WELCOME BACK A Note from the School Counseling Department…. Happy Senior Year! The time you have
been awaiting since you stepped on campus in August 2017 has finally arrived…SENIOR
YEAR. We share in your excitement, and we are here to assist you along the way. It is our
goal to assist you in making a smooth transition from high school to the real world. Things
may look a lot different than you expected, but the fact that you are completing your final year
of high school remains the same. Senior IGP (individual graduation plan) meetings will begin
October 5, 2020. You will receive a letter with your appointment time in the mail. If you have
questions prior to your meeting, please feel free to contact your school counselor.
ATTENTION: Last names Sk-Z: Please remember to sign up for your IGP meeting before
Oct. 2nd. The link has been sent to you in Canvas. Thanks, Ms. Scott
GENERAL INFORMATION Applying for College Instructions Most colleges/universities prefer that you apply on-line. Once you complete the on-line
application, check to see if the institution requires you to have a recommendation form
completed by your school counselor. You will need to notify your school counselor to send
your transcript. Colleges/Universities do not automatically notify school counselors that a
student has applied. Please pay close attention to deadlines to give your counselor at least one
week’s notice to process your requests for recommendation letters, transcripts, etc.
SAT/ACT If you need to register for the SAT, you can register online at www.collegeboard.com
If you need to register for the ACT, you can register online at www.act.org
You do not have to wait apply until you receive your test scores to college.
Most colleges/universities require official test scores that must be requested through
www.collegeboard.com or www.act.org. Your test scores are not included on your transcript.
College Visits All seniors receive two college days. If you would like to visit a college/university, you will
need to contact them in advance to research their visitation policy. While you are visiting the
college/university, you will need to obtain verification of your visit on the institution’s
letterhead and submit to the Attendance Office the day after your visit. You do not need
permission or paperwork from Northwestern High School prior to your visit.
Job Shadowing
All students receive two job shadowing days per year from September 1st – April 30th at a time
arranged by the student and parent. To receive credit for job shadowing and an excused school
activity day, the student must provide an excuse on the letterhead of the company where they
job shadowed within three school days of the absence. All letters should be submitted to Mrs.
Dean, Career Counselor, in the Kairos Kafe (A104).
Military If you’re planning to join the military after high school, please make sure you have taken the
ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery). If you have questions about the
ASVAB or need assistance in speaking to a military recruiter, please see Mrs. Dean in the
Kairos Kafe (A104).
Prospective College Athletes
If you’re planning to participate in a sport at the college level, please make sure you have
registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse. Please see Mr. Herrington in the School
Counseling Office for additional information.
Senior Resume
It is helpful to have a senior resume to give to your counselor, teacher or anyone you ask for a
recommendation letter. The following is a list of items you can include in your resume: GPA,
class rank, types of courses taken, future plans, awards/achievements, volunteer
work/community service, club memberships, athletic information, employment, etc.

TIPS OF THE MONTH An application serves as your first impression for a job, college or scholarship. Complete your
applications neatly with blue or black ink in their entirety. Avoid “scratching out” mistakes.
Mark one line through mistakes or complete another application. Make sure there are not any
smudges or spots on your application. Do not fold or wrinkle your application.
Waive your right to view recommendation letters. Admissions counselors realize that if a
recommender is aware that the student can access the letter at any time, he/she may not be as
honest.
Provide ample time for the recommender to complete the letter. More time equates to a more
thoughtful and planned out recommendation. Less time equates to a general recommendation
that has no personality.
