to spend ample time outdoors

before the arrival of harsh winter

weather drives them back

indoors. The following are a

handful of activities that are tai-

lor-made for fall.

Raking leaves: While raking

leaves might not jump out at you

as a great way to spend a nice fall

afternoon, families often find rak-ing leaves together soon turns into

a fun day in the yard. Build leaf

piles and let the kids jump in, and

then do it again.

When raking, encourage

kids to collect some colorful leaves

and set them aside. Once the rak-

ing is done, you can then enjoy

making some homemade crafts

with the leaves you and your

youngsters just collected.

Apple picking: Perhaps no activ-

ity is more synonymous with fallthan apple picking. Many apple

orchards encourage customers to

come by and pick their own apples

in the fall. Once your family and

you have scoured the orchard for

the perfect apples, relax with a cup

of warm apple cider before return-

ing home to make some home-

made apple sauce and, of course, a

delicious apple pie.

Hayride: Hayrides are another

fall tradition, and many farms offerrelaxing hayrides throughout fall.

Younger children who may tire if

asked to patrol an apple orchard

for apples might find a hayride is

more their speed. Some farms may

even allow customers to walk the

grounds and visit the animals on

What do these years

have in common:

Not sure? Let me ask the ques-

tion a different way. What did

these years in the stock market

do to your retirement portfolio?

the markets crashed, corrected

or burned? Did you view this as

a momentary problem that

time would heal? Did you view

these years as buying opportu-

nities since the prices were on

sale by 10 percent off or more?

Did you take advantage of the

opportunity and invest heavily,

counted retirement accounts?

For some investors,

crashes, corrections and

depressions are merely a great

time to buy and invest more

for gains yet to come. For oth-

ers, these negative market

events cause stress, tension,

anxiety and high blood pres-

sure. The determining factors

of either an opportunity or

basics of baseball in a clinic for-

ways to help an

elderly loved one

do all they can to maintain

health, one of the best ways to

improve both the physical and

mental health of a senior citi-

zen is meditation. We know

that meditation can reduce

stress and help us relax, but

recent studies have shown that

meditation can also relieve

pain, reduce the probability of

heart disease and

improve creativity.

Here are some other

benefits of medita-

tion:

1. The deep breath-

ing exercises central

to any program of

meditation encour-

age oxygen enrich-

ment to the blood.

Senior citizens who

suffer from digestion

problems often see

immediate relief because the

oxygenation of their digestive

functions is empowered

through meditation. This extra

oxygen boosts the immune sys-

tem, heals the lungs and

improves circulation.

2. Meditation also causes

increased alertness and the

ability to interact with others

and surroundings. The in-

creased oxygen in the blood-

stream of the elderly user of

meditation will cause brain

functions to improve.

3. Because both the mind and

the body become more relaxed,

the mental and physical health

of the individual is improved

drastically. Seniors who suffer

from depression can benefit

from meditation. During medi-

tation, feelings of happiness are

created in the mind, which

increases daily happiness and

satisfaction.

4. Meditation improves physi-

cal energy, making the senior

years just as rewarding as other

life phases. Meditation is also

easy to learn and requires no

certain religious affiliations.

The fact that meditation is

flexible and easy to do makes it

a great choice for everyone,

quickly enriching the lives of

seniors.

5. A study, published in the

Journal of Brain, Behavior &

Immunity, shows that eight

weeks of training in mindful-

ness meditation is linked with

decreased loneliness. Aside

from alleviating loneliness,

mindfulness meditation has

also been shown in past

research to have positive

effects on the brain linked

with brain changes that may

even have effects against

mental illness.

The break-even point

in your business is

where all direct and

indirect costs have been met.

You are neither making nor

losing any money. The break-

even point can be measured

in number of units sold, dol-

lars of total sales or possibly

hours billed out.

To calculate your

breakeven point, you must

first determine your direct

(variable) and your indirect

(fixed) costs. Direct costs

vary with the number of

units sold. For every unit you

sell, you must buy another set

of the components. Your

indirect costs dont normally

vary for a given volume of

business. Your gross profit per

unit (sales less direct costs,

known as the contribution

margin) goes toward paying

for these indirect costs. Once

the indirect costs have been

paid, you have reached the

break-even point. The gross

profit from every unit sold

over the break-even point

goes to the bottom line as

profit.

To simplify this exam-

ple, lets assume that you run

a food stand that sells only

hamburgers. For every burger

you sell, you need to buy

meat, a bun, trimmings, and

a paper serving plate.

Assume your burger sells for

$6 and the total of the direct

costs is $2 per burger. This

means that you have a con-

tribution margin of $4 to go

toward fixed costs.

Your fixed costs include

such things as rent, insur-

ance, advertising, taxes and

so on. Within limits, selling a

few more burgers will not

cause these expenses to

increase. If your total fixed

costs are $100 a day, your

breakeven point is 25 burgers

or $150. Once you pass 25

burgers, $4 from each addi-

tional sale goes to your bot-

tom line as profit.

hold to the belief that the mar-

kets comprising the holdings in

your retirement portfolio may

go into negative territory at any

time, exacerbated by the

monthly withdrawals that must

continue to support you and

your spouse for the rest of your

life, please invest a few more

moments of your time reading

to the end, for your own eco-

nomic benefit.

Is your retirement portfo-

lio crash proof? In other words,

will your income stream be

uninterrupted if the markets

fell 40 percent in a year? Would

your level of income be free

from decline? Would you be

able to access your portfolio in

the event of an emergency to

grab a large sum of capital on

demand? If you or your spouse

entered a nursing facility,

would your income be satisfac-

tory to handle the additional

costs while still being able to

maintain your household? Is

your portfolio designed to pay

you a stable income for the rest

of your life, even if the IRS says

your IRA must be depleted as

you age? What about a legacy

for your children? Will they

receive anything from your

estate? Is it guaranteed?

Though the federal estate

tax bracket has been fixed at

$5,250,000, NJ continues to

hover at $675,000. This means

if your estate, counting your

home, exceeds that amount,

taxes will have to be paid! Are

you prepared to take care of this

mandated reduction in your

bequest to them?

Here are the nine points I am

making:

1. I insist on a guaranteed rising

income for the rest of my life,

and my wifes, when we stop

working.

2. I demand long-term care

portfolio protection to insure

the integrity of my assets and

income.

3. I require that my portfolio be

designed with the least amount

of governmental intrusion

(taxes) as possible.

4. I desire to leave the greatest

sum we possibly can to our

favorite charities (our four

children) when my wife and I

are gone.

5. I must have protection from

stock and bond market losses,

so that my income and insur-

ance programs put in place will

not be compromised when the

negative market years occur.

(And occur they will).

6. I mandate that during rising

markets my portfolio will be

able to capture the high val-

ues to reset my lifetime income

stream, which will never

retreat, upward.

7. I need the flexibility and liq-

uidity to make adjustments as

necessary when situations arise.

8. As part of my retirement

plan, I have documents in

place that designate my execu-

tors, trustees, power of attorney,

health proxy and living will

advocate.

9. My plan must include funds

for entertainment value that

are disposable and discretionary

(e.g. Vegas, travel and gift-

ing).

Home may be where

the heart is, but it

also can be an unsafe

place if safety hazards are not

recognized and addressed.

The Consumer Product

Safety Commission says that

each year 33.1 million people

are injured by consumer prod-

ucts and other dangers in the

home. Here is a collection of

home hazards that can com-

promise safety in and around

the house.

Flooding: Super storms have

been wreaking havoc on

many areas of the country.

Flooding is a common side

effect of strong rains and high

tides, and the aftermath of a

flood can turn a home from

a haven into a hazard.

Microorganisms in flood

waters may contaminate

drinking water, and wet walls

and floors can present a

breeding ground for insects,

pests and microorganisms like

mold and mildew. The

National Safety Council says

microorganisms can penetrate

into soaked, porous materials

and later be released into the

air and inhaled. Flooding also

may lead to weakened or rot-

ted floorboards.

Magnets: Very small magnets

are popular in jewelry, toys,

building sets, and more. The

number of products with strong

magnets has increased, which

may pose significant safety

threats to children. The CPSC

says that magnets have con-

tributed to one death and 86

injuries since 2005. Eight mil-

lion magnetic toys have been

recalled. Magnets that are swal-

lowed may not pass easily

through the digestive system.

Oftentimes, they can get

trapped in place when attract-

ed to one another or a piece of

metal and pinch or twist the

intestines, potentially causing

blockage or infection.

Furniture tip-over: Large

furniture and electronics that

are not balanced well or

anchored to a wall can be

pulled over by children and

even adults. Small children

can be seriously injured by

tip-over accidents. Tip-overs

cause an estimated 22 deaths

per year.

Pools and spas: While drown-

ing in pools and spas is a lead-

ing cause of death, there are

other dangers lurking. Faulty

underwater lighting, appli-

ances that fall into the water

and aging wiring can result in

electrocution. The CPSC

notes that suction from a pool

or spa drain is also potentially

hazardous. The majority of

suction accidents involved

children, but suction can hold

an adult underwater. There

have even been cases of peo-

ple being disemboweled from

pool drains. Installing a safety

vacuum release system that

turns off the pool pump when

a drain is blocked can prevent

entrapment.

Fire: Home fire injuries are

highest among seniors and

children under the age of five.

In addition, home fires are a

leading cause of emergency

room visits. Smoke alarms on

every level of the house can

alert to danger, but ensuring

candles are extinguished and

electrical wiring is up to date

and making sure space heaters

and other appliances are not

left unattended can help pre-

vent fires.

Garage doors: The CPSC

says an average of 20,000 peo-

ple each year are treated in

the hospital for injuries

caused by garage doors. From

fingers and toes getting

trapped to heavy doors falling

on children and adults, garage

doors can cause serious injury.

Falls: Falls are a leading cause

of injury to people of all ages.

Falls down stairs, from win-

dows and off of ladders are

just some of the reasons peo-

ple visit emergency rooms

each and every day. Ensuring

there are no tripping hazards

around the house and also

having sturdy handles and

guardrails present for use by

the elderly can help prevent

some falls.

There are many dangers

lurking around the house, and

awareness of such hazards can

help prevent serious injury.

In a large saucepan, cook

the bacon over moderately

low heat until crisp, 10 min-

utes. Transfer the bacon topaper towels to drain. Pour off

2 tablespoons of the bacon fat

and reserve. Add

the onion and

celery to the pan.

Cook over low

heat until soft-

ened, 12 min-

utes.

Meanwhile,

in a food proces-

sor, puree 1 cup

of the corn with

1 cup of the milk.Add the corn

puree to the

saucepan along with the

remaining 2 cups each of corn

and milk and the potatoes.

Simmer over low heat until

the potatoes are tender, about

20 minutes. Stir in the cream,

chives and the reserved

bacon. Season with salt, pep-

per and Tabasco and keep

warm.In a large skillet, heat the

reserved 2 tablespoons of

bacon fat until shimmering.

Add the scallops, season with

salt and pepper and cook over

moderately high heat until

browned, about 1 1/2 minutes

per side. Ladle the soup into

bowls; top with the scallops

and chives and serve.

Do you have any strate-

gic alliances withaffiliated businesses?

These are businesses that are

complimentary to your busi-

ness. Examples of complimen-

tary businesses include plumb-

ing, electrical, carpentry,

HVAC, landscaping, win-

dows, furniture, doors, paving

and concrete. Each of these

companies comes across two

to five sales leads every

month. If not, they are notnetworking or asking the

questions. You should have a

list of at least 25 other compa-

nies that you refer business to,

and that refer business back to
