Executive Summary

G.C.E.(O.L.)Examination-thefirstmilestoneinschooleducation,isheldattheendofGrade11asasubjectexamination.ThisexaminationisbasedonthesyllabiofGrades10and11.Applicants have the option of sitting 9 subjectswhich comprise 6 compulsory subjects and 3subjectsfromthethreesubjectgroupsselectingonefromeachgroup.

Theachievementstandardsatthisexaminationdemonstrateanincreaseinthepercentageofschoolcandidates(firstattempt)whohavequalifiedtostudyintheG.C.E.(A.L.).Thepercentageof thosewhoqualified tostudy in the (A.L.) in2007was51.47%and ithas risen to60.8%in2011.

Asthepercentageofstudentswhoqualifiedfor(A.L.)increasedgraduallyovertheyearsthepercentageoffailuresinallsubjectshadgraduallydecreased.In2007thepercentageofstudents(firstattempt)whofailedinallsubjectswas7.63%andin2011ithascomedownto4.74%.

Itisalsoseenthatthepasspercentageofthemainsubjectshasincreasedin2011.AccordinglythepasspercentageofSinhalaLanguage&Literaturewhichwas81.11%in2007hasincreasedto 84.36% in 2011.ButwhereTamilLanguage&Literature is concerned the pass percentagewhichwas80.16%in2007hasdecreasedto78.2%in2011.ObtainingapassformathematicsiscrucialfortheapplicantswhosittheG.C.E.(O.L.)ExaminationwiththeintentionofqualifyingforG.C.E.(A.L.).ThepasspercentageofMathematicstoohasundergonechangeovertheyears.Itwas33.6%in1994,itbecame42.6%in2006andin2007itincreasedto48.55%(schoolcandidates-firstattempt.)andin2011itis55.33%.WhenthemannerinwhichthecandidateshavescoredmarksforMathematicsisstudied,itisseenthat0.57%ofthemhadnotbeenabletoscoreasinglemarkformathematicsin2011.ThepasspercentageofSciencewas47.41%in2008andin2011ithasincreasedto62.4%.TheperformanceattheEnglishLanguagealsoshowsanupwardtrend.ThepasspercentageofEnglishLanguagewas30.6%in2008andithasrisento44.57%in2011.

WhenZonalwiseperformancesare takenintoaccount, it isseen thatKilinochchizoneshowsthelowestperformancewith35.39%qualifyingfor(A.L.)whileBaticaloaCentralhasthehighestwith80.08%qualifyingfor(A.L.).Wilgamuwazonewhichshowedthelowestperformancein2007with just23.12%qualifyingfor(A.L.) hasgradually improvedandthepercentageofstudentswhoqualifiedforG.C.E.(A.L.)in2011is45.31%.

SchoolperformanceindiceshavebeencalculatedbyanalyzingresultsusingtheStanineScale.Theschoolperformanceindicesforallschoolsintheislandhavebeencalculated.

It isalsoof importance tonote thatafter thepresentationofanalysisofG.C.E. (O.L.)Examinationresults in2007,variousremedialmeasureswereintroducedtosubjectsaswellaszoneswhichexhibitedpoorperformance.Asaresulttheperformanceatsubjectslikemathematicshasimprovedandsomeofthezonesthatshowedpoorperformancehavebeenabletoimprovetheirperformancein2011.

Theinformation,containedinthisbook,Ibelieve,willbeof immenseusetoall thosewhoareinvolvedintheprocessofeducationandthatitwouldencouragethemtoreachforhighergoals.
