Synthetic sizing system –

new performance with successful chemistry

Synthetic sizing agents influence the

essential properties of the finished prod-

ucts in paper and board production.

Their application results in optimized

paper performance with respect to

absorption of liquids, writing and

printability, or in the case of newsprint

improved dimension stability.

Beside the pure performance of your

products, sizing application influences

and improves the runnability of your

machine. A well balanced sizing system

will reduce the demand of other

chemicals like OBAs or coating colour

in your process.

With our broad product range of sizing

agents, we help you improve your pro-

cess.

Basoplast® – surface sizing:

» Anionic, amphoteric or cationic

polymer dispersions based on acrylic

copolymers for improved surface

properties.

Basoplast® – internal sizing:

» Amphoteric to cationic fatty alkyl

diketene based dispersions and

acrylic copolymer dispersions for

application in the wet end.

» Highly reactive, 100% pure alkenyl

succinic anhydride containing

emulsifiers for wet-end sizing.

Basoplast® – polymeric sizing agents

Getting the sharpest picture with

Basoplast®

Basoplast® stands as brandname for

surface sizing and improvement of all

paper grades.

» Basoplast® polymeric sizing agents

are the most commonly used surface-

sizing agents for a wide range of

paper and board grades worldwide.

» Basoplast® polymeric sizing agents

are available worldwide from regional

production facilities.

» Basoplast® polymeric sizing agents

ensure a controlled and economic

sizing efficiency and provide excellent

printing properties in off-set and digi-

tal printing, also in combination with

internal sizing.

Basoplast® – AKD sizing agents

As one of the leading suppliers of

chemicals to the paper industry, we

never stop in our efforts to develop and

improve our products and processes.

One example is our newly designed,

solvent-free and state-of-the-art

production process for AKD. It shows

BASF’s commitment to supply our

customers with the best available

products.

Sizing systems add value to your

paper.

The technical service given by BASF is

focused on finding and implementing

system solutions to create value on

your machine.

» Basoplast® AKD sizing agents can

be used for virtually all internal sized

paper & board grades.

» Basoplast® AKD sizing agents are

based on a solvent free AKD wax

with high purity.

» Basoplast® AKD sizing agents

include a variation of standard up to

polymer-enhanced dispersions.

» Basoplast® AKD sizing agents are

available worldwide from regional

production facilities.

» Basoplast® AKD sizing agents

based on pure C18 fatty acids are

designed for liquid packaging board

or high melting point requiring pro-

cesses.

Examples for new applications for

sizing:

» Polymer-enhanced AKD dispersions

improve printability of 100% DIP

newsprint as well as runnability in the

pressrooms.

» Polymer-modified AKD dispersions,

applied in the surface, show enhan-

ced surface sizing efficiency along

with reduced stock sizing demand.

» Improved cost performance through

the reduction of transportation

costs.

» BASF’s new production process for

AKD ensures highest quality; there-

fore it is especially suitable for all

types of food and beverage pack-

aging papers.

The combination of this AKD with our

approved polymeric sizing is also an

option particularly where high

performance is required.

» BASF’s C 18 AKD is approved

regarding milk and fruit acid

resistance.

Basoplast® – ASA sizing agents

Our devotion to developing products for

paper production makes us strive to

offer customers the best ways to meet

their requirements. Basoplast® ASA

completes our portfolio of synthetic

sizing agents, allowing us to recom-

mend the most effective wet-end size.

Basoplast® ASA has a positive effect

on runnability.

The immediate and easily controlled

sizing effect of Basoplast® ASA impro-

ves machine runnability, so helping

increase the rate of production. This

makes Basoplast® ASA an economic

alternative to AKD and rosin size.

» Basoplast® ASA sizes can be used

for all grades of paper and provide

the best sizing solution for gypsum

plasterboard.

» Basoplast® ASA sizes contain

100% highly reactive material, but

their shelf life is unlimited.

» Basoplast® ASA sizes are most

effective in combination with cationic

potato starch, but can also be used

together with synthetic polymers.

» Basoplast® ASA sizing agents are

available in two qualities: with pure

C18 alkenyl chain or a blend of

C16/C18 alkenyl chains.

Owing to its reactive nature, ASA must

be added at the paper mill, together

with auxiliaries, in order to form an

aqueous emulsion before the stock is

applied to the fourdrinier machine. The

use of proven emulsification technology

and BASF’s experience in construction

of metering equipment guarantees you

highly qualified technical service,

allowing optimum results with

Basoplast® ASA.

Our expertise is your success.

Technical assistance is our business

BASF understands research and

development is a major part of

sustainable value creation. The

analysis of the performance of our

products and the analysis of your

system are very important parame-

ters for optimization. The goal is

to find and develop easy to handle

methods for a sharp analysis.

DIP-based furnish for newsprint is

becoming more and more important.

As a consequence, problems related

to printing quality and runnability in the

pressrooms, are more frequent.

IGT wet-pick-strength is one of the best

methods for simulation of the offset

printing process.

Using the polymer supported AKD

products (e.g. Basoplast® 860 D)

the wet-pick-strength of a DIP-based

newsprint can be improved significantly.

AKD and ASA retention is a very

important parameter in the adjustment

of paper quality and the optimisation

of sizing performance. Therefore an

on-site method for measuring AKD

retention has been developed.

The AKD retention measurements,

combined with years of experience

are used to select the very best sizing

concept for your machine.
