A CHALLENGE TO LORETO SCHOOLS

In the spirit of Mary Ward, the Loreto Province (Australia and South East Asia) are keen to see their Australian schools meet the following challenge in 2013. They, under the leadership of Sr Margaret Mary Flynn IBVM, have asked each Loreto school in Australia to

“establish a new enterprise/ini a ve to make quality educa on accessible to a community of significant disadvantage.”

This challenge has been the subject of recent discussions with staff, the school Leadership Team and the College Council. I very much look forward to hearing ideas from students and parents also and to the journey we have ahead of us in mee ng this challenge.

VtÜxxÜ axãá Year 12 Families We are currently receiving a lot of interest from employers regarding post Year 12 options. Emails regarding a hairdressing apprenticeship, MSIT information evenings and other post Year 12 apprenticeships (eg Apprentice Chef at Carindale) have been sent to all Year 12 students. I would encourage all girls to check their emails regularly for job and study opportunities for next year.

QTAC UPDATE - Applying late to QTAC

Although 28 September was the national on-time due date, students can continue to apply through the TTT online service for most courses, however, higher processing charges were applicable from 1 October. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply as soon as possible to allow sufficient time for QTAC to assess their application. If the course you are applying for has its major offer round on 13 December the due date to apply and provide supporting documentation is 3 December. For all other courses, applications received after 12 December and supporting documentation received after 17 December may not be assessed in time for the 17 January offer round. Please note, it is not possible to apply for courses with fixed closing dates that have passed. See the QTAC Guide, p. 4, for a comprehensive list of courses with fixed closing dates and visit the QTAC website.

Changing preferences Year 12 students wanting to change preferences or add courses not previously listed on their application, can do so online via QTAC’s Current Applicant online service. The final date to change preferences for the 17 January offer round is 10 January 2013. Please note that it is not possible to add courses with fixed closing dates that have passed. V{xáá axãá 2012 Queensland Girls’ Teams Chess Championships Loreto hosted the state championships on Friday 19th October. Teams from Cairns to the Gold Coast and Fernvale west of Brisbane competed in the Primary School and High School teams’ event. This year saw a record number (73) of competitors representing four High schools and nine Primary Schools competing for a chance to play in the National Teams event. Loreto was represented by Captain Maddie Little, Veronika Koprivcic, Jacqueline West, Alexandra Ponych, Zoe Bozikis and Sophia Ricco. A total of seven rounds were played under Swiss Perfect competition rules. Individual results can be obtained from the Gardiner chess website http://www.gardinerchess.com/ Somerville House won the High School 2012 Queensland Girl’s Chess Teams event and will defend their National Champion team title in Canberra later this year. Reminder - Overdue School Fees

Term 4 School Fees are now overdue and account rendered statements were sent out to all families who have an outstanding balance.

Loreto College’s continuing operational viability is dependent on two main sources of income: government grants from both federal and state jurisdictions and tuition fees from parents.

Ideally, we would like to have all fee accounts paid by the last day of term, which is Friday 16 November for Year 12 and Friday 30 November for Years 8 - 11. If you are experiencing financial difficulties and would like to discuss your situation in confidence, please call me at the College on 3394 9999.

Unless you have made prior arrangements with the finance Department at the College, please ensure these fees are paid as soon as possible. For those families who have been paying by instalments using the Direct Debit system please check that all outstanding fees and charges will be paid by the final date of your Direct Debit Request. WÜtÅt axãá Year 10 Collage Drama Performance On Monday 29 October and Tuesday 30 October, the Year 10 Drama students are performing their public Collage Drama performance. The performance begins at 7.00pm sharp so audience members are requested to be seated by 6.55pm. It is being held on the Mary Ward stage and admission is by gold coin donation. The performers are expected to remain after school and a pizza dinner will be organised for them. They are also reminded to bring along a plate of food for supper. This can be delivered to the Mary Ward canteen. We look forward to seeing a supportive audience for our talented students.

`âá|v axãá CELTIC STORM Production week has already started with girls attending a full day rehearsal yesterday at Villanova. This week we have the Technical Run on Wednesday from 3.30 – 6.00pm. Girls involved in Wednesday sport are excused. The Sound Check is now GOING AHEAD on Thursday from 5.00 – 6.00pm. Dinner will be provided for all students at 6.00pm before the show. If you have any difficulties transporting your daughter to either of these rehearsals please contact Mrs Nielson. On Friday night there is a 6.00 pm call for a 7.00pm show. Students will only be performing in the first half of the show. You may pick your daughter up at 8.30pm or she may stay in the supervised area (back stage/ in the hall) until the end of the concert. LIVE & WIRED Congratulations to the girls who featured in the Live & Wired Festival on Sunday afternoon. It was great to hear your wonderful performances. You should be very proud of your achievements. Thanks to the parents and friends who braved the stifling heat to attend the festival. Round 5 Results Open A were defeated by All Hallows’ 45 – 14 In what was always going to be a tough assignment, Loreto came out strongly with plenty of home support. All Hallows’ were fast, accurate and strong in both offense and defence. Loreto maintained enthusiasm and commitment but could not compete at the same intensity as their opposition. Kristina Sams and Isabelle Mowen had strong games. Open B defeated Our Lady’s College 20 – 19 In a very close match, Loreto always looked the stronger team but could not assert any substantial lead in the match. Lauren Higgins, Sam Vickerman and Lauren Stacey had strong games. Mary-Kate Dennis was accurate in her shooting from the free throw line. With three minutes to go Loreto had 6 point margin and looked set for a win, but Our Lady’s fought strongly to make two quick baskets and take the game to a nail biting finish!

Intermediate A were defeated by Mt St Michael’s 42 – 32 Loreto started slowly and lacked the intensity of previous performances and allowed Mt St Michael’s to assert a strong lead. This ended up being the deciding factor as the remainder of the match saw even scoring. Prue Hempel and Mia Page had strong games. The skill level displayed by both teams throughout the match was excellent.

Intermediate B defeated San Sisto 43 – 19 A strong performance this week against some quality opposition. A blistering return to form for Georgia Johnson, contributing13 points, intercepts and blocked shots. Isobella Scott was also a force to be reckoned with, scoring 12 points and providing great defensive pressure.

Junior A defeated Lourdes Hill College 56 – 20 A very impressive and resounding win for this team. They are turning into a very skillful basketball team. Great rebounding by Adrianna Urbina and Zoe Sever. Mention must also go to Jessica Galpin, Victoria Flores-Rodriguez and Brianna O’Donnell.

Junior B were defeated by St Rita’s 29 – 10 Loreto started well but St Rita’s began to dominate as the match progressed. Loreto must improve communication and marking of players to enable a win next week. There were some drives to the basket but more were needed with back up support for the rebound. LOR(3) The Junior C Loreto team was given a lesson in ball control and good rucking technique by the Junior B team. Waterpolo Under 14 Team – The girls had an exceptional game against AHS. Although losing 6-3 they put up an outstanding fight, with Lauren Michael scoring two goals and Charlotte Grigson scoring one goal. Our defenders were excellent and they shut down the attack for most of the game. I look forward to the game next week. A reminder there will be training on Thursday afternoon with the other teams at Loreto pool. Coach: Oliver Chambers

Under 15 Team – Loreto Warriors had a 9 all draw against St Margaret’s with a lot of new faces in the team. This week our game plan was a bit disjointed. In the first quarter the girls were down 7 – 4. After a quick debrief and calm of the nerves the girls were settled and kept their composure throughout the rest of the quarter. They managed to turn the game around by the 3rd quarter at 7 draw. Leading into the 4th quarter the girls were up by one goal. After some confusing decisions by the refer-ees the girls came out with a lucky draw. Coach: James Duffy Under 18 Team – The team played well considering they were up against the Champion team from 2012. The Loreto Warriors were defeated by The Warriors team. The players from the opposition included some Loreto players as well as their coach. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the game and are learning new strategies of defence and attack each week. ACHPER Sports Breakfast A small group of Year 12 girls attended the ACHPER QLD Annual Women in Sport Breakfast on Thursday 11 October. The girls had an opportunity to listen to an inspiring team of guest speakers share tips for success and stories of courage and determination. The speakers included: Carlee Beattie, Silver medallist in Long Jump at London Paralympics, Sue Hooper, Director of Centre of Excellence at QAS, Tom Sermanni, Head Coach of Australian Women's Soccer Team, Ameliaranne Wells, Queensland Firebirds and Emillee Cherry, UQ Sport Ambassador Scholarship Holder. Congratulations to Bridget Sankey (Year 12) who received a “Commended” award for Football at the Women in Sport Breakfast.

Swim Squad There is Swim Squad training on a Tuesday and Thursday morning from 6.45am to 8.00am at Loreto pool. This is in preparation for the 2013 season. VÉÇzÜtàâÄtà|ÉÇá Congratulations to Sarah Vaux who completed the Breast Cancer Triathalon at Runaway Bay on Sunday 21st October. The triathalon raised over $1000000, which was donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation. Sarah came 9th (all ages) out of over 120 competitors, which is an excellent achievement.
