“The election of Barack Obama to the office of US President heralds the start of a new era in the Transatlantic relationship. The foreign policy of the new administra-tion is geared towards multilateralism and partnership – in stark contrast to our experience of the last eight years. But at the same time Europe is in the midst of a leadership and constitutional crisis following the ‘No’ vote on the EU Constitution in the Netherlands, France and Ireland. How will the Transatlantic relationship develop in the coming months and years? What role will the new German government play in the EU, and which political issues will shape the Transatlantic relationship in a world rocked by the global financial crisis?” G

W1 Robot Workshop Wednesday, October 21, 2009Tessin III (limited no. of places, no registration)

14:30-16:30

What are the advantages and requirements when it comes to using robots in the fields of order picking, transshipment, warehousing and transportation? The requirement and performance profiles for technical logistics are becoming more demanding all the time. Standardisation, coordinated process chains and integrated IT are the precondition for the exploita-tion of untapped productivity potential. Talk to the following experts about the latest trends and application experiences in a session chaired by Dr. Hanspeter Stabenau, Honorary Chairman, BVL, Bremen:

ó Torsten Glander, Manager Operation, BLG in.add.out. LOGISTICS GmbH & Co. W2 Network Workshop Thursday, October 22, 2009Tessin III (limited no. of places, no registration)

09:30-11:00

Is holistic network optimisation a utopia or will it soon be reality? In recent years, many models have been developed for net-work optimisation, collaboration and supply chain event management, complete with the corresponding software concepts. It is frequently the case, however, that only idealised chains are optimised as opposed to real networks. In a session chaired by Dieter Bock, Partner, TransCare AG, Wiesbaden, Eastern Europe Representative, BVL, find out about new approaches and work with others to determine which developments are already being put into practice and which ones will be realised in years to come. Added stimuli will be supplied by:

ó Hans-Jörg Hager, President, UCS (Unternehmer-Colloquium Spedition), Bremenó Dr.-Ing. Stefan Wolff, CEO, 4flow AG, Berlin, Chairman of the Research Council, BVLó Karl-Heinz Immoor, Managing Director, emLogistics GmbH, Würzburg

Potsdam – a different perspective Cecilienhof Castle became known throughout the world as the venue for the Potsdam Conference from July 17 to August 2, 1945. The conference entered the history books as the last and longest summit held by the victorious Allies: the USA, Great Britain and the Soviet Union. Tread in the footsteps of history – visit the memorial to the Potsdam Treaty and the former residential quarters of the Crown Prince William and Cecilie, for whom Emperor William II had Cecilienhof Castle built. After your visit, you can stroll through the charming and varied Dutch Quarter and enjoy lunch in the “Fliegenden Hol-länder” (Flying Dutchman) restaurant.Thursday, October 22, 2009, 09:30-15:30

Berlin’s history and contemporary art 20 years on from the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Bernauer Straße street provides a vivid illustration of life in a divided city. Footage of people escaping through the windows of houses in this eastern part of Berlin directly onto the street with its pavement in the western section of the city went around the world. This is where the “Chapel of Reconcil-iation” was built after German reunification, and the chapel is today part of the memo-rial site. In the later part of the morning, you can gain some insights into the future of Berlin as the city of contemporary art during a visit to a private collection.Friday, October 23, 2009, 09:30-13:00

One of the main goals of BVL is to promote a better and broader understanding of logistics in the public arena. The aim is to let peo-ple know about the fascinations of logistics – and this is the idea behind “Logistics Day”. This nationwide day of action took place for the second time in 2009 under the motto “ Logistics paves the way!” Around 25,000 people who are interested in logistics took the opportunity to obtain information on and gain insights into our exciting industry at 289 events throughout Germany. The success of the event is also reflected by the 600 plus reports in the print and online media as well as on radio TV.So why not join the action on April 15, 2010, when companies from industry, the trade sector and logistics services will once again be showcasing the many facets and aspects of logistics activities to the general public – and when logistics institutes and training institutions will be presenting their research projects and courses. Any company or institute active in the logistics field can take part with its own event.

Interested? You can find out more at the “Logistics Day 2010” stand in the lobby of the Hotel InterContinental; updated information is also available on the Internet at www.tag-der-logistik.de.
