Police are investigating an attempted robbery of a pizza delivery driver – the second similar incident in just a few weeks.

Just after 9.30pm on Tuesday, the man was taking food to an address in Savannah. But after knocking on the wrong door the gunman pounced.

On Friday, 6 January another driver was attacked delivering to a home on Victory Avenue.

In that attack, police said the man was struck from behind and had his wallet and other items taken from him.

Tuesday’s robbery saw the thief escape empty handed.

Wearing a blue t-shirt and with his face covered with a hoodie, the thief held a the gun to the man’s face and demanded cash.

But the delivery man ran off screaming and the gunman fled empty handed.

More than 140 players helped raise funds for the Special Olympics in the Cayman Islands, by taking part in the Eric Crutchley Annual Golf Tournament at the North Sound Golf Club.

Special Olympics Fundraising Director, Vanessa Hansen, explained the origins of the tournament.

“Eric Crutchley was involved in Special Olympics for more than 20 years, and more recently was the Chairman of Special Olympics. He passed away last year, so we lost someone who was very dedicated to the athletes, so we decided to do this memorial tournament in his honour, just to remember him and it is going to be an annual event.

“It is also a major fundraiser for Special Olympics. Our operating budget is around C$100,000 for the year and we depend on fundraising and donations to actually make that all happen for the athletes,” she said.

Individuals taking part in one of more than 30 separate teams, each paid a CI$100 registration fee with the money going towards Special Olympics in the Cayman Islands.

The money would be put to good use, Ms Hansen said: “I think one of

the things that is so important about Special Olympics is that it’s a very holistic approach to giving opportunity to people with intellectual disabilities - there’s leadership training and there’s health screening involved, along with the year-long training that takes place, and we have our national games every year as well.

One of Eric Crutchley’s sons, Jonathan Crutchley had flown from his home in New York, especially for the golf tournament. He is used to coming to the Cayman Islands to visit his father during his father’s illness. “I work in health care so I was involved in Dad’s treatment a lot. I teed off this morning. I had to give it a bit of a try.” he said.

Dump problems will be back in 20 years

Environmental and hygiene emergencies surrounding the George Town landfill will recur in 20 years if it is moved to Bodden Town, spreading chemical and noise pollution, threatening public health and reducing property values.

Equally, the move would undermine the chance to reduce Cayman’s cost of living through converting waste to cheaper electricity and clean water.

In an enthusiastic Bodden Town Civic Centre meeting, organised on Tuesday by the 75-member Coalition to Keep Bodden Town Dump Free, a 200-member audience heard from group leaders Gregg Anderson and Vincent Frederick -- 2009 independent political `candidate – and a range of opposition politicians: Opposition Leader Alden McLaughlin, and PPM MLAs Kurt Tibbetts, Arden McLean and Anthony Eden, and North Side independent Ezzard Miller. The gathering also featured Walker’s lawyer and local resident Wayne Panton.

”To redevelop Camana Bay is the primary reason to transfer the dump to Bodden Town,” Mr Anderson told a packed auditorium. “Sometimes you have to draw a line in the sand and declare war. This is about the health and well-being of our community. Dumps are medieval and have no place in a modern society, and certainly not in Bodden Town, the fastest-growing district. We ask you to join the protest

against this blatant disregard for your health. It is immoral.”

Part of the Dart Realty-government ForCayman Aliance, a $1.5 bilion, 30-year programme of jobs, investment and infrastructure creation, the recapping, remediation and relocation of the George Town landfill -- and construction of a replacement 110-acre “waste-management facility” east of Bodden Town -- will free land for expansion of Dart’s Camana Bay community.

Speaker after speaker hammered the theme that at least five reports and remediation tenders since 1992 had not sought relocation of the George Town landfill, instead seeking on-site waste-to-energy activity.

The meeting heard that government had never consulted local residents nor conducted an environmental assessment of the move.

“Bodden Town was not an option until Dart spent hundreds of millions of dollars,” on land and infrastructure for Camana Bay, Mr Miller said, citing original plans to convert waste to electricity, sold at reduced rates through Caribbean Utilities Company. “It’s our last chance to reduce the cost of living. No reasonable concoction justifies moving the dump from George Town to Bodden Town.

“Government no longer decides on the basis of what is best for the country,” he said, establishing the absence in the meeting of UDP members, including Bodden Town MLAs Mark Scotland and Dwayne Seymour.

“We cannot even get our two MLAs to a meeting to discuss our concerns,” Mr Frederick thundered. Why does the George Town dump have to move into another district? The premier thinks Bodden Town people are idiots.

“We are going to get five mini--Mt Trashmores,” he said, referring to the series of storage areas Dart has planned for the Midland Acres “Eco Park”.

Dart Realty has consistently failed to respond to 5 January questions posed by iNews Cayman about the relocation, road access and public consultation. Earlier queries have been met with “no comment”.

Mr McLaughlin called the move ‘senseless” telling the audience “no matter who or how many experts say differently, the reality is that this is a transfer of the landfill in George Town to a landfill in Bodden Town. We believe it is senseless to move a major problem in George Town to a new major problem. We are opposed to the transfer of the dump from George Town to anywhere else. Let’s fix the problem where it is,” he said.

Mr Eden detailed public-health hazards proximal to any landfill and renewed last week’s calls by the West Bay Action Committee for a joint public march and demonstration in Heroes Square at the next Legislative Assembly meeting, so far unscheduled.

Calling for a display of hands, Mr Eden elicited a roar of approval: “Who objects to this dump moving to Bodden Town?”

A spokesman for the RCIPS said: “At about 9:33 PM tonight [24] 911 received a report of an attempted robbery on a Pizza delivery man.

“Apparently, the pizza delivery man went to the wrong address in the vicinity of Candover Street, North Sound Estates, Newlands, Savannah.

“The Pizza man knocked on a door,

and asked the person who answered if they had ordered a pizza, and they said, “no”.

“When the pizza delivery man was returning to his vehicle, he was approached by a lone gunman who pointed what appeared to be a hand gun in his face and demanded money.

“The pizza man ran towards his vehicle screaming, and he was followed by his assailant.

“The pizza man ran around his

vehicle to escape his assailant, and back to the house where he had knocked on the wrong door. The assailant then ran off into the bushes towards Newlands empty handed.”

No shots were fired and the victim was not physically injured.

The Cayman Islands Veterans Association (CIVA) were pleased to welcome the Dominion President of the Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) Mrs. Patricia Varga, and the RCL Secretary, Mr. Brad White, at the CIVA headquarters George Town.

Mrs Varga and Mr White met with Cayman veterans, and observed at first hand the problems facing some of the very old Caymanians and the way in which the Association is able to help meet their needs.

Mrs Varga explained to CIVA members how members of the RCL supported veterans spread over many different islands in the Caribbean:

“We support veterans on about 15 islands with a monthly stipend, and it does make the difference between, sometimes, no meals a day and one meal a day, so we are very proud of that. We are very proud of our association with the Cayman Islands Veterans

Association as well. We would like to thank you so much for making us so welcome, it’s just been wonderful.

“We’ve just come from Belize and visited quite a few veterans and widows there as well. Every year we go

to different locations,” she said. The visitors acknowledged the

continuous commitment made by Mr. Charles Adams O.B.E. in his position as Honorary Secretary for 27 years by presenting him with a special plaque.

This date marks the one year anniversary since Mrs Evans was last seen by her colleagues and family.

To facilitate this special service, the Grand Cayman DEH main office (at 580 North Sound Rd), the George Town Landfill, and the Solid Waste dispatch offices will be closed to the public from 8:30 am until 1pm. The Sister Island offices and operations will remain open during the day. The Grand Cayman facilities will re-open at 1 pm Friday afternoon.

Health is asking the public for their cooperation. Therefore, businesses that need to dispose of large amounts of waste are asked to do so early in the morning or after 1 pm on Friday. However, the 24 hour drop-off area will remain open to facilitate disposal of small residential loads. The department apologises for the any inconvenience this closure may cause.

Hospital must pay $1M to Garth BrooksCLAREMORE, Okla. (AP) — An Oklahoma hospital in Garth Brooks’ hometown must pay $1 million to the country singer because it failed to build a women’s health centre in honour of his late mother, jurors ruled Tuesday evening.

Jurors ruled that the hospital must return a $500,000 donation to Brooks plus pay him $500,000 in punitive damages in Brooks’ breach-of-contract lawsuit against IntegrisCanadian Valley Regional Hospital in Yukon. Brooks said he thought he’d reached a deal in 2005 with the hospital’s president, James Moore, but sued after learning the

hospital wanted to use the money for other construction projects.

The hospital argued that Brooks gave it unrestricted access to the $500,000 donation and only later asked that it build a women’s centre and name it after his mother, Colleen Brooks, who died of cancer in 1999.

“Obviously we are disappointed, particularly with the jury’s decision to award damages above and beyond the $500,000,” Integris spokesman Hardy Watkins said. “We’re just glad to see the case come to a resolution.”

Brooks called the jurors “heroes” and said he felt vindicated by their verdict. “I no longer feel like I’m

crazy,” he said.Jury member Beverly Lacy said she

voted in favour of Brooks because she thought the hospital went back on its word. As far as the punitive damages, she said: “We wanted to show them not to do that anymore to anyone else.”

Driver rams bus down busy Indian streets, kills nineNEW DELHI (AP) — A bus driver mowed down pedestrians and rammed cars, scooters and food stalls in a rampage through crowded Indian streets Wednesday that killed nine people and injured more than two dozen. Police chased the bus for an hour through the streets of the central city of Pune, with traffic officers firing on it in an attempt to stop it, before they managed to arrest the 30-year-old driver. He is being held on murder charges.

The licensed bus driver had driven his route as normal Tuesday, but on Wednesday morning jumped into another driver’s bus and took off,

police said.“He just went berserk,” slamming

into people, cars, school buses, scooters and vegetable stands, Pune Police Commissioner Meeran Borwankar said. Pedestrians tried to flee, with some throwing children out of the way of the oncoming bus, she said.

“He went on ramming vehicles, hitting pedestrians. He was in such a dangerous mood,” Borwankar said.

Food stalls were reduced to piles of squashed produce and broken beams, while at least 40 cars were crushed.

The injured were being treated in three hospitals.

Police have ruled out terrorism as a

possible motive but were seeking more answers in questioning the driver, Borwankar said.

The mayor of Pune, which is about 125 miles (200 kilometers) southeast of Mumbai, appealed for calm.

WASHINGTON (AP) — “Good job tonight,” President Barack Obama told his Defense chief as he arrived for his annual State of the Union message.

Unknown to a global television audience watching the speech moments later, a bold hostage rescue operation had played out half a world away with an elite Navy SEAL team’s rescue of two hostages in Somalia, one of them an American. It was the same SEAL team that killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, a U.S. official said Wednesday. Publicly, Obama did not tip his hand during his speech, though microphones picked up his congratulation to Defense Secretary

Leon Panetta as he entered the House chamber Tuesday night.

Unknown to those watching the speech, Obama had learned shortly before that the operation to rescue American aid worker Jessica Buchanan (pictured) and another hostage had been successful. And, immediately after the speech, Obama returned to the White House to inform Buchanan’s father that she was safe and “on her way home,” according to a White House statement.

It was a dramatic bookend to the pomp and ceremony of one of Washington’s most elaborate rituals — the State of the Union. The president

did not mention the operation during his address to Congress and the nation, though he did refer to another successful military operation — the May 2011 killing of Osama bin Laden by Navy SEAL Team 6.

I have lived here thirty years. 44% of my life. If I am appalled that a serving policeman’s

house in West Bay was shot up in the early hours of last Sunday (22) this must be absolutely shocking and beyond comprehension to Caymanians who were born and bred here many years ago. In all my time of living in various towns in England with populations far in excess of Grand Cayman shooting up a home of a policeman never ever happened. Shooting at policeman’s houses happened in Northern Ireland mainly during the IRA (Irish Republican Army) troubles (1922-1969). To think this could happen here?

Our publisher, Joan Wilson (nee Watler), is the daughter of the late Major Joseph Rodriguez Watler who many Caymanians will know was Chief of Police here for 33 years and died in April 1965 at the age of 85. I make no apologies for repeating some passages of her passionate 2011 Christmas message:

“And look what has happened to our lovely Cayman Islands. So many years we have been a peaceful loving, kind and friendly people - a place where we could wander or visit without fear. Now for some reason we have to be so careful to whom we speak or visit for fear of being assaulted or investigated. We were used to walking and visiting any and everywhere without fear day and night. Things and people have changed a lot in the past few years. Personally I have no real fear of people – not yet for I am my Father’s daughter and I look on the good side of people and I offer help where help is needed and this goes a long way. Crime, despite the statistics that do not tell the real story, is rising and we have been so conditioned to it over this year it doesn’t surprise us any more. And robberies with guns! Something we never used to hear about - retaliation killings? Is this really Cayman? Is this the country where I was born? My ancestors, the Boddens and Watlers were the first settlers here. A lot of them made this Country what it is, a wonderful place to live and call home. I almost want to cry when I see what is happening.” She finished her message with, “I love Cayman, my home and family and I love you all.”

Is this really Cayman? Is this the country where I was born?

You may not like our present police force. You may think they are incompetent. You may blame them for the increase in the major crimes. However, can you imagine living here without this police force? The one I have criticised, too. Every member of the RCIPS are sworn to defend us. Yes, all of us. EVEN THE CRIMINALS WHO ARE ATTACKED BY OTHER GANG MEMBERS. WITH THEIR LIVES!

The RCIPS are appealing for “anyone who was in the area at the relevant time on Sunday morning and saw anyone in or around the area, or heard any gunfire, is asked to contact West Bay CID on 949-3999, the RCIPS Tip-line 949-7777 or Crime Stoppers on 800-8477 (TIPS).”

Even the bloggers are shocked at this and all of them say something must be done. Most don’t offer any solution when the answer is simple. Anyone with even a scrap of information MUST COME FORWARD. One blogger said, “Cayman has lost its innocence”. How right he is. Most bloggers blame the police, the legal system including of all persons the Chief Justice. How absurd. The solution is in our hands. This is an island for heavens sake. A small island. We are surrounded by sea. I used to joke that if I were unfaithful to my wife she would know before I actually committed the adulterous deed. Are we really going to sit back, do nothing and say nothing? How many innocent people, our youth, our children and even our babes in arms, are going to lose their lives from the scum that live crawling in their nests of sewage plotting their next target. They have contempt for you and me and they have now even more contempt for the very people who are our protectors.

When it comes to crimes against our police we must support the RCIPS. We must support our Commissioner. Our Chief Justice. Our Governor. Our ministers. I plead, no I beg. GIVE THESE PERPETRATORS UP!! You cannot be accused of “ratting” on rats. These scum are vermin. They don’t care about me and they most certainly don’t care about you.

The Taste of Cayman Food and Wine Festival is right around the corner and in addition to providing visitors with an array of culinary options, this weekend’s festival will be a true entertainment experience. The event coordinators have included live musical acts, a dynamic fireworks spectacular, exciting competitions and a photo booth as added attractions.

Once inside the gates of the event at Camana Bay, attendees will find themed entertainment sections spread across the grounds. The festival kicks off at 5pm and entertainment is planned throughout the night. A cross section of calypso, soca, rock, reggae, country and pop music will be heard across the festival site with live music and DJs providing the vibe for The Hangout, All Things Cayman as well as in other themed areas.

Competitions will also be an exciting element throughout the festival. All participating restaurants will be competing to win votes to be named “Cayman’s Favourite Restaurant”, so visitors should expect to be wowed at every turn. And for those who fancy true Caymanian culture and cuisine, the All Things Cayman area will host the Heavy Cake Competition, where local competitors vie to claim the title of Best Heavy Cake on the island. Attendees will have a chance to sample different heavy cake entries to experience this local favourite for themselves.

Another area of interest at this year’s event will be an interactive photo booth area where guests can take fun, candid photos—complete with oversized whisks and ice cream cones, feather boas and wigs—with a professional photographer. These images will then be shown on TV monitors in the festival and participants will also have the chance to upload their photo to the Taste of Cayman Facebook fan page immediately following.

“While food is definitely centre stage and palates will be tantalised with the feast of flavours throughout the festival, we also have a great line up of performers and attractions to entertain everyone,” commented Event Coordinator Lucy Wilcox.

ABOUT TASTE OF CAYMAN AND CITA

Taste of Cayman, Food & Wine Festival at Camana Bay, is a culinary showcase and community event that supports the non-profit CITA and supporting tourism initatives. A British mother-of-two has been found dead on a beach just hours after she arrived in Antigua for her father’s wedding.

Nicola Raybone, 33, vanished when she went to watch the sunset after being left alone at a bar in her all-inclusive hotel in Antigua.

Friends returned from a meal to find the mother of two missing and alerted the hotel’s security and the police.

An hour after a search operation was launched, her body dressed in wet clothes was discovered lying on the beach.

Police in Antigua say the cause of death is unknown but there was no sign of injury or indication of violence and it is believed she may have fallen into the sea and drowned.

The tragedy occurred last Thursday after Miss Raybone – described as a doting mother to her two children Amy 11 and Dylan 13 – had just arrived at their 40 acre Jolly Beach Resort Hotel complex to attend the wedding which was being held there.

The ceremony at the £300-a-night complex was due to take place on the beachfront the next day and Miss Raybone, from Lytham, Lancs and friends gathered for early doors drinks.

The party left for dinner at about

6pm at one of the resort’s five restaurants but left Miss Raybone alone at the bar. She then mysteriously disappeared leaving her shoes and mobile phone behind on a table.

The dead woman’s uncle David Barlow said: “Nicola had two children Amy 11 and Dylan 13 whom she adored.

“She was there with her friend Becky and her kids to celebrate her father’s wedding. She was alone for a short time at the bar and her shoes and phone had been left on the bar.

“She was a good swimmer and none of this makes any sense to me. Surely at around 6pm or 7pm there would have been people on the beach who may have seen something.

“Her mother is distraught, if anyone can remember seeing her or know anything that may be of help please contact the police.

“Nicola was the most pleasant girl I’ve ever met. Never once have I heard her raise her voice to anyone. She loved her kids unconditionally and she received the same back from them.

“My sister is inconsolable. None of this makes any sense to us, so please anyone with any information let the police know. I also realise it is most likely to be just a tragic accident but we need to know. RIP sweetheart, will

never forget you.”On a social networking site Miss

Raybone wrote: “Hey I am Nikki. Married and very happy to the most amazing and gorgeous woman and love of my life.”

Sgt William Holder, from Antigua Police said: “She was on the island for a wedding that should have been happening the following day. A family member was getting married.

“Obviously the family is very distressed, it’s a tragic situation. Her clothes were wet but it is not yet known whether she had been in the water or not.

“She was found on the shoreline between the surf and where the water breaks.”

The Foreign Office confirmed a British National had died in Antigua and consular assistance was being offered to the family who remain on the island.

British mom found dead in Antigua

Last weekend Grand Cayman made big news with the report on the persons who were honoured at the Heroes Day celebrations in George Town (23). I was not one of the recipients of a gong I could have proudly worn on my chest telling everyone “I AM A HERO.”

I went to an after celebration party for one of the medal recipients where we all showed our pleasure at this lovely lady becoming one of our country’s newest heroes. Like the others she richly deserved being so honoured.

I looked around and I thought

everyone here is in some way a hero. Even myself. In someone else’s eyes we are all heroes. From the very first day we were born we became a hero. We survived our mother’s womb and our parents were heroes for ‘producing’ you and me.

My friends are my heroes, for putting up with me. The same thing can be said for my work mates.

At one time in our lives our children thought of us as their hero. They actually worshipped us. It might have only been a few years or months but at some time they did. My ex partner probably thought me a hero and this was reciprocal.

If we believe “I am a hero” then we can actually go about our whole life living up to that image. The rest of the world may recognise it, too. It doesn’t really matter if they don’t. Aren’t we all heroes?

Let’s have an All Heroes Day. We can all give ourselves a medal then even if it’s an imaginary one.

Students in Grand Cayman showed what it takes to recycle more than 20,000 outdated phone directories during the recent Yellow2Green Recycling Programme developed by the Cayman Islands Yellow Pages. This year 15 Primary Schools participated in the programme, including Cayman Brac, during a three-week initiative. Students were encouraged to participate in the contest by gathering as many directories as possible. The top three schools, which collected the most directories, per student enrolled, were awarded cash prizes.

“We are so proud that students once again stepped up to the challenge and helped us keep old directories out of the landfill. Parents and faculty of participating schools played an instrumental role as parents were the ones assisting the children in collecting directories and the teachers were responsible for keeping the count from each class”, mentioned Eileen Keens, Marketing Manager for Global Directories.

This year Prospect Primary School took home the grand prize

of $1,500 for collecting 3,907 old phone books. St. Ignatius placed a close second, taking home $1,000 cash, and a great sense of pride for their contribution of 3,654 directories collected. Third place went to Cayman International School who collected 2,168 phone books and was awarded $700.00.

In addition, the class that collected the most directories per school, also won a Subway Party and the student who brought the most directories won a $40 gift certificate courtesy of Books & Books.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to see how the students jumped at the chance to participate in such a unique recycling effort,” said Mark Macfee, Executive Vice President of Cayman Islands Yellow Pages, parent company Global Directories. “They learned a life lesson about the importance of recycling and protecting our natural resources while participating in the Yellow2Green programme,” added Mark.

All books will be shipped via Thompson Tropical Shipping to GreenFiber in Tampa where they’ll

be 100% recycled into natural fiber insulation that is used in homes to aid in energy efficiency. Greenfiber is North America’s leading natural fiber manufacturer and they have been working with communities across the USA, and now in the Caribbean, to help keep over one million tons of paper out of the landfills.

What is your personality? Some people talk, react, judge and act exactly as they have seen and taught. They hate original and new ideas calling them dangerous. others and discomfort to family and friends, but they are not bothered. They consider themselves as right and others as wrong and sometimes fools. They are the rebels of the society. These people are often cowards and selfish.

The original and mature type

is balanced. They try to understand the why and then decide the correct course of action. These people will be ready to make sacrifices, risk their lives and are ready to fight conventions and set thoughts if they find them dangerous. They can become great leaders. Their maturity

and originality gives them a wide canvas to decide about ethics, values and the correct way of living. These people enjoy the world, love the world and wish to contribute something significant to make a better world.

My special memory of Trella Sanon nee Myles

I first met Trella on the first day of the opening of Cayman Islands High School in 1949. Immediately she and I bonded and became the best of friends and great High School buddies. Trella and I were both very sport minded and when our Netball court was completed and our teams formed I was the captain and Trella was just under me as the best on the team for scoring. We won every game between the two of us for the highest score.

Trella’s Dad Mr. Urban Myles was a seaman and we always kept our ears open for the sound of the conch shell when she was told that the boat her Dad was on was expected in that day. As soon as the boat got into the dock both of us were sneaking away from School down to the Dock to greet Mr. Urban. Trella always knew he would have something special for her and the family. In this particular day he had brought Sugar Daddies for Trella and she immediately shared them with me of course. Off we’d go back to school sucking on these Sugar Daddies. We even took our seats back in class sucking on the Sugar Daddies, until one day Mr. Ricketts threw a piece of chalk at us for bringing the candies into class. He gave us both a

right telling off and scolded us. You see once we got our teeth into the Sugar Daddies we could hardly get them out. Once graduation was over Trella went her way and formed her own way of life whilst I did the same. However we always kept in touch. Trella settled for a while in the United States whilst I settled and lived in England for a long time. Trella became a beautician/hairdresser and later returning to Cayman to open one of the nicest Beauty Salons right on Smith Road just next to the family home. I returned home and immediately found myself in my spare time sitting in her beauty salon just conversing and watching her in her job of creating beautiful hairstyles on the lovely ladies waiting patiently for their turn. After a few years Trella Met and married Carl and we three became the best of friends. Trella and Carl then extended their property by opening a small grocery store right next door. Again every time I was passing I would find myself visiting Mr. Urban and then shifting across to the grocery store where I would sit comfortably and have a drink and exchange conversation with both of them. This, my friends was real

genuine friendship between Trella and myself. I was a part of Trella’s life and every thing that was going on there I was invited to, together with the Ex-seamen who would celebrate Mr. Urban’s Birthday from year to year. After a while Trella started to have problems – like a stroke or two - a fall maybe which really set her back. She decided to move back to Florida. On my visits to Florida I always touched base with her and she and Carl would join us for old time sake as we say. Going back in time and enjoying each other’s company away from home. Trella lived comfortably in Florida but gradually her health started to change. I called Trella every two weeks just to check her always being greeted by Carl as “The Forty Niner” and the greeting and latest Cayman News I would then exchange with Trella. My last call was on Christmas Day and I could hear that Trella was not the usual Trella. Her voice was slow.

As you all know, the rest is history as they say. My good friend is at peace with her Saviour. How we will all miss her. Goodbye my special friend, my Angel. Rest in Peace. As always your friend - Joan

All over the world and for many years civilisations have relied on their faith in spiritual or mystical powers to accomplish truly amazing feats. Long before modern medicine came on the scene, most health concerns were executed by applying spirituality, voodoo, witchcraft, astrology, or psychic power from any number of paranormal sources. Nowadays, mainstream religion is mocked. People laugh at those who believe in the powers of the paranormal, occult, magic, psychic or new age remedies. They are labelled as misguided kooks.

It is built into our composition to search for truth, and solutions to the many problems we face. Millions of people worldwide seek relief and solutions to their problems by turning to magic spells. Just go to eBay and do search on love spells or magic spells. You’ll find an endless potpourri of psychics and spell casters who can make your problems disappear, or bring you amazing results for just a few dollars.

So how can a love spell performed by a psychic actually attract a soul mate to a lonely person seeking a love partner? Did that money spell really make that struggling secretary get a job promotion and a salary raise? And what about that healing spell that cured my neighbour’s back pain? The unbelievers will likely point

to coincidence, some sort of logical explanation, or attribute the results to simply “mind over matter.” But those who believe in psychic powers and the paranormal world think otherwise - there must be a spiritual or metaphysical helping hand involved.

Professional psychics and paranormal experts will state there is much more to this than meets the eye. Most mainstream religions accept the power of prayer as a way to receive blessings, protection and goodness from spiritual sources. Even medical professionals recognise an individual’s faith and beliefs can play a major role in improving quality of life and health. However, while many doctors will admit that there is some benefit to holistic and alternative medicines, you’ll be pressed to find any who will publicly encourage seeking answers from a psychic or magic spell.

There has always been, and will always be something about the stigma of going to a fortune teller, psychic or spell caster that keeps people from easily accepting their virtues. As an industry, the psychic business has brought on much of this skepticism itself. Shoddy late night television infomercials for psychic readings, con artists or carnival fortune tellers are the images that come to mind for many, when they think of psychics. Just look at how astrology and other psychic-related ads have that tiny disclaimer at the bottom that says

“for entertainment purposes only.” It

sounds phony. However, there are many people

who use money or love spells on a regular basis, in an attempt to restore a bad relationship, or gain financial freedom. And these people come from all walks or life - professions, income levels, religious affiliations and nationalities. Some do rely too much on seeking guidance and help from the psychic world, but the majority are die-hard believers of the occult and would not have it any other way. They will tell you that these spells work for them, their lives have been enriched, and you are the foolish one who doesn’t know what you’re missing.

So, are these spells real? Can they actually make things happen that I can’t do on my own?” If spells can do what they claim they can do (improve love life, attract more money, better luck at gambling) then the answer has to be “Yes.” A spell that does what it is supposed to do has got to be real. Of course, it helps if you have a positive outlook, and believe that the spell can truly help you. Believers will tell you that those who refuse to open their minds to the possibilities of magic spells and spiritual solutions will never know what they are missing. Perhaps it is the unbelievers who are experiencing “mind over matter,” only their mindset is narrowly fixed on the opposite end of the belief scale.

I am not a believer in spells but a believer in prayer. But most prayers are actually spellbinding.

Djokovic, Murray, Nadal, Federer in Aussie semisMELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Appearing uncomfortable for much of the match, defending champion Novak Djokovic held on to beat David Ferrer 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-1 Wednesday night and complete a blockbuster semifinal lineup at the Australian Open.

Djokovic leads the top four men in tennis into the semis at Melbourne Park, advancing to a matchup against No. 4 Andy Murray, who defeated Kei Nishikori of Japan earlier Wednesday.

On Thursday, No. 2 Rafael Nadal plays No. 3 Roger Federer, the first time the two former top-ranked stars have met in a semifinal since the 2005 French Open.

It marks only the third time that the top four seeds have advanced to the semis at the Australian Open — it previously happened in 1988 and 2005. It was also the 14th time at all Grand Slams since the Open Era began in 1968, but the third time in the last four majors, including the U.S. Open and French Open last year.

Djokovic rubbed the back of his upper left leg on several occasions, looked on the verge of being physically sick in the second set and buried his head in towels several times during breaks. During the third set, a tired-looking Djokovic sat down on a linesman’s chair during a line-call video challenge by Ferrer.

“I was lucky to get out of the second set, it was a big mental advantage to get two sets up,” Djokovic said.

He also played down talk of any injuries. “I don’t have any physical issues,” Djokovic said. “I feel very fit and I feel mentally, as well, very fresh.

“It’s just today I found it very difficult after a long time to breathe because I felt the whole day my nose was closed a little bit. I just wasn’t able to get enough oxygen.”

Ferrer said he couldn’t be sure if Djokovic was healthy — or not.

“No, I don’t know,” Ferrer said. “You have to ask to him, not me. He ran perfect all the match.

Nothing special.”The Nadal-Federer semifinal

matchup has been rarely possible because the pair held the top two spots for most of the time between 2005 and 2010, meaning they could only meet in the finals after being placed in opposite sides of the draw.

Djokovic said he’d be watching the Nadal and Federer match like any tennis fan.

“I will enjoy it from my couch, they’re two out of four or five of the greatest players to play this game, they’ve been so dominant,”

Djokovic said. “Every time they play it’s a treat. I’m going to have a nice dinner at home and watch them.” Murray, for his part, is also surprised to be not facing Nadal in the semifinals.

“It has been amazing, I pretty much drew to be in Nadal’s half ... almost every Slam,” Murray said. “I can’t remember the last time I wasn’t in his half of the draw. It’s been a long time.”

On the women’s side, former and reigning Wimbledon winners Maria Sharapova and Petra Kvitova — two of the three players

who can take the No. 1 ranking — advanced to the semifinals.

Sharapova won 6-2, 6-3 on Wednesday against fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova, who knocked out five-time champion Serena Williams in the previous round. Kvitova reached the semifinals at Melbourne Park for the first time with a 6-4, 6-4 win over unseeded Italian Sara Errani.

The other player who can reach No. 1 — third-seeded Victoria Azarenka — plays defending champion Kim Clijsters in the other semifinal Thursday.

Broad and Swann help England take chargeStuart Broad and Graeme Swann each took three wickets as England took charge of the second Test against Pakistan on day one in Abu Dhabi.

Broad (3-47) bowled both Younus Khan and Azhar Ali after lunch to leave the hosts struggling on 103-4.

A stand of 100 between Misbah-ul-Haq and Asad Shafiq helped Pakistan recover before Swann (3-52) trapped Shafiq lbw.

Broad then removed Adnan Akmal and Swann bowled Abdur Rehman to leave Pakistan 256-7, with Misbah 83 not out.

England would have taken a firmer grip on the game had James Anderson not dropped Misbah when the Pakistan captain was only on 30.

Ultimately, the efforts of Misbah and Shafiq (58) ensured that Pakistan did not entirely waste the opportunity to bat first on a flat wicket, albeit one that is already offering assistance to the spinners.

The turn extracted by Swann and Panesar - in the England side for the injured Chris Tremlett, who is flying home - justified captain Andrew Strauss’s decision to select only two front-line seamers as the tourists looked to bounce back from a 10-wicket defeat in the first Test in Dubai.

However, any trepidation that Strauss may have had about having two pacemen at his disposal would have been allayed by Broad, who bowled with patience and skill to extract plenty of seam movement.

In an excellent spell after lunch, the Nottinghamshire man found exaggerated movement to bowl Younus off his pads and Azhar through the gap between bat and pad.

With Pakistan in trouble at four wickets down, Misbah counter-attacked by launching Panesar for two straight sixes and, with the support of Shafiq, rebuilt the innings.

Their progress was untroubled until Shafiq, who had just reached his fourth Test half-century, aimed an ugly sweep at Swann and was trapped leg before.

That exposed the Pakistan tail to the second new ball and Akmal, who was dropped at slip by Strauss off Anderson, was pinned lbw by Broad

before Swann deceived left-hander Rehman with an off-break that turned enough to avoid the outside edge but not the off stump.

Pakistan’s hopes of a substantial first-innings score now rest entirely with Misbah and, with only the tail for company, he attacked even in the last over of the day, dispatching Panesar for two more sixes.

That treatmeant was harsh on the Sussex slow left-armer, who in his first appearance for England since 2009, got through 33 overs for figures of 1-91.

Panesar had been introduced into

the attack as early as the ninth over and bowled nearly twice as much as fellow spinner Swann.

Swann had struck England’s first blow of the morning, enticing Taufeeq Umar to leave a ball that knocked his off stump out of the ground, before Panesar squeezed an arm ball through Mohammad Hafeez’s bat and pad only one delivery after spilling a return chance from the same batsman.

Panesar could have had further rewards had Anderson been able to snaffle Misbah, and England will hope that mistake does not prove costly.

LONDON (AP) — Nearly 100 people have been arrested for selling fake tickets and bogus hotel rooms ahead of the London Olympics.

With some six months to go before Britain’s largest-ever planned security operation, Home Secretary Theresa May said police had arrested 97 people in scams involving tickets, fake Olympic websites and nonexistent hotel rooms.

The demand for tickets and hotels in London during the July 27-Aug. 12 games has been huge — some rooms are going for more than 600 pounds per night (nearly $1,000).

“Police are sending a very clear message that we’re not going to tolerate intrusions by organised criminals into the Olympic Games,” May said during a speech at the Royal United Services Institute in London, a British security think-tank.

London police said the tickets involved in the scam were phony.

But the threat most on the minds of organizers is terrorism — Britain was the first western European country to be targeted by al-Qaida-inspired suicide bombers who launched attacks on London’s transit system in 2005, killing 52 people the day after the city won the 2012 Olympics bid.

Security officials are also haunted by the attack at the 1972 Olympics in Munich that killed 11 Israeli athletes and coaches.

Intelligence officials say there is nothing to suggest a specific and credible terror threat to the London Games, yet the threat level will rise to “severe.”

Britain’s police, the domestic spy agency MI5, the foreign intelligence agency MI6, government

communications surveillance units and the military will all help secure the Olympics against possible threats. In addition, international law enforcement and policing agencies like Interpol and the FBI will help British authorities. More than 20,000 security guards are also being hired for extra protection.

“Many of our resources will be dedicated to counterterrorism operations,” said Commander Bob Broadhurst, in charge of operational planning for Scotland Yard, who said one concern is being able to patrol parallel or unplanned events around the Olympics, such as concerts and other celebrations.

Although Broadhurst said protests would be allowed during the games, May said protest camps around key sites would be prohibited.

Security teams have already started testing their preparedness.

Two weeks ago, it was disclosed that British police testing security protocols had earlier managed to smuggle a fake bomb into Olympic Park. Last week, a police officer reportedly left documents about security arrangements for the London Olympics on a train.

Officials said those documents were

not sensitive and such test-runs are part of the training.

Training events around London have been visible for months — last week, British police joined up with the military to practice boarding suspect vessels on the River Thames and to stop others by using equipment that entangles their propellers.

Some 13,500 military personnel will be on hand for the Games, according to Gen. Nick Parker, commander of land forces for the British Ministry of Defense, who said forces would be testing Typhoon fighter jets and helicopters later this week.

Two warships and bomb disposal experts will also be on guard for the Games. But the real test will come closer to July, when teams will have to search athletes, diplomats, spectators and others.

A core component of the security operation will be Britain’s vast network of CCTVs and high-tech security equipment. Thousands of extra closed-circuit cameras will be added to Olympic venues — Britain already has some of the most extensive surveillance powers in the world and has become a leader in what critics call “Big Brother” techniques with its more than 4.3 million CCTV cameras.

Arrests for fake Olympic tickets, hotel rooms

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Michael Phelps. Missy Franklin. Jordyn Weiber. Ryan Lochte.

Any of those athletes could be the defining face of the U.S. Olympic team in the run-up to the London Games. So far, though, none stands alone as “The One To Watch” — at least not according to people who make a living out of watching the Olympics.

The Associated Press sent emails

to sports agents, executives and others with strong Olympic ties, asking them who America’s face of the Olympics would be as the games approach.

Phelps got the most votes with four, followed by Franklin with three, then Weiber (gymnastics) and Lochte (swimming) with two apiece. The rest of the 16 responses were spread among five athletes.

Mario Balotelli’s agent has warned the striker could quit English football if he continues to receive what he sees as unfair treatment.

Balotelli, 21, is facing a four-match ban after being charged with violent conduct by the Football Association.

The City forward appeared to stamp on Scott Parker before scoring a late penalty to secure Manchester City’s 3-2 win over Tottenhamon Sunday.

“I think he feels persecuted; he cannot go on like that,” said Mino Raiola. Agent Raiola added on BBC Radio 5 live: “We had a very clear image of his career at the beginning and I told the press openly Mario will have to stay at Manchester City for at least three of four years, helping the club on this important project and grow as a man and a player.

LONDON (AP) - Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp’s financial dealings were raked over in a London court Tuesday as prosecutors laid out their case that he used a secret offshore bank account to stash $295,000 of transfer bonuses over a six-year period.

The trial comes as Redknapp is enjoying the most successful period of his coaching career and is a prime candidate to replace Fabio Capello as England manager later this year. The 64-year-old coach is accused of keeping cash in Monaco to avoid British taxes while he was manager at Portsmouth.

On the second day of the trial at Southwark Crown Court, the jury was told that Redknapp denies receiving a “bung’’ - the British term to describe a bribe - from former Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric during their spell at the club.

“For the sake of ... any amount of money, I don’t fiddle,’’ Redknapp said in part of a police interview read

by the prosecution. “I pay my tax.’’Redknapp had defended himself

to a reporter with the now-defunct News of the World during a taped conversation read in court

“How can it be a bung when the chairman of the football club paid me?’’ Redknapp said.

But the prosecution case is that the pair were trying to dodge paying income tax and national insurance. Mandaric is accused of paying $145,000 into Redknapp’s Monaco bank account in May 2002 - a bonus prompted by Peter Crouch’s sale from Portsmouth to Aston Villa - and another $150,000 two years later.

The 73-year-old Mandaric, who is now chairman at third-tier club Sheffield Wednesday, contends he was providing tax free loans to Redknapp, prosecutor John Black said.According to police interviews read in court, Redknapp said he was assured by Mandaric that the tax on the money in Monaco had been paid and claimed his boss at the time had control over the

HSBC account. Redknapp also said the investment made on his behalf by Mandaric turned out to be a “disaster.’’

“It got wiped out,’’ Redknapp was quoted as telling police. “I thought that’s the end of that one, never mentioned it again ... I just thought it’s history ... he probably ain’t even put the money in.’’

Redknapp managed Portsmouth, which is now in the second tier, between 2002 and 2004. He returned to Fratton Park in 2005 after a brief spell at its archrival Southampton before moving to Tottenham in 2008. As the case was being heard Tuesday, Portsmouth’s future was at stake over unpaid taxes.

Cayman boxing hope Dariel Ebanks took a giant step closer to London for this year’s Olympic Games.

Ebanks was victorious when the local team took on boxers from Jamaica during a high-voltage match-up.

The light-heavyweight stepped into the ring to face a familiar foe in Jonathan Hanson.

The two have met before on Cayman soil when Hanson was disqualified for comments he made towards the referee during the bout.

This time however Ebanks was the victor on boxing ability alone. There was only going to be one winner in this contest.

Now he will get the opportunity

to acclimatise to UK conditions when he travels to Cardiff in Wales next month for a training camp.

Southpaw Ebanks then takes part in the final Olympic qualifiers in Brazil in May with London just around the corner.

Last weekends tournament

in Kingston also gave young bantamweight Tafari Ebanks the chance to impress. And he didn’t disappoint.

At just 17 years old, he is maybe young in experience, but with each fight Tafari grows and grows.

His opponent, Toriano Nicholas, had six years advantage on Ebanks but despite the obvious age-gap, Tafari triumphed.

Super heavyweight Gino Brown took the decision in his match-up – but only after his opponent was disqualified for taking the fight beyond the bell on more than one occasion.

Taking to the ring for only the second time, Diego Rodriguez at 14 was the youngest member of the D Dalmain Ebanks Boxing Gym to travel and he showed massive potential with a points win over Shavon Lindo of the Bruising Gym.

One cause for concern was after Jessica McFarlane narrowly missed out on victory after a close points decision, she needed hospital treatment.

Jessica, who is asthmatic, was kept under observation overnight but discharged the following morning.
