Why do all this?• The reason we are unseating these assumptions is to get past some

hangups we have about reading, writing, and meaning making. • I am hoping that you can take these complications and apply them

in other contexts. More specifically, for this class, I am hoping that your papers will reflect the style of reading we have been discussing in class, no matter what topic you choose to write about.

• What does that mean?– Be careful when you refer to an author– Be leery of the ‘simple’ answer, look for complications. – Don’t trust true, ultimate meanings and don’t write as if there is one. – Likewise, look out for symbol addition and broad generalizations. – Avoid writing about things you can’t know: author’s intention,

author’s psychology, reader’s reaction, etc. Stick to what you do have, ie. The text.

3. Before 5pm this Friday, Go to the Dropbox page4. Sign in with your UWNetID5. Click on the assignment – “short paper 1”6. Click on Browse7. In the dialogue box that comes up, find your paper welsh1.doc.
