2014 Cross Country

Roger Erricker will look to senior standouts Ashley Simmons and Elisabeth Tauber to lead the way as he enters his 30th season as head coach of both the Tigers’ cross country and track programs.

In 2013, Erricker saw great strides made by a young team and the season’s top runner was junior Elisabeth Tauber. The Tigers had fi ve top ten runners at the Baltimore Metro meet where the team fi nished in fi rst place. The Tigers fi nished sixth at the Colonial Athletic Association championship.

Tauber had a remarkable campaign in 2013, setting school records in both the 5K and 6K and being named the CAA Runner of the Week three times. Tauber picked up honors as she became only the fourth runner in Towson history to be named All-CAA. She placed in the top three overall at fi ve meets including her second place fi nish at the Eastern College Athletic Conference championship, the Tigers’ last meet of the season.

In 2012, Erricker guided the Tigers to a winning record for the 12th consecutive season. The Tigers fi nished as one of the top fi ve teams in a meet fi ve times and fi nished in fi fth place at the CAA championship. Tauber posted a time of 19:00.86 at the Towson Invitational, which was the ninth-fastest time by a Tiger at Towson’s home course, Oregon Ridge Park.

The 2011 season was the last for record-setter Katie Ogden and a host of other valuable contributors for the Tigers. Senior Katie Gilmartin-Donohue joined Ogden on the All-CAA squad at the conference meet, marking the fi rst time in school history the Tigers had multiple runners earn all-conference honors in the same year.

In 2010, Erricker guided the Tigers to two meet victories. The team won back-to-back team titles at the Delaware Invitational, in which they defeated CAA rivals Delaware and George Mason. The team then followed that up by running away with the Towson Invitational a week later.

The 2009-10 year was a banner year that marked his 25th anniversary at Towson. His outdoor track team fi nished in third place fi nish at the CAA championship meet. Hurdler Ashley Adams was named the league’s Co-Female Athlete of the Year for women’s track. The team broke 14 indoor and outdoor school records.

Since arriving on campus in 1985, Erricker has logged more years coaching at Towson than all of the university’s other coaches.

In 1978 Erricker won the Mason-Dixon Conference Indoor high jump title with a 6-6 leap while competing for his alma mater, Frostburg State, in the Towson Center. He never imagined that he would return to the Towson campus only to coach the Tigers’ cross country and track teams.

Erricker came to Towson as its women’s cross country and assistant track coach. In 1986 he was appointed head track coach, responsible for overseeing six varsity squads. After the 2003-04 season, Towson discontinued cross country, indoor track and outdoor track for men.

He has led the women’s cross country program for 29 of its 32 years, compiling a 935-559-7 record.

Erricker’s college coaching career has yielded interesting success. In 1992, his women’s cross country team fi nished second in the Big South Conference meet, just three points from the championship. In 1998, his men’s squad placed third in the pres-tigious Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) meet.

A number of individuals have performed well over the years too. Maureen Shan-eman went on to a very successful road racing career, was unbeaten during the 1987 regular season and fi nished third in the East Coast Conference championships. Vikki Benhardt, a 2007 inductee into Towson’s Athletic Hall of Fame, won the 1991 ECC title. Shaneman is a 2010 TU Hall of Fame inductee.

Buffy Gavigan was an All-Conference runner who went on to teach chemistry and biology at nearby Calvert Hall High School where she was the head cross country and

track coach for over a decade. Megan Lerch was an All-Colonial Athletic Association selection after fi nishing 9th in the 2004 conference championships.

On the men’s side, Paul Borg missed winning the 1998 America East title by a second. Doug Stewart and John Supsic joined Borg as All-East selections with all three fi nishing in the IC4A top 20. Erik Estrada was an All-Big South runner and Paul Waters All-ECC performer.

Erricker can point with much pride to his team’s academic success. The women’s cross country team usually perches on the top rung of the athletic department’s semester grade point average ladder. The track team tied for 14th nationally among 151 schools on the U.S. Track and Field and Cross County Coaches Association’s 2010 Division I All-Academic Scholar teams list. Of the 41 athletes on the track squad, 35 turned in a GPA of a 3.0 or better.

Erricker attended Gaithersburg High School, winning a Maryland state high jump title with a leap of 6-6. After a year at Charleston Southern he transferred to Montgom-ery Community College, winning the Eastern Junior College high jump championship. In 1979 he earned his degree in History and Social Science at Frostburg, leaving with a Mason-Dixon high jump title. The best jump of his career was a 6-7.

After receiving his degree Erricker followed in his father’s footsteps as a huntsman and cared for fox hounds at Andrews Bridge Fox Hunt Club in Pennsylvania and the Elkridge-Harford Hunt Club near Baltimore. Four years later he entered the education profession, teaching at Howard High School where he coached track for three years and junior varsity football for one year.

In 1985, Howard won the Maryland state boys track championship on his watch. The year before, Laurie Governor, who went on to enjoy a successful college basketball career at Richmond, won the state shot put title with a record throw that stood for over a decade.

Erricker has coached three NCAA Division I Championship competitors while at Towson in high jumper Laura Passalacqua, javelin thrower Kelly Robinson and hurdler Ashley Adams.

2014 Cross Country

Garry MayAssistant Coach Ball State, ’086th Season

Responsible for mentoring Towson’s dis-tance runners and horizontal jumpers, Garry May is entering his sixth year coaching the Tigers’ cross country and track programs.

In 2013, May received the highest level cer-tifi cation (Level 3) from the United States Track

and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) in the jumping events. May began his collegiate coaching career at Towson, joining the Tigers for the

2009-10 indoor season as a volunteer assistant. He became a part-time assistant in 2011-12 before receiving his full-time appointment for the start for the 2012-13 year.

Since then, he has earned his Tiger stripes by producing positive results. His resume boasts of the cross country and track distance records that have fallen at a steady pace since his arrival at Towson in 2009.

In 2013, current senior Elisabeth Tauber rewrote the cross country record book when she clocked a 17:52.18 and became the fi rst Tiger in history to eclipse the 18:00 barrier for cross country. Tauber also ran a program best in the 6K (21:08.25). Tauber became only the fourth runner in Towson history to be named All-Colonial Athletic Asso-ciation (CAA), determined by placing among the championship meet’s top 12 fi nishers. May has guided three of the four All-CAA honorees in cross country.

In 2011, Kaylin Gilmartin-Donohue and Katie Ogden were named All-CAA. This was Ogden’s second All-CAA team award, earning this honor a year prior in 2010.

Indoors, during the 2013-14 season, Elisabeth Tauber broke the school record for the 3000m (10:11.01) and the 5000m (17:22.67). Tauber represented Towson at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Championship meet in the 5000m. Kara Bucaro ran in the ECAC meet in the 1000m.

In 2011, Ogden qualifi ed for the 5000m fi nal at the ECAC Indoor Championship meet. In 2010, Gilmartin-Donohue became Towson’s record holder in the mile (4:54.98). Gilmartin-Donohue also fi nished in 7th place in the mile run at the ECAC Indoor Cham-pionship meet.

On the outdoor track, May guided Tauber in 2014 as she reset Towson’s record for the 10,000m (36:56.68), becoming the fi rst Tiger to break the 36 minute mark in the 10K.Tauber earned All-CAA honors as she fi nished third in the 10,000m at the CAA Outdoor Championship meet. Tauber also qualifi ed for the 10,000m fi nal at the ECAC Outdoor Championship meet and fi nishing in sixth place, earning ECAC All-East.

In 2013, Tauber broke the program’s record in the 5000m by running a time of 17:19:19.

In 2011, Ogden placed third in the 10,000m at the CAA Championship meet and earned All-CAA. Ogden also qualifi ed for the 10,000m fi nal at the ECAC Outdoor Cham-pionship meet where she fi nished in fourth place and earned ECAC All-East.

In 2010, Gilmartin-Donohue took over as Towson’s leader in the 1500m (4:30.44). Megan DiGregorio assumed command of the 3000 steeplechase mark (10.56.69).

Additionally Towson’s 4x800 relay and distance medley relay records have fallen under May’s direction.

Collegiately, May ran cross country and track at Indiana State before transferring to Ball State where he earned a degree in Sports Administration in 2008. Although Ball State had discontinued both cross country and track, he continued to train on his own.

Prior to moving to Maryland he helped out at his alma mater, Angola (Ind.) High School, drafting workouts for the distance programs. Upon arriving in Maryland, he was named cross country coach at Indian Creek Upper School in Crownsville where he developed a burgeoning program.

An avid runner, May posted his personal record of 1:21:24 for a seventh place fi nish in the 2010 Lancaster, Pa. Bird-In-Hand Half Marathon. He is continuing his marathon training to qualify for the Boston Marathon.

Oregon Ridge ParkOregon Ridge Park, located in the rolling countryside of northern Baltimore County and just 15 minutes from the Tigers’ campus, has been Towson’s home course since 1988.

The course was laid out by Towson coach Roger Erricker, who admits, “Actually, God designed it, I just measured it.”

A very spectator friendly course instead of the “wave goodbye, hurry back,” type layout, it has become the premier course in the metropolitan area.

It’s utilized by local high schools in addition to local colleges and universities. The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference which is Morgan State and Coppin State’s league, holds its championship meet on it as does Johns Hopkins University when it hosts the Centennial Conference meet.
