To launch the first ever, Aberdeen Blues Weekend we have a special programme featuring one of Scotland’s all-time blues greats, Maggie Bell, and ex-Whitesnake guitar hero, Bernie Marsden.

Scottish blues-rock singer Maggie Bell first gained prominence fronting Stone the Crows and her raunchy, high energy style has electrified audiences all over the world in a career of 50 years. Amazingly, she’s still touring; constantly preaching the blues, with all of her powers intact, often, as tonight, in the company of a band featuring guitarist, Sandy Tweeddale. From founding Whitesnake to working with Joe Bonamassa, Bernie Marsden has been playing the blues for over 40 years from delta-soul steel to the electric blues rock, He is joined by the John Bruce Band.

“A melodic, harmonic and rhythmical swell that’s aesthetically pleasing and then some but also, in essence, just plain damned heart-lifting” (The Herald).

Pianist, Euan Stevenson’s beautiful, singing, piano playing and uplifting compositions, and Konrad Wiszniewski’s powerful, passionate saxophone and love of melody, have made New Focus one of the most popular bands in the country. Tonight, we hear them in their preferred format, with Andrew Robb (bass), and Alan Cosker (drums). Four of Scotland’s greatest musicians playing music that romances and thrills with equal measure.

The next big thing in Scottish jazz vocals, the classy singer hits the spot when it comes to Broadway songs, beautiful ballads, swinging jazz, and a host of modern pop tunes she has re-invented for this intimate jazz setting. With 2018 Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year, Guitarist Joe Williamson.

FRIDAY 22 MARCH 2019 6

Destined to be a Festival hit, this all-female traditional jazz supergroup make their Aberdeen debut playing fun, accessible New Orleans and Mississippi jazz and blues. Their repertoire consists of old American prohibition era folk, hot roots jazz, pre-electric blues, hokum and rather large nods to their Scottish heritage. The band features Ali Affleck on washboard and vocals, Ali Tod on guitar and vocals, Danielle Price on tuba and vocals, Kassandra E’Silva on reeds and vocals, Sarah Findlay on trumpet and vocals and Alex Stewart on trombone and vocals.

Blending homages to the jazz tradition with explorations of her African and Caribbean roots, MOBO-nominated saxophonist Camilla George has been dubbed “the Golden Girl of Jazz” by the Evening Standard. Inspired by contemporary jazz musicians like Wynton Marsalis and Kenny Garrett, she adds highlife, Afrobeat, calypso and hip-hop into the mix to create engaging, upbeat jazz.

Nordic jazz has many heroes, and foremost among them are bassist Arild Andersen and drummer/percussionist Paolo Vinaccia. Admired as pre-eminent jazz masters, both are associated with impressive jazz music that exploits overlooked possibilities and here they collaborate with Tommy Smith and the SNJO to tell new and original jazz stories spun around mystical Norse legends.

Inspired by the sagas of Thor, Odin, Valhalla the acclaimed orchestra will deliver a set of compelling and dramatic jazz stories. “A contemporary big-band triumph in its inspired arrangements, sensitive execution and transfixing solo improvisations …agile on the uptempo music and sensuous on a meditation, tone-poem atmospherics so widely associated with the ECM label“ (The Guardian on Arild Andersen with SNJO).

FRIDAY 22 MARCH 2019 8

Kenny Neal is the real deal. One of the leading Blues musicians of today.

Born in New Orleans, the guitarist/vocalist/harmonica player grew up in a Blues family with Buddy Guy and Slim Harpo as family friends, and his music is steeped in blues heritage from Delta and Chicago blues but champions the “swamp blues” from Louisiana that resonates with laid back New Orleans soul. The only UK date on his European tour is in Aberdeen! A special coup for North-East Blues fans.

And there’s more! Tim Elliot, founder and leader of Blues n’Trouble, Scotland’s leading blues band for decades, is performing in an acoustic trio. Tim’s voice and gritty crackling vocals will refresh some old school blues classics.

A special triple bill of blues Acts for the price of one!

Kris Dollimore is the guitar player with Scottish rock icons, Del Amitri, but he’s also one of Britain’s leading acoustic blues singers and guitarists, with a fabulous knowledge and deep respect for all the country blues traditions.

Joyously celebrating the trials, tribulations and fortunes of the best female singers of the blues genre, Queens Of The Blues tells the story of Mamie Smith and Big Mama Thornton; Bonnie Raitt and Susan Tedeschi; by way of Sugar Pie and Sister Rosetta Tharpe with a great band fronted by the irrepressible singer, Nicole Smit.

Gerry Jablonski Band wrap things up, playing high-octane blues roots with influences of classic rock. One of the tightest and hardest hitting bands on the current scene.

Paying homage to the brilliant, towering musical figure who through his singing and piano playing helped invent soul and R&B music. Aberdeen’s finest are joined by the Memphis singer and pianist renowned for mixing jazz, blues, soul, traditional R&B and popular music.

Armed with bona fide street credibility, having started out busking in Glasgow during 2014’s Commonwealth Games. This 8 piece eclectic modern soul funk band is packing out huge venues with their tight sound and off-the-wall antics – a strange mix of Lumberjack-looks, some of the best horn players in Scotland and ferociously funky music.

Pianist, Steve Hamilton, has performed in over 25 countries around the globe with musical luminaries such as Bill Bruford, Billy Cobham & Ray Charles. He’s an astonishing technician, a beautiful melodist, and an exciting improviser. Tonight he has assembled an all-star trio featuring the Grammy-winning Tim Garland’s saxophone which packs lyricism and power in equal measure and Mario Caribe’s Brazilian tinged Scottish bass.

A spontaneous standing ovation for a previously unheard jazz work would be worthy of note at any time. He’s also one of our foremost composers, and he follows up his “Hero As Riddle” triumph, with a new work inspired his passion for American novelist, David Foster Wallace. It’s a major occasion and he’ll have a crack band: Sean Gibbs (trumpet) Adam Jackson (alto sax), Martin Kershaw (saxes), Chris Greive (trombone), Graeme Stephen (guitar), Paul Harrison (piano), Calum Gourlay (bass) and Doug Hough (drums).

SUNDAY 31 MARCH 201922

The Swing era brought us so much classy music, from jazz to mainstream pop, from Glenn Miller to Duke Ellington; Frank Sinatra to Ella Fitzgerald.

Dave Batchelor, The Scottish Swing Orchestra and their dance group and live projections take you on a breathless race through the chronology of swing, taking you back to those times of extraordinary excitement and the pop music of the 1930s and 40s. The Story of Swing, a tale of musical legends recounted in music, pictures, words…and dance moves by the Flyright Dancers.

They are joined by stellar singer, Irini Arabatzi taking on the Ella Ftzgerald songbook.
