Stockinette Stitch: Knit on RS rows Purl on WS rows 3 needle bind off

Turning work inside out, move to 2 needles with half of work on each needle. With 2 needles parallel, insert a 3rd needle knitwise into the first stitch of each needle. Wrap the yarn around the needle as if to knit. Knit these 2 stitches together and slip them off the needle. Knit the next 2 stitches together (same manner). Slip the first stitch on the 3rd needle over the 2nd stitch and off the needle. Continue until all stitches are bound off. Front: With 24” needles, CO 78 (84, 90) sts. Work K1, P1 ribbing for 1, 1½, 1¾”

Change to Broken Rib: Row 1 (RS): Knit Row 2: (WS): (K1, P1) Repeat across work as established for 7½, 8½, 10½”

K 6 (6, 8) rows (Garter st) Work 2 (2, 4) rows St st. Decrease: For Armholes: Work Stockinette stitch for 2 (2, 3) rows, then start decreases: BO 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 3 sts, then 1 st at beg of next 2 rows 60 (66, 72) sts

Start pattern on next row.

K8 (7, 10) sts, work 5 (6, 6) repeats of pattern. K6 (5, 8).

Pattern is 9 rows high, right side read from right to left of chart, wrong side read from left to right. Resume St st until armhole measure 2½ (4, 5)” from beginning of armhole shaping.

Neck shaping:

RS: On next row, K23 (25, 27), BO12 (14, 16), K23(25, 27) sts Purl one row.

At beginning of following rows, BO 3 sts twice, 2 sts 4 times, 1 st 4 times (9 sts decreased on each side)

Place these shoulder sts on holders.

Back: Work as for front, omitting pattern and working straight above beg of armhole for 5½ (6, 7).” Joining front to back: Holding right sides together, join left shoulder sts in 3 needle bind off.

Button and buttonhole plackets: Slip remaining 14 (16, 18) sts to needle and work as follows on front: K for 3 (3, 4) rows. On next row, make 3 evenly spaced buttonholes (K2tog, YO) Then K3 (3, 4) more rows. Bind off.

Slip placket sts on back holder to needles and K7 (7, 9) rows. Bind off. Join fronts to back on side seams.

Neck ribbing: With RS facing and starting at top corner of back placket, pick up and knit sts along the side of placket, around neck and up the side of other placket. Approximately 72 (76, 80) sts.

Leaving placket side open, work back and forth in K1, P1 ribbing for 4 (6, 6) rows. On second row of rib (side with buttonholes on placket, rib 2, YO, K2tog to create a buttonhole. Bind off in ribbing.

Armholes: Using needles for smaller circumference and with RS facing, starting at underarm seam, pick up and knit sts around armhole. On side with placket, hold front and back placket edges together and pick up sts through both. There will be approx. 60 (66, 72) sts. K1, P1 ribbing for 6 (8, 8) rounds. Bind off in ribbing.

Finishing:

Weave in all ends.

Sew on buttons.

Wet Block garment as necessary.
