    When it comes to cos-

    metic surgery, Dr.

    Jeffrey Wise knows

that less is more. This facial plas-tic and reconstructive surgeon is

    using emerging technologies that

are less invasive, less risky, and

    less extreme, while giving patients

    more options with more natural-

    looking results.

Gone are the days of the

    one-size-fits-all facelift, said Dr.

    Wise, who has dedicated his

    career exclusively to enhancing

the face, head and neck, having

performed over 4,000 faceliftingand eyelid procedures. When it

    comes to facial rejuvenation,

were now using a combination of

    incremental procedures that offer

    quick recoveries and long-lasting

    solutions.

    This multi-faceted approach

requires Dr. Wise to tackle the

    three components of aging: sag-

ging tissue, volume loss, and loss

    of skin quality and elasticity.

Using the right combination ofnon-invasive and minimally inva-

    sive treatments, he can create

    beautiful subtle changes that help

    maintain harmony in the face.

The facelift is still the most effec-

tive solution for sagging tissue. Dr.

    Wise will typically combine this

with fat transfer, using the bodys

own fat cells to add volume and

    eliminate fine lines and wrinkles.

He finishes with a laser rejuvena-

tion procedure to stimulate colla-gen production and improve skin

    elasticity.

    Based on Dr. Wises vast

    knowledge and experience, the

    Wise Signature Lift was developed

    to address facial rejuvenation with

a global approach. The Wise Lift

    is comprised of multiple proce-

    dures including facelifting, fat

    transfer, fractionated CO2 laser

    skin resurfacing, and upper and

lower eyelid procedures (ble-pharoplasty). When performed

    concurrently, these procedures

target the primary symptoms of an

aging face: loose skin, fine lines

    and wrinkles, brown spots, fatty

deposits and loose skin around the

eyes, and lost volume in the

    cheeks and folds.

    The ultimate in facial rejuve-

nation, the Wise Signature Lift is

    a multi-faceted comprehensive

technique developed and per-formed exclusively for the

patients of Dr. Wise. He has found

    that combining these procedures

is an ideal and convenient way to

    achieve patients aesthetic goals.

    Individuals have discovered that

    combining procedures into a sin-

    gle surgery allows for minimal

    downtime and unparalleled

    results.

Since the eyes are often the

first to show signs of aging, women and men in their 30s and

    40s are proactively undergoing an

eyelid procedure to stave off the

    aging process. Frequently, people

are coming for eyelid surgery long

before they would ever consider a

face lift, says Dr. Wise, who adds

that when done properly, an eye-

    lid procedure will last decades.

    Dr. Wise practices in Wayne

    and has performed thousands of

facelifts and eyelid procedures. Heis also a double board-certified

    facial plastic and reconstructive

    surgeon who underwent his train-

ing at some of our countrys finest

    institutions, specifically Yale,

    Cornell and the University of

    Pennsylvania . He shares his

    Presidential elections are

    over! Obamacare is here

to stay! Fiscal Cliff is on

    the horizon! Recession rear-

ing! Inflation looming!Anemic interest rates linger!

    Lousy stock markets persist!

    Federal deficit increasing!

    Short sales and foreclosures

    mounting! Massive unemploy-

    ment continues! Hurricane

    Sandy aftermath: no power, no

internet, no TV, no phones, no

heat, no school no gas, no

    patience, no paychecks, no

    fun, no kiddingwow! This

    makes me dizzy.

    Hurricane winds, earth-

quakes, fallen trees and otherbad news got you down? Feel

like you cant get off this train

    or merry-go-round ride? Do

    you feel like throwing up?

    These last few weeks have

    been rather grating on the

    nerves. Even without power or

a working cable line for more

    than 12 days, the headlines

    listed above keep reverberating

in my head. Over the course of

    Sandy, my smartphone was my

only link to the outside world.

The Charnet world was tem-porarily one of Monopoly,

    Scrabble, Banana-Grams and

    Gin Rummy, which replaced

    the normal activities of inter-

    active video gaming murder

    and mayhem, DVDs and

    homework. After a few days

    our family got accustomed to

    using the bathroom in the

    dark, wearing jackets indoors

and spending most of our time

together in one room (the one

    with the fireplace!). The smell

of gasoline permeated ourhome, as did the fumes from

    the generator.

    When my kids pulled up

to the gas pumps, the question

of cash or credit was replaced

with Fill up your tank or your

gas cans? With a $40 limit, it

was simply one or the other.

    And though it was aggravating

    and frustrating waiting for

    JCP&L and Optimum to

    show-up, we realized that we

    were truly blessed. With no

injuries, no property loss and agenerator at hand, we were

    considered among the fortu-

nate. Those around us did not

    possess a generator, nor did

    they have a multitude of

licensed children to go to the

    gas pumps simultaneously to

wait three hours for a drop or

two of gas. As they waited in

line, I went to the hardware

store for a 25 foot piece of plas-

tic tubing to siphon our vehi-cles if it came to that. A 100-

    foot extension cord from

    Lowe's cost $89 plus tax and I

had to buy two. When added

    to the existing ones, it

    stretched 1,000 feet around

    and through my home.

    In NJ, 33 people perished

from the east coast storm of the

    century named Sandy. The

    Jersey shore was smashed with

property losses in the billions, but more than that, irreplace-

    able mementos, pictures, col-

    lectibles and heirlooms, furni-

    ture and entire homes were

    gone, swallowed up by the

Atlantic. Most of us in the

Wayne area lost a little time, a

week or two without pay, and

    saw our blood pressure rise

    when waiting on the power

company as well as the inter-

    net provider. But by compari-

son to our brethren south and

east of us, we lost very little.

With our focus off Sandy, we

are ready to refocus on the

    headlines once again.

Back to the quest of financial

    independence:

    Maximizing our income

    today while simultaneously

preserving, protecting and per-petuating our wealth for

    tomorrow! We can return to

    the mission of eliminating,

    avoiding and deferring income

    taxes in addition to preparing

for the effects of the fiscal

cliff brought on by the elimi-

    nation of tax reductions, the

    increase in income tax rates

    and the addition of the

    Obamacare tax levies, along

with the mandatory cuts inentitlement and military

    spending. Some experts predict

    increases in unemployment,

    decreases in stock prices,

    reductions in credit availability

and more volatility in both the

    domestic and foreign stock

markets. As we have all wit-

    nessed firsthand, regardless of a

    hurricane or portfolio plan-

    ning, the seven P's prevail:

    The tooth contains the

    pulp (nerve) in the

    center, which is made

up of nerves and blood vessels.

It provides feeling, as well as

new cells that repair the tooth.

Diseases of this area are hid-

    den inside the tooth, diag-

    nosed by symptoms, special

tests, and X-rays. Injury to the

    pulp can cause pulpitis, which

    causes sensitivity to different

    degrees.

    Injury to the dental pulp

causes changes that build upover time and destroy the

nerve. Most of the time it is

    caused by deep tooth decay

    (bacteria), deep fillings,

    cracked teeth, broken fillings,

or trauma. If it is a mild injury,

    inflammation will occur and

    many times the pulp will

repair itself. The tooth will be

    sensitive to hot and cold

things, but this should go away

in a short period of time. If a

long-standing injury is leftwithout treatment, the tooths

    pulp will die. Sometimes the

    pulp dies without any symp-

toms and may only be detected

if the tooth breaks, turns dark,

or shows up on an X-ray.

    Reversible pulpitis is mild

    inflammation and is capable of

healing when treated by a den-

    tist. Symptoms and signs

    include:

    1. Sensitivity to cold, sweets, and

sometimes heat2. Pain stops in a few seconds

    3. Pain is short and sharp but

    doesnt occur by itself

    4. Pain caused by extreme tem-

    peratures, not mild ones

    Irreversible pulpitis is not

    capable of healing; the tooths

    pulp dies and infection soon

    follows. Symptoms include:

    1. Lingering pain from hot or

    cold

    2. Initial sharp pain to cold or hot

    3. Pain from mild temperatures

    4. A dull ache or throbbing pain

    5. Spontaneous pain that wakes

you up at night or when you lie

    down6. Swollen face

Part 4 of this series will

    conclude with diagnosis and

    treatment.

    Tax planning may seem

    too difficult in the

    current political and

    economic environment. But

    reviewing your tax situation

    before the end of2012 will

    position you to act quickly

    when the timing is right.

    Some rules that applied

    when you prepared your 2011

    federal income tax return

    have expired, others are

expected to expire at the end

of this year and new provi-

sions are slated to begin in

2013. Here are a few tax

    strategies to consider as year-

    end 2012 approaches.

    Review options for accelerat-

    ing income

    The idea of paying feder-

al and state income tax early

may make you wince, but hav-

ing a plan in place in case pay-

ing now results in saving later

is still a good idea. One rea-

    son: Some methods of pulling

    income from 2013 into 2012

    require time time you may

not have if you wait until the

    last minute.

    For instance, say a viable

    tax planning strategy involves

    taking a payroll bonus from

    your business at year-end. You

might choose to do this to

    take advantage of the current

reduced rate of 4.2 percent for

    the employee portion of social

    security tax, which expires on

    December 31, 2012. Perhaps

your goal is to lower the

    amount of your 2013 income

that will be subject to either

the 3.8 percent or 0.9 percent

    Medicare surtaxes taking

effect next year. Or maybe you

    want additional earned

    income so you can increase

    your retirement plan contri-

    bution.

    Timing matters if youre

    thinking of another tax plan-

    ning move: distributing a div-

    idend from your corporation

    this year, while the maximum

    tax rate for qualified dividends

    is 15 percent.

    Retirement accounts also

    offer opportunities for acceler-

ating income into 2012. If you

turned 70 this year and you

expect to be subject to higher

taxes in 2013, it may make

    sense to take your initial

    required minimum distribu-

    tion by December 31 instead

    of waiting until next April.

    Remember, too, that you

    can withdraw funds without

    penalty from traditional IRAs

    beginning at age 59-1/2. In

    some cases, penalty excep-

    tions apply when youre under

    age 59-1/2.

    Converting your tradi-

tional IRA to a Roth also

    increases income in 2012. You

can put this strategy in place

now, because it comes with an

    added benefit: you can change

your mind later, even after the

    Roth conversions pro-

    vide future-year tax breaks,

    too. Unlike traditional IRAs,

    withdrawals from Roth

    accounts are not mandatory.

When you do choose to take

them, they are not subject to

    the new 3.8 percent Medicare

    surtax, nor are they included

    in figuring the taxable amount

    of your social security benefits.

    Regular income tax plan-

ning is only one factor in the

    decision to increase current-

    year income.

    The alternative mini-

    mum tax (AMT) is another.

    The last annual AMT patch

expired at the end of 2011 and

    youll want to understand your

    exposure based on current

    rules.

    Dont overlook less obvious

    income

    At this point in 2012,

you have a fairly complete pic-

ture of your income for the

    year from sources such as

    salary, retirement plan distri-

    butions, and dividends. The

    total of those, combined with

    other predictable income

    items, provides a good starting

    point for tax planning one

    youll want to augment by

    thinking about less obvious

    additions to income.

    An example is taxable

    capital gains distributed by

    mutual funds. These differ

    from the gain you recognize

    when you sell mutual fund

    shares you own. Capital gain

    distributions from funds occur

when a fund manager makes a

    profit selling investments the

    fund owns. Those gains are

    passed to shareholders, and

    you generally have no control

    over the timing. The distrib-

uted gains are taxable even if

    you reinvest them in addition-

    For more information or to

    Theres another great

    debate about the

    feline as a pet besides

    the declawing issue. This

    great debate concerns allow-

ing the feline to roam out-

    doors versus living indoors.

    Should you allow your cat

    to roam outdoors? Lets find

    out.

    Outdoor Felines

    Cats are essentially

    wild creatures, and they

    have always loved the out-

    doors. What feline owner

    hasnt watched his cat loll

in a patch of sunshine on a

    winter day, or roll content-

edly in the dirt in its own

    backyard? Cats do love the

    sunshine, the outdoors, and

    the fresh air. However, out-

    door cats are susceptible to

    more diseases, more injuries,

    and more health problems.

    Outdoor cats may tussle

    with other cats, catch para-

sites or other diseases, or be

hit by a car or caught by

    other predators. They can

    also be poisoned by pesti-

    cides, antifreeze left unat-

    tended, or other toxins. They

    can cause problems with

    neighbors by using their

yards as a cat box. Outdoor

cats simply arent as safe as

    indoor cats.

    Indoor Felines

    Indoor cats live longer,

    healthier lives. Studies prove

    it and common sense dictates

    it. Indoor cats have many

    advantages outdoor cats cant

    hope to have. Outdoor cats

live on an average of 3 to 5

    years, while indoor cats live

an average of 12 years or

    more. My last indoor cats

lived to be 19 and nearly 21.

    Indoor cats enjoy safety

    and comfort. They are safe

    from diseases that feral cats

    may carry and outdoor cats

pick up. They are safe from

    cat fights, cars, and preda-

    tors. And, indoor cats wont

    harm other wildlife, such as

    birds and small animals.

    Alternatives

    There are many alterna-

    tives to the outdoor lifestyle.

    When kittens first come

    home, they should be

    kept indoors. If your

    cats miss their outdoor

    excursions, you might

    try to train them to

    wear a harness and

    walk on a leash.

    They will still be

    able to enjoy the

    outdoors, but much more

    safely.

    Another alternative is

    to create a safe outdoor

area or run where the cats

    can go outside but cannot

    escape the area. There are

    many outdoor runs avail-

able now that connect to a

cat door and allow the cat

access to a run on a patio or

    in a backyard.

    You can also allow the

cat outdoors on a patio or

    deck when you are outdoors,

and only for a short time. Or,

you can use a carrier to take

your kitty for walks in the

    sunshine.

    Keeping kitty indoors

    will keep it healthy, happy,

    and free of infectious diseases

    it might catch outside. Each

    pet owner is responsible for

    his own pets health and

    well-being. Keeping kitty

    inside is the choice that

    makes sense.

    Over the past few

    years, how many

    times have you

    heard or asked that question?

    In Northern New Jersey, its

    starting to become as com-

    mon as Hello! People who

come into my store are always

    asking me about backup

    power solutions. After the

    severe power outages that we

    have suffered through last

    year with the blizzards, floods

    and hurricanes, the question

has been How do we keep

    our power on?

Up until last week, I was

    dismissing last year as an

    anomaly. Well, the anomaly

    is becoming a pattern. While

not a gambler, I do know and

believe a rule of gambling: If

    something happens twice, its

a streak. Well, here we are

    after the second straight year

    of prolonged power outages. I

    dont know whats

    causing weather

    changes, but I do

    know something has

    increased the severity

    of our weather. More

    multiple-day outages

    are to be expected.

    There are two prac-

    tical solutions. Both

    include gaining inde-

    pendence from the

    utilities, thus reducing

    our dependence on

    them as a reliable

    power source. The first solu-

tion is to install a standby

    power generator. Running off

    natural gas or propane, this

    solution can satisfy at least

    your most critical require-

    ments for power. In most

    cases of severe weather, a

    generator allows families to

    continue to go about their

    daily routines of showering,

    cooking, heating, cooling and

    Many people harbor

    strong opinions

    with regard to

    which type of Christmas tree

    they want to purchase.

    Some cannot live

    without a natural,

    freshly-cut Christmas

    tree, while others pre-

    fer the convenience of

    artificial trees. Those

    who insist on a natu-

    ral tree might want to

    consider the following

    tips when buying

    whats likely their

    biggest decorative

    item of the holiday

    season.

    Ask when the tree

    was cut down. Precut

    trees may be cut down

    weeks before theyre

    sold. So if youre buy-

ing a precut tree, chances are

the tree was cut down much

    earlier than you think. This

    doesnt mean the tree wont

    make it through the holiday

season, but a tree that was cut

    several weeks ago should have

    some of its bottom trunk

    removed before its placed in

the stand. This will make it

easier for the tree to consume

    water. This step likely isnt

necessary if the tree was cut

down the same day you bring

    it home.

    Have the tree shaken before

    taking it home. A tree

    should be shaken in a

    shaker before you put

    it in your car and

bring it home. A shak-er removes any debris

    or dead needles from

    the tree, which can

    save you the trouble of

    cleaning up all of

    those dead needles

    from your living room

    floor later on.

    Have the tree

    wrapped before taking

    it home. A tree should

    also be wrapped in

    twine before taking it

    home. The twine

    should be tight

    enough to keep the trees

    branches from blowing in the

wind when you attach the tree

to the top of your vehicle. If

    possible, keep the tree

wrapped in twine as you place

it in the stand. This makes the

    tree easier to control.

    Choose the right location.

    When looking for the right

place to set up your natural

tree, its best to choose a spot

thats cool and free of drafts.

The tree should not be placed

near heat sources, includingappliances, fireplaces or vents

    because such heat sources cre-

ate a safety hazard and can

make it difficult for the tree to

    retain moisture. There should

    also be ample space between

the top of the tree and the

    ceiling.

    Place some covering on the

    ground beneath the tree. Even

a freshly cut natural tree will

shed needles over the courseof the holiday season. Before

placing the stand in the loca-

tion youve chosen, put sometype of covering, such as a tree

bag, beneath the stand so its

easier to gather all those nee-

    dles once the holiday season

    has ended.

    Remember that natural trees

    are thirsty. Those who have

    never had a natural Christmas

tree in the past might be sur-

prised at just how thirsty natu-

ral trees get. The stands reser-

voir should have lots of water, which should never dip below

the stump. If the water dips

below the stump, you might be

forced to cut a little more off

the bottom of the trunk to

ensure the tree will make it

    through the holiday season.

That can be a hassle once the

tree has been decorated, so be

sure to check the water in the

reservoir at least once per day

    to maintain adequate waterlevels.

    With the economystill struggling,

    money is tight for

    many homeowners. That

    reality can present a problem

    to those who want to

    improve their homes without

    spending too much money.

The cost of a homeimprovement project

depends on a host of factors,

    including the scale of the

    project and the availability of

    materials. Upscale projects

    like a full roof replacement

    will set homeowners back a

substantial amount of money. In its 2011-2012 Cost vs.

    Value Report, Remodeling

    magazine revealed that the

average cost of such a project

    was nearly $38,000.

    However, a smaller project

    like a garage door replace-

ment could be completed forfewer than $3,000.

    When deciding if a

    home improvement project is

    within your budget, its a

good idea to consult such fig-

    ures before choosing a proj-

    ect. For example, if your

    home is a fixer-upper, then

one project may not be more

    urgent than another, some-

thing that may allow you to

choose less expensive proj-ects now while saving money

    for more expensive projects

    down the road.

    Its also important for

    homeowners to know that

figures such as those in the

    Cost vs. Value Report are

    just averages. Some projects

    might cost more than the

    average, while others might

    come in well under budget.

To ensure your project is oneof the latter and not the for-

    mer, consider the following

ways to trim costs off yournext home improvement

    project.

Avoid the DIY (do it your-

    self) movement if you dont

    have adequate experience.

Many homeowners fall intothe DIY trap, feeling they

can pull off a project without

hiring a professional contrac-tor. While this is an option

    for those homeowners with

    home improvement experi-

    ence, its an approach thats

    best avoided by those with-

out such experience.Homeowners who decide to

go it alone on a home

improvement project shouldknow that mistakes are cost-

    ly. One mistake could have

    you paying for the same

    materials twice: once when

    you begin the project, and

then again when you need to

    hire a contractor after your

    efforts didnt work out. A

    failed DIY project also costs

    you time, something home-

    owners hoping to sell their

    homes post-project cannotafford to waste.

    Hire the right contractor.

    The best contractor for the

job wont necessarily be theone who comes in with the

    lowest estimate. The right

    contractor will know how

long a project will take and

    what the materials will cost.

    The wrong contractor, who

    might lack the experience of

    his competitors, might make

    empty promises that ulti-

    mately cost you more money

via overrun costs. Find a con-

tractor who comes highlyrecommended and is willing

    to provide references and

show you his or her past proj-

ects like the one youre hiringhim or her to undertake. If

    you hire the wrong contrac-

tor, the project may never be

    completed and you may find

    yourself in court, where the

    money you had budgeted for

    home improvements is being

    spent on lawyers instead.

    maintaining communications

with the rest of the world. They do have a downside. An

endless supply of gas is not

    guaranteed. As we recently

    saw, natural gas companies

    were forced in many loca-

tions to cut their supplies off

due to danger of explosion. In

    these areas, the standby gen-

erators did no good until sup-

    ply lines were brought back

    online. Portable generators

help also, but you need gaso-

    line, which, as weve seen,

was not easy to come by.

The second solution isthe ideal solution. Installing

a solar system with a backup

    power supply can reduce your

    dependence on your utility.

    This technology is now an

    affordable alternative. The

way it works is simple: A grid-

    tied solar system on your

homes roof or in your yard

    generates power during the

day. The power first charges a

    set of batteries until fully

    charged, then provides elec-

tricity to offset the usage in

your home. Any excess elec-tricity generated is sent back

    into the grid. Through net

    metering, you are paid nor-

mal retail rates for this elec-

    tricity by your utility.

    When utility power is

shut down due to an event

    such as Hurricane Sandy or

Katrina, or a major blizzard or

    earthquake, switches are acti-

    vated that redirect your

    power source completely to

    solar and battery backup. As

    long as we have daylight,

youll have power. If the sunshould stop shinning, it wont

    matter anyway, as power

    wont be our biggest concern!

    Your homes usage dic-

tates how big of a solar system

youll need. The size of your

    backup battery system is

    dependent on how long youll

    want that usage to continue.

Sizing your system is key to

    providing the proper power

    levels. These backup systems

    can even be installed on

    homes with existing solar sys-

    tems.The one obstacle to

solar: not every home is solar

    worthy. In that case, a

    standby generator is the best

    solution. But, if you are

    solar worthy, installing

    solar with a battery backup

system is your best bet to pro-

    tecting your home and family.

    So, whats the best reply

to Did you get power back

    yet? Well, homeowners with

    the solutions above can

    answer I never lost it!

    Be a Thanksgiving

    hero this year. If dis-

    aster strikes on

    Thanksgiving Day, face it

    head-on with these simple

    fixes for common mishaps.

    1.Unexpected guests show

    up.

    Aunt Sally brought

    along her new boyfriend

and his three brothers? Noproblem. Youve already

    prepared for this by buying

    a boneless turkey breast. A

    2 1/2-pound boneless breast

only takes around 1 1/2 hours

to cook. After its sliced up and

added to the serving platter, no

one will be the wiser. And if

you dont end up using it, freeze

it for the next time you get a

    turkey craving.

2.My potatoes are lumpy.Lumpy mashed potatoes

    generally mean undercooked

potatoes. If you get to this point

    and you realize youve under-

cooked your potatoes, just add a

little bit of milk or cream and

cook the potatoes over a low

heat until the lumps begin to

    soften. Next time, make sure

you cook the potatoes fully by

    inserting a fork into them

before taking them off the heat.

If the fork slips in easily, theyre

    done.

    3.My gravy isnt smooth.

If flour is added too quick-ly, the gravy will wind up with

    clumps of flour. Avoid this

    problem by gradually adding

the flour into the gravy base.

You can do this by sprinkling it

into the gravy or with a fine

sieve if you prefer. For extra

    insurance, try pouring the

    gravy through a sieve just

    before serving.

    Ingredients

    2 (14-ounce) packages

    gingerbread mix

    1 (5.1-ounce) box cook-

    and- serve vanilla

    pudding mix

    1 (30-ounce) can pumpkin

pie filling12 cup packed brown sugar13 teaspoon ground

    cardamom or cinnamon1 (12-ounce) container

frozen whipped topping12 cup gingersnaps, optional

    Directions

    Bake the gingerbread accord-

    ing to the package directions;

    cool completely. Meanwhile,

    prepare the pudding and set

aside to cool. Stir the pumpkin

    pie filling, sugar, and car-

    damom into the pudding.

Crumble 1 batch of ginger-bread into the bottom of a

large, pretty bowl. Pour 1/2 of

    the pudding mixture over the

    gingerbread, then add a layer

    of whipped topping. Repeat

    with the remaining ginger-

    bread, pudding, and whipped

    topping. Sprinkle of the top

    with crushed gingersnaps, if

    desired. Refrigerate overnight.

Trifle can be layered in apunch bowl. Serves 20.

    5.My pumpkin pie or cheesecake

    has cracked on top.

    Theres nothing a little

    confectioners sugar or whipped

    cream cant hide. Top your

cracked pie or cake with one or

the other and your guests will

admire you for rememberingthe finishing touches. There are

a lot of reasons custards may

crack, and two of the most

    common involve cooking and

    cooling time. Avoid the crack

next year by cooking the cus-

tard for less time. Custards need

to cook only until just set. And

    cool custard gradually by turn-

ing off the oven, propping the

oven door slightly ajar and let-

ting it come to room tempera-ture before refrigerating.

    Another potential item

to spread the tax over two

    years, youll need to include
