Sunday of Cheese Fare
"The Lord said; "If you forgive the
faults of others, your heavenly Father
will forgive you yours. If you do not
forgive others, neither will your
Father forgive you. When you fast,
you are not to look glum as the
hypocrites do. They change the
appearance of their faces so that
others may see they are fasting. I
assure you they are already repaid.
When you fast, see to it that you
groom your hair and wash your face. In that way no
one can see that you are fasting but your Father who is
hidden; your Father who sees what is hidden will
reward you." (Mt 6; 14-19)
Cheese Fare-farewell to cheese means that no dairy
products were eaten from this Sunday till Easter Sunday. In
the early Church, meat and cheese were seen as luxury
items. A more ancient name for Cheese Fare Sunday is the
'Expulsion of Adam from the Paradise of Bliss'. This
summarizes the entire preparation for the Great Fast. We
were created by God to be with Him in Paradise. Adam's
sin deprived him of this and he was expelled from Paradise
to a life of toil and exile on earth. The liturgical services
for this day describe Adam weeping outside the gates of
Paradise. During Matins and Vespers the celebrant stands
before the closed Royal Doors symbolizing Adam and
humanity outside the gates of Paradise. Jesus Christ, the
Savior of the world, through His death and

Resurrection, opened the gates of Paradise for us, and the
Church reveals to us the beauty of the Kingdom, makes our
life a pilgrimage to our heavenly homeland.
Today's Gospel tells us that there are two things we
must do in order to complete the Journey of the Great
fast- Lent. First, we must fast. Fasting is the ancient
practice that dates back to pre Christian times. Fasting is
practiced for the preparation of an event-Pascha/Easter, and
in atonement for one's sins, or those of the nation. Fasting
allows us to empty ourselves and fill ourselves with God
and God's spirit. We not only fast from food, but especially
from sin, gossiping, and in today's world we need to fast
from modern technology if it causes diversion and prevents
us from hearing God's voice.
Second, we must forgive. Forgiveness means we let go
of resentment and hurt because someone has offended us or
hurt us. In a way, forgiveness is like fasting because when
we let go of hurts, it empties a space in our heart where we
can meet God. "Turn to God, so that God will forgive
your sins." (Acts 3; 19) "If we confess our sins to God,
God will keep His promise and do what is right: God
will forgive us our sins and purify us from all our wrong
doing." (1 John 1; 9) Read Psalm 139 which speaks about
God's presence in our lives, and pray for people who have
hurt us.
'How good and how delightful it is when brothers and
sisters live in harmony. Now it is required that we forgive
each other. Let the right part of the church turn towards
the left and the left towards the right. Look well, brothers
and sisters, if there is someone with whom you personally
will require to make peace. And now let us mutually
forgive each other.'

Forgiveness Prayers
Lord God, Creator of' the universe and of the human race,
You Created us according to Your image and in the likeness
of Holy Trinity. Just as You are one God dwelling in three
Divine Persons, we, also, were created to live our lives in
peace and harmony. But we have strayed from Your divine
plan and have surrendered to self-love and discord in the
example of Cain who killed his own brother. We have given
ourselves to quarrels, divisions and wars amongst ourselves.
In spite of this, You have not abandoned us, but You sent
Your Only-Begotten Son to reunite us to You. He taught us
that we must forgive seventy times seven. He gave His life
that we may be one.
We ask You, Heavenly Father, send Your Holy Spirit
upon us, the Spirit of Peace and Harmony so that we who
are gathered here in Your Name may be good and merciful,
that we may forgive one another as You forgave us through
Christ Jesus, Your Son. As You glorified the Holy Martyrs
Borys and Hlib, who did not raise arms against their
brother, so too, take from us, today, every desire of venge-
ance and all anger.
Open our hearts, O Lord, and fill them with the spirit of
forgiveness, the spirit of peace and the spirit of love. For
You are the God of peace; You are True Love and to You
we render glory to the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit, now
and always and forever. Amen.

Introducing a new 8-week Study Program for all our Ukrain-
ian Catholic parishes in Metro area called Oremus: A Guide to
Catholic Prayer
Do you find it easy to pray? Is prayer an integral part of your day?
Do you hear God’s voice in your daily life, and know how to re-
spond accordingly?
For many of us, the answer to these questions is, “no.” We all
desire an intimate relationship with God. But, since learning to
“say our prayers” as children, we never moved beyond rote reci-
tation to an authentic conversation with God.
The Oremus study program teaches you the essentials of an
effective and fruitful prayer life. Over the course of eight weeks
you will discover how God speaks to you, even in the smallest
encounters. Following the Tradition of the Catholic Church and
the wisdom of the saints, you will learn how to express yourself
to God in prayer, and how to hear his voice.
Join us even if you missed a session:
