QURAN PROMOTES JIHAD AND HOLYWAR Some think that the term "jihad" means "holy war"and it is a requirement which all Muslims mustengage in. jihad is a common Arabic word meaning tostrive/struggle or exert effort, and is used indifferent ways depending on context in The Quran.We learn from The Quran that believers must bewilling to exert effort in the cause of God, usingtheir wealth and themselves. This effort/jihad mayor may not include fighting. It does not have anexclusive meaning of holy war or fighting, asshown below. 4. QURAN PROMOTES JIHAD AND HOLYWAR An example in The Quran where jihad can meanparents striving to change the beliefs of theirchildren. Please note, even in such circumstancesbelievers are still asked to treat them amicably: If they strive to make you set up any partnersbesides Me, then do not obey them. Butcontinue to treat them amicably in this world.You shall follow only the path of those whohave sought Me. Ultimately, you all return toMe, then I will inform you of everything youhave done. QURAN PROMOTES JIHAD AND HOLYWAR In the following verses of The Quran, striving/jihadin Gods cause leading to guidance is contrasted toturning away from the truth and fabricating liesabout God: Who is more evil than one who fabricates liesand attributes them to God, or denies the truthwhen it comes to him? Is there not a place inHell for those who deny the truth? As for thosewho strive in Our cause, We will guide them toOur paths. For God is with the pious. [29:68-69] 6. QURAN PROMOTES JIHAD AND HOLYWAR The only time a great jihad is mentionedin The Quran is in the following verse andit refers to striving against those who denythe truth with the message of truth: And if We wish, We could send to everytown a warner. So do not obey thosewho deny the truth, and strive againstthem with it (The Quran) in a greatstriving. [25:51-52]
