At a time when daily newspapers in Vermont continue to experience declines in revenue, forcing reductions in reporting staff and limiting coverage of public policy and politics, VTDigger saw its readership grow by 50 percent in 2013, to more than 80,000 unique visitors each month.

Why? We’re filling a critical void in Vermont journalism. Every day, our website provides in-depth, accurate and

original news reporting that is available free to the public,  without paywalls.

In a  fall 2013 readership survey, 90 percent of 800 respondents said VTDigger publishes news they can’t get anywhere else.

We have a lean online news operation because we don’t require investments in newsprint or broadcast  equipment. We apply our resources directly to our mission, which is to provide free and impartial news coverage of  state government and major public policy issues that affect the lives of Vermonters. 

Our reporting has contributed significantly to the quality and scope of news coverage in Vermont, and  provides an essential public service. Our growth and our work is made possible thanks to the generous support of foundations, underwriters, and the individual contributions of thousands of readers.

WHO WE AREVTDigger is a statewide news website that publishes daily reports on state government, politics, consumer affairs, business and public policy. We are a project of the Vermont Journalism Trust, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting investigative journalism in Vermont. 

Our goal is to help Vermonters understand complex public policy issues. We publish four to 10 stories a day on subjects of statewide interest, including education, health care, energy, politics, human services, state finances and the environment.  We also publish audio, video, photos, and raw information in the form of press releases and government documents.

VTDigger does not promote or support any political ideology. Our news organization plays a watchdog role to support transparency in government, provide greater access to public information, and expand the scope of civil discourse in Vermont. Our objective is to hold public officials accountable and help readers understand what’s really going on in state government.

Launched in 2009, we are a trusted source of news in Vermont and have built a reputation for fair and accurate reporting. From our office in Montpelier, we offer our news for free to the public, without internet paywalls or fees, and have a statewide readership that includes traffic from every county in the state. Our readership in 2013 grew to over 80,000 unique visitors per month.

We are supported by foundation grants, business underwriting, and individual contributions through donations and major gifts.

SUPPORTING SERVICESVTDigger offers the following supporting services:

• In addition to publishing news on our website and social media channels, we also distribute a “Daily Digger” email to over 5,000 subscribers for free, which contains the day’s top stories, commentaries, and press releases.

• We distribute our news to community news outlets in Vermont that republish or broadcast our original reporting. We maintain a news distribution service with Vermont Business Magazine, WDEV, Valley News, Addison Independent, St. Albans Messenger, Stowe Reporter, Waterbury Record, Essex Reporter, Colchester Sun, Mountain Times, Bennington Banner, Manchester Journal and Brattleboro Reformer.

• We aggregate and display state government data in searchable databases. We also create information graphics to make data easier to understand visually, and to allow readers to see trends that affect the lives of Vermonters. 

• We host public events for Vermonters who want to learn more about public policy issues.

• We give underwriters the opportunity to reach our growing readership through advertising on our website.
