HE has no entourage, only a bike and his own company. But that did not deter Tim Vuyk to start an epic journey that will take him along the length and breadth of Southern Africa. He is a game ranger from a private game reserve in the Eastern Cape and has pledged to cycle 10 kilometres for every rhino poached in 2013. There were 1 004 rhino’s poached in 2013. Tim started the Tenzone Challenge on 1 July. He was in Lydenburg over the weekend and was on his way to Zimbabwe to put more focus on the plight of rhino killings. His progress can be tracked via GPS. He is aiming to complete the challenge in 8 months. DIE staatsdienspensioenfonds, onderwys pensioen en alle soortgelyke regerings-diensfondse is in groot moeilikheid. Die staat belê hierdie fondse in die een skema na die ander, wat misluk omdat hulle deur onbevoegde mense bestuur word. Kyk na Transnet se fonds, die beleggings in Sanral en African Bank ens. Hulle vou almal. Die regering het nie ’n probleem daarmee nie. Jou

loopbaan het in die apartheidsera begin en jy is glo nie daarop geregtig nie. Jy was glo bevoordeel. Die berigte oor onderwysers en ander s taa ts amptenare wat voor die voet begin bedank om hulle fondse uit te kry, is nie ’n gerug nie. Dit is die gevolg van die regering se noodmaatreëls en planne om wal te gooi teen hulle swak beleggings. Wat se wetgewing en veranderinge hulle ookal inbring, ek dink jy gaan verloor. Kyk na die grond probleem, waar hulle nou 50% van jou grond wil steel. Jy sal gelukkig wees as jy 50% van jou geld sien. Klink ek pessimisties? Of is my kommentaar

Me. Sannie en gesin skryf:Oom Petrus van der Merwe is op 10 Augustus skielik aan hartversaking oorlede op die ouderdom van 82 jaar.Ons sou die einde van die jaar 59 jaar getroud gewees het. Jesus het my met ’n besondere man geseën. ’n Beter man, vader, oupa en grootoupa sal daar vir ons nooit weer wees nie. Hy was gereed om te gaan, volkome verlos van alles wat hom gebind het. Graag wil ek elke persoon wat vir ons gesin op welke manier bygestaan en vertroos het bedank. Die Here se seën op julle afbid, elkeen wie teenwoordig was by die diens. Oom Petrus sou baie bly gewees het om so baie te sien wat die moeite gedoen het om teenwoordig te wees. Vir ons as gesin kan ek maar net sê ’n Seder het geval. Roelf en Annatjie du Toit skryf: Die Amerikaners maak daarop aanspraak dat hulle alles beter kan doen: “We're bigger and better” word dikwels gesê. Wel, ons sal hulle maar moet glo. Roelf en Annatjie se kleindogter, Naomi du Toit, word verdwerg deur hierdie “patty-pan” uit hulle tuin. Hulle woon in Pennsylvania in die noord-ooste van die VSA. Seun Roelf jnr. het twee bo-grondse hout kaste gemaak, met komposryke grond gevul en die skoondogter het allerhande groente daarin geplant. Die een op die foto word daar 'n “summer squash” genoem. As dit is hoe groot die “patty-pan” word dan wil ons nie weet hoe groot die wortels en aartappels gaan wees nie! Die oupa en ouma hoop om in September self te gaan kyk hoe die familie vaar met hulle “Kanaäns-groente”!

'n Bekende kabaret-ster het onlangs 'n paar unieke idees gegee om troues net so bietjie ekstra woema te gee. Meer spesifiek Nataniël, in die nuutste Sarie. Jare gelede het ek 'n epos ontvang wat hy kwansuis geskryf het. Ek het dit verwoord w a n t d i t i s e e n v o u d i g skreeusnaaks vir my, en wel, as Nataniël in Sarie kan skryf oor troues kan ek seker in my koerant in Hoorhierso.

Alhoewel daar hordes boeke en artikels oor hierdie onderwerp verskyn het, bly dit 'n kopseer vir alle betrokkenes. Dis nou troues. Ek het nog nooit, en sal ook nie vinnig die kansel-paadjie afstap met 'n hoepel-witrok nie. En omdat ek julle nie wil skietgoed teen my gee nie, hou ek dit vir myself. So dit is die idees wat ek wil deel:Die gastelys: Eerstens laat mens aspris 'n prominente familielid uit, tydens die nooi van gaste. Dit veroorsaak 'n geweldige bitterheid en agteraf geskinder en sorg dat die geleentheid vir altyd onthou word. Verander die kleurskema nadat die moeder van die bruidegom in kennis gestel is. Die feit dat sy dan heeltemal uitstaan en heeltyd snaaks aangekyk word, trek dus haar aandag af van die verrigtinge. (Onthou, sy verloor haar seun).Borsruikers: Vervang die tradisionele orgideë deur blomme van versiersuiker, veral as jy vermoed dit gaan reën. Dit sorg vir eindelose pret en hou die vlieë van die buffet af.Bestel loperige geregte by die caterers (aartappelslaai, slap hoederpastei en trifle, bly treffers). Dit verhoed dat bejaardes en minder gegoede kollegas kos in hulle handsakke laai.Hou die onthaal in 'n saal met 'n verhoog en sluit die aand af met karaoke. Sodoende ontaard die geleentheid in 'n platvloerse affêre en bespaar jy die onkoste van 'n going-away uitrusting - wie gaan notice?Plaas groot hoeveelhede goedkoop vonkelwyn vooraf op die tafels en gaan neem foto's vir ure in die munisipaliteit se tuin. Sodoende is almal vroeg al gekoring en maak dit die seremoniemeester baie meer draaglik. Ten Laaste: Nooi altyd mense met kinders, dit bly die simbool van vrugbaarheid. Huur 'n springkasteel en plaas dit direk agter die bruidstafel, die op-en-af-gespring en aanhoudende gegil bespaar jou die koste van 'n orkes en lei tot volgehoue opwinding (veral met 'n paar beserings).

Die hospitaalterrein wat grens aan Viljoenstraat is op Woensdag 13 Augustus afgebrand. Die reuse rookwolke wat oor dié deel van die dorp gehang het, het menige inwoner ontstel. Hierdie deel van die terrein, wat alom as “Wes Transvaal” by oud-werkers van die hospitaal bekend gestaan het, was destyds deel van die pragtige tuine van die hospitaal en dié gras is altyd kort en netjies gesny.

A group of media representatives from various newspapers, across the length and breadth of Mpumalanga and Limpopo, attended an Advert Design Workshop on 6 and 7 August at Forever Resort (Loskopdam) Middelburg. It was hosted by the AIP (Association Of Independent Publishers) and facilitated by Mrs. Amanda Thanasaras from Q Design & Marketing as well as Racine Creations (a Fine Art & Design based company). The two day workshop provided training in creativity, brainstorming and newspaper design in community newspapers. Judith said that it was very inspiring and it helped to make newspaper designers more aware of the different resources they can use. Newspaper designers are able

to maintain their creative energy with lateral thinking.We would like to thank the AIP for the opportunity and the Loskop Dam Resort for their hospitality.

THE all-new Kia Sorento has broken cover ahead of its Paris Motor Show debut in October. Going on sale next year, the new Sorento seven-seater SUV has been afforded a more powerful, squarer, upright tiger nose, but around the rear it appears to be business as usual for the popular SUV.

The design is clearly not an evolutionary departure from the current Sorento but the diamond-like detail on the front grille is new – and very Mercedes-Benz A-Class – while prominent fog lights remain encased in chrome detailing that replicates round the rear on other bits and bobs of the car. In profile the Sorento remains broadly the same except for a more prominent swage line low down across the doors.

As it is a practical seven seater, Kia has made sure to increase overall length by 95mm; the wheelbase also grows by 80mm, while the height actually decreases by 15mm. This should provide a more meaningful footprint on the road, more interior convenience for passengers, and improved dynamics due to the lowered roof line.

Kia say there was a strong collaboration between European, American and Korean designers to come up with the new look. All necessary drivetrain information will be released at Paris later this year when the car is officially

KTM’s 1290 Super Duke took the honours in the 2014 Pirelli SA Bike of the Year awards, with BMW's S1000R and R1200 GS Adventure the runners-up. The winners were announced on Friday (August 8) during the opening of the 2014 AMID Motorcycle Show held at Nasrec in Johannesburg.

As was the case in 2013, the competition was once again very close, with the S1000R actually being more judges’ first choice but the KTM winning on overall score. The award was the culmination of a process facilitated by Harry Fisher and Mat Durrans, the presenters of DSTV’s The Bike Show. Motorcycle manufacturers and importers were asked to nominate new-for-2014 models, from which nine finalists were chosen by the panel of judges.

The nine finalist bikes were intensively assessed by judges during a two-day stint in the Sabie/Hazyview area of Mpumalanga. The trip included urban riding, highways, mountain passes and even an off-road track for the adventure bikes.

JAGUAR has revealed the prototype of its ‘new’ Lightweight E-type – a further six of which will be built and sold. Jaguar announced in May 2014 that it would recreate six new 'lightweights', each built by Jaguar Heritage, part of Jaguar Land Rover’s new special operations division.

The automaker says each of the six cars will be built to a specification derived from the last lightweight E-type produced in 1964 and will be hand-crafted at the original home of the E-type, Jaguar’s Browns Lane plant in Coventry, England. The cars will be sold as period competition vehicles and all will be suitable for FIA homologation for historic motorsport purposes. Jaguar claims the new cars are the 'missing' six vehicles from the 'Special GT E-type' project, which originally started in February 1963 with the objective of building 18 cars. Only 12 of the aluminium-bodied lightweight E-types were eventually built and the remaining six designated chassis numbers having lain dormant, until now. The six cars will carry those original, historic chassis numbers.

The core component is its aluminium bodyshell. This material replaced the steel of the production E-type in the quest to shed weight – some 114kg were saved compared with the standard car. Everyone, when offered the chance to assist with this unique project, leapt at the opportunity. Some even have an indirect link with the E-type when it was new: one master technician calculated that his family – including his grandparents, his father and his uncle – had a collective 170 years' service at Jaguar stretching back to the early 1960s.

The lightweight E-type was powered by a highly developed version of Jaguar's straight-six XK engine which produces 254kW/380Nm mated to a four-speed manual. It uses chain-driven twin overhead camshafts and an aluminium head with hemispherical combustion chambers, remained highly advanced in 1963 even though it had first been seen in the XK 120 as far back as 1948.

TO coincide with the 2014 Ranger Odyssey offroad challenge, Ford has unveiled a new, limited edition version of the locally-built Ranger that will be available from mid-August until the end of September 2014. The Ranger Odyssey challenge in 2013 saw ten finalists setting up camp and driving in some of Africa's most gruelling environments. Contestants embarked on an action-packed cross-continent adventure, with only the toughest progressing to the final rounds. “We set out to find the hardiest contestants to take on Africa's most demanding conditions,” says Gavin Golightly, marketing manager at FMCSA. “We wanted a personality that was as tough as the Ranger itself.” In September, this year's Ranger Odyssey competitors will get to experience the most testing terrain that Namibia has to offer over 12 days, 13 stages, and 2,500 kilometres. One team of two people will each win the opportunity to drive an Odyssey Ranger vehicle for a year, along with a R5,000 / month fuel allowance.To offer Ranger fans the opportunity of having their own 'odysseys', Ford has built the limited edition Odyssey Ranger. Jaguar's director of design, Ian Callum, said: "With the lightweight E-type, our focus as a design team has been to ensure justice was done to the original work of Sir William Lyons and Malcolm Sayer. Meticulous attention to detail has been everything to us in re-creating this car, just as it is in our contemporary Jaguars.

"I believe the result is a new lightweight E-type that is as stunning now as the originals would have been when they were new.” Connolly leather is used, supplied by Jonathan Connolly with hides produced to the same specification as those used by Jaguar in the 1960s. This leather is used to trim the competition-type aluminium bucket seat base. The centre console covering is also leather, and there is a choice of seven trim colours, says the automaker. Interior trim is minimal, however, customers can opt for a more fully-trimmed car and the Jaguar team can devise bespoke packages. This may include door cards, headliner for the hardtop, removable custom saddle-leather floor mats, and a cover for the transmission tunnel.

STUDENTS and staff from Entheos woke early thon Saturday 9 August to attend the annual

Interhouse Sports Day. Our two teams – normally Reds and Blues were renamed this year as Rebels and Nerds. The cheerleaders and students spent days preparing their costumes and dances. It was a huge success as the Spirit in the entire school was very evident. After a full day of sport and singing the Nerds won the Spirit Cup as well as the Sport Trophy. Well Done, Nerds! Children were able to participate in more than 4 events and many chose to do all the field and track items, needless to say they were very tired at the end of it all but managed to see just how much or how little practise they need in order to qualify for the SACSSA (South African Christian Schools Sport Association) National Athletics event which is held in Pilditch in September this year. Coromandel Primary School from Lydenburg are the 2014 Provincial Champions of McDonald’s 14 Soccer Tournament. They participated at the Provincial Championships at Embalenhle Stadium in Secunda on 2 August. They represented Bohlabela District

where the four Mpumalanga districts, Nkangala, Gert Sibande, Ehlanzeni and Bohlabela participated. Coromandel played against Gert Sibande and won 2-1 and

proceeded to the finals and played against Ehlanzeni. They won with a thumping 4-0.
