    CP231:HousingAnInternationalSurvey

    Thiscourseuseshousingasalensforinvestigatingbroadersocialandeconomicprocesses,

    bothintheFirstWorldandindevelopingcounties.Ratherthanfocusingontheformand

    functionofhousing,wewilluseshelterstrugglesandthevariouspolicyresponsesrelatedto

    themasameansofunderstandingotherissuescentraltoplanning,includingpoverty,

    development,urbanization,migration,socialmovements,andstateintervention.Wewillalso

    exploresomeoftheconceptscommonlyusedtodepicthousingissues/problems,suchas

    domesticity,safety,andidentity,andsituatethemwithinbroadernarrativesofrace,gender,

    andnation-building.

    Format:

    Theclasswillmeetonceaweekforthreehours.Theclasswillbeheldinseminarstyle:the

    instructorwillpreparelecturesandpresentationsandallstudentsareexpectedtoengagein

    criticaldiscussionandanalysis.

    Requirements:

    Activeclassparticipation:Studentsareexpectedtoattendclassregularly,toreadassignedmaterials,andparticipateactivelyinclassdiscussions.(40%ofthegrade)

    Analyticalsummaries:Studentsareexpectedtoprepareabriefdiscussionpaper(nomorethan2pages,preferably1page)foreachclasssession.Thesearetobesenttomethrough

    thecoursesiteonb-spacebymidnightthenightbeforeclassmeets.(40%ofthegrade)

    Discussionleadership:Everystudentwillberesponsibleforleadingasmallportion(approximately30minutes)ofoneclass.Thediscussionresponsibilitiesandadditional

    informationaboutwhatisexpectedwillbeassignedinWeek2(January25).(20%ofthe

    grade)
