Dear Parents, Staff and Children,
House Swimming
Beautiful weather conditions
heightened the enthusiasm of all the
children from years 3 - 6 who partici-
pated in the House Swimming Carni-
val on Friday. Our newly appointed
House Captains led the way, cheering
on competitors and ensuring that
children were ready for their events
and that everyone was supported to
‘have a go’. A BIG thankyou to the
great number of parents who came
along to support and assist with the
smooth running of the day. Well done
to Boeing, who was the winning
house this year and special congratu-
lations to Ava Giddens and Angel
Vujasinovic who were our respective
girl and boy champions. Again, we are
extremely proud of the way in which
our students conduct themselves and
it was lovely to receive recognition
from staff at the leisure centre about
our exceptionally behaved and sup-
portive students. We now look for-
ward to the Twilight District Sports
on Thursday 23rd February, where
many children will go on to represent
our school.
Parent Payments for Excursions and Events
Parents are asked to be mindful that on all our excursion and in-
cursion forms we have due dates for payments. It is very im-
portant that parents adhere to these dates as we cannot accept
late payments. Under the Department’s Policy, we are required to
register all camps and excursions with numbers of students as
part of emergency risk management procedures. Bookings often
require groups to be organised and in some instances such as
swimming, instructors need to be booked. We will endeavour,
where possible to give families six weeks notice regarding excur-
sions, etc so please ensure that payments are made by the re-
quested date. Unfortunately no extensions or late payments can
be accepted in the future. As always, if families are experiencing
financial difficulty, please contact the office at the time of notes
being distributed so that we can arrange payment plans leading
up to the event. A more detailed note explaining this was posted
to all families today.
Collection of Children After School
We are experiencing a growing number of children who are regu-
larly not being collected on time after school. They are often left
waiting at the office until 3.50. The admin staff do not always have
the capacity to supervise these children. Parents need to ensure
that they collect children at 3.30 or make alternative arrange-
ments such as Out of School Hours Care.
School Council
We are still looking for parent nominations for School Council.
Please contact the office to collect a nomination form.
Junior School Council
Congratulations to our newly elected Junior School Councillors.
JSC plays a very important leadership role in the school, leading
many fundraising activities for charities and special events and
ceremonies such as ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. This year,
our JSC reps are Erik Cvetanoski and Chloe Webster in 5 /6 L,
Eliza Lee and Tyler Baba in 5 /6 G and Amy Quick and Cameron
Hildebrand in 5 /6 M. Well done to these children and also all
children who tried out for these peer elected positions.
Dogs in School Yard
For safety reasons we have a policy which excludes all dogs from
the school grounds. This includes dogs which are muzzled or on a
leash. Should you wish to walk your pet while you are collecting
children from school please make arrangements to wait for your
children outside the school grounds. Special arrangements how-
ever, can be made with teachers to have dogs and other animals
visit classrooms for special occasions such as the arrival of a new
puppy. In these circumstances, please contact the classroom
teacher concerned so that specific supervised arrangements can
be made. Thanks for your assistance with this.
Compass
Shortly families will receive initial information regarding our
move to Compass as our new communication portal for parents.
You will first receive your individual user name and password
and instructions to log on to Compass. We will transition to full
use of this platform over the coming weeks.
Wakakirri
We have a number of children from Years 3 - 6 enrolled in this
year’s Wakakirri Program. If you would still like your child to be
involved, please contact the office by Friday 3rd March.

Hello everybody (Konnichi wa こんにちは)、
Welcome to ‘Nihongo Notes.’ I’m the new Japanese language teacher and I’ll be teaching Japanese to the junior school (Prep to Year Two levels). I am very excited about sharing my knowledge with your children as I am passionate about language teaching!
In the early years, rather than focusing on language rules, the children will be learning language by learning Japanese songs and rhymes, playing games in Japanese, and listening to traditional and contem-porary Japanese stories. Repetition helps in the identification of frequently used words, simple phrases and non-verbal communication strategies used in greetings and other social interactions (e.g. bowing). The children will also be introduced to the writing system using a play-based approach that incorporates chanting and the use of mnemonics. One of the main aims is to engage the children in a new culture and expose them to the sounds and patterns of the language. This term we are learning how to say body parts in Japanese through action songs and repetition. We are also learning some fun facts about Japan as well as some simple greetings and classroom instructions. Please click on the picture below to hear the song “Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” that the children have been singing in class. If the link doesn’t work, just go to the following address: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98rDSRw7sv0
As a way of supplementing the learning that takes place in the classroom, I will be including a small sec-tion on Japanese in each edition of the newsletter. I invite you to take up this opportunity to learn Japa-nese together with your child. In fact anyone in our school community who has an interest in the Japanese language and its culture is more than welcome to refer to ‘Nihongo Notes’ and hunt me down at school if you need any extra support with your language learning journey. Enjoy!
The Sounds of Japanese:
I thought I would begin with an introduction to the main sounds of Japanese. This way you will have a better understanding of how words are pronounced when you read them in ‘Nihongo Notes’ in the fu-ture.
The Japanese language has five vowels: a, i, u, e, o -The letter "a" represents a sound like the "a" in "father". -The letter "i" represents a sound like the "ee" in "feet", -The letter "u" represents a sound like the "oo" in "fool". -The letter "e" represents a sound like the "e" in "pet". -The letter "o" represents a sound like the “o” in “on”. Some Handy Greetings
