27JUNE 2017 CORVETTE DREAMS: WHAT’S AHEAD IN 2018 … AND A LITTLE

FARTHER DOWN THE ROAD (C8!) via Hagerty By: Don Sherman

Nirvana will descend upon the Corvette crowd in 18 months . Chevy is celebrating the Corvette’s 65th bi rthday with a lavish 2018

model range, a few product

upgrades, and a special Carbon 65 edition. That sets the stage for the

new ZR1 coming this fall with an expected 750 horsepower and s tate-of-the-art aero tech. I ’m convinced

this rev up of America ’s favori te sports car is an ingenious ploy to dis tract us from the mid-engine design that will green flag the eighth

generation (C8) well before Corvette turns 70. I toured the Bowling Green, Ky., manufacturing plant in hopes of catching a few hints of what the future will bring. Roughly 1,000 workers produce 40,000 or so

Corvettes per year at this million-square-foot facility sprawled over 212 acres . In 1980, GM took over the

factory originally constructed by Chrysler for its Airtemp division. The

ci ty of Bowling Green was so eager to put the abandoned property back to work that i t gave GM a 99-year

lease for a buck a year. To pass the baton without

interrupting the flow of Corvettes, both GM’s antiquated St. Louis plant and i ts new Kentucky factory produced C3 models during the summer of 1981. In addition to every C4 through C7 Corvette to date, Bowling Green also built 15,640

Cadillac XLR sports cars. The 2018 Corvette lineup consists of the base Stingray, plus Z51, Grand

Sport, and Z06 upgrades , each available as a coupe or convertible,

all offering three distinct trim levels and scores of options . From the $56,490 base coupe to the $84,490

Z06 convertible, there’s something for anyone seeking a hot sports car

at a high-value price. For ’18, the s tandard Corvette wheels are an inch larger in diameter: 19s in front, 20s in back; five different designs are offered. Magnetic ride control is now a stand-alone option while HD digi tal radio

becomes standard equipment. The Performance Data Recorder, the rear-view camera, and the head up

display have all been improved and there are revisions to the Corvette’s

color palette and interior trim details. Only 650 Carbon 65 edition models will be buil t to salute Corvette’s evolution from the 300 Polo White

six-cylinder/automatic roadsters sold in 1953. This $15,000 package, offered on Grand Sport and Z06 models , includes ceramic matrix gray paint and competi tion sport seats plus a carbon fiber rear spoiler, rear-

quarter ai r intakes , and s teering

wheel rim. A console plaque confi rms each Carbon 65 Vette’s spot in the 650-car sequence.

Covert invasion On a hot June day, I blended in with

tourists who pay $10 per head to see how Chevy fulfills Corvette dreams. Walking a mile or so of each car’s 7-mile, 3.5-day-long trip through this

beehive of activi ty is a fascinating experience every ’Vette fan should enjoy (according to my tour guide, 50,000 folks do so per year). Conveyors move components and partly finished cars hi ther and yon at a line rate of 0.09 mph. The plant is

tidy though hardly pris tine, and it is nicely ai r-conditioned. While no part is manufactured at Bowling Green,

supercharged V-8s , aluminum space frames , and complete Corvettes are

assembled here in a building with a footprint equivalent to 18 football fields .

On this 11-hour shift, the planned output was 185 cars to make up for

Memorial Day time off. Final 2017 Corvettes were interspersed with the fi rs t 2018 models . I spotted nei ther ZR1s lurking in the shadows nor any evidence of the mid-engine C8 Corvette. Bowling Green securi ty is so tight that both

cameras and note taking are s trictly forbidden. My fai r-to-partly cloudy crystal ball

The hallowed ZR code allegedly s tood for Zora Racer (in reference to

patron saint Zora Arkus-Duntov) when i t fi rs t appeared on 53 1970-72 C3 Corvettes . The badge returned

during both C4 and C6 eras with a total of 11,623 cars built, fi rs t with

Lotus-designed 5.7-liter 32-valve V-8 engines , then with a supercharged 6.2-liter pushrod V-8 delivering 638 horsepower. My educated guess is that the 2018 ZR1 will break cover at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin’s Road America race track

in conjunction with the August 6 Continental Ti re Road Race event. The photo op of the s treet ZR1s

juxtaposed with Corvette C7.R racers is too golden an opportunity for

Chevy to squander. The new ZR1 engine will benefi t from the same direct fuel injection and variable valve timing found in the Corvette Z06’s 6.2-li ter LT4 V-8.

Factoring in a significantly larger Eaton Twin Vortices Series supercharger and higher capaci ty ai r-to-liquid intercoolers should enable 750 horsepower. While speculation associated the LT5 badge GM has

registered for this engine with a

DOHC design, that was, in my judgment, either a smoke screen or an “accidental” document error.

This year’s ZR1 will also be armed with special features to optimize its

aero performance: a means of accurately controlling each corner’s ride height to take maximum advantage of a variable front splitter

and an active rear wing flying high and wide. In March of this year, GM applied for a patent that describes this equipment in intimate detail. Considering that 2013 ZR1 lis t prices began at $112,000, I expect the 2018 edition will cost about $135,000.

That sounds like a heap of cash for a Chevy … until you consider value. Then i t’s Ferrari- and Lamborghini-

beating performance at less than half the price.

Bowling Green shuts down for three months this fall to implement $773-million worth of plant upgrades . Two

years were spent constructing new paint facilities and the engine shop

has been expanded to build Z06 and ZR1 V-8s . What’s not acknowledged is that the plant will continue C7 production after the mid-engine C8 design bows in 18 months. The wildest rumor is that a new North Carolina job shop will upfi t Bowling

Green-buil t C8s with custom interior and exterior trim. Considering that Chevy currently

owns more than 40 percent of the $50-100,000 sports car market,

flipping the switch from C7 to a radically different and more-expensive C8 would be insanity.

Instead, building both Corve ttes concurrently will allow the fai thful to

decide which best sui ts their fantasies. With 500 or so horsepower on tap and a base price below $70,000, the 2020 C8 should revolutionize the supercar category. As this new platform matures , Chevy will add

al ternatives to today’s LT-1 including an all-wheel-drive hybrid (possibly called E-Ray) and a twin-turbo DOHC

V-8 hammering out a remarkable 1,000 horsepower.

A warning: Don’t trust the spy photos of camouflaged C8 mules undergoing winter development tests. To hide the real design from our curious eyes , those prototypes

were constructed by Chevy’s racing partner, Pratt & Miller Engineering, using Daytona Prototype exterior panels . When your task is nurturing wild Corvette dreams, chicanery is to be expected.

The delicious dilemma due in 18

months is what Corvette shoppers with $70,000 burning a hole in their wallet will choose. Will it be a

Corvette Grand Sport with a traditional powertrain layout or the

mid-engine C8? Ladies and gentlemen, s tart your deliberation engines .

Courtesy, corvettebloger.com Each year the Gold Collection at Bloomington Gold salutes Corvettes turning 50 years old. This year recognized the 1967 Corvette. Since 1967’s are generally considered the pinnacle of the Corvette phenomenon, so it’s only natural that this Gold Collection was the biggest one to date. Nearly 40 significant final-year C2’s were displayed inside an air conditioned chalet at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The selection of cars included coupes and convertibles, racers and bone stock examples as well as unrestored survivors and impeccably restored Sting Rays.

As you’d expect in a display of this magnitude most cars had claimed every major judging award there is. NCRS Top Flights and Duntov’s were flanked by Bloomington Gold and Benchmark award winners. Powertrains ranged from small block, 327 powered cars all the way up to the legendary L88. Speaking of L88’s, the Gold Collection had 8 of the 20 produced on display last weekend. That’s the biggest gathering of 1967 L88’s in one spot that we’ve seen in several years. Probably our favorite L88 car was a white coupe known as The Flying Dutchman. That was driven, yes, driven to Indianapolis all the way from Miami. During the Thursday awards

ceremony it was mentioned that the Dutchman had consumed 134 gallons of petrol on its northbound trek. If we assume that to be a 1200 mile or so trip, that equates out to roughly 9 miles per gallon. Take that, Prius owners!

One of our other favorites was a maroon 427/390 radio delete coupe which was visiting all the way from Germany. The car was originally delivered in Switzerland before making its way to Deutschland. During the awards ceremony, the Sting Ray took home a Gold Certification.

Elsewhere in the Gold Collection resided the famous white McNamara 2,200 mile coupe, the DeLorenzo L88 in its race livery, and several COPO Corvettes. The 2017 Gold Collection at Bloomington was easily the best ever, but 2018 is going to give it a run for its money. Continuing the tradition of saluting L88’s in calendar years end in the number 8, the 2018 L88 Explosion is sure to be quite the experience. Mark your calendars now for the last full weekend in June so as not to miss next year’s Bloomington Gold event.

Enjoy our Gold Collection gallery below and be sure to tell us which 1967 Corvette is your favorite in the Comments section.

CORVETTE RACING AT LE MANS: Third Place, Dramatic Finish for No. 63 Corvette

Garcia, Magnussen, Taylor climb Le Mans podium in GTE Pro LE MANS, France (June 18, 2017) – Corvette Racing has experienced highs and lows in its 18 appearances at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. America’s premier GT racing team added to that Sunday with a dramatic third-place finish in the GTE Pro category with Antonio Garcia, Jan Magnussen and Jordan Taylor climbing onto the podium together for the second time in four years. The No. 63 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C7.R came back from an early-race puncture and clawed its way back into contention before barely missing out on its ninth class victory at Le Mans since 2001. Oliver Gavin, Tommy Milner and Marcel Fässler placed eighth in the No. 64 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Corvette C7.R. The trio had a fight-back of their own after Milner lost a wheel in the opening half of the race. It proved to be the only mistake by that trio but the four laps lost proved costly as the GTE Pro race was as much as a seven-car fight into the last six hours. "The GTE Pro battle was intense and certainly garnered the most attention of any race that I can recall," said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet U.S. Vice President, Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. "While our goal is always to win, it occurred to me that the Corvette Racing team has a never-give-up attitude. That element has been critical in many of the eight class wins in our Le Mans history. Jan, Antonio, Jordan and the entire 63 crew held together strong as a team and demonstrated incredible heart and determination all

race long. I also want to

thank the Corvette owners

and fans around the world for the support they have

been giving Corvette Racing

at Le Mans from 2000 until

today." The early puncture for the

No. 63 Corvette set the stage

for a phenomenal drive back

toward the front by the driving trio, the crew and

engineers. The crew

performed a perfect brake change near the 10.5 mark –

it took approximately 75

seconds to do all four wheels

– and the engineering team got the car back on the same

pit strategy as the race

leaders just after dawn Sunday.

From then on, the Corvette

asserted itself and cycled

through the lead up until the final hour. Magnussen and

Taylor alternated single

stints over the last three-and-a-half hours. The

Corvette Racing team

elected to take fuel only and

change to Taylor in order to gain track position over the

final 46 minutes. The two

cars ran within 1.5 seconds of each other until the final

lap.

The next event for Corvette

Racing is the Sahlen’s Six Hours at The Glen on

Sunday, July 2 from Watkins

Glen International in Watkins Glen, New York.

CORVETTE RACING AT WATKINS GLEN: Podium

Garcia, Magnussen f ight

back for third in GTLM;

Milner, Gavin salvage top-five finish

WATKINS GLEN, New

York (July 2, 2017) –

Corvette Racing’s Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen

placed third in the GT Le

Mans class at the Sahlen’s

Six Hours of The Glen on Sunday – a nice boost in

their run for the GTLM

Driver’s Championship. The duo in the No. 3 Mobil

1/SiriusXM Chevrolet

Corvette C7.R extended their

points lead, and Chevrolet maintained its lead in GTLM

Manufacturer’s points.

Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner, driving the No. 4

Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet

Corvette C7.R, finished fifth

in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s

annual trip to Watkins Glen

International. The team had hopes of scoring a second

victory in four tries at the

historic New York road

course. Garcia, Magnussen and the

rest of the No. 3 Corvette

squad clawed back from an early spin to contend for

Corvette Racing’s fourth

consecutive win in GTLM

competition. Garcia and Magnussen steadily worked

their way back up the class

order and took the lead for the first time with less than

two hours to go. The No. 3

Corvette led twice despite

lacking the outright pace of the other GTLM runners.

Nevertheless, Garcia and

Magnussen were in position to sneak away with another

victory before the last of five

full-course caution periods

with 35 minutes remaining.

Gavin and Milner led in the

No. 4 Corvette at the

midway point and gave Corvette Racing a pair of

top-five finishes. More

importantly, the No. 4 team

led at the three-hour mark to claim maximum points in

the Tequila Patrón North

American Endurance Cup – a

competition in the WeatherTech

Championship’s four long-

distance races. There is little time to rest as

the Corvette Racing squad

now heads to Canadian Tire

Motorsport Park to finish off a back-to-back run following

last month’s 24 Hours of Le

Mans in June. The Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix at

CTMP is set for 12:05 p.m. ET

on Sunday, July 9. FOX

Sports 1 will air the race live starting at noon with live

audio coverage from IMSA

Radio and a Corvette Racing In-Car feed available on

[STOLEN] Cops Track Down Stupid Criminal Who Stole a C7 Corvette From Dealership By Mitch Talley/corvetteglogger.com

Photo Credit: Ron Lee / WBTV

Note to thieves : Stealing a C7 Corvette isn’t easy. Just ask the man who tried to drive

off in a new $71,000 Watkins Glen Gray Corvette coupe in Charlotte,

N.C., on Monday afternoon. The odds were s tacked against Domanique Mobley, 28, from the very beginning. Mobley had to show his ID to a salesman at Park Chevrolet on North Tryon Street before he even got the keys , so when Mobley jumped in the Corvette and drove off, the dealership already knew his name. Problem No. 2 for Mobley: The dealership called police, and the

Corvette was able to be tracked using the high-tech OnStar. That

allowed them to find out exactly where the s tolen Chevy was , and police soon found i t at the Columbus

Circle Grocery convenience s tore on Berryhill Drive in west Charlotte. Mobley apparently wasn’t up on all that new technology, so when officers arrived, he decided to flee the scene on foot, i ronically being nabbed on Freedom Drive after a short chase on foot. Mobley now faces charges of motor vehicle theft, possession of a s tolen vehicle, and resisting arrest. Maybe next time he should just get a

Corvette the old-fashioned, honest way: by saving up his money for a

down payment and financing the

rest if necessary. That way, he could enjoy driving America ’s best sports

car a lot longer.

Mecum’s Collector-Car Auction in Portland Achieves $7.9 Million Second-annual event topped by the sale of a 1968 Yenko Camaro WALWORTH, Wis. – June 21, 2017 – Mecum Auctions was in Portland this past weekend with an impressive lineup of 461 classic and collector cars. The two-day auction at the Portland Expo Center achieved $7.9 million in overall sales totals topped by a 1968 Chevrolet Yenko Camaro(Lot S125) that brought $395,000. The well-documented, four-speed Yenko certainly stole the show in its intense blue-on-black color combination and award-winning condition, but a rare 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle LS6 (Lot S130) was another auction favorite and demanded a high bid of $125,000. Plymouths and Chevrolets dominated the top 10, but a beautiful Hemi-equipped Desoto Fireflite convertible (Lot S134) also made the list coming in at $68,000. The complete top 10 sales at the Portland 2017 auction include (individual prices do not include buyer’s premiums):

BARRETT-JACKSON EXTENDS NORTHEAST AUCTION, SEES INTEREST GROW AMONG YOUNGER BIDDERS, HIGH DEMAND FOR CUSTOMS, TRUCKS June 26, 2017 Posted by Barrett-Jackson The extended, four-day auction sold 630 cars for $23.5M and hosted more than 72,000 guests UNCASVILLE, CONN. – June 26, 2017 –The atmosphere was electric as Barrett-Jackson’s extended Northeast Auction attracted thousands of registered bidders – including an increase of younger bidders – and surpassed the $94-million mark in total funds raised for charity to date. The Barrett-Jackson 2nd Annual Northeast Auction sold 630 vehicles, with sales totaling approximately $23.5 million at a 95.74-percent sell-through rate. 685 pieces of automobilia sold for more than $819,000, bringing the total sales to more than $24.3 million. Approximately 72,000 people attended this year’s auction, which was extended to four days based on the tremendous success of last year’s inaugural event. “We’re extremely grateful to our sponsors, consignors and bidders for helping make this year’s Northeast Auction another banner event,” said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “Several thrilling trends emerged, including a surge in participation by younger guests. On Friday we experienced the sheer excitement when a pair of

young teenagers sold a Bandit Trans Am (Lot #449). We also saw the demand for trucks grow, along with top-tier custom vehicles that had been professionally restored or modified.” The Barrett-Jackson Northeast Auction docket included a wide range of American muscle, European classics, exotics, sports cars and one-of-a-kind customs. The top sellers at the auction included: 2017 Ferrari 488 Spider (Lot #657) – $434,500 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback (Lot #709) – $407,000 1958 Dual-Ghia Convertible (Lot #699) – $269,500 1967 Chevrolet Corvette 427/435 (Lot #706) – $231,000 1966 Shelby GT350-H Fastback (Lot #665.1) – $220,000 1959 Dodge Custom Royal Super D-500 Convertible (Lot #691) – $220,000 The auction also claimed four new world auction sales records, including a ’53 Willys Wagon (Lot #319), a ’47 Indian Chief Motorcycle with Sidecar (Lot #352), a ’93 Land Rover Defender 110 (Lot #659) and an ’04 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Custom Pickup (Lot #714). In addition, the top-selling ’17 Ferrari 488 Spider (Lot #657) was the first ever to be sold at auction. “Our Northeast Auction has evolved into an exciting automotive lifestyle event that’s unrivaled in the region,” said Steve Davis, Barrett-Jackson president. “We’re also the barometer for the collector car market and are the first to identify changes in the market. We intentionally design our dockets to capitalize on these emerging trends and create the best

possible experience for our bidders.” Barrett-Jackson also passed the $94-million mark for total funds raised for charity with the sale of a “life-size” Hot Wheels® 2014 Transit Connect. The van was donated by Ford and sold for $50,000, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting the Darrell Gwynn Quality of Life Chapter of The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis. A ’96 Ford Mustang built by the students at the Jordan Vocational High School hammered in at $65,000 on Friday, with all proceeds benefiting Jordan High School’s automotive program. The Mustang originally sold at the Palm Beach Auction and was donated back by the winning bidders, Jeanette and John Staluppi, to spur additional funds for the school. Sales of automobilia items were also a favorite part of the auction among guests. Sales totaled more than $800,000, a 7-percent increase in sales over last year’s record-breaking auction. The top automobilia seller was Lot #7387, a mid-1950s Polly Oil restored service station fuel island with two original Bennett model #966 gas pumps, which sold for $24,725. The 10th Annual Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas Auction will be held Oct. 19-21, 2017, at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino. More information can be found online here. Full Barrett Jackson Results
