ISOT/RG 2008

Sehr verehrte Kolleginnen,sehr geehrte Kollegen,

Dear Colleagues,

injuries are among the most underestimated dan-gers to health. Approximately 750,000 peoplein the US alone suffer from monocular blindnesscaused by injury. 90% of those injuries aredeemed avoidable, and epidemiological studiesin the past were able to present effective meas-ures for the prevention of those injuries. In thepast decades, it was thus possible to reduce thenumber of eye injuries occurring at the work-place, in traffic accidents and during sports acti-vities in a considerable extent in some countries, even though further improvement is necessary ona worldwide basis. However, a significant world-wide increase in the number of eye injuries dueto terrorist attacks and wars can be observedtoday. In these cases, ophthalmologists have todeal with new types of injuries (“laser weapons”),and must expect a possible mass occurrence ofinjuries, even in apparently peaceful countries. Thus, triage and psychological care of thevictims are completely new tasks that an ophthal-mologist is also confronted with. The dramaticdevelopments in vitreoretinal surgery can beimplemented only to a partial extent in manycountries due to very limited resources. Thisyields a great variety of topics for an internatio-nal exchange, so that everybody can learn fromeveryone.

On behalf of the International Society of OcularTrauma and the German Retina Society, weinvite you to Würzburg, Germany, from June 19to 22, 2008. The host will be the University EyeClinic, Würzburg, which in 2007 celebrates150 years since its foundation and is thusamong the oldest institutions of its kind.

We look forward to your visit!

Sincerely yours,
