BioRegional's vision is of thriving regional economies where we meet more of our needs from local, renewable and waste resources, enabling people to enjoy a high quality of life within their fair share of the earth's resources, and leaving space for wildlife and wilderness. We call this one planet living.

Our strategySue Riddlestone, Director

BioRegional’s real-life projects show how we can produce what we need and live high-quality lives while consuming a fair share of the world’s resources. We aim to show that sustainability can be easy, attractive and cost-effective.

This Strategic Plan covers the two year period from 2010 to 2012. It sets out our strategic objectives, which are focussed on creating a set of working examples and the stories around them. We will communicate these during 2012 when the Rio2012 Earth Summit takes place in Brazil, and the ‘One Planet Olympics’ takes place in London.

BioRegional’s unique role is to work with partners to create real-life demonstrations that show what a sustainable or “one planet living” future looks like. We communicate the stories and results of these projects to help change policy and practice.

If everyone in the world consumed as many natural resources as the average person in the UK we'd need three planets to support us. If we all lived the average American lifestyle, we'd need five planets to support us.

The One Planet Living framework helps people and organisations to examine the sustainability challenges that they face, and to develop solutions to help them live and work within a fair share of our planet's resources.

2 Zero waste

Our strategic objectives are organised into five themes:

One Planet Communitiesworking in partnership with developers to build new sustainable communities in North America, China, UK, South Africa.

One Planet Regionsworking in partnership with local authorities to help local people, businesses and council services across a local authority region to achieve one planet living

One Planet Companiesworking in partnership with organisations that are aiming to achieve one planet living in their own operations, and that are helping their customers to achieve one planet living

Bioregional production systemsdemonstrating bioregional production systems and whole supply chains in three priority footprint areas: food, energy and construction

Policy and communicationcommunicating BioRegional’s work to help achieve BioRegional’s vision and objectives by influencing policy and practice, and increasing our profile with key audiences

We aim to build on BedZED and One Brighton to show that new communities that allow residents to achieve one planet living can be possible anywhere in the world.

To achieve this we will facilitate development of at least one One Planet Community on each of four continents. We will focus on countries where we have already made commitments and progress:

China • South Africa• North America• UK ( focusing on London 2012 and BioRegional Quintain projects).•

These will be mixed-use communities of some scale (circa 2,000 homes), and will include shops, schools and other community facilities. By March 2012 our aim is for each to be part completed, with people living and working there and a visitor centre in place, in order to achieve our policy and practice change goals.

Where we have already worked on a project in a country outside our areas of focus we will continue to pursue that opportunity if appropriate. Where opportunities for other new communities arise, we will follow these up only if we have the capacity to work on them without diverting resources from delivering the four core communities.

One Planet CommunitiesWe will work with partners to build new One Planet Communities internationally on at least four continents by March 2012 to demonstrate that one planet living can be attractive, cost effective and possible anywhere in the world. We will use lessons from these exemplars to influence industry practice and change national policy in the sector in at least one and up to three countries by March 2012.

In the Hackbridge area BioRegional will prioritise measures relating to energy-saving retrofit and energy generation, the physical environment, the local economy and community engagement. The target is that leading residents are enabled to reduce their carbon and eco-footprint by 50%, with average reductions of 20%.

We will work with Sutton Council to develop a monitoring plan and offer support on three focus areas: delivering zero carbon council buildings, sustainable procurement and embedding behaviour. These are key to delivering the one planet action plan for Sutton Council’s operations.

Beyond our flagship project in Sutton, we aim to work in partnership with five local authorities by 2012 to retrofit one planet living into a region. Our objectives include :

setting up an annual conference and best practice sharing network for current and • prospective One Planet Regions

developing a toolkit for use by local authorities and their partners to mainstream one • planet living on a regional level

bringing about one national level policy change in this area•

continuing to influence and work on the design and delivery of the UK government eco-• towns and eco-quarter initiatives, informing industry best practice, government policy and local authority delivery.

One Planet RegionsWe will work in partnership with the London Borough of Sutton to retrofit the one planet living approach into the local authority’s operations and to the existing local authority region, with a pilot area in Hackbridge to have achieved average 20% reductions in carbon and eco-footprint by March 2012.

By 2012 we aim to be working with companies from each of the following areas:

consumer-facing companies1.

business to business2.

small and medium sized enterprises.3.

By working across these areas, we aim to build on our existing links with companies of various sizes and across a number of industry sectors. This will enable us to utilise the wealth of technical skills, knowledge and expertise BioRegional holds. We aim to demonstrate truly sustainable business operations and so advance industry best practice and influence policy.

To meet our objective, BioRegional will aim to work with these companies to:

understand and calculate company impacts•

develop a bespoke One Planet Living Sustainability Action Plan addressing common • international targets for companies

audit the company’s progress on a biannual or annual basis to track progress against their • One Planet Living commitments.

In addition we will look to work with consumer-facing companies to cultivate their public facing work, strengthen their sustainability communications and develop their brand value.

One Planet CompaniesWe aim to have formed sustainability partnerships with three companies, embedding the One Planet Living principles into their operations and customer offerings and with demonstration initiatives in place by 2012. These companies will act as inspiring examples of sustainability – they must commit to reducing the impacts of their operations to a truly sustainable level by 2025.

Where possible we will focus this work in Sutton or the wider bioregion to support our One Planet Regions objective. Specific projects will include:

the One Planet Food project, creating a sustainable food supply chain in the region•

defining the delivery model and creating a demonstration area of energy efficiency and • energy generation as part of a zero carbon retrofit in the Hackbridge area by March 2012

promoting a sustainable wood-fuel supply-chain in and around South London•

sustainable lifecycle approaches to construction in the region, including the Re:BUILD • building materials re-use centre project.

Activity will focus on at least one practical demonstration project in each of the three footprint areas with measurement of results against business as usual. We will also publish recommendations for industry and policy change based on successful examples or insurmountable barriers.

In addition we will continue to develop our energy technology and materials knowledge so we can continue to provide guidance to our key partners and develop new demonstration projects.

Bioregional production systemsWe aim to develop demonstrations of one planet living approaches and bioregionalism across supply chains for the provision of goods and services in the priority footprint areas of food, energy, and construction by March 2012.

We aim to use communications to increase the impact of the projects that we are involved in. By disseminating the results of our work we influence government policy-makers and business leaders, and enable them to make decisions that help to achieve a sustainable future. Our policy and communications objectives include:

promoting one planet living as a key message framework to be used in the build up to the • Rio2012 Earth Summit

campaigning to integrate the one planet living approach and principles into the final • declaration, treaties or commitments that emerge from the Rio2012 Earth Summit

opening two One Planet Experience visitor centres - in Sutton and at the Olympic Park - • which use the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to inspire behaviour change among community leaders and Olympic and Paralympic athletes

continuing to develop online tools, footprint calculators and good practice reports to help • organisations and individuals sadopt sustainable working practices and lifestyles

increasing BioRegional’s profile among key audiences (such as government, business and • funders) to help us to continue and expand our work.

Policy and communicationsBy communicating BioRegional’s real life projects and one planet living approach, we aim to influence industry practice and bring about international policy change. Our ambitious objectives for 2012 include influencing the outcome of the Rio2012 Earth Summit, and using the London 2012 Olympic Games to showcase one planet living.
