Theory in the PreservationCf 2Q Century Heritage:Should It be different fromother periods of heritage?Pamela Jerome

bstractover 50 years separating the present from mid-

century Modernism, the period is experiencing a rewed appreciation and reevaluation. As an architect.ading a preservation practice in New York City, ouroroach to 20trcenturv heritage has been an interaionaI one, following the Venice Charter and the

\ara Document on Authenticity. However, in the US.:;pically. preservation equates to period restoration.stead, we have argued for progressive authentic

ity but many have countered that Modernist buildings are too young to have achieved this. Should a.,l:fferent se t of principles apply? Or should we lookat this period the same way we would look at anyother period, following the Venice Charters ArticleI P Is it more important to restore the architects intern? Or is Kevin Lynchs concept of the image ofthe city (substitute site) applicable, where the pubirs iconic image takes precedent? Does Modernismse\oerimental nature, resulting in material and system[uiirires, imply that these buildings should be treatedutierently? How liberal should we he in forgoing theIrjd-and-true philosophy of preservation?

    1. IntroductionAs time passes, what once was reviled becomesviewed from the lens of distance and takes on a nostalgic quality. This is now the case with Modernism, which evolved from the end of World War I. optimistically envisioning solutions to the problems of housing while expressing the new machine age. but bymid-century. became associated with urban renewaland the loss of historic urban fabric. The acknowledged failure of urban renewal and the rejection ofthe Modernist sle led to the short-dyed Post-Modernist movement, a style that discarded the minimalism of Modernism in favor of simplistically executedhistoric details. However, with over 50 years nowseparating the present from mid-century Modernism, structures from the post-World War II period throughthe 1960s are experiencing a renewed appreciationand being reevaluated for their cultural significance. Some of these buildings became instant icons in

their time the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, for instance. Others were respected at the time; thenquestioned Lincoln Center in New York City . S tillothers replaced beloved historic icons MadisonSquare Garden and Penn Station, also in New YorkCity. But all of them now deserve careful reflection
