Welcome/Intro

Note: Today, Comic Host will try to portray your senior pastor in dress, mannerisms, speech, etc. His imitation can be terrible, but he should have a few key phrases, gestures, and/or visuals to make it clear who he is trying to be. This is meant to be humorous but also a positive take on your senior pastor. Comic Host is the joke here, not your pastor. We encourage you to adapt Comic Host’s dialogue to echo the sort of things your pastor would say.

Credible Host enters.

CREDIBLE HOST

Hey everyone! Welcome to [name of your FX]. I’m [Credible Host’s name], and my co-host, [Comic Host’s name], has asked to be excused today. Not sure why, but … anyhow. In case you’re new, we’d like to let you know what we do here, and why it’s so one-of-a-kind. To start with, YOU are one-of-a-kind and you chose to hang out with us. Plus, [name of your FX] is unique because it’s the place that kids bring their parents to learn. We think that’s the best way to do it, especially since what we’re learning is the super cool things God can do inside of us to change the world around us—stuff like compassion, generosity, and respect. Yeah, you heard that right. Every single one of you has the chance to be a world changer, which is why what we’re talking about this month is so perfect. Get ready to say it with me on the count of three. Start a drum roll on your legs. (Do drum roll.) One, two, three! CG: Individuality Definition

CREDIBLE HOST (CONT’D) Individuality is discovering who you are meant to be so you can make a difference. Now just the people who think they are one-of-a-kind, say it with me. Individuality is discovering who you are meant to be so you can make a difference. I sure hope you all said that, because it applies to every single one of you!

Comic Host enters, dressed as your senior pastor. Again, feel free to adjust his lines and actions to fit your pastor.

COMIC HOST

And today I will be making a masterful difference in the world … just as I always do!

CREDIBLE HOST [Comic Host’s name]? I thought you couldn’t make it today.

Comic Host looks around.

5

COMIC HOST [Comic Host’s name]? Who’s [Comic Host’s name]?

CREDIBLE HOST Pretty sure that’s the name on your driver’s license.

COMIC HOST On the contrary, my brethren.

Comic Host hands over a driver’s license-sized card.

Optional CG: Fake driver’s license using a picture of Comic Host in his current outfit, but with your head pastor’s name and (fake) info.

CREDIBLE HOST (reading the card)

[Senior Pastor’s first and last name]?

COMIC HOST [Comic Host’s name] couldn’t make it.

CREDIBLE HOST But you ARE—

COMIC HOST (interrupting)

It’s clear I hired you for your intellect rather than your fashion sense, but even your mind appears to be fuzzy at present.

Credible Host gives up and goes with it.

CREDIBLE HOST So, um, [Senior Pastor’s name], if [Comic Host’s name] shows up—

COMIC HOST He won’t. And a good thing, too!

CREDIBLE HOST Why’s that?

COMIC HOST Don’t you think he’s, well, kind of vanilla ice cream?

CREDIBLE HOST I like vanilla.

6

COMIC HOST But why choose vanilla when you can have salted caramel mocha? Birthday cake batter? Funky Monkey?

CREDIBLE HOST Well, everyone wants something a little different.

COMIC HOST Even vanilla?

CREDIBLE HOST I would hardly describe [Comic Host’s name] as being just plain vanilla.

COMIC HOST But … he’s just kind of … there. He can’t really do anything that matters.

CREDIBLE HOST He’s really good at burping the alphabet.

COMIC HOST (forgetting his role for a moment)

Oh yeah, just check out my “Q”!

Comic Host burps a “Q,” catches himself, and returns to his role.

COMIC HOST (CONT’D)

That’ll never change the world. Not like [Senior Pastor’s name] … I mean … MY brilliant words from the pulpit!

CREDIBLE HOST But [Comic Host’s name] makes people laugh. And that, my friend, can change the world.

COMIC HOST Really?

CREDIBLE HOST Really.

Comic Host considers for a moment. Then he takes off one small piece of his costume (glasses, a pen, etc.) with a flourish.

COMIC HOST

Ta-da!

7

CREDIBLE HOST Ta-da?

COMIC HOST It’s me—[Comic Host’s name]!

CREDIBLE HOST Oooo. Now I see.

COMIC HOST It was me all along.

CREDIBLE HOST Miraculous, how you and [Senior Pastor’s name] look so much alike. It’s almost like you were trying to be him instead of you.

COMIC HOST Who wouldn’t want to be [Senior Pastor’s name]? He only has to work one day a week.

Credible Host does a take to the audience. Then he looks back at Comic Host.

CREDIBLE HOST

God created [Senior Pastor’s name] with special gifts so he can teach people. And he created you with unique gifts, too.

COMIC HOST You know how to catch a one-of-a-kind tiger?

CREDIBLE HOST Um, no?

COMIC HOST U-neak up on him! (Totally crack up) Like sneak … but unique … get it?

CREDIBLE HOST You are definitely unique … in more ways than one. I think this month’s widget might just help you out.

Credible Host hands Comic Host a Focus Frame widget.

COMIC HOST

Oh, cool, a little square collar for my chinchilla!

8

CREDIBLE HOST Actually, it’s a Focus Frame. It’s got space for you, and all these kids, to write down the unique traits that equip you for what God has made you to do!

COMIC HOST Like farming chinchillas?

CREDIBLE HOST It’s probably best to ask someone else for what they see in you. Kids, you can check with your parents, or maybe a Small Group Leader or teacher. Ask what they think makes you one-of-a-kind, and then write it down to remind you.

Comic Host pulls out a can of spray paint. He holds up his frame.

CREDIBLE HOST

What’s that for?

COMIC HOST I’m going to write what makes me unique in spray paint calligraphy. Got any suggestions?

CREDIBLE HOST So many. But let’s let these people see what’s happening in the clubhouse.

As they exit …

COMIC HOST Hey, if I wear these clothes every day, think I can park in [Senior Pastor’s name]’s spot?

CREDIBLE HOST Just ’til they catch you at it.

Credible Host tugs Comic Host offstage.

Intro Sketch SFX: Your “Intro Sketch” music

Marshall runs in closely followed by Tyler. Marshall is dressed like a larger-than-life movie director from the 1940s (beret, scarf, white button-up, slacks). Marshall also carries an old megaphone to talk through (not an electric one).

MARSHALL

This is it—the day the world has waited for!

TYLER The day of all days!

MARSHALL Today … we … (speaking through megaphone) END WORLD HUNGER!

TYLER And the crowd goes wild. (Cheer wildly.) Thank you, Tyler and Marshall! You’re the greatest! How DID you do it? (Cheer some more; then reality hits.) Um … how DO we do this?

MARSHALL By using our gifts, of course.

TYLER Ah. (Beat.) What gifts?

MARSHALL Tyler, you’re a filmmaker of the highest caliber.

TYLER Oh. Well, that I am.

MARSHALL And I, with my understanding of the arts, history, and culture, have excellent insight into the human condition and THEREFORE am an excellent actor.

TYLER So we are going to make a movie starring you to, you know, to … get food … people feel full …

MARSHALL (into megaphone)

END WORLD HUNGER!

10

TYLER Yes!

MARSHALL YES! Isn’t it grand?

TYLER And, uh, just how do we do this?

MARSHALL Simple—we make a multi-million-dollar film, distribute it across the world, have it be a trillion-dollar success, and spend all profits for food … FOR THE WORLD!

TYLER Wow. That’s gotta be a good movie.

MARSHALL How hard could it be? TO WORK!

TYLER I’ll grab some, you know, writing utensil … Egyptians called it papyrus …

MARSHALL (into megaphone)

Pencil and paper?

TYLER YES!

MARSHALL Excellent. And I shall sit on the couch and wait for you to retrieve it.

Marshall walks over to the couch and waits as Tyler starts scrounging around the room for supplies. Vinny enters. He is walking around on painting stilts and has a selfie stick (with a smartphone attached) taped to his head or attached with some crude device. He is also chewing gum and blowing bubbles. He wears a stopwatch as well.

VINNY

Hey, mi amigos! Check this out! SFX: Casio watch alarm

11

As Vinny walks, he blows a bubble. It pops on his face. He looks at Marshall and Tyler with an expression to say, “Isn’t that amazing?” Note: For the rest of the sketch, Vinny continues to move around. If he stops, he needs to walk in place.

MARSHALL

(into megaphone) CUT! (To Vinny) What are you doing?

VINNY Glad you asked. I’m trying to break a world record and—

MARSHALL Never mind, Vinny. As I am often intrigued by your various exploits and adventures, I have no time. Tyler and I have begun to tackle one of humanity’s greatest plagues.

VINNY What?

MARSHALL (into megaphone)

ENDING WORLD HUNGER!

VINNY When?

MARSHALL (into megaphone)

TODAY!

VINNY (reacting to megaphone)

DUDE!

MARSHALL (into megaphone)

SORRY!

VINNY (beat; to himself)

Makes what I’m doing feel ridiculous. I’m seeing how long I can walk on these stilts without stopping while blowing bubbles so I can—

12

MARSHALL Yes, that is ridiculous.

Tyler finally stops rummaging around and holds up paper and pencils.

TYLER

I got the paper and pencils.

MARSHALL Excellent. Let’s begin. First, we write the world’s greatest movie ever. So let’s begin.

Marshall and Tyler stare off into space. Vinny keeps walking around.

SFX: Casio watch alarm

Vinny blows a bubble as he walks and it pops.

VINNY DUDE! Did you see that bubble?

MARSHALL Vinny! We’re trying to change the world over here. Please!

VINNY Sorry.

TYLER OH! I’ve got a beginning.

MARSHALL Tell it to me.

TYLER (deep voice)

IN A WORLD …

MARSHALL Quickly. Write that down. Then what?

TYLER Don’t … know.

MARSHALL Good start, though. (Into megaphone) JUST KEEP THINKING!

13

They start to stare off in space again. SFX: Casio watch alarm

Again, Vinny blows a bubble.

VINNY DUDES! THAT bubble was even bigger.

MARSHALL Vinny, we are doing work of the utmost importance while you try and chew gum and walk.

VINNY On stilts.

MARSHALL Please! Leave!

VINNY Wow. Okay. I guess I’ll … I guess I’ll see you guys later.

Vinny exits.

TYLER Don’t you think you were being kind of harsh on him?

MARSHALL Maybe. But we are using our gifts to make a major difference.

TYLER Trying to, at least.

MARSHALL He was just going to be a distraction. Now, read to me what we have so far.

TYLER (standing; dramatically)

IN A WORLD …

MARSHALL (Beat.) It needs more.

TYLER Agreed.

MARSHALL (Beat.) Let’s get a snack from Gordo’s refrigerator.

TYLER Good idea.

MARSHALL (into megaphone)

LUNCH BREAK! TAKE FIVE, EVERYONE!

Rapid Response Parse the Word

Comic Host enters, still dressed as your senior pastor. He rolls a white board with the word INDIVIDUALITY in large letters or carries an already prepared poster board covered with a cloth.

COMIC HOST

I know you’re all still shocked to discover that I am NOT actually [Senior Pastor’s name]. However, [Senior Pastor’s name] and I share a deep depth of knowledge and study regarding the dead languages that form the terapatetic roots of many important words. If he were here right now, I feel sure that he would help us all dissect the Latin, Greek, and Parmesan origins of our Life App for the month: INDIVIDUALITY! So without further ado, I shall now … “Parse the Word”! Pay close attention. There will be a test … of [Credible Host’s name]’s patience. Go!

Comic Host either quickly writes the following, or uncovers the already written segments as he “explains” them. This should go VERY fast.

COMIC HOST (CONT’D)

I-N. In … as in: totally in … as in: individuality is hip. I-N-D-I. Indie. Movies from the indie film scene are completely unique. D-I-V. Div … which refers to divinity, our pastor’s one-of-a-kind seminary degree, and also a type of candy made with corn syrup, air, and pixie dreams. V-I-D. Vid. When I was a kid, indie films went straight to vid. Those of you under 12 don’t know what that is, which just compounds your individuality. D-U-A-L. Duel … as in: if I had to fight a duel, my unique weapon would be a marshmallow shooter. L-I-T. Lit … as in: literature, ’cause everyone thinks they’re so special they gotta turn their life into a book with a movie based on it. T-Y. Tie. No two tie-dyed shirts are alike. And there you have it: INDIVIDUALITY! I hope your brain feels smarter.

Word SFX: Your “Word” music

There is a map of the Mediterranean on an easel behind a desk. Trip Daily walks in. He looks like a car salesman from a 1970’s B-movie (slicked back hair, wears a suit that looks like it was made out of couch upholstery, etc.). He comes in and pushes a button on the answering machine on the desk. He mouths every single word along with it.

TRIP DAILY (V.O.)

Hello, and thanks for calling TRIP DAILY, travel consultant for all your BIBLICAL ERA TRAVEL NEEDS. If you are interested in booking a trip, LEAVE A MESSAGE!

FEMALE VOICE (V.O.) No new message.

TRIP DAILY Wow. (Beat.) I’ll just chalk this up to the fact the phone hasn’t been invented yet. SFX: Store door chime

Paul enters with Timothy (very young man). They’re both wearing simple biblical robes.

PAUL

Excuse me. My name’s Paul. Are you open?

Trip Daily scrambles over to Paul. He shakes his hand violently the entire time he talks to him.

TRIP DAILY

Of COURSE I am! Hello, hello, hello! I’m Trip Daily, here for all your Biblical Era Travel needs. Need a quick exodus out of Egypt? No problem. Want to rent a fiery chariot for the weekend for a quick getaway? I can do that. Need a key to get back into the Garden of Eden? (Beat.) Not gonna happen. Sorry.

PAUL No problem. This is Timothy, and I’m Paul.

17

TRIP DAILY Paul. What a great name. What’s that short for?

PAUL Paul?

TRIP DAILY Well, how about that? It’s a whole name and a nickname all at once! (Switch to shaking Timothy’s hand.) Timothy! Very nice to meet you! Timothy … what kind of name is that?

TIMOTHY It’s … a name?

TRIP DAILY How about that! Better than a fichus! Right? Then you’d be a plant! HA!

PAUL We’re looking for someone to help us make some travel arrangements, and—

TRIP DAILY Say no more! Say no more! You’ve come to the right place. I can book your trip today … or my name isn’t Trip Daily. See how I used my name in the sentence? Clever, huh?

PAUL Yep.

TRIP DAILY HOW ABOUT THAT? All right, gentlemen, have a seat and we’ll get started.

Trip Daily FINALLY stops shaking their hands and moves to sit behind his desk.

TRIP DAILY (CONT’D)

Now, what can I do for the two of you? Where are you headed? Tarshish? Got a great deal on a trip to Tarshish. One might say a WHALE of a deal! HA!

PAUL Well—

TRIP DAILY I’ve currently got an INCREDIBLE deal on a one-way ticket to the Dead Sea.

Trip holds up a picture of the Dead Sea.

TRIP DAILY (CONT’D) Beautiful this time of year, AND it’s less dead than normal. And the smell is barely noticeable.

18

PAUL

Well—

TRIP DAILY What am I talking about? No one wants a one-way ticket to the Dead Sea. RIDICULOUS! Let’s just start from the beginning. How about that? (Grab pad of paper and pencil.) All right. Is your trip for business or pleasure?

PAUL Well, a bit of both, right?

TRIP DAILY Both?! What kind of business do you plan on doing? Professional water skiing? HA! (Suddenly serious) I’m all ears.

TIMOTHY (looks to Paul; a little unsure)

Well …

PAUL Be my guest.

TIMOTHY We’re missionaries. Wow. Feels cool to say that.

TRIP DAILY Missionaries? How about that. So you guys sell paper people write notes on? Lovely.

TIMOTHY No. Not stationery—missionaries. We travel around and tell people who Jesus is. This is Paul. He used to be called Saul and, well, he’s been traveling everywhere to tell everyone about Jesus.

TRIP DAILY Oh, yes! Heard of Him—Savior of the world!

TIMOTHY Well, the reason WHY you’ve heard of Him is probably because of this guy.

PAUL Well, there are other missionaries as well. In fact, this is Timothy’s first day as a missionary.

TRIP DAILY How about that.

19

PAUL Yes. Turns out he is very gifted at reaching others.

TRIP DAILY How about that!

PAUL Yes. I recently was traveling through Derbe—

TRIP DAILY The hat?

PAUL No the city.

TRIP DAILY How about that.

PAUL And eventually I came to the City of Lystra.

TRIP DAILY Where they make the mouthwash.

PAUL (Beat.) Sure. And, as soon as I met up with other followers of Christ, they kept telling me how amazing this young man was. Plus, his mother is Jewish and his father is Greek, so he knows how to talk to people from all walks of life. After meeting him, I realized that he needed to come with me to spread the gospel to the entire world.

TRIP DAILY Excellent. Sounds like you need a trip. Am I right? Am I right?

TIMOTHY You’re right.

TRIP DAILY So, where you gonna go?

PAUL Um … the entire world.

TRIP DAILY Wait. You want a trip that will take you across the entire world? Because if you said the entire world, well, that would be … that would be the biggest sale I’ve ever made. Did you say …?

20

TIMOTHY The entire world.

TRIP DAILY THE ENTIRE WORLD?

PAUL The whole thing. Every city. Every place. Every person.

TRIP DAILY THE ENTIRE WORLD?

PAUL Right. So, do you think maybe you could help us out?

TRIP DAILY THE ENTIRE WORLD?

PAUL I think we’ve clarified that.

TIMOTHY I just want to use my gifts to help the churches in the world strengthen in faith and spread the awesome news about Jesus and who He is to—

TRIP DAILY THE ENTIRE WORLD?

TIMOTHY (whispering to Paul)

I … I think he’s in shock.

PAUL (whispering to Timothy)

This might be too big of a project for him. (To Trip Daily) Excuse me? EXCUSE ME? Um, we’re just gonna go …

TRIP DAILY THE ENTIRE WORLD?

PAUL Yes. Yep. All over the world. Okay. Bye.

TRIP DAILY Okay … sorry … got a little excited there. So where were we … (look around) … hello? Hello? Where’d they …? I better go catch up with them. This could be the biggest day of my career!

As Trip exits …

TRIP DAILY (CONT’D) Hey! HEY! I can help you go ALL OVER THE WORLD! I know a guy with a boat … and a camel. Do you need a Sherpa!? HEY!

Storyteller enters.

STORYTELLER So, Trip might not be the best travel agent, but I think he’ll get there someday. He may just need to have someone take him under their wing and show him how to relax and focus on what it is he’s good at doing, like Paul did with Timothy. Paul was gifted at teaching people who Jesus was. And when he met Timothy, he recognized that Timothy had gifts that could be used the same way. Now, we might not have the same gifts Paul and Timothy have, but we are all gifted in ways that can make a difference in the lives of the people around us. And, when we truly latch on to this idea and believe it, God can use the very gifts and abilities He’s given us to show people who He is. That’s pretty cool. Let’s pray. SFX: Your “prayer” music

STORYTELLER (CONT’D) Dear God, help each and every one of us in this room discover the gifts You have given us. And help us to use those gifts to make a difference in the world around us. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen. SFX: Your “Word” music

Tyler and Marshall enter. They both look haggard and tired.

TYLER

This is impossible!

MARSHALL No, Tyler. NO! The world depends on us! Quick, read to me what we have.

TYLER (CONT’D) (half dramatic)

IN A WORLD …

MARSHALL That’s still not enough. WAIT! What if we follow that up with a stunt?

TYLER YES! (Writing) A stunt happens.

MARSHALL Who do we know that’s gifted with stunts?

Vinny enters. He’s still wearing everything he had on in the Intro Sketch. He’s very excited.

VINNY

GUYS! SFX: Casio watch alarm

Vinny blows another bubble.

VINNY (CONT’D) I’ve got 15 seconds left!

Marshall tries to get in front of Vinny and stop him.

MARSHALL (into megaphone)

VINNY! (Normal) So glad you are here. We need your help.

VINNY Ah! Don’t stop me. I can’t stop moving. I got 10 more seconds.

MARSHALL But Vinny, we need your help to make our movie come to life.

VINNY Dude, that’s what I’m trying to do!

MARSHALL By walking on stilts? What are you talking about? SFX: Casio watch alarm

Vinny blows a bubble. As soon as it pops … SFX: House alarm (play for about five seconds)

VINNY YES! YES! I did it! I DID IT! Help me get these things off.

Vinny sits down and takes the stilts off as he says all of the following dialogue. Note: Make sure there is a stool on stage or a high place for him to sit while he takes off the stilts.

VINNY (CONT’D)

Sorry I interrupted you guys. I know you’re doing big things here—

TYLER What’d you just do?

VINNY Oh, I just broke the record for the longest time walking on stilts and chewing gum.

MARSHALL

Wow. What a gift. (Into megaphone) BACK TO THE MOVIE!

VINNY (to Tyler)

See, I can’t walk and chew gum at the same time, BUT I discovered I CAN walk on stilts and chew gum.

MARSHALL (into megaphone)

ANYWAY!

VINNY So I looked up the world record for walking on stilts and chewing gum … and there wasn’t one.

MARSHALL Imagine that.

VINNY So I decided to set the new world record. I used the selfie stick to record the entire thing. AND I got people to sponsor me.

TYLER Sponsor? People paid you to do this?

VINNY Well, not me. If I broke the record, people signed up to donate money to the Williams family.

MARSHALL Who’s the Williams family?

VINNY Oh, they’re just a family down on their luck. Just thought I could use my gifts to make a difference in someone else’s life so hopefully they won’t have to worry about paying for food and bills for a couple of months. (Beat.) I mean, I know it’s nothing like curing world hunger with a big fancy movie, but maybe you can cross one person off your list, right?

MARSHALL Vinny, I owe you an apology. You … you were using your gifts to make a difference.

VINNY Yeah, but just for one family.

MARSHALL That’s more families than we are helping. I think I was more interested in doing something awesome than actually making a difference. I’m sorry I was mean to you.

VINNY Ah, no worries, dude. Actually, if you guys wanna take a break, I could use some help uploading this footage to the donation site.

TYLER Dude. Totally on that.

MARSHALL Me, too. Say, I could help write something for you to say to those who sponsored you.

VINNY Dude, that’s awesome! I’d appreciate that. So would the Williams family.

TYLER Let’s go.

VINNY Gum?

Vinny offers gum. He pops a piece into his own mouth, starts chewing, and then starts to walk out the door and falls down.

VINNY (CONT’D)

Maybe I should put the stilts back on.

MARSHALL So, there I was trying to change the world with my big fancy movie, while Vinny was just doing it.

TYLER Yeah, to make a difference in the world, you don’t have to change the world all at once. Just start with one person a time.

VINNY Yeah, and all you have to do is use what you are good at. Even stilt walking and chewing gum can make a difference. (Blow a bubble and fall down.) Still need to put the stilts back on.

CREDIBLE HOST The world is a huge place. And sometimes we can get caught in the trap of thinking, “The world is so big, and I’m just little ol’ me. What can I do? Can I make a difference?” And the answer is absolutely, positively yes. Sometimes making a difference in the world isn’t changing the world all at once but helping the people around you one at a time. And you are uniquely gifted to help others. That’s why it’s so important for us to figure out just how God wired each of us so we can make a difference. Maybe you can make people laugh. Maybe you’re great at sewing. Maybe you’re super smart at math. Whatever it is, God wants to use your gifts to make a difference in the lives of other people and ultimately to point others to Him. So, this week, make sure to talk about your Focus Frames. Talk about what your friends and family see in you. Then, take some time to think of ways you can use your gifts to make a difference in someone else’s life. Announcements Invite parents and kids back and promote resources.
