About Duke TIP

The Duke TIP MissionBuilding on a rich history dating back to 1980, the Duke University Talent Identification Program is dedicated to being a global leader in identifying academically talented students and providing innovative programs to support the development of their optimal educational potential. Programs for students, families, and educators will be of such excellence that they will become models for the education of academically talented students worldwide.

TIP in India Philosophy and BenefitsThe Duke TIP in India Summer Studies Program offers superb academic opportunities and dynamic residential and social experiences. The three-week session of 38 hours of class each week is intense and demanding; students are challenged to think critically about themselves and their world.

The Duke TIP ExperienceWe are delighted that you have chosen to spend part of your summer with Duke TIP, and we eagerly anticipate your arrival. Our students consistently say that the program changes their lives in many positive ways and that friendships with fellow students are significant and enduring. The Duke TIP in India Summer Studies Program is a holistic academic and residential experience, and students are encouraged to participate fully.

We understand that attending Duke TIP classes with students of similar academic abilities may initially seem intimidating to students who have always been at the top of their class. Duke TIP strives to make this academic environment supportive and non-competitive, and our staff will work diligently with students to provide a meaningful and successful growth experience. Duke TIP is committed to a non-graded policy for all coursework. We encourage students to measure success by their individual efforts and progress over the three-week period rather than by the achievement of a certain grade.

Residential life at Duke TIP is a critical component of the Duke TIP in India experience. Students will interact in a social setting with other academically talented peers from many different cities and backgrounds. Students will live alongside other students in the residence halls, participate in athletic and recreational activities together, and develop enduring friendships.

The On-Site OfficeThere is a centrally located Duke TIP on-site office on the Infosys campus where students can go for information and answers to their questions. It will be staffed at various times of the day when students are not in class and might need assistance. Families will be provided with contact information for the program upon arrival on campus in case a family needs to reach their student in case of an emergency.

On-Site TIP in India StaffWhen students arrive on campus, they will find a wide array of staff members who will help them have a positive experience at Duke TIP. These positions are described below.

On-Site Director The Duke TIP in India site is managed by an on-site director who supervises the academic and residential staffs, addresses student behavioral concerns, and oversees student social and recreational activities. The on-site director lives on campus alongside Duke TIP students and staff. The on-site director has received special training and maintains daily contact with the Duke TIP main office at Duke University.

Residence Life Coordinator The Residence Life Coordinator assists the on-site director with daily program operations by directly supervising the Residential Counselors. The residence life coordinator organizes student housing, leads residential staff training sessions, creates weekly and daily duty schedules, and coordinates the planning of social and recreational activities for students.

Academic Coordinator The academic coordinator assists and supervises the Instructional Staff, serves as head of academic affairs, and monitors students’ progress. The Academic Coordinator serves as the liaison between the instructors, teaching assistants, and the Duke TIP Main Office.

InstructorsInstructors at the Duke TIP in India Program are diverse and talented individuals who embrace their role in the academic development of young scholars. As accomplished college and university instructors or exceptional graduate students enrolled in master’s or doctoral programs, they are selected for their expertise in their field of study.

Each instructor is directly responsible for a class of 16-20 students. The instructor plans and conducts each day’s academic activities, monitors each student’s progress, supervises the teaching assistant, and enforces classroom behavioral guidelines.

Teaching Assistant Teaching assistants are chosen from a competitive pool of candidates and may be outstanding college students. They help the instructor prepare the course materials, and work with students in the classroom. Teaching assistants also supervise evening study sessions.

Residential CounselorA staff of residential counselors is chosen from a large group of outstanding undergraduate and graduate students in a competitive application and interview process. The residential counselors live in the residence halls with the students, organize social and recreational activities, serve as role models, and enforce Duke TIP behavioral guidelines. Each residential counselor supervises a group of 10-12 students.

Academic Life

5

Academic LifeCourse OfferingsDuke TIP courses embrace the educational philosophy that all students deserve to be challenged. Students spend 38 hours a week in class. Moreover, classroom instruction and activities are developed to engage students in high-level critical thinking, reasoning, and discussion. Instructors evaluate students using educationally appropriate and innovative criteria such as journal writing, presentations, individual research, and class projects. Duke TIP does not assign letter or numeric final grades. The non-graded approach encourages a less competitive environment in which students will become comfortable taking intellectual risks that they might avoid in a stressful grade-driven environment.

In 2012, Duke TIP will offer six courses:

• Design Challenges: Physics & Engineering

• Cryptography, Codebreaking, and the Mathematics of Spying

• Forensic Science (2 sections)

• Entrepreneurial Leadership

• Myths and Legends

Evaluation at Duke TIPRubric EvaluationsThe rubric evaluation indicates the student’s performances in such areas as intellectual processes, work habits, peer interactions, and products generated in the course such as tests, essays, and visual projects. At the beginning of the course, the instructor discusses the rubric form with the class so that each student fully understands these academic expectations.

At the end of the term, instructors complete rubric evaluation forms to assess each student’s performance. During the final class session, each student will review his or her completed rubric evaluation and may discuss any questions with the instructor. Students receive evaluations along with a course description and syllabus. Duke TIP recommends that parents and students file these evaluations for future reference as Duke TIP cannot guarantee that copies can be mailed at a later date.

Student ScheduleStudents will be in class Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., with a one-hour break for lunch. Teaching Assistants will lead one-hour study sessions each evening to review course material covered during the day.

On weekends, class is held Saturday afternoons from 1-4 p.m. Saturday mornings, evenings, and Sundays are reserved for recreational activities and relaxation.

During free time, students will be supervised by residential staff. Duke TIP students must remain within the defined program boundaries and may not leave campus at any point during the program, except under the direct supervision of Duke TIP staff.

Residential LifeOutside of ClassOutside the rigorous classroom atmosphere, students need time to decompress and make new friends in a variety of social and recreational settings. This opportunity to socialize and form bonds strengthens the Duke TIP community both in and out of the classroom and results in lifelong friendships.

Duke TIP in India students experience a structured version of university life. Students and staff live on campus in a dormitory and follow carefully planned daily and weekly schedules. Monday through Saturday class meetings are complemented by evening and weekend activities that allow students more active and creative options, as well as quiet time for relaxation and having fun with new friends.

Evening ActivitiesThe residential counselors plan a wide variety of weeknight evening activities that appeal to the many different interests of students. No academic work is expected during activity times. Activities may include sports (i.e. ultimate frisbee and cricket), dance lessons, group craft projects, and quiet reading time. Students may not remain in their rooms or in any unsupervised area during activities.

Weekend Campus-wide EventsDuring the weekend, students participate in large campus-wide events and trips, including field day activities, tournaments, a talent show and dances.

Free TimeAlthough much of the day is devoted to class and planned activities, Duke TIP understands that most students appreciate and need a break. Students have periods of free time each weekday, as well as on Sundays. During these times, students are encouraged to relax, read quietly, or spend time with their friends within program boundaries and with staff supervision.

Campus Facilities HousingOne goal of the Duke TIP experience is to give students the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds. Learning to live with others is an important component of this experience. Students will share a room with one other student or have their own room and are housed in a dormitory on the Infosys campus. Participants will be organized into same gender residential groups of approximately 10-12 students. Some of our students may have to live on the same floor in the dormitory with members of the opposite gender; however, the students will use same-gender bathroom facilities. Each group will be under the supervision of a residential counselor of the same gender.

During free times, Duke TIP students may visit the residence hall rooms of members of the same gender, but the door must be left completely open and the lights must be on when guests are in the room. Students may not visit the residence hall rooms of members of the opposite gender. Violation of this policy may be grounds for dismissal from the program.

KeysAt check-in, students will be issued a room key and lanyard to hold their key. Students should keep their rooms locked at all times. Neither Duke TIP nor Infosys is responsible for lost or stolen personal items. If a room key is lost, the student must immediately report the loss to his/her residential counselor.

DiningStudents eat their meals in a campus dining hall with staff. Meals are cafeteria-style. All meals are vegetarian; non-vegetarian options may be available.

Campus SecurityThe Infosys Mysore Campus is a gated campus and security guards are posted 24-hours a day, 7 days a week.

Computer LabsStudents will have access to computers for class-related research. Access to e-mail may be available on a limited basis during free time, but students should not expect to be able to check e-mail daily. Duke TIP students should not bring a personal computer to the Infosys campus. Duke TIP is not responsible for the loss or theft of any personal property.

LaundryCoin-operated washers and dryers are available on the Infosys Campus. Duke TIP residential counselors will be glad to provide instructions on the use of the machines; however, Duke TIP staff will not cover the cost of students’ laundry.

Mail ServiceThe residential counselors distribute incoming mail. Families will be provided with contact information for their student upon check-in. If you do send mail to your student, please send it before the last week of the program. Duke TIP does not accept responsibility for lost mail and will not forward mail after the program ends.

Mobile PhonesThe daily schedule (see page 4) offers a clear picture of students’ daily life at Duke TIP. The day begins early, and students are busy until time for lights-out at 10:45 p.m. There is very little time for a student to call home, and students are often too involved in activities to remember to call. Though we ask residential counselors to remind students to call home, please remember that if a student does not call, it usually means that he or she is busy, engaged, and happy.

If you would like for your child to call home during the program, please send him or her with a mobile phone. However, students may use their mobile phones only during designated times. For more information regarding the mobile phone policy, please refer to the Phones and Personal Electronics policy on page 8. If a student does not adhere to the policy, his/her phone will be confiscated for the remainder of the program.

Expectations & Policies

7

Expectations & PoliciesDuke TIP Community StandardThe Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) sets high academic and social standards for all students. The following Community Standard has been developed to ensure that each student understands the level of behavior that will be expected of him/her while in attendance at the Duke TIP in India Program.

• I will take full advantage of the academic and social opportunities provided by Duke TIP. I will apply myself to the best of my ability in my studies and participate fully in social activities and Duke TIP community life.

• I will not lie, cheat, plagiarize, or steal in my academic and social endeavors, nor will I support the actions of those who do.

• I understand that Duke TIP policies have been developed to promote the safety and enjoyment of the program for all participants. I will adhere to these policies and follow the direction of Duke TIP staff members.

• I will be honest, responsible, and fair in all my activities as a Duke TIP participant. I will conduct myself in a manner that is respectful of other students, Duke TIP staff, and the staff and property of the host site. I understand that harassment, intimidation, and bullying will not be tolerated.

• I will share in the responsibility of maintaining an environment where individual actions do not violate the integrity of the community. I will accept responsibility for my own actions and accept the consequences of those actions.

• I will view Duke TIP as a community and will recognize the commonalities and respect the differences that make each student unique. I will abide by Duke University’s nondiscrimination policy regarding race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, and gender.

Non-Discrimination PolicyAs stated in the Community Standard, students at all Duke TIP sites are expected to abide by Duke University’s Non-Discrimination Policy. This policy states:

Duke University does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin, disability, sexual orientation or preference, gender, or age in the administration of educational policies, admission policies, financial aid, employment, or any other university program or activity. It admits qualified students to all rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students. The university also does not tolerate harassment of any kind.

Further information, as well as the complete text of Duke University’s harassment policy, may be found at www.duke.edu/web/equity

Academic and Social DisciplineAny student who demonstrates inappropriate or disrespectful academic or social behaviors will be required to meet with Duke TIP staff members to discuss the situation. If improper behavior continues, the program on-site director will meet with the student and contact the student’s parents, if necessary. If a student’s behavior continues to be inappropriate, the student may be asked to leave the program.

Prohibited ItemsDuke TIP reserves the right to confiscate prohibited items for the duration of the program. Duke TIP cannot assume responsibility for loss or damage to confiscated items. Possession or use of certain prohibited items may result in dismissal from the program. Students are not to bring the following items to the Duke TIP:

• Alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs• Weapons of any kind•  Tobacco products, matches, lighters, candles, incense,

fireworks•  Cars, motorcycles, bicycles, scooters, skateboards, roller

blades, or similar items• Pets of any kind• Refrigerators, cooking appliances, or television•  Large stereo equipment (iPods, mp3 players, and CD Discman

are allowed)•  Fantasy games, trading card games, or hand-held or

computerized based games such as Nintendo DS, or electronic games of any type

• Portable DVD players, personal computers or Walkie Talkies

Prohibited ActivitiesIn a program as brief and intense as Duke TIP, it is important that behavioral matters be addressed promptly and decisively. While most student behavioral concerns are resolved through meetings with or intervention by Duke TIP staff, certain actions by students constitute clear-cut and serious violations of program policies and, in some cases, campus regulations.

Dress CodeAs guests on the Infosys campus, students are asked to wear comfortable, lightweight shorts, pants and short-sleeved shirts or saris during class time in the academic buildings. Students will do a lot of walking on campus and should bring comfortable, closed-toed shoes. For recreational and athletic activities, students should bring shorts, T-shirts, and closed-toe shoes with non-marking soles.

Visitors & Off-Campus VisitsTo take full advantage of Duke TIP, students are expected to remain on campus for the full session to participate in all academic and residential activities and to interact with other students. Duke TIP discourages family and friends from making visits to campus and from taking students off campus, as this can diminish the program experience and can exacerbate feelings of homesickness. For the safety of students, staff members are trained to keep individuals not associated with the program away from Duke TIP participants.

However, Duke TIP does recognize that for many students, this may be the first time they are away from home for several weeks. To accommodate parents’ request to visit their child during the program, we will offer parents or guardians the opportunity to take their child off campus on Saturday, May 20 or Saturday, May 27 from 4-6 p.m.

Duke TIP will accommodate visits under the following conditions:•  Any planned visitors, including parents or guardians, must be

listed on the off-campus permission form;•  The visitor must be at least 21 years of age and have a driver’s

license or other photo identification;•  The visitor must check into the Main Gate at Infosys GEC so

the student can sign out in the presence of a Duke TIP staff member and sign in upon return;

•  Students may not invite friends or family to join them on campus and may not have overnight guests.

Phone and Personal ElectronicsDuke TIP allows students to bring mobile phones, music players, and cameras. While these devices may be a part of students’ daily routines, they may also discourage students from taking full advantage of the Duke TIP program, as outlined in the Duke TIP Community Standard. Our philosophy is that of full immersion, and to ensure these devices do not hinder students’ full participation in the program, we only allow the use of electronic devices and mobile phones during specific times. Students may carry their mobile phones with them at all times; however, they must be kept in the “off” mode outside of designated times.

Student Health & Safety

Student Health & Safety

Students may use their mobile phones and other electronic devices during the following designated times on weekdays:

• 7-7:45 a.m.• 4:30-5 p.m.• 10-10:30 p.m.

On weekends, students will be involved in residential activities in the afternoons, but they will be able to use their phones from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday in addition to the early morning and evening times.

Duke TIP cannot guarantee cell phone service within the residence halls at the program site. Please check with your service provider for information about coverage in Mysore.

Duke TIP will not assume responsibility for students’ personal electronic devices, which include but are not limited to cell phones, cell phone bills, lost or stolen electronics. Please see “Damages and Charges” for more information.

Duke TIP views the use of personal electronics as a privilege. If a student does not adhere to the policy listed above, the device will be confiscated for the remainder of the term and parents will be notified about the loss of this privilege. Please provide your students with a prepaid calling card in the event that his or her cellphone is confiscated.

Damages and ChargesStudents are expected to treat property with respect. Any damages to Duke TIP or Infosys campus property that are caused by a student will be billed to the student’s family. Residence hall rooms are inspected before and after each session. In cases where damage to a shared residence hall room is not attributable to

one student, the charge will be divided between both families. Students with outstanding bills for damaged or lost property, including library books, keys, and conference cards, will be prevented from enrolling in future Duke TIP programs. Students are responsible for their own personal property, and Duke TIP will not arbitrate disputes between or among families regarding compensation for lost or damaged personal property.

Medical FormEach student must complete a Medical Form and return it along with other admission forms to Duke TIP before the program begins.

Taking MedicationDuke TIP staff will not prescribe or administer any medications. Students are expected to take responsibility for remembering to take their medications according to the schedule required by a physician. Students will keep medications in their dorm room, but should let Duke TIP staff know if they have any medications that must be refrigerated.

Health Services and InsuranceDuke TIP will cover the costs of visits to the Infosys campus dispensary for illnesses such as the flu, common colds, sprains, etc. Duke TIP in India does not cover the cost of medications, x-rays, or visits to a hospital or emergency room. Personal medical insurance or personal funds are required to cover hospital, emergency room, or other medical care not covered by Duke TIP. If a student is injured and the parent does not wish to have him/her taken to the emergency room, the parent will need to withdraw the student from the program.

Page 10: 21117_TIP Student India Guide 2012F

10

Arrival & Departure DayIllness or Injury While Attending Duke TIP in IndiaIn case of an emergency, a Duke TIP staff member will contact a parent as soon as possible. Parents who plan to be away from home for an extended period of time while their child is participating in a Duke TIP program should provide an alternate number where they can be reached, or a phone number of another relative who will know how to contact them or can make a medical decisions regarding their child.

If a student is injured or becomes ill while at Duke TIP, the on-site director is notified immediately to assist. For an injury or illness that requires minimal medical attention, the student will be transported to the campus dispensary. For a more serious injury or illness, the student will be taken to the emergency facility of the nearest hospital. In that event, the following procedure has been implemented:

1. While a student is on the way to the facility, a Duke TIP staff member will attempt to notify the parent.

2. The parent will be called from the hospital and advised of the situation by medical staff.

3. When the student returns to campus, he or she will be asked to call home or report his or her condition.

4. If a student is not able to return to the program, parents or a designated guardian must arrive within 24 hours of being contacted by Duke TIP staff to pick up the child. If you will be traveling while your child attends Duke TIP, please designate a guardian who can arrive to pick up the child within this time frame.

Because we cannot predict situations that might arise, the Medical Form is essential. In case of an emergency, the Medical Form will be taken to the clinic or hospital as a guide for the health care provider. If medical or emergency contact information has changed since completion of the form, please be sure to provide Duke TIP with updated information when you arrive on campus the first day.

Emergency FundsParents should be aware of the status of family insurance deductibles and prepare their students to pay for emergency and other medical services not covered by Duke TIP. Parents may wish to consider providing extra money for student use in case of an emergency.
