2015 BOARD OF DIRECTORS & STAFF

From the Castle Rock Senior Center Board President

2

You may have seen Marquita at the Center popping in and out of the conference

room between her twenty-minute chair massage sessions. She has been

providing massage therapy at the Senior Center to address age-related stiffness and discomfort for about 10 years. She also has a spa-like room in her home for

those who want longer massages lying on a table. Members of CRSC receive

discounted rates. Before being licensed as a massage therapist, Marquita was an

RN for 35 years in California, Hawaii and Colorado. She received her master’s

in nursing while in Hawaii, and moved to Castle Rock in 1995. Her son,

daughter-in-law and 18-month old granddaughter live in Iowa; he takes after

mom’s science aptitude, as he is a chemistry professor at Cornell College.

Marquita sings folk songs, plays the guitar, rollerblades, along with being quite a ballroom dancer, which she says has literally, “swept me off my feet.” She’s a

physical fitness junkie, doing anything active. She truly loves giving massages,

as it allows her to connect with people as she renews them physically and mental-

ly, and, of course, the physical aspects of her role appeal to her.

As you may be aware, Kate Williams is no longer with the CRSC. She is going

on to do bigger and better things. I appreciate her time with us and wish her the best

in the future. In the meantime, Debbi Haynie will assume the role of Interim

Director of the CRSC. The Board and I expect that you will give her your continued

support. The Executive Committee of the Board will be meeting in the next few

weeks to determine our next steps.

As you know, I will not be running again for a Board position. However, I will

continue to be a volunteer driver and assist the CRSC in any way that I can, just as I

do today. In addition to the President position we will also elect a Second

Vice-President and a Secretary. More on these positions, the requirements, and the

November election will be in future newsletters. As you know, this is your Senior

Center, and if you feel you can contribute as a Board member, please do so.

I have always said you can ask me anything. If you have any questions and see

me in the Center, just pull me aside to talk. Or feel free to call my cell at

253-218-8043. My email address is [email protected].

As I know you do, I think the Castle Rock Senior Center is the best Senior

Center in the area. What we offer to our members and the community is tops.

Thanks for reading this. ~ Rich Smoski, President

¨ In response to our members’ suggestions, we have planned a couple of overnight trips occurring the next few months; both of them require registration in June and each registration process is different. Our July 2-night trip to Cripple Creek will have sign-up beginning on Monday, June 8th. In anticipation of a big response, we will hold a lottery drawing for our September 2-night “Bucket List” trip to Grand Lake; you can sign up to be included in the lottery from June 17-22 at 9:30 AM, and the drawing for those who will be on the trip will be at 10:00 AM on the 22nd. Some information about these trips are on pages8-9 and full details are available at the Center or on the website.

¨ Due to a lack of participation, we are suspending our monthly dances. However, our annual Holiday Dance will be Saturday, December 19th.

Why Fill Out Your Hours? · It is important that we have a record of how many volunteer

hours are worked to report to all our funders, including the

government entities and those who administer grants.

· Higher volunteer hours are valuable for future grant submissions

· Debbi can’t be everywhere all the time and she just can’t

remember everyone’s hours worked.

· Your name will be in the newsletter and you’ll be invited to the

volunteer lunch.

What Counts as Volunteer Hours?

Participating in an activity isn’t volunteering, but helping at an activity or event is, whether it’s in the

kitchen, setting up, cleaning up or doing the laundry. In addition, you should count time doing crafts here

or at home that you donate for the Craft Show, supervising sports off-site, helping with mailings, leading or

facilitating an interest group, tending the garden, selling tickets, shelving books, organizing a trip or event,

and working fundraisers in any way. Please turn in your volunteer hours forms no later than the 29th.

4

Membership costs $36 for an entire year, and with a $6 discount per activity for members, it pays for itself as you get involved. You can join by stopping in the Center, filling out a membership form, and paying your $36 dues. There is also

a fill-in membership form on our website: www.castlerockseniorcenter.org. We welcome you!!

“She’s a doll.” “What a breath of fresh air she is.” “Man, that girl can bake.” These are

just some of the comments our members say about our June Volunteer of the Month, Cherie

Bray. Cherie volunteers on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the VOA lunches, and she has also

delivered Meals on Wheels and driven for “specials” as part of our transportation services. She

brings energy, a joyful attitude, and a love of seniors and their stories with her as she leaves her

home office to spend a few hours volunteering. Plus, she is often toting homemade goodies

from her kitchen; people crowd around her like the pied piper, wondering what new recipe she

is trying out on them. Cherie brings such joy to everyone she meets.

She says she is lucky because she now owns her own mortgage business and is able to take

off those hours in the middle of the day to be able to volunteer. She worked for a mortgage

company for years, but eight years ago she started her own business; she not only weathered

the recession, she says she is constantly busy.

Cherie and her husband live in Larkspur. She moved here from California 20 years ago as a

single mom raising three children, leaving behind her extended family. She met her husband 19 years ago and they were

married 7 years later at 7:00 AM at the DMV before they went to work. It’s true; they were stopping to get a marriage license

and saw a sign that the DMV does weddings. “My wedding cost $10 and took 10 minutes,” she laughs. She’s in the midst of

wedding planning today for her daughter who is getting married in California in November. All three of her children, now 24,

25 and 28 years old, live in the Bay area on the west coast. One by one they decided they preferred California and migrated

back there. Cherie goes back every two months so she can see her children, her five year old grandson, her parents, and her

siblings.

Besides her family, cooking and baking are her greatest loves. She remodeled her kitchen and now has three ovens to use;

she loves to cook big dinners and to bake, hardly ever making the same recipe twice. So, how does she stay so slim? It’s

because she plays on five indoor soccer teams all year long; she plays soccer five nights a week. She and her husband also play

golf each Saturday and Sunday that the weather cooperates. They are trying something new this year and have just built a big

vegetable garden which they enclosed to keep out the wildlife. Using her fresh grown produce will be the highlight of Cherie’s

meals this summer. They live with three dogs which they adore.

Thank you for everything, Cherie. We are so glad you googled “volunteering in Castle Rock” and found us!

~ CRSC Staff

You have chosen a great place to get involved and make great friends, and we are so glad to welcome you to the Castle Rock Senior Center. We hope you will get involved, make new friends & volunteer.

While we deal with sunshine all year long in our wonderful state, with the start of summer let’s talk

about our eyes. While we know that we should wear sunglasses, do you know that what kind of

sunglasses you wear is important or that medicine you take could increase your sensitivity to

sunlight? Here are some reminders from the American Academy of Ophthalmology:

· Choose glasses that block 100 percent of UV rays. Use only glasses that block both

UV-A and UV-B rays and that are labeled either “UV400” or “100% UV protection.”

Don’t go by darkness of the lenses, which doesn’t indicate strength of UV protection.

Close-fitting wraparound styles offer the best coverage.

· Wear sunglasses even if it’s cloudy. Damaging UV rays go through clouds and can

burn skin and eyes even when the sky is overcast.

· Put a lid on it. Wear a hat with a wide brim as well as sunglasses and sunscreen.

Studies have shown hats decrease the risk of eye disease related to extended UV exposure.

· Pills and rays don’t always mix. Certain medications may cause increased

sensitivity to sunlight, so take extra precautions if using those treatments (Tetracycline or

Cipro-like drugs, some estrogen pills, and certain anti-inflammatory pain relievers like

ibuprofen and naproxen).

· Watch out for sun, sand and water. When at the beach or in the pool, remember that

rays reflected off sand, water, or pavement can burn your eyes.

Plus, if you haven’t had a recent eye exam with your eyes dilated so the MD can exam the inside, make an appointment with an

ophthalmologist – a medical doctor specializing in the diagnosis, medical and surgical treatment of eye diseases and conditions. This

check is important to do every year - even if you are not experiencing any problems. Yes, enjoy our sunny days, but remember to wear

those shades!

their support. Their ever-changing menu of piz-

This is a new hike for our summer itinerary, in the close-by Castlewood Canyon State Park, and will be led by Phyllis Tumey

who has volunteered at the park for years. This is a 4 mile moderate hike. It gets hot in the canyon so dress appropriately.

What a better way to spend a summer afternoon than at Colorado’s premiere racetrack. Post time is 1:00 PM.

Located on 39 acres, the museum consists of two living history

farms (one from the 1860’s and one from the 1890’s), along with a

1910 ice house, restored school house and a working blacksmith

shop. They allow visitors to experience life in 19th-century

Littleton. Interpretive staff and volunteers dressed in period-

appropriate costumes perform the day-to-day activities in each area.

A new exhibit, “Littleton Goes to War: 1941-1945” shows how

Littleton played a variety of interesting roles during World War II.

We will stop at Merle’s in Littleton for lunch (on your own), before

returning to Castle Rock.

Remembering June 6, 1944 - D-Day on Omaha Beach

The Bedford Boys by Alex Kershaw

On June 6, 1944, thirty-five sons of rural Bedford, Virginia, landed at

Omaha Beach. They were Company A. Nineteen Bedford boys were

killed as they entered the water, never stepping a foot on land.

Twenty-two of the boys from Bedford died that day. This is one of the

many heartbreaking stories of WWII. These young men, the survivors

and those who perished, were the sons, brothers, husbands, boyfriends

and people of Bedford, a town where everyone knew everyone and was

devastated by the loss.

I have donated a copy of their story, The Bedford Boys, in our library. I

have started reading it many times, but have never been able to finish.

You see, I am from Bedford, Virginia; my mother was raised there and I

was born there. My mother was engaged to one of the Bedford boys,

John (JD) Clifton, when he went off to war, but he never returned to her.

As a very young girl I remember visiting J.D.’s family many times, al-

ways being smothered in kisses as if I was family. The author of the

book is related to me in some way. I have known the story of the

Bedford Boys all my life. I respect all they did, and all who died for our

country. I will carry them in my heart forever, and I encourage you to

read their story. — Dee Thompson, Librarian

We now have 2 outdoor courts at Founder’s Park. If you’d like to play, you can pick up a key at the front

desk of the Center (make sure to return it). There are also maps and pickleball information there if it’s your first time. To make it even more convenient, we will

have open round-robin play on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 8:00 AM through the summer. Call Dan

Mitchell at 303-653-1639 for info.

don’t you get a group together this month?

LOCAL ARTIST GOT HER START

IN OUR SENIOR ART CLASSES

Elaine Weaver, who first began painting and

drawing here at the Senior Center in our art

classes (currently the 1st and 3rd Thursdays

each month at 2:00 PM), is having an art show,

and you’re invited. 25 pieces of her work will

be displayed at the Phillip S. Miller Library in

Castle Rock from June 3rd-July 5th. Please go

check them out; the display will be across from

the large meeting room in the south part of the

building. Congratulations to Elaine, and to her

art teacher, Blair Bennink!

The Senior Center entered a well qualified team in the 11th Annual Trivia Night hosted by the Zonta Club of Douglas County in April. The competition was tough and tense, but they kept their cool and answered things only those with generations of knowledge got right. Thanks to you all.
