Our students have utilised their skills in growth mindsets to challenge their assumptions and use grit to complete tasks, even when initially failing. Students have worked on their writing skills to develop strong texts to persuade and entertain their audiences. In 2019 we will continue working on collaboration and develop strong skills in STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Students will be solving real-life problems as well as using tools such as coding, robotics and Lego. I would like to take the opportunity to wish our Year 6 students all the best in their journey through high school. They are leaving us prepared to rise to any challenges and we know that they have the ability to succeed if they continue to believe in themselves. To our wonderful community, we have enjoyed working closely with you this year to develop strong policy around anti-bullying and our school values. The work around PBIS with our whole community will be evident when we return to school. New signage will be placed around the school highlighting our commitment to maintaining our values and expectations. Busy Bees SPS Top Tip 7: Language and Cooking

• Cooking with your child is a great way to encourage them to help you with daily chores but also a positive and engaging way to build their language skills.

• Cooking can be as simple as making eggs on toast for breakfast or baking a cake. It is important to be actively involved in this activity and supervising your child near cooking/heating appliances.

• Following recipes promotes these skills: o Reading the recipe and talking it through with your child o Understanding the steps involved o Writing the ingredient list o Measuring ingredients and using accurate vocabulary whilst measuring

them e.g. quantity (one cup, two teaspoons) o Sharing tasks e.g. you break the eggs and your child whisks them o Sequencing (order of steps) o Giving simple to complex verbal instructions e.g. crack the egg; or crack the

egg and beat it. o Vocabulary

Naming words e.g. plate, whisk, spatula, scale Action words e.g. stir, beat, mix, crack, chop, sprinkle Describing words e.g. soft, hard, stretchy

• Whilst following the recipe you can talk about the ingredients you are using:

o Shape (oval, round) o Colour (red, brown, clear) o Texture (soft, hard, grainy, smooth, silky, bumpy) o Size (large, small, tiny)

• Once you have finished cooking, a perfect way to recap the language and steps

involved is to sit with your child to enjoy the meal.

• You can have them list the ingredients and materials they used and recount the steps involved.

The team at Busy Bees Speech Pathology Services wishes you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We look forward to seeing you in 2019.
