Konstantin Novoselov, 36, first worked with Andre Geim, 51, as a PhD-student Playfulness is one of their hallmarks, one always learns something in the process.

A thin flake of ordinary carbon, just one atom thick. The unit hexagonal cell of graphene. As a material

it is completely new – not only the thinnest ever but also the strongest.

As a conductor of heat it outperforms all other known materials.

It is almost completely transparent, yet so dense that not even helium, the smallest gas atom, can pass through it.

A hypothetical hammock from graphene would thus weigh like whisker. In our 1 m2 hammock tied between two trees you could place a weight of approximately 4 kg before it would break. It should thus be possible to make an almost invisible hammock out of graphene that could hold a cat without breaking.

Carbon, the basis of all known life on earth, has surprised us once again.

Project Management Changes“The individual reports gave the impression that the project was not fully coordinated, which was acknowledged by the WPs leaders during the review.”

•The Quality assurance process has been modified to enter at an earlier stage•The Technical Project Management Lead (TPML) has engaged more people•The TPML has been given the tools to increase the rate of progress

Reuse of existing material and Standards•The project have made sure to reuse existing Semantic standards •This also goes for all the technical specifications

Involvement of Local Users •National epSOS Pilot Coordinators (NEPCs) has been introduced to ensure proper communication and coordination with the National Contact Points (NCPs). •The Project now engages 700+ contributors and many more in its pilot sites

1. Consolidate and scale up piloted epSOS services2. Extend and refine functionalities of the two core

services3. Assess the use of the epSOS patient summary

service in the context of the European emergency (112) service

4. Comparatively assess the interoperability approaches of epSOS services with those in other regions of the world,

21.04.23 Page 21Crystals of Golden Proportions

“There can be no such creature” noted Dan Shechtman including ???

The atoms in the crystal in front of him yielded a

forbidden symmetry. It questioned the most

fundamental truth of their science: that all crystals consist of repeating, periodic patterns.

It was wrong According to the Textbook Furthermore, such

a crystal was not represented in the International Tables for Crystallography – the main crystallographic reference guide. The pattern does not repeat itself, which was proof enough to scientists that it was not possible to obtain fivefold symmetries in crystals.

When Shechtman told scientists about his discovery, he

was faced with complete opposition, and some colleagues even resorted to ridicule. Many claimed that what he had observed was in fact a twin crystal. The head of the laboratory gave him a textbook of crystallography and suggested he should read it.

Fighting Established Knowledge. Shechtman, of course,

already knew what it said but trusted his experiments more than the textbook. All the commotion finally led his boss to ask him to leave the research group, as Schechtman himself recalled later. The situation had become too embarrassing.
