days building work and a hot lap around Hampden Downs race track.Renea says more fundraisers are planned and the support from Nel-son Weekly readers has been inspi-rational. “Everyone said they saw us in the Weekly and said ‘keep it going’. That was really nice to hear and it’s good for Phoenix.”Phoenix is due to head back down to Christchurch this week for an-other scan on his back as doctors now think the tumour may not be active.

It was in Christchurch, while re-ceiving chemotherapy, that Phoe-nix had his last message from the Mad Butcher, says Renea. “It’s really cool he’s coming down because last year he sent a big par-cel down to Phoenix with all sorts of rugby league jerseys, signed posters and hats. It was really nice of him and it’s great he is able to help out again.”To send Phoenix or his family a message, email [email protected] or to make a donation, the account is The Phoenix Treatment Appeal, 03 - 0703 - 0829333 – 000.

A wide-reaching police sting saw thousands of drivers stopped in Nelson over the weekend, with hundreds of tickets issued. The operation was so succesful police say they are planning another one.Among the drivers stopped were 13 drunk driv-ers, who are now facing prosecution. The sting was a joint effort between police, NZ Transport Agency, Canterbury Traffic Alcohol Group and staff from the Nelson Court.A total of 9857 vehicles were stopped at check-points in Nelson City and Motueka over three nights. Five disqualified drivers were caught and 15 other drivers had their licences suspended for various offences.Police say they were also able to catch people who

had not paid fines, with the courts impounding five cars which belonged to fine defaulters.Highway Patrol team leader sergeant Stu Wright says while it was disappointing that 13 people had driven after drinking, the positive thing was the operation was successful in netting them and getting them off the road, along with the five dis-qualified drivers.Stu says working with the other agencies proved very successful. “This multi-agency approach is something we will utilise more. We’re sending a very clear mes-sage to the public that drink driving won’t be tol-erated.”More than 300 infringement notices were issued during the operation.

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE: Tom Turner,

right, an AUT design student, brought his

“Wailing Wall” to Nel-son’s 1903 Square last

week. Tom has travelled all around New Zealand with the project as part

of his Master’s thesis. Tom encouraged people

to write a message, put it in a bottle and add it

to the wall. Ella Dick-son and brother Leo

of Nelson were among many locals who added

a message to the wall. Ella drew a picture of

a whale coming up for breath, because “that’s

what I think the wall looks like.” Tom hopes

to display the messages in a gallery or book.

'We'll know next week'Commission due to annouce amalgamation

decision next TuesdayA decision on whether ratepayers in Nelson and Tasman will need to vote for an amalgamation of its councils is scheduled to be made a week from today. The Local Government Commis-sion last June announced its draft decision, saying a merger of Nelson City and Tasman District councils would be best for the two regions. After seven months of fur-ther review, consultation and analysis, the commis-sion will next week an-nounce its final decision. If it reverses its opinion from last year the issue will be dead and buried. If it upholds its original deci-sion, the contentious issue will go to the polls.A majority vote in both re-gions will be needed before the two councils can amal-gamate. Pro-amalgamation cam-paigner and Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio started the ball rolling on the issue in 2009 when he started a pe-tition which gained ten per cent of voter’s signatures in both regions. Once he passed that threshold the Local Government was forced by law to review the governance of the two re-gions.Aldo says the process has been a long one but he is satisfied it has been done right."The commission has looked very closely at it and spoken to a wide range of people and organisations. I'm confident they have done their homework and then some."He says he is confident of a positive decision for amalgamation but is not counting his chickens."I'm never 100 per cent confident

because you never know what they are thinking, but I'm reasonably happy. We'll know next week I sup-pose."Tasman mayor Richard Kempthrone is opposed to an amal-gamation, putting him at direct

odds with his counterpart. He says he is hopeful of a decision saying amalgama-tion should be taken off the table, because it would save ratepayers money in a ref-erendum that would likely say no anyway."Walking around talking to people in Tasman, I don't think they would like to see amalgamation come in and I'd be surprised if a ma-jority of Tasman residents voted for it."He says whatever the LGC decision is, he will be glad to get the process to a con-clusion."It's been hanging over us long enough."Aldo says he will be happy if the issue gets put in the hands of the people."For 20 years we have de-bated whether or not amal-gamation would be good for the region. If we finally get to have a say, that will be the real win and that was what the petition was all about."If, as expected, the LGC sends the issue to a vote,

the polls will likely open on March 31, closing on April 21.If voters in Tasman and Nelson vote to go ahead with the proposal a new council election would be held on or around October 13.If next week's decision, already de-layed several times, is delayed again, it is understood it would only be by a couple of days.

Flower power at Nelson flower showStoke gardener Arch Crerar was "pretty chuffed" to be amongst the top winners at the Nelson Hor-ticultural Society's annual summer show on the weekend, even if it came at a cost.Arch's champion blooms were two highlights among the more than 500 entries at the show, a record in recent years. Scores of people came through the doors to view the flowers at the Stoke Memorial Hall but Arch says the cost of his hobby is creeping up. "The cost of water now is incred-

ible, council makes our recreation impossible."Arch says he was happy to come away with the champion dahila and winning the small/mini-ture ball section, considering the calibre he was up against. "I walked in the room and thought 'man, there are some good flowers this year, it will be a tough one to win'. So I'm happy to win, that's why we enter."Stoke's Heather Brooker won the most outstand-ing exhibit in floral art.

Holiday fun heads to the beach

NEWS IN BRIEFNEW ciTizENS: Tomorrow 31 Nelsonians are expected to swear allegiance to New Zea-land and become citizens. The ceremony, at Civic House, will see 19 British, six American, two Israeli, along with a German, Burmese, Indian and an Irish woman gain citizenship.

coUNcil cEo qUiTS: Nelson City Council chief Keith Marshall has resigned, leaving the role this April. Keith is three years into the job and has overseen major management chang-es, which were hailed by mayor Aldo Miccio is the wake of the resignation. Aldo also high-lighted the financial performance of coun-cil over the past few years. Those financial results had enabled councillors to propose the lowest rate rise in 20 years in last year’s draft annual plan. Nelson City Council had posted a surplus of around $42 million for the past year, well up from surpluses in previous years. “As a result, the city is in great financial shape,” says Aldo.

RUNNERS NOT WALKERS: Competing in a school holiday activity last week was from left; Troy, Jayden, Michael, Luke and James, all have the surname Walker. The group is made up to two sets of unrelated brothers. Photo: Andrew Board.

Around 20 kids on school holiday had a day at the beach last week, thanks to a combined school holi-day programme.Legend Kids Holiday Programme, based at Nelson College, and Tahunanui Community Centre Holi-day Programme joined forces and went to Tahu-nanui Beach for a fun day out. Activities including swimming, a picnic, sand castle competition and surf lifesaving drills, including the 50 metre run and dive for markers. After each run two people were eliminated. Stoke’s Troy Walker was the eventual winner, beating his brother Luke in the final. Both holiday programmes continue this week.

Every month or so Nelson’s Church St transforms into a “vibrant, happening scene” of Latin dance, dubbed by some the city’s Latin Quarter.Every Saturday night Tango nights are held

at Kush and once a month, also on Satur-day’s, Baby G’s across the road hosts it’s Salsa night. Together they attract people of all ages to classes, club mixers and dance events. David Bagshaw, a teacher from Tango Pas-sion says Church St is “transformed into a

Latin Quarter” when Baby G’s Latin dance parties combine with Kush Café’s Cafe Del Tango. “It feels like you could be anywhere in Buenos Aires,” he says.Salsa and Tango are very different dance techniques with Tango described by dance tutor Monica Gomez as an intense con-

versation between two people. “When the dancers understand the principles of Tan-go movement the dance becomes a spon-taneous creation and the possibilities are endless,” says Monica. Salsa is “more like a party” according to Annie Giles, who can be credited for bringing Salsa to Nelson and inspiring a sub-culture in the sunshine city.Annie started the first Salsa classes in Nel-son 16 years ago. For a time it became the largest group in NZ, with over 100 people rocking up for the beginners classes. An-nie says many of those years, based at the Boathouse, were about giving people the opportunity to spend an hour meeting and greeting new people, connecting with oth-ers while moving to the Latin Rhythms. “The core of our classes was socialisation, seeing the dance as part of a culture and way of life rather than a set of steps,” says Annie. That ethos has been carried on by many dance students and teachers around the Nelson region. Salsa Buena, a group of ex-pert Salsa teachers and enthusiastic Salsa dancers, are celebrating their first birth-day this weekend with a Havana Nights themed party and fundraiser for Women’s Refuge in the Victory Room in Trafalgar Centre from 8pm.The new season of classes is about to step off, with both Tango and Salsa beginners classes commencing in early February. Although the Latin dances are very differ-ent on the floor, the styles have combined well in Nelson, says David. “I started out dancing the salsa and eventually moved over to Tango so the two dances comple-ment each other, and you can certainly see that in Nelson’s Latin Quarter and at Cafe Del Tango.”

The hills are alive with the sound of native bird calls once more after over two years of trapping pests. Volunteers, lead by local conservationist Bryce Buckland, have been tramping the tracks to re-bait traps that have been diligently removing rats, possums and other vermin from the Gram-pians since their installation in October 2009. Bryce says that the goal is to increase numbers of native birds such as the fantail and bellbird, and although they are unable to quantify how many birds there are now, he receives feedback that there is vast improvement. “A hawk has been roving over my place,” says Janet Whittingham, data administrator for the group. “It’s just a supposition but I think it’s be-cause it can’t find any rats on the Grampians.” She reports that over 1400 pests, including 631 rats, have been trapped throughout the reserve.

She says locals have begun seeing native birds, even Tuis, around the city and in their gardens for the first time in decades. The effort has attracted a group of around twenty volunteers, who check and rebait the traps over the dozen trap lines regularly. Many of these are family groups, such as the Palmers. Sue Palmer says that her family became involved because it was a cause right on their back doorstep. “It’s giving the kids a sense of social responsibil-ity.” The Palmer’s two children, Lucy and Ben, say they enjoy the family activity and being involved with their community.Volunteers say they’re catching less and less as time goes on, which is a great sign, and that birdsong has increased immeasurably. “Two years ago you just didn’t hear anything,” says Mary Davies, “it’s made a huge difference.”Visit the Birdlife on the Grampains page at www.forestandbird.org.nz to get involved.

Nelson’s summer film festival at the Suter Cinema is enjoying one of its “best years yet,” with screenings of the Metropolitan Operas attracting higher numbers in Nelson than any-where in the country, and not just on a per capita bases. “Nelson is currently tracking as the number one town in New Zealand with The Magic Flute, which is as-tounding given the population vers-es the likes of Auckland and Wel-lington,” says Andrew Shreeve from Rialto. “The season for showings of the Metropolitan Operas has been ex-tended past their original expiry date around New Zealand, mainly due to the strong demand shown in Nelson.” Louise Egan, promoter for State Cin-ema, says the festival is a chance to bring Nelson some of the top picks from the International Film Festival, including local, international and foreign language films. “We have done really well this year because we are offering something

a bit different. It is the first year we have had the Operas showing, we’ve got the Bogart films from the 40’s and 50’s and Nelsonians are a get-ting taste for documentaries too,” says Louise. One film attracting good numbers is ‘When a City Falls’ a Kiwi docu-mentary by Gerard Smythes about the Christchurch earthquakes. Lou-ise describes it as a really uplifting, positive piece of history caught on film and thinks a lot of visitors from Christchurch have taken the oppor-tunity to go to a quake-free cinema while on holiday in Nelson. The Suter Cinema creates a relaxed environment for movie goers, a chance to escape the beach and the hot afternoon sun. “It’s cool, peace-ful and quiet, a really nice way to go to a movie and not have to be around heaps and heaps of people,” says Louise. The festival runs until Monday Feb-ruary 6, where you can catch classic cinema, opera and some of the best films from 2011.

TUESDAY 24 January 2012 This Week10

When Guy Williams made his network television debut he wasn’t Guy Williams at all. He was Jay Pryor, a pro-whaling liber-tarian.Guy, who works for TV3’s The Jono Pro-ject, formerly Jono’s New Show, was in charge of a skit called Quest for Fame where he hoped to make the show’s host, Jono Pryor, as famous as possible. A press release, containing the details of non-profit organisation, Commercial Whaling New Zealand, was created, along with a fake website that Guy couldn’t be bothered making so it said “website under construc-tion”. It was designed to fool a small com-munity newspaper. Instead it was picked up by Fairfax Media’s Sunday News.TVNZ then followed suit and wanted to bring Jay on its top morning show, Break-fast, to speak about the group’s support for commercial whaling. Guy lasted five min-utes with controversial host Paul Henry and says the skit went much better than they had first hoped. TVNZ filmed the interview at 6am, and it wasn’t until the afternoon that they found out it was all a hoax, a midday news bulle-tin later. “It was a classic case of the whole thing working too well. It was supposed to be a little laugh and it ended up on the front page of the [New Zealand] Herald. The whole thing was a massive shambles

on TVNZ’s part,” says Guy. “We did this as a publicity stunt. The other story on the front page of the Herald was ‘New Zea-land student tasers pregnant woman.’ All I did was make a fake website, this guy had to taser a pregnant woman.”Guy is a former Nel-son College student and says it’s probably no surprise if any of his former pupils can’t remember him being a funny guy. It was only when he relocat-ed to Wellington that his comic career be-gan, thanks to Flight of the Conchords. “I just became ob-sessed. I always at-tributed it to Flight of the Concords because that was the year just after their HBO spe-cial became big. Then I started going to the Wellington Comedy Club and I thought it was the coolest thing. No one would have considered me to be very funny, they probably still don’t.”Guy says his first ever routine was “really bad,” although he was completely oblivious

to that at the time. “I got maybe one or two good laughs.” He then entered a competition to become comedian Dai Henwood’s prodigy. He won, which he puts down to the main-

stream public not being very funny. “If you just ask random people to send in vid-eos, most people you get are borderline lu-natics.” His win, though, helped launch his career and actually landed him a role on what is now The Jono Project. He be-gan the first year as a production assistant and now has a regu-lar skit every episode, which can lead him on a wild goose chase with Pakeha Maori politicians or putting on his charm at cat shows.Paul Henry recently jumped ship to TV3,

which brings up Guy’s most awkward mo-ment of his new career. With the reception area under construction, the pair met, on a fire exit staircase, for the first time since

whale-gate. “I didn’t notice him until it was too late. We made eye contact and for a second there I thought ‘oh kill me.’ I walked past him and it was just tense as heck.” But the next meeting Guy made sure he apologised and welcomed him on board TV3. “He had obviously forgotten about it. He’s had bigger fish to fry since then. He was fine with it and I think he said it was all good for the ratings or something like that.”But the relationship has now come full cir-cle and Guy will make an appearance on Paul Henry’s latest show titled Would I lie to you? “I could almost say we’re on speak-ing terms. To have me on the show legiti-mately is pretty exciting.”Guy is currently a writer for Sticky TV, is a regular contributor to Drew and Shannon Live and will feature on TV3’s upcoming sitcom Hounds. Work on another season of The Jono Project will commence this week, although it is undecided whether it will be in the same format as 2011. Guy has been nominated for the Billy T award, the most prestigious accolade in New Zealand comedy. It is given to the top up and coming stand-up comic in the country for the past year. If he wins he will tour with the Comedy Convoy, which makes a stop-off in Nelson. It will be the first time Guy has ever per-formed in his home-town.

TUESDAY 24 January 2012

Nelson’s Kite Festival is not only the longest run-ning kite festival in New Zealand, it is a major event on the international kite flying calendar, says Ted Howard of Rainbow Flight.“We’ve got about 20-30 visiting kite flyers from

around New Zealand. There are international flyers here from the UK, Switzerland and Ger-many hosted by the Nelson Kite Club,” says Ted.As the wind picked up Ted explains that the ground effect units like the giant Fugu fish need to be heavily weighed down. “You can just use a car or a van, we had to get in tractors and trucks

which Nelmac provid-ed.”The kite buggies were on show as well, and having just recently recorded a land-speed record of 134 kmp/h, a standing flyer on one of Peter Lynn’s original power kites demon-strated why. “Oh yeah, they pull a lot of power, he has a 200 pound line on that Excalibur kite and if the wind picks up another two or three knots, he’ll be sliding along the ground,” laughs Peter as he ducks the passing power kite. The Nelson Kite Festi-val celebrated 21 years out on Neale Park, and eventually the weather played its part as the sun came out and the wind filled giant Fugu fish, teddy bears, and octopus. There were hundreds of kites in the air of all shapes and sizes and controllers from two to 80 years of age.

Bridget Budget answers your questions

Q: Christmas is just over, andnow I have school costs and fees coming up. Ifeducation is meant to be free, do I have to pay school fees?

A: Every school has it’s own policy on payment of school donations and fees. We understand that you do not have to pay donations but fees are compulsory, as schools need this income.

Sponsored by New Zealand Lotteries

If you are finding the fees hard to pay, we suggest that you:

Talk to your child’s school about your situation. (This information will be treated confidentially)

Offer to set up small automatic weekly payments over the year

Ask if there is extra funding available for your child, through the school, for fees and extra curricular costs

If your child is studying towards an NZQA qualification, such as NCEA, they are eligible for discounted fees if you have a community service card. With this discount the fees drop from $76.70 to $20.00 per subject. If you have more than one child paying these fees, they only pay $15 per subject. There is some independent funding available at certain times of the year for school uniforms, stationary and extra tuition. If you want help to organise your money matters, set up automatic payments, and find out more about extra funding, call us.

We offer free, confidential advice for everyone.

Learn to swim at riverside pooLLearning to swim and maintaining aquatic confidence is an important life skill, a skill that can save lives. Riverside Pool’s Swim Magic Manager Keta Everett is a parent so understands how important it is for children to be confident swimmers. 90% of drownings last year were due to people that weren’t expecting to be in the water. We are surrounded by water and with the unexpected floods in Nelson in December and the amount of water activities available on our doorstep at our beaches and rivers, it is important that your child is a strong swimmer as you never know when they will need to swim to safety. Make water safety a priority. The team at Swim Magic Swim School is taking enrolments for term 1 now for all ages and abilities, so call them today on 546 3221 or visit www.riversideswimmingpool.co.nz

Founded in 1996 by the McKeown family, Trends Kitchens takes pride in bringing quality kitchens and joinery to South Island homes. Unlike franchise owned companies with a limited product range, Trends Kitchens can provide you a custom made kitchen produced by our own certified tradesmen, in our own factory.

As the demand for this style of designer kitchen service spread around the South Island, so have Trends Kitchens showrooms and branches. Not long after we opened a branch in Nelson, we found people were coming all the way from Blenheim to see us. We were happy to create a site to accommodate our Blenheim clients, and our Renwick showroom was born.

Today, you can walk into a Trends Kitchens show- room in Nelson, Blenheim, Cromwell or Christchurch, and meet with a local designer who can offer you a free measure and quote for the perfect kitchen to accompany your new home or renovation.

When you confirm your purchase with Trends Kitchens, you’re eligible for a no obligation interior design consultation from the team at ColourPlus, to compliment your new kitchen.

Ask our friendly staff for details.

A familiar mountain to climbNelson’s top mountain bikers are hop-ing a home track advantage will help them earn a spot on the podium this weekend.Kieran Bennett and Reuben Oloren-shaw are part of a Nelson-based team founded by Kieran that is aiming to be amongst the frontrunners in the elite class of the New Zealand Nationals. They are the only two Nelson riders competing in the class and will team up with the North Island’s Lawrence Cawte in the Zerode team.Other Nelson riders are competing in

other classes including under 17 and under 19, masters, senior mens and sen-ior womens.Kieran is in hot form this season, cur-rently lying fourth in the National Se-ries which continued in Christchurch last weekend. But the one-off Nationals is the perfect opportunity for Kieran and Reuben to win the championship. Kieran won it when it was last in Nelson in 2007 and Reuben is a former under 17 and under 19 national champion.Kieran says he has been riding the championship course up the Brook Val-ley for the past year and a half and feels comfortable on it but says it will be no

walk in the park. “Sometimes you can be a little too comfortable if you are rid-ing a track you know, but I think we’ll be pretty focused and keen to do well.”Reuben says he is looking forward to racing at home and is hoping for a big crowd to come and cheer them on. “It’s always awesome when people are there and yelling at you. It would be good if we had some locals there cheering for us.”The championships has two parts, the downhill, which is being held on Fri-day, Saturday and Sunday and the cross country which is on Saturday and Sun-day.

TUESDAY 24 January 2012

Tasman Bay still appears to be the hotspot in the top of the south for snapper. The word is you need to be up and about very early in the morn-ing, berley up, get your lines down past the sharks and hopefully into the snapper. Lots of 30-35cm fish are being caught in front of Rabbit Island in about 8-10m of water.Long lining seems to be the most predominant way for catching most of the big snapper out in the middle of Tasman Bay, with Barracuda and squid being the best baits. Large rig are also in the Bay and good catches in set nets have been re-ported. Kahawai are also in abundance with good schools being seen from the main wharf. They have been easy to spot with the birds working flat out above them. Try soft bait or lure from the any spot along the wharf or points on Rocks Rd and you might be pleas-antly surprised with the re-sult.Kenepuru is still quite slow and a lot of patience is re-quired to land fish. Pelorus sound produced the win-ning snapper for Gavin Williams of the DBFC in the Motueka RSA competition held on the weekend. Gutted and gilled the fish tipped the scales down to just under 7kgs. The Boulder Bank is still going off! Large numbers of kingfish are now smashing lures around, so if you ever wanted to land one of these awesome fish, get in your boat and get out there. We have also heard of a few groper

caught in the outer sounds up to 10kgs but the Mafia will put a con-tract out on our heads if we disclose exactly where. Some nice crayfish have been taken over in the Abel Tasman recently with some Dawnbreaker divers leading the way. Once again we have been sworn to secrecy but suffice to say some crays up to 8lb have been taken.Hopefully the wind will start to die down a bit more and looking ahead at the long range forecast for the weekend it looks to be a cracker. The

website that we use is www.metvuw.com which gives up to seven days of forecast of the South Island with predicted rain and wind. Used in conjunction with www.swellmap.com which provides the wind direction, swell heights and tides of many points around the top of the south. Between them they provide a great way to pick the best fishing days.

Radio controlled cars take off on new trackThey were like any ordinary young boys, play-ing with remote controlled cars in the driveway. But as they grew up, so did the toys; and now Alan Simpson and Mark Bidwell are the masters of gas powered buggies that can reach speeds in excess of 70kph.Members of the Nelson Radio Controlled Car Club, the pair have seen the club progress in leaps and bounds in the past three years with the completion of a new radio controlled car specific track at Richmond Park. The club has been going for 25 years and was held at the Brightwater BMX Track previously and using a space near the Nelson Airport be-fore that. But because bikes wreck radio controlled car tracks, they sought their own facility. Currently there are 36 paid per-manent members, although the club usually pulls in around 10 visitors each race day.Club president Alan says his love for motorsport is what got him into driving radio controlled cars, and it’s also an entry into mechanics. “When I was little I always toyed with little ones. As I progressed as a teenager I learnt about places like this where you’d meet a lot of other friends,” he says. “It’s great for the young ones to learn basic mechanics that will help them in the future with their real cars.”Others in the club say it’s an eco-nomic way to be involved in mot-orsport. To be one of the top driv-ers in the country, it would only cost a couple of thousand dollars each year. The first foundations for the new-ly constructed course were laid in 2009 with the entire follow-ing year spent building the track. They had originally hoped for an area at Saxton Field. The track is 340m long, four me-

tres wide and is now one of the top facilities for the off-road radio controlled cars in the country. “It’s fast and it’s flowing, there are big jumps and things. But all the jumps are pretty manageable for all,” says Mark. “We hoped that it would scare people but with-out breaking stuff.”Most of the gas powered cars are pretty “inde-structible” says the pair, after skidding around the track at 60-70kph. On road cars can even reach speeds of 120kph.For more information about joining the club be-fore the season begins in February, visit nrccc.wordpress.com.

What a difference a week can make.Ian Burson set aside his New Zealand Super Saloon Championship disappoint-ment with a spectacular first place drive at Woodford Glen to claim the New Zealand Super Saloon Grand Prix championship on Friday night. He also managed to win the cash prize pool on offer in the Super Saloon Hoop-la just one day later, capping off a stellar weekend for the driver. The 21n driver was the region’s best chance

at the Nelson-hosted New Zealand Cham-pionship a week ago, but a flat tyre ruined his chances on the final day of racing. Local drivers Neville Wood and Mark Carey took 2NZ and 3NZ respectively, but it was Ian and Shane Carey who faired better down south at the Grand Prix fixture, taking first and third. Paddy North was second.Ian says it is great to see the lo-cal drivers doing so well on the national stage, claiming two podium fin-

ishes in both of the two major events on the 2011/12 calendar. “It’s great for little old Nelson. We’d usu-ally only have four or five cars out there racing on a good night, so to have them in the top five of the two big events is huge,” he says.Ian started the feature race at the front of the grid, after qualifying top. He ran from the field and was never caught. Ian admits the New Zealand

Championship result was just part of

speedway life and his weekend perfor-mance has boosted his confidence. “It was such a good weekend. We raced nine races and we won seven of them and got two second places in the other two.”Despite winning two separate events on the weekend, Ian says the G.P has much more prestige to it. “The car was so good, everything just clicked.”This weekend’s racing at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway will be one of the highlights of the season as the Demolition Derby comes to town.

• Four container vessels, two car carriers, ten large fishing vessel movements, kept the port busy over a few days.• Many thanks to the Sea Swim on Thurs-day night who delayed their racing until the car carrier coming in was well past. The pi-lot and I were grateful as the consequences of an incident would be unbearable. Excel-lent management.• Thanks to the Tasman Bay Cruising Club who have managed outside starts and alter-native courses to ensure little or no conflict with shipping.• There are still some speedsters but the HM staff advise people are behaving very well. Many thanks.• The prize this week goes to the launch master who, when his engine broke down, launched his anchor to stop the boat drift-ing into the berths. Unfortunately his an-chor wasn’t attached …

One Mako for anotherJust days after he was named in the training squad for the New Zealand Sevens team, James Lowe was cautioned by the New Zealand Rug-by Union that his focus should be on the New Zealand Under-20 team ahead of the IRB Junior World Championship in South Africa. James pulled out of the training squad, ending his hopes of earning a contract for the 2012 IRB Sevens Circuit. Five players were deemed unavailable, resulting in another five replacements, one being Tasman Mako Shane Christie. James is one of three local players involved with the New Zealand Under-20 training squad, along with Mike Wells and Reuben Northover, although the final squad has yet to be decided. James hopes the NZRU’s decision has increased his chances of making the age-grade side, which will be selected following further training camps.

Trent Luff only needed one point in Richmond to ce-ment first place on the Tasman Skatepark Tour – he took five. The Nelson skateboarder was named winner of the Tasman Skatepark Tour in front of a large Jubilee Park crowd on Saturday. The tour took to all of the skateparks within the Tas-man region including Mapua, Motueka, Brightwater, Takaka and Tapawera. This year’s tour was the first time scooter riders were included, and saw the return of the leader board which saw competitors collect points at each comp.It was the biggest ever turnout for the tour, with or-ganisers saying the major reason behind that was the popular inclusion of scooters, which seem to have taken off in recent months. Leo Calcasola, also of Nelson, won both the overall scooter and BMX competitions.
