Chapter 22 BSC6800 Upgrade Tool
22.1 Introduction
22.1.1 Definition
The BSC6800 upgrade tool can be used for remote and push-button upgrade of the Radio Network Controller (RNC).
The BSC6800 upgrade tool is applicable to upgrading the following objects:
BAM servers Board software and data on boards
Figure 22-1 shows the network topology for the BSC6800 upgrade tool.
RNC host
BAM_UPPER
BAM_LOWER
LAN
Upgrade client
Figure 22-1 Network topology for the BSC6800 upgrade tool
The elements in Figure 22-1 are described as follows:
Upgrade client: client on which upgrade personnel perform upgrade operations BAM_UPPER: one of the two BAM servers that the Wideband Code Division
Multiple Access (WCDMA) RNC uses BAM_LOWER: the other BAM server that the WCDMA RNC uses RNC host: host of the RNC
22.1.2 Purposes
Without the BSC6800 upgrade tool, maintainers must perform the upgrade at night due to the complex upgrade process. The tool helps reduce work load and avoid fatigue-induced mistakes, thus improving the availability of the RNC in terms of upgrade.

RAN Feature Description Chapter 22 BSC6800 Upgrade Tool
The RNC boasts higher availability in the following ways:
Enabling remote control
The maintainer controls the upgrade remotely on the upgrade client. No manual operation is necessary on site.
Enabling automatic upgrades
The tool combines the upgrade steps together to fulfill the push-button upgrade, thus simplifying the upgrade.
Improving time efficiency
All upgrade steps are scheduled and performed automatically without operator intervention. The whole process takes about 90 minutes, which is a great progress in time efficiency compared with the manual upgrade.
Improving upgrade reliability
The push-button upgrade process reduces the error rate.
Providing detailed upgrade reports
The tool generates a detailed report at the end of each upgrade phase. The reports state the upgrade process clear.
Supporting version rollback
The tool supports version rollback in case of upgrade failure. This ensures the proper operation of the system.

22.4.2 Ways to Obtain the BSC6800 Upgrade Tool
The BSC6800 upgrade tool is provided with the BAM software.
For example, if the delivered BAM software version is V100R006C010B060, the tool is stored under \V100R006C010B060\upgrade. For details, refer to the upgrade guide.
22.4.3 Principles for the BSC6800 Upgrade Tool
The BSC6800 upgrade tool combines the upgrade steps in sequence based on the three phases to fulfill the automatic upgrade.
In addition, the tool enables remote upgrades by separating execution and display.
22.4.4 Internal Upgrade Process for the BSC6800 Upgrade Tool
The BSC6800 upgrade tool is of two parts: server upgrade and client upgrade.
Figure 22-2 shows the internal upgrade process for the tool.
Start
Checks data on the active and standby BAM server
Upgrades the standby BAM server
Switches over the active and standby BAM servers
Loads data to the boards and restart the boards
Upgrades the other BAM server
Checks the software version
End
Figure 22-2 Internal upgrade process for the tool
The internal upgrade process for the tool is described as follows:
1) After the upgrade client starts up, the upgrade server checks data on the active and standby BAM servers before the upgrade.
2) The tool upgrades the standby BAM server.3) The tool switches over the active and standby BAM servers.4) The tool loads data to the boards and restarts the boards.5) The tool checks the software version.
