20.1 EMERGENCY FLOTATION

This system enables the helicopter to alight on water, should this be necessarry, and to remain stable and a float so

that the occupants can be evacuate the aircraft. When the floats are inflated, this system can be used to land on a

runway or prepared ground. However, particular care should be taken and the horizontal speed should be zero when

landing in this way. The buoyancy of this helicopter is obtained with:

- sealed structural compartments that are considered to be permanent floats.

- floats that can be inflated with pilot-operated controls. These floats are foded in their containers, which are built into the

helicopter fuselage and contour its external profile.

20.1.2 OPERATION

The emergency flotation gear is armed when the crew sets the switch on the control unit to "ARM". When the switch is

in this position, the "12" push-button light comes on to indicate that the connectors are connected to the bottle heads.

Pushing the push-button on the pilot's collective lever grip, which is protected with a switch guard, once, starts the float

inflation process. This process can also be started by using the push-button on the copilot's collective lever grip and the

"1-2" push-button on the control unit.Moreover, if for some reason the crew is unable to use their controls, an immersion probe automatically triggers off this

process. The data signal passes through the relay card 13 Alpha and the flotation gear power unit supplies self-

sustaining power to the electrical heads of the two bottles.

20.1.3.1 INFLATION OF THE FLOATS

In the bottle heads, the current passes si-

multaneously through two resistors. A fast-

melting disc is then melted and ejected under

the pressure. The downstream chamber (A)

of the head is depressurized with respect tothe upstream chamber, which is at the same

pressure as the bottle. A differential piston then

moves and opens the bottle to the float distri-

bution system. A banjo union at the outlet of

each head directs the gas both to the aft and

to the forward float. The increasing pressure

in the floats opens the covers (press studs,

calibrated snap wire and plastic rivets). The

floats then inflate freely outside the fuselage.

A check valve on the inlet of each of the three

compartments of the aft float ensures that

each compartment remains independent.

20.2.1 ELECTRIC HOIST AND CONTROL UNIT

20.2.1.1 CONTROL UNIT

This unit automatically controls the operation of the hoist according to input signals from the hoist operator. It com-

pletes the hoist motor power circuit and controls the following functions: direction of movement, normal speed starting,

and automatic deceleration prior to the travel limit.In reponse to a shutoff command (from a control unit or from a hoist limit microswitch) it breaks the motor power supply

circuit. An overheating sensor cuts off the power supply when the motor temperature reaches 150°C. The unit also

includes a guarded switch that can be used to jettison the load by means of a squib-actuated cable cutter.

20.2 VARIABLE SPEED HOIST

When the helicopter is in hover, the hoist can be used to raise both loads or people. The hoist operator controls the

operation at the aft cabin door. The hoist allows to use harness, strecher or basket.

20.2.2 OPERATION

The pilot by means of the "Mission Selector" switch located on the 12 Alpha overhead panel, energizes the electrical

systems: power supply for the hoist, speed variation and switching and control of the cable shear

The control shear is protected by a cover to prevent all mishandlings. The cable is sheared by a squib which is

electrically controlled. The shear control electrical system includes normal and standby lines. Two indicator lights are

located on the front face. A red indicator light indicates an motor overheating. A green indicator light indicates the hoist

is energized. Two fuses are located on the front face control unit, they protect the control system.

The hoist operator lowers and raises the cable at the speed he chooses thanks to the portable control grip. The hoistoperator uses the following controls on the grip. A roller permits to change the moving way of the cable, this roller is

linked with a potentiometer to control the speed. A push to talk switch permits to communicate thanks to the intercom-

munication system. A "UP/OFF/DOWN" control is only used with the low speed

NORMAL OPERATION

EMERGENCY OPERATION

Both pilot (or co-pilot) and hoist operator can used emergency jettison controls, which are located on the collective lever

grips for the pilot or copilot or the control unit for the hoist operator If necessary, a manual cable cutter located on the

wall (aft of the door) permits the hoist operator to cut the cable.

SAFETY OPERATION

Microswitches in hoist assembly permit to stop the electric motor when the cable is entirely uncoiled, to stop the

electric motor when the cable is entirely wound and slow down the electric motor when the cable arrives at the areas

coming before the up or bottom ends of travel. A device monitors the motor operation temperature. If the temperature is normal, the red indicator light is extnguished.

If the motor heats, the control unit red indicator light blinks. If the motor temperature exceeds the normal value, the

indicator light is steady lighted

20.2.1.2 ELECTRIC HOIST

Basic hoist features include the following:

- electric drive motor (13) and double reduction gearing

- stepless speed variation depending on control unit output voltage

- upper limit, lower limit and intrmediate travel microswitches for deceleration to 1/3 normal speed before stoping

- mechanical brake automatically applied on shutdown or in the event of an electric power failure- cable guide (10) with instantaneous squib-actuated cable cutter

20.3 1600KG SLING INSTALLATION

This installation is designed for carrying external loads on a rotating load release unit slung under the helicopter by four

pendants. The load release unit rotary movements may be immobilized. A set of two external rear view mirrors enable

the pilot to survey the behaviour of the load and load release unit. One of these mirrors is steerable and can be de-iced.

The maximum underslung load weight is 1.6 T.

20.3.2.1 LOAD RELEASE CONTROLLED FROM A CYCLIC STICK

The pilot or the copilot presses the "cargo release" push-button on the cyclic stick. A relay closes the release unit

solenoid power circuit, via a work contact. The solenoid releases the locking system and the hook opens under the

weight of the load. The amber indicator light goes out. The load indicator red lights display zero. The suspension system

is returned aft, under the effect of the bungee cords.

20.3.2.2 EMERGENCY LOAD RELEASE CONTROLLED FROM A COLLECTIVE LEVER

The pilot actuates the trigger of the collective lever. A mechanism (1) which comprises several springs, applies a pulling

force on the release unit, the hook locking system is released and the hook opens under the weight of the load. Closure

of the hook is impossible. The unit mechanism maintains the load release unit cable in pulled position with a force

greater that of the hook return spring. A lever (2) extends perpendiculary beneath the fuselage and indicates that the

emergency control has been operated and inhibits the use of the installation. Once the control of the collective pitch

lever has been used to jettison the load. The unit must be reset before the installation may be used again.

20.3.2.3 MANUAL OPENING OF THE HOOK

The ground operator may unlock the hook and open it without operate the controls, simply by pressing the load release

lever to cancel the effect of the return spring (minimum effort 8 kg).
