ECP 2014 · London

Dear Colleague,

The 26th European Congress of Pathology (ECP 2014) will for the first time be organised as a joint venture between the European Society of Pathology and Pathology London 2014 Ltd (a trading subsidiary of The Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland).

It will be held, from 30 August to 3 September 2014 in the ExCeL Centre in London, United Kingdom.

On behalf of the European Society of Pathology and the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland we would like to invite you to join us in London for a meeting that will be both exciting and involving, reflecting the rapid changes in our profession, both in unravelling disease mechanisms and in our clinical diagnostic working practice.

The motto of the Congress – Understanding Disease – is the well-known mission statement of Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland. And it is timely, now that we have greater understanding of many diseases arising from the ongoing revolution in genetics and other translational research methods.

Pathology is more than ever at the centre of clinical decision making, resulting in new challenges and opportunities. It is the philosophy of both the European Society of Pathology and the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland that through better understanding of diseases we can improve the quality of diagnosis and treatment of patients.

The London 2014 scientific programme aims to bring science, translational research and clinical application together to provide delegates with a comprehensive forum for dissemination of research findings, exploration of modern technologies and up to date education.

In addition to providing a rewarding scientific and educational programme the London 2014 meeting will bring together pathologists and scientists from all over the world in a convivial environment providing a memorable social experience. We are looking forward to welcoming you and spending a great time in London.

e BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ESP

The European Society of Pathology (ESP) was established in 1963 in Brussels and is a leading force in European pa-thology and, as such, is pivotal to the future of the spe-cialty in Europe and beyond. As a scientific society, the ESP has, as its primary aim, the promotion of high qual-ity diagnostic practice, applied and translational research and under- and postgraduate education in the field of hu-man pathology. This is achieved through its congresses, its journal Virchows Archiv and various other activities. The ESP interacts with national pathology societies in Europe and has developed links with other EU bodies in close col-laboration with UEMS (Union Euro péenne des Médecins Spécialistes) and EAPCP (European Association of Pathol-ogy Chairs and Programme Directors).

e BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PATHOLOGICAL SOCIETY

The Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland, founded in 1906, is the professional organisation sup-porting academic pathology in the UK and is dedicated to enhancing high quality research and education in pathol-ogy in its broadest sense. The stated focus and mission of the Pathological Society is to promote the understand-ing of disease and the Society actively engages with other organisations and in partnership to develop programmes to achieve this goal. We are delighted that Understanding Disease has been adopted as the motto of London 2014 our joint meeting with the European Society of Pathology. Membership of the Society, often referred to as Path Soc, is open to all individuals involved in pathological research and education and includes the option of a subscription to our Society Journal. The Journal of Pathology is one of the foremost and highest impact journals in the field. Path Soc currently hosts a major conference twice a year

The European School of Pathology under the auspices of the ESP and with the support of 19 Working Groups representing different fields of pathology is involved in the organisation of courses to meet the needs of young pathologists. The ESP also provides an infrastructure for quality assurance projects in diagnostic molecular pathol-ogy, such as the ESP QA KRAS project for testing of colo-rectal cancer.

with outstanding speakers on a range of topics from basic molecular pathology to diagnostic practice and provides a forum for investigators across the world to present their research. The Society also has a generous range of grants that it awards to its members including PhD studentships, scholarships and travel support. It aims to facilitate future high quality research, by developing programmes for un-dergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and by engaging with the general public.

e SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS

The Scientific Committee invites you to participate actively in this conference which will be an extraordinary occasion for the exchange of thoughts and experiences. We look forward to receiving abstracts online for consideration and inclusion in the scientific programme as oral or poster pre-sentation.

The submitted abstracts should give a brief description of the title and topic. All abstracts will be reviewed by mem-bers of the working groups and/or the Scientific Commit-tee. The reviewers will judge the abstracts according to the relevance to ESP and Path Soc, standard of English, objectivity of statement, description of what was done, suitability of methods to aims, conclusions confirmed by objective results, ethics, scientific value, potential clinical value, originality of work and overall impression.

All accepted abstracts will be published in an abstract book which is a supplement to Virchows Archiv, and online on the congress website www.esp-congress.org.

Detailed instructions regarding the electronic submission procedure can be found on the website.

The deadline for abstract submission is 8 April 2014.

e GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION
