    (4) Shimonoseki 'lli'ban ~ (Mission. 24.3): The citiesof Shiraonoseki aod Moji are considered simultaneously since togetherthey control practically all traffic between Honshu and !(yUshu. Thereare 5 railroad yards in the tl'TO cities and a very large number ofttharves.. There are also numerous industries in and around the citie~.Shimonoseki. measures about .3 mles East-West and 1 oils North-Southwith, Shimonoseki Straits; omthe S)uth and mountaina to the north.     of the preponderant proportion of the fighters to an anticipated in-va~o~ Another controlling factor was also the apparent shortage ofaViLatlOn gasoline. Although the Japanese have night fighters they arefew in number and their equipment is far below that of Allied standards.F~r that reason interception by night fighters and night tighter-dayflghter combinatioIlB will remain weak. Moat of the interception il'il1p7'0bably occur in the target area where B-29s wUl be silhouetted byflres or by searchlights. There is nothing to indi cats that the enem;y-mil employ neu tactics and it can be assumed that the enenl will beable to warn his defenses from 3 to 5 hours prior to B-29 landfall andthat,there will be interceptors to meet bomber formations approximately50 mlles out to sea. T he diversity of the targets and poor operationalweather may reduce the anticipated fighter reaction indicated above.

    (2) Enemy Antiaircraft;(a) Mission Ne. 240, Xure Urban .Area:

    Heavy AA Guns:: 132; Medium .u 1'Ieapons: 83;Searchlights: 15 - 20., In addition to the land-emplaced defeu.sesseveral large una ts of the' Japanese fleet were in Xure harbor andvicini ty as follows; 1 BB, 1 CA, 2 CV, 1 CL am several DDs. Otherdefenses in the Rure area were; Hiroshima: 88 heavy A . A . and otak.e:ao heavy AA.

    g. Route. and.~Axis of' Attack:. The route to thetarget area was planned to avoid all other AA d.efenses. It lTas p1An.nedto attack this target frODl the southwest since, due to the terrain,this was the only satisfactory radar approach. Flak had caused exten-sive damage to our forces in this approach in daylight. However, onlymoderate flak \With fair searchlight effectiveness 118S expected at nightfor this was the first night attack on this city. A right breaka-;;ayavoiding other flak areas ~as specified.
