Immediate ScaffoldingImmediate scaffolding is provided to students based on their micro-actions, combined with research-derived and developmentally appropriate learning outcomes. For example, in the Cave of Sounds, students who don't select the target sound within one second are offered visual cues, audio instruction, or extended pacing of instruction to ensure automaticity.

Activity READirectTo ensure mastery, a striving student’s responses in one activity creates a new path, with related content, in a different activity. This active personalization reinforces skill development in real time and prevents students from continuing to struggle or being moved ahead without a solid foundation.

Reading READirectA Reading READirect is activated to move students ahead or back along the book path of the 85 carefully sequenced ebooks. Accelerations and interventions are based on a student’s grade level combined with his or her average scores across multiple ebooks and activities, at key text milestones.

Deepen Student Vocabulary & Reading Comprehension

Placement ActivityAt the beginning of each theme, students demonstrate their existing knowledge of vocabulary to determine the text level at which they will be placed: grade level or simplified.

Fiction and Non-fiction PassagesEach student has his or her very own "Book Nook" with fiction and non-fiction passages that are unique to each theme and grade level.

Megacluster ActivityIn the "MegaSort" activity, students learn how some words naturally cluster together and have strong semantic ties.

Vocabulary Skill ActivitiesEach theme approaches the word list from a different angle, teaching a variety of vocabulary skills through exciting and imaginative activities.

Scholastic Words Open Reading Doors (W.O.R.D.) builds a solid foundation of core words so students can boost their vocabulary skills and develop a deeper understanding of how words connect to bigger concepts and ideas.

W.O.R.D. vocabulary instruction is presented in short 20-minute sessions in a game-based environment that is personalized and includes built-in dictionaries, and full audio support. Teachers can track student progress and levels online.
