Online Learning Programs Impact Bret Harte

By Ariella Katzman

According to Mr. Christensen, 8th grade math teacher, “If [the student] rapidly understands a concept they can rapidly continue. If they need to pause and reflect the computer waits as long as they need. If they need something repeated, it's usually a simple click of the mouse to see it again.” Another reason these programs have been so favored is the amount of student engagement. “Students using technology… makes [the work] fun for them, it is motivational and brings us as educators into the 21st century. Students are engaged and can really be held accountable for their own learning,” says Ms. Tapia. “Many of the online applications are interactive and engaging, so students actually enjoy doing the work,” says Ms. Harris, administrator and head of the English department at Bret Harte.

Mr. Christensen has been impressed by the increase in student engagement as well as quality work. “I have been very pleased as we have rolled out the use of Khan Academy because it has been much better received by the students than I anticipated. I hoped it would be a noticeable improvement in piquing students' interest over textbooks, but it has far surpassed my hopes.” He also added, “Another advantage of online learning programs is that in addition to the audio/visual being synchronized, the student many times is also interacting with keystrokes or mouse gestures during the lesson activity. This interactivity makes the learning much more powerful.” A third reason why the online learning programs that are being used are so appealing is it gives teachers the opportunity to use small group instruction. “This engaging, independent work [with the learning programs] provides more time for unique small group instruction. While part of the class is learning independently on computers, another group can be getting teacher led instruction. This gives the teacher an opportunity to provide more meaningful and purposeful instruction geared to the groups' needs,” says Ms. Colt. Students also generally like these programs and the use of online learning. 8th Khaliah Byrd said, “I like the new online learning programs. The learning programs online have increased my math [skills] by a lot.” It seems that students are beginning to prefer the online programs over other types of learning. I like this type of learning because people can go at their own pace,” says Eleanor Wikstrom, 6th grader at Bret Harte. “In a classroom, advanced students might get bored while struggling students might need help but are afraid to show it.” “I like online learning [more than other types of learning] because I’m already pretty familiar with the computer and by typing I remember the work,” says Khaliah Byrd. Although most things about these new learning programs are positive, there are some negative things too. Mr. Christensen said that most things have gone well, “but because [these programs are] so new, we are struggling between our district curriculum which was designed as a paper based curriculum and the learning curve of the technology. There is also a small issue with students being so easily tempted to drift onto unrelated websites. This requires teacher monitoring of each screen while also attempting to facilitate group or seminar table learning activities.” In answer to a similar question, Ms. Harris stated, “I'd say that one thing that has [been] difficult is learning how to integrate the technology into...what and how teachers already teach.” Eleanor Wikstrom explained what she doesn’t like about using online learning. "Being online doesn't give you the same thrill from learning something new as it does to be in a classroom and [being able to] finally tell your teacher 'I got it!'" When asked whether he had any plans to change what programs are being used or how they are being used, Mr. Hughes responded, “There will be constant change this year as we learn more and more about how to use the equipment and curriculum in the best possible way. Our plan for this year [is] to continue adjusting our new systems to make them better and better.”

Have you heard of the new Brazilian soccer star Neymar Jr.? Well, if you haven’t heard of him, Neymar da Silva Jr. is a Brazilian soccer player. According to, www.goal.com he was born on February 5, 1992 in Mogi das Cruses, Sao Paulo, Brazil. He is now 21 years old and has a bright future if he continues to play well. Neymar was recently transferred from Santos to FC Barcelona with a 6 year contract of 57,000,000 euros. Neymar doesn’t just play for FC Barcelona-he also plays for his national team Brazil. He is known for his acceleration, speed, dribbling, and ability to score with both feet. Neymar’s natural position is striker but he could also play winger. Before Neymar got transferred to FC Barcelona, he played for Santos FC and he made a lot of history with them. For example, Neymar got voted best young player of the 2009 Campeonato Paulista and the following 2010 Campeonato Paulista. He also was the top scorer in 2010 Copa do Brazil with 11 goals. He finished the 2010 season with 42 goals in 60 games. Neymar has received nominations for the FIFA Ballon d’Or, where he came in 10th place. Neymar has been compared to a lot of former players and some current players like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. For example fans and media have drawn comparisons with Pele, which called Neymar “an excellent player”. Romario another Brazilian player talked about Neymar. The former Brazilian player confessed that Neymar wasn’t as good as him yet. However, Romario insisted that it was too early for Neymar to be compared to him. “Neymar is playing well and will be a huge star in the future, but it is too early to compare him with me," he told Brazilian newspaper O Dia. “However, if he continues to play at this level, then, who knows, you could even say he will be better than me when his career finishes. Today he is not." Neymar da Silva Jr. is a promising player who can score with both feet, and brings danger into the other teams goal. He could end up being the best player in the world if he continues to play as good as he is playing right now.

The FIFA 14 video game was released on September 24, 2013. FIFA 14 is entertainment for the soccer fans because you can choose to play on any of the professional soccer teams. It also has a lot of different modes. For example, you can play Ultimate team, play online and against bots. When you play online or against bots it ranks you on how good you play. To rank up you have to get points. To get points you need to win. There are 10 ranks in FIFA 14.

FIFA 14 has a new game mode called Ignite Engine where it is more realistic in graphical and gameplay changes such as human intelligence to make players react more like how they do in real life. The game mode is only for people that are going to play on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Neymar Jr. Career Review

FIFA 14 is Worth Getting

NBA 2k14 is yet another basketball game made by 2K. There are still using virtual coins to buy attributes, packs, and other things in the game. The game starts off with LeBron James in the intro talking about how he got where he is in his career. It shows you some of the gameplay and some of his gameplay highlights. After the intro the game takes you into the main menu where you can choose what mode to play like my team, my career, etc. Will the game be a total steal or would you just want your money back after? Let’s find out. with this game. Unlike last year’s game you can actually block LeBron’s shots when he tries to head for the rim. The other thing that I liked about the game is the character designs. The players in the game actually look like themselves. LeBron James actually looks like Lebron James. The last thing I really like is the my team mode has really improved from last year. You get about 600-700 virtual coins per road to playoff game unlike last year’s game which gave you only about 250 virtual coins for playing a game. Virtual coins are in game coins that you can use to upgrade your my player or buy packs to help improve your my team. Even though the game had a lot of positive things there are still many negative things about the game too. First off, it takes way too long to find a game online or on my team. I don’t know if it’s just because it just came out, but they have to fix it soon. The other thing that I didn’t like was the fact that the pro stick is flashy pass. I felt like they had the buttons just right with last year’s game. For example while you’re dribbling down the court you might accidentally shoot the ball all the way down the court because dribbling and shooting is the same button. Even though 2K really tried hard to improve the game from last year’s game, they changed things that weren’t really necessary. I felt like it could have been the best game yet, but that just didn’t happen. I really wish they would fix the network problem before the next version comes out. I give this game a 7.5 out of 10 because it’s fun, but can use some improvement.

In FIFA 14, there are 60 stadiums, including 32 real world venues. A couple of new stadiums are La Bombonera in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Another one is Goodison Park, England’s first purpose built football stadium. Donbass Arena in the Ukraine

is the home of Shaktar Donetsk and it is another new stadium in FIFA 14. In September 10, 2013, two weeks before FIFA 14 came out they did a worldwide demo of the game on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows. For people that have a Wii, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable versions, you can only buy the video game in Europe and Latin America. The FIFA team has been working on making the game to make it feel more realistic by. They think if the game is

more realistic it will become more popular. They want it to be successful, so they can win a award for what they have worked hard for. In this case, they will succeed by getting paid with the money they make.

The Walking Dead Returns By Yasmine Saechao The zombie apocalypse comic book that turned into show, AMC’s The Walking Dead and it has returned on October 13, for its fourth season airing on 9/8c on Sundays. With 16.1 million watchers. The Walking Dead has taken over TV ratings - beating out NCIS, Modern Family, and even sports channels combined, according to Deadline.com I definitely recommend The Walking Dead for those who enjoy horror-supernatural shows because the show is all about survival, showing how the main characters have grown - adapting to their new lifestyles, and dealing with the rough struggles of life during an apocalypse. But not only does the group deal with survival, the group also deals with everyday, normal things - such as taking care of children, teaching school, and dealing with the losses of the people they care for. The producers of the show manage to keep a perfect balance between drama, romance, and zombie action. However, The Walking Dead is a bit unpredictable since the show is known for killing off even its main characters. Therefore, it’s best not to become too attached to a certain character. In The Walking Dead, there are definitely moments that are bound to keep you at the edge of your seat - with unpredictable writers, you never really know what to expect about who will die and when they will. With the new fourth season of The Walking Dead, the gory zombie show has returned better than ever - with more threats to the characters, more terrifying zombies - in ways that haven’t been seen before, new deadly diseases, and new enemies at every turn. “Its brilliant writing. This has gotta be the best scripts so far,” Norman Reedus, who plays the show’s famous redneck, Daryl Dixon talks to Falltv.com about the new season.

7 Wonders of the World: Pyramid of Giza By Myani Merchant There are Seven Wonders of The Ancient World. I think that the coolest one is the Great Pyramid Of Giza because it’s so incredible how they built it in the Ancient World and it still exist today. The Great Pyramid of Giza is located in Cairo, Egypt. According to travelchannel.com, “The pyramid is about 480 feet high and 755 feet long and nearly 2.3 million blocks of stone.” Khufu enslaved his people to build his pyramid. It is believed to have been built around 2560 B.C. as a tomb for the Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu, and likely took 20 years to construct. I think its crazy how thousands of men woke up every day and pushed stones for 20 years of their lives. The pyramid was built as a tomb for Khufu, a pharaoh during the fourth dynasty of Egypt. According to National Geographic, “The pyramid has three burial chambers. The first is underground, carved into bedrock. The second, aboveground chamber was called the queen's chamber by early explorers.” It’s really cool how back then they made burial chambers for the Queen too. I wrote about the Great Pyramid of Giza because it is really cool and I think that it’s one of the most mysterious of the 7 wonders of Ancient World. I love how it’s filled with mystery and is something to just sit and admire and wonder how they created such an incredible piece of history.

Fun Thanksgiving Activities To Do

Why People Love Black Friday by Ahnyah Shannon

Black Friday is one of the biggest shopping days in the world. It is the day after Thanksgiving, noted as the first day of traditional Christmas shopping, during which crowds of consumers are drawn to special offers by retailers. The website www.livescience.com summarized why the holiday is called Black Friday, “The reason you call it Black Friday is because you might think it describes the bleak scene of hordes of shoppers shoving each other aside to snag the last DVD player on the shelf. But actually it's because the day is when retailers' balance sheets supposedly move out of the red (accountants use red ink in a ledger to indicate losses) and into the black (the color of ink you want to see if you have a really high-paying job as a CEO).” According to www.businessinsider.com “Last year the total sales on Black Friday were $59.1 million in stores which is about $423 per person. Giant retail Wal-Mart ,said it had been its best Black Friday ever,” They release different items at different times to prevent overcrowding in stores. There are so many crazy stories of people dying on Black Friday all over the U.S. According to www.uncoveror.com “ The first known fatality occurred at a Wal-Mart in Secaucus, New Jersey. A woman repeatedly stabbed a man with a kitchen knife taken from the housewares section to prevent him from buying the last Xbox 360.” Another sad incident transpired at a ‘Toys R Us’. According to www.uncoveror.com “One woman bludgeoned another to death with a baseball bat over an American Girl doll. She was heard yelling at her victim, "Hasta la vista, baby. Black Friday is a really dangerous day but at the same time it is really amazing because you can start Christmas shopping early and you can shop while there are sales going on. Even though they have sales all throughout the year black Friday sales are the better ones to go to because they have better sales. 7th grader Asia Hardiman says “ I like Black Friday because I can get new things for low prices.” Ms. Gayle, Bret Harte’s front offices secretary said “ I like Black Friday because you can buy things for low prices that you can’t usually afford.”

Dr. Harte If you want to hang out with him, just ask him. You don’t just stand around and act like you don’t know each other. If he’s choosing to hang out with someone else then he really isn’t acting like your boyfriend. According to Mr. Garcia, we have to wear uniforms because when someone sees something they want they’ll take your things when you’re not looking like shirts, pair of pants, shoes, etc.(mostly likely during P.E when you change) It depends on what kind of situation people have/been/are in and if they grew up around violence then they’ll most like will grow up violent, if they grew up around kids bullying them they’ll be weak and insecure. Unless they have people motivating them to fight back then that’s something else. It’s the people around them that make them act they way they are. They wouldn’t be sharing secrets if you hadn’t shared them yourself. I don’t know why they do it but if you don’t want to have someone to know something very private then don’t share it. Most students that are given a lot of power take advantage of it and do something they’re not supposed to do so the teachers have more responsibility because they are more mature than students.

6. FAVORITE ALBUM POP/ROCK: •One Direction, “Take Me Home” •Taylor Swift, “Red” •Justin Timberlake, “The 20/20 Experience” Sylvia: I vote for the 20/20 experience because it has a lot of variety. Andrea: ONE DIRECTION! ONE DIRECTION! ONE DIRECTION! ONE DIRECTION! Do I even have to explain why? I mean, did you see my Halloween costume? (I was the ultimate One Direction fangirl!) 7. FAVORITE ARTIST RAP/HIP-HOP: •Jay-Z •Lil Wayne •Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Sylvia: I vote for Macklemore & Ryan Lewis because they rap/sing about important things like gay rights. Andrea: I agree with you, Sylvia. 100%. 8. FAVORITE ALBUM RAP/HIP-HOP: •Jay-Z, “Magna Carta...Holy Grail” •Kendrick Lamar, “Good kid, m.A.A.d. city” •Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, “The Heist” Andrea: I only know one song from “Magna Carta”, and that’s “Holy Grail.” I have never even heard of Kendrick Lamar’s album. “The Heist” should win because all the songs I’ve heard from it are very catchy and exciting. Sylvia: I only know “Holy Grail” too, but I know lots of songs from “The Heist” and I love all of them so I think “The Heist” should win the award. 9. FAVORITE FEMALE ARTIST SOUL/R&B • Ciara • Alicia Keys • Rihanna Sylvia: Rihanna is who I want to win, as one of our colleagues, Tana Strong said, “She is beautiful, I mean just look at her face.” Andrea: Rihanna should win, yeesss, Gaga yeessss. 10. FAVORITE ALBUM SOUL/R&B • Rihanna, “Unapologetic” • Robin Thicke, “Blurred Lines” • Justin Timberlake, “The 20/20 Experience” Andrea: I want “The 20/20 Experience” to win because the singles from it are nifty. I don’t want “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke to win because I personally think his two singles sound the same and that’s really boring. Sylvia: I fully agree that “The 20/20 Experience” is very nifty.

11. FAVORITE ARTIST ALTERNATIVE ROCK ARTIST • Imagine Dragons • The Lumineers • Mumford & Sons Andrea: I think Imagine Dragons should win because their songs are really good. Sylvia: But I cannot decide who to pick they are all such amazing performers and if I could vote for all of them a million times I would.

12. FAVORITE ARTIST ADULT CONTEMPORARY •Maroon 5 •Bruno Mars •P!NK Sylvia: I think P!NK should win because she can express her feelings like no other through her lyrics. Andrea: I guess it doesn’t actually matter to me who wins because I think all of these artists are amazing at what they do. 13. TOP SOUNDTRACK • The Great Gatsby • Les Misérables • Pitch Perfect Sylvia: I want The Great Gatsby to win because the soundtrack is amazing. The artists vary from Lana Del Rey to Florence and the Machine to Jay-Z which together makes the perfect soundtrack. Andrea: I don’t think I’m the right person to ask about this since I’ve only heard the Pitch Perfect soundtrack. But when I have time I swear I will listen to it. Don’t hurt me Sylvia...Mamma Mia! Sylvia: Here we go again! Well The Winner Takes All! And Thank You for the Music! (These are quotes from the beloved band ABBA!)
