It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to “Crazy for you”, BMTC’s latest production which I am sure you will enjoy.

I have been involved with this Company since 1972 (Princess Ida if anyone is interested!) and have performed almost every October and February since then – 69 shows by my calculation - until I decided a couple of years ago that the time had come when my inability to remember the words, the music and the moves (and all at the same time!) was becoming an embarrassment - at least to me!

So its 44 years since I first trod the boards in this very theatre; 44 years of Wednesday evenings, 7.30 to 10pm, plus extra Sundays and for those who take the principal parts, another evening most weeks too. And then the dress rehearsal – 1pm to 10pm usually – longer than a day at work!

For me, though, it hasn’t been enough to be just one of the chorus (the musical wallpaper as a friend of mine once described us!) – because as well as very occasionally taking a principal part – The Duke in Patience in 1976 and one of the Flowers of Progress in Utopia Limited in 1985 – I was also a member of the Committee for many years and served as Vice-Chairman for most of them.

The “reward” for all my years with the Company was first to be made an honorary life member and then to be asked to be President – a position which I am enormously honoured to hold.

Why do we do it? That’s a complicated question! For me it’s been the one time of the week when I’ve not been “in charge” - someone else – the Musical Director or the Producer – teaches me and tells me what to do! So it is recreation in its true meaning – re-creation. It’s very social: lifetime friends are made here, it’s very entertaining (at least most of the time!) and it’s very satisfying to go through the whole process of learning new music, putting the production together and then presenting it to you, our loyal audience and being rewarded by you appreciation.

A show like tonight’s doesn’t happen just because the members have faithfully attended weeks of rehearsals. There are countless other things that have to be done to maintain the Company in good health and its HQ in good working order and to put on shows that are as professional as we can possibly make them. It costs around £20,000 to put on a show – an enormous amount of money - which we can only get back when you buy a ticket and come to the show.

So, please, don’t stop supporting this wonderful Company. We want to continue to perform to excellent houses (full ones I hear the Treasurer say!) because we hope it gives you pleasure and it continues to give us pleasure as well as enabling us to pay our bills and bring the next show to you in due course.

It is with regret that The Burton Musical Theatre Company has to announce the passing of two of its long standing members Adrian Bader and Ken Lowe.

Adrian who passed away earlier in the year first joined the show with his wife Mary in 1969 for Orpheus in the Underworld in which he played the part of ‘Vulcan’. He went on to play many leading roles such as Camille (Merry Widow), Ali Hakim (Oklahoma), Enoch Snow (Carousel) and Lt. Cable (South Pacific). When not taking a lead part Adrian was an invaluable chorus member with his Welsh tenor tones enhancing every performance. His last show was The Mikado in 1997 but he and Mary remained supporters of Burton Operatic Society (as it was then) as audience members and patrons.

Ken, who passed away only last week, joined the Society in 1958 for Princess Ida in which he played the part of Hilarion a part he played again in 1972. He performed many leading roles such as Nanki Poo (The Mikado), Colonel Fairfax (Yeomen of the Guard), Mercury (Orpheus in the Underworld), Lord Tolloler (Iolanthe) and Bunthorne (Patience). Ken also spent many years in the chorus and it was a real family affair when his daughter Helen joined the Society with his wife Jean a member of our Front of House team. Ken’s last show was Funny Girl in 2002 but he and Jean continued supporting the society through their work on front of house until 2015.

Our thoughts are with both families.

SYNOPSIS

ACT 1

The curtain opens backstage at the Zangler Theatre in New York in the 1930’s. The last performance of The Zangler Follies is wrapping up for the season and Bobby Child, the rich son of a banking family, is backstage hoping for an audition with Zangler. Bobby fails to impress Zangler and, dejected, heads outside to be met by Irene, the wealthy woman to whom he has been engaged for five years, and then by his mother who demands that Bobby carry out a piece of banking business for her. Bobby is told to go to Deadrock, Nevada to foreclose on a rundown theatre.

When Bobby arrives in Deadrock, the town has clearly seen better days. Everett Baker is expecting the closure of his Gaiety Theatre. The only woman left in this forlorn town is Everett’s daughter, Polly Baker, who vows to get even with “Bobby Child” if she ever meets him. Bobby falls in love with Polly at first sight, not realizing who she is. Lank Hawkins, the owner of Deadrock’s saloon, and Polly’s ardent suitor, is not pleased to see a rival for Polly’s affections.

Bobby finds himself with quite a conundrum. If he forecloses on the theatre, he will lose the girl he loves. Inspired, he comes up with the idea of “putting on a show” to pay off the mortgage. Polly agrees to this plan until she finds out who Bobby is – that banker from New York! Bobby is heartbroken, but he decides to put on the show anyway, disguised as Zangler and helped by the arrival of the Follies Girls. Meanwhile, to Bobby’s dismay, Irene arrives, threatening to expose Bobby’s charade. Polly falls in love with Bobby’s impersonation of Zangler but when opening night arrives, everyone is disappointed to find that the only ticket buyers are the Fodors, an English couple writing a guidebook to the American West. What starts out as a disappointment changes into the realization that the show has galvanized the once-sleepy town. Meanwhile, the actual Zangler stumbles unnoticed into town.

ACT 2

Act Two opens in Lank’s saloon where Bobby is professing his love to Polly. Unfortunately, she is still in love with the man who she thinks is Zangler. Bobby is about to convince Polly that he has been impersonating “Zangler” when the real Zangler walks into the saloon looking for Tess. Zangler finds Tess but refuses her request to produce the show. Tess storms off. Zangler, now drunk, bemoans his fate. Bobby, dressed like Zangler, reels in to drown his sorrow over losing Polly. The two men act as mirror images of each other and lament their lost loves. The next morning, Polly sees two Zanglers passed out together. She realizes that Bobby was telling her the truth, but she feels hurt by his deception.

The townsfolk vote to give up on performing the show again. Bobby is disappointed and decides to return to New York when Polly refuses to admit that she wants him to stay. Zangler agrees to stay in Deadrock and back the show after all. He spends his last dollar putting together a top-notch production to show Tess how much he loves her. In New York, Bobby’s mother gives him the deed to the Zangler Theatre. Bobby’s happiness evaporates as the Follies Girls remind him that nothing matters as much as true love. Bobby takes off for Deadrock and Polly.

Deadrock has been transformed into a jewel of a city where the “Deadrock Follies” has been playing to packed houses, and the star of the show is Polly. Nevertheless, Polly misses Bobby and decides to look for him in New York. Polly and Bobby cross paths but are ultimately reunited in Deadrock. Irene marries Lank, and Bobby’s mother (who follows her son out West) is smitten with Everett. Bobby and Polly are together at last.
