A Message From Our IWGA President

John Noh, PresidentIdaho Wool Growers Association

2020 has been an interesting ride to say the least. In January and February there was industry wide excitement about what looked to be a very solid year. Lambing for most was going well, wool prices, while lower than last year were ok. and feeder lambs were selling in the $1.70 range with early California Springers over $2.00. Colorado feedlot inventories were very low, packers were current and weights were steady.

Covid-19 has changed everything. Wool sales stopped, food service shut down, demand for our product crashed. As I write this, there is a glimmer of hope. Restaurants are operating again, wool sales have been increasing and demand has improved. The industry does not have a glut of overweight lambs on feed in Colorado. The two major processors should be commended for ramping up their harvest over the past months. While much of this harvest has been put in the freezers, it is not backed up in the

feedlots which would normally create an over-fat undesirable product.

I think the issues we face now are getting the demand back to pre-Covid levels. This means that consumers need to feel confident and safe about traveling, eating out and spending money. We will need to deal with all the inventory that has been frozen over the last sixty days. Lastly, the feeding segment of the sheep industry has taken a tre-mendous hit throughout this pandemic. Many feeders are going to be very wary about taking on much risk this fall, meaning many producers may be asked to custom feed all or a portion of their lambs this Fall.

Through tremendous efforts by many of you, the sheep industry was included to some degree in many of the government assistance programs designed to mitigate Covid-19 related losses. As of this writing, there is still some argument as to whether H2A employ-ees qualify for the Payroll Protection Forgiveness Program. The CFAP and CCC programs administered through local FSA offices offer some assistance for lamb and both 2019 and 2020 unsold wool. The Wool LRP/LDP programs are also available for unsold wool. If you haven’t already, please contact your local FSA office. Many are still working remotely, so you will need to call or email.

ASI shared an email last week that there will most likely be another round of direct pay-ment to livestock producers. Since we were included in the first round, we should not have to lobby to be included. We must, however, passionately express to policy makers the importance of meaningful dollars being allocated to our industry. I understand and agree that we were woefully underfunded in the current programs. Write letters, make phone calls, tell your story.

Those of you that purchased lamb risk insurance before it was discontinued, USDA an-nounced that those policies will be honored when they reach their ending date. Since USDA cannot collect the normal data, they will use the reported comprehensive price to calculate ending values. A big thanks to Henry Etcheverry, Ron Cole and Burdell Johnson for their efforts to alleviate this problem.

Please enjoy your time at the sale today and thank the tremendous seedstock producers who have graciously consigned their quality rams to our sale.

Steady on, John

Jack (left) pictured here with his family (left to right)Libby, Emily, Ross and Lori

The Idaho Wool Growers is proud to offer some of the best rams in the Western Region with this sale including yearling Suffolk, Rambouillet, Rambouillet Cross-breds, and Suffolk Crossbreds. Consignors will also have opportunity to bid on Ram Lambs in these same breeds.

We hope you all enjoy the many sheep activities this year starting with the BBQ Friday evening. We hope you also plan on viewing the sheep wagons, wool dis-plays, and craft items for sale. Friday evening is also a great time for consignors and producers to interact. Buyers can preview the sale consignments and con-signors can explain details about their rams.

The barbecue is sponsored by Superior Farms and catered by Julie Noh. Thank you, Julie and Superior Farms!! Please also note, that the Idaho Wool Growers has been blessed with an energetic and bright lady serving as our new director. If you have not gotten the chance to meet Naomi Gordon yet, take time to intro-duce yourself and get to know her. She wants to hear from all sheep producers, those with 1 or 1,000 head.

The IWGA Ram Sale Committee also wants to remind all sheep breeders and producers that this sale is a major fund raiser for the association and all proceeds from the sale help keep your association operating. We have an ALMOST 100-year history providing quality breeding stock to sheep producers and is the only state-wide sheep sale in Idaho. Con-signors will offer single pens, and pens of 2, 3, 4 and 5. This will be a great way for any sheep producer to build their herds with genetics for the ever-changing sheep industry.

Thank you for attending the sale!!

WHY COLUMBIAS?Columbias work well as both a terminal sire or a mother breed. Columbias have long been used nationwide to improve a majority of the flocks and breeds. With Columbia, you will find those characteristics that you desire. Columbias have

been used to bring these traits to many of nation’s today flocks:

•Size, scale, dimension•Maternal traits

•Milk production-heavy milkers•Pounds of wool per ewe

•Pounds of lamb•Carcass

•Larger Rib Eye

Columbias are the leader in the commercial industry because their superior maternal traits,

heavy dense fleeces, feed efficiency, and fast growing vibrant lambs. They possess carcass

qualities that allow them to be highly competitive with the market lamb breeds. For more than 100 years, our producers have experienced higher profits from their sheep with more

pounds of wool and lamb plus less labor costs. From east to west, Columbias can work in any

flock to improve the bottom line for the producer. Learn how Columbias can make more profit

Rules & Terms of Sale

Terms- Terms of this sale are cash.

Payment- All checks in payment of rams and ewes in the sale are to be drawn payable to the Idaho Wool Growers Association. All purchases are to be settled for on the day purchased at the office on the grounds. This also applies to any private sales made outside the auction ring.

Bid Disputes- Misunderstanding or dispute regarding bids will be settled by the auctioneer. If there is doubt as to the bid, the auctioneer will cancel all bids made and re-open the sale.

Accepted Bids- None but bona-fide bids will be accepted. Sellers have the right to bid once on each lot offered. Such bids must be handed in writing to the auctioneer before the lot enters the ring.

Price- In bidding on pens, bids will be based on price per head.

Breeding Ability- All sheep sold are guaranteed by the consignor to be breeders. Any animal deemed by the buyer as a non-breeder shall be reported to the seller no more than 90 days following purchase. The seller has the right to have returned any animal claimed by the buyer to be a non-breeder. In the case where the seller cannot prove the animal to be a breeder, the seller is to refund the purchase price.

Proof of Registration- All singles must be registered. Sellers are to deliver recorded pedigrees for all reg-istered sheep to the office prior to sale. Buyers may request pedigrees of range rams sold as “eligible for registration”. Upon request, the seller will deliver pedigrees to the buyer at the buyer’s expense.

Release- Sheep may be released for shipment before the close of the sale only with permission of the sale barn pen manager.

Fees- The entry fee for livestock consigned to the range ram sale is $25 per head or $125.00 for a pen of 5, $100.00 for a pen of 4, $75.00 for a pen of 3, or $50.00 for a pen of 2 and $25.00 for a pen of 1. Please include these fees with your entry form. These are nonrefundable but will be included in the final fee calculation. The selling fee for livestock consigned to the range ram sale is the entry fee or 10% of the sale price, whichever is greater.

No Sale- If a consignor’s sheep go through the sale ring and, for whatever reason, do not sell, then the consignor will still be charged the entry fee or 10% of the floored price, whichever is greater, for those sheep not sold. If a consignor to the Idaho State Ram Sale sells any of his stock on the grounds by private treaty (i.e... outside of the sale ring), said consignor is to submit to the Idaho Wool Growers Association a fee equivalent to the selling fee.

IWGA Membership- All Consignors, including individual family members who have consigned sheep, will need to be members of the Idaho Wool Growers Association. Membership fees (minimum $40.00) are $.40/hd of all sheep owned of the age 1 year or older or $.04/lb. of wool sold. If the membership has not already been paid, the membership fee must be submitted with the entry fee for participation in the ram sale to be considered.

Ownership- All sheep on the grounds are held at the consignor’s risk until sold. Ownership changes when the sheep are sold in the ring. Sheep are held at the purchaser’s risk from that time on.

Buyer/Seller Disputes- The Idaho Wool Growers Association shall not be held liable for any damages, either real or perceived, resulting from defection, disease or misrepresentation of rams and ewes pur-chased at this sale. The association, however, will attempt to resolve any such claims between buyer and seller if said claims are submitted to the association office within 30 days of the date of the sale. In dis-puted cases between buyer and seller, the President of the Idaho Wool Growers Association is authorized to appoint a committee of three persons and the decision of this committee shall be binding upon both the seller and buyer. If the consignor is at fault, the consignor will pay the expense of adjustment. If the committee disallows the buyers claim, the buyer will pay the expense of the investigation.

Misrepresentation and Adjustments- No consignor may willfully misrepresent stock or refuse to be gov-erned by the rules of the association in making adjustments.

Integrity- The Idaho Wool Growers Association will make every effort to conduct the sale in an honorable manner, to allow no false practices or false bidding, to protect both buyer and seller in every reasonable way. Under no circumstances does the Idaho Wool Growers Association assume any liability whatsoever.

Enforcement- Violation of rules will result in dismissal from the sale and barring from future sales.

Authorization- Consignors, in making entry, agree to comply with the above provisions. Rams and ewes consigned are subject to release on authorization of the Ram Sale Committee whether sold or unsold.

Promotional Ewe LambEvery year a ewe lamb is donated to our sale for the express purposes of raising money to promote our sheep industry here in Idaho. You can choose to bid on the lamb to take home yourself, or you have the opportunity to “bid” your donation that will be added onto your purchases at the end of the sale. The donations collected will be used to bolster public perception of sheep in our great state. It’s a fun tradi-tion that dates back to 1921 when the sale first started.

This year’s lamb is a Dorset/Targhee Cross Breed that was raised by friends Carol Finney and Mel Wetzstein (pictured below.) Both breeds are generally known for generating quality, dual-purposed offspring that produce both excellent, depend-able wool and tasty meat. So feel free to bid high as you will be delighted to bring home this year’s ewe lamb!

Carol (below on the right) is the owner of Finney Land & Livestock. Mel (pictured below with her granddaughter) is the owner of M.J. Valley Lambs. They both hail from Buhl, Idaho.
