TheAthle@cBandshaveundergoneitsshareofchangesoverthepastcenturyandentertainsoneofthemosteclec@ccrowdsinIndiana!Ihopeyouunderstandandappreciatethechallengesthatliebeforeus.Thisorganiza@onisundergoingsignificantchanges:andyoushouldbeveryproudtobeoneofthefoundingmembersofanewdirec@onofpride,execu@on,andphilanthropy.
Thestudentsandstaffhaveworkedtogethertoplanaseasonforyouthatwefeelisgoingtobefilledwithgreatmusic,greatmemories,andlas@ngfriendships.
Inaddi@ontoourongoinggoaloflookingandsoundingourbestaswellasperformingwiththehighestqualityeachandevery@meweassembleasagroup,thisseasonwewillworktowardsacoupleofgoalsthatmightbeevenmorechallengingtoachieve,andthatistobecomeanevencloserknit“family”andtoreallyfocusonbringinganewlevelofpersonalresponsibilityandownershiptothegroup.Asyouknowadiversegroupofpeoplemakesupour“family,”andwewillhavetotakecareofeachotherandhavecompassionforoneanothertokeepustogetherthroughthehardworkandchallengesthatwewillfacethisyear.

Dr.MaZhewSmithisenteringhissixthyearatButlerUniversityastheDirectorofAthle@cBands,whereheoverseestheButlerUniversityMarchingBand,BasketballBand,andUniversitySymphonicBand.Previously,heservedasInterimBandDirectorattheUniversityofTennesseeatChaZanoogawherehedirectedtheUTC"MarchingMocs"andBasketballPepBand,andconductedtheConcertBandandWindEnsembles.Duringhis@meatUTC,Dr.Smithwasatwo@meconductoroftheUTCSponsoredTri-StateHonorBandforhighschoolbandstudents.PriortohisappointmentatUTC,hewasanAssistantProfessorandDirectorofBandsatCastletonStateCollegeinCastleton,Vermont,wherehewasthedirectorofthe"PulseandPowerofVermont"SpartanMarchingBand,andtheSpiritBand.HealsoconductedtheWindEnsemblesandSpringMusicalEnsemble.
Dr.SmithreceivedhisDoctorateofMusicalArtsinConduc@ngfromtheUniversityofConnec@cut,wherehewastheAssistantConductoroftheUniversityWindEnsembles,[email protected]@meatUConn,hepremieredthe2009BigEastBandDirectorsAssocia@onConsor@umProject,"TornCanvases"byMathewTommassini,withtheUniversityWindEnsembles.Dr.SmithreceivedhisMastersofMusicPerformanceinConduc@ngfromWestVirginiaUniversity,wherehewastheGraduateAssistanttotheConcertandAthle@cBandPrograms.Inaddi@on,Dr.SmithreceivedhisBachelorofMusicEduca@onDegreefromtheUniversityofDayton.Followinghisundergraduatework,hewastheDirectorofBandsatCharloZeCatholicHighSchool(CharloZe,NorthCarolina)wherehedirectedthe120-membercompe@@ve"MarchingCougars"MarchingBand,andallotherinstrumentalschoolensembles.
Dr.SmithspentsevenyearsworkingwiththeFredJ.MillerSummerClinicPrograms,wherehefocusedoncurriculumwri@ng,stafftraining,[email protected],heworkedwithstudentleadersatcollegesanduniversi@esacrosstheUnitesStates.Dr.Smithisalsoasoughtaqerarrangerforconcertandmarchingensembles.Currentlyheiswri@ngforseveralensemblesacrossthecountry.Asanadvocatefornewmusicpublica@ons,Dr.Smithhaspremiered15newmusicalcomposi@ons,includingsixshortoperasinthreeseasonswiththeHarrordOperaTheater's"NewinNovember"series,wherenewtenminuteoperasarestaged,rehearsed,andperformedallinthespanof48hours.

Attendance Policy
GradesfortheButlerUniversityarchingBandclassarebaseduponara@oof50%punctualaZendanceand50%personalperformanceandposi@vepar@cipa@on.
Rehearsals:
1) Rehearsalsbeingpromptlyat4:45pmMonday,Wednesday,andFriday.AZendancewillbetakenbytheSec@onLeaders
2) ClassConflictsdoarise.Whenthishappensyoumustcompletea“CONFLICTRESOLUTIONFORM”andsubmititonline-nolaterthanthesecondweekofclasses.Dr.SmithandSabinMar@nezwillconsiderwhetherornottheconflictisacceptable.
3) Approvalmustbeobtainedpriortomissinganyrehearsal.Ifyouaregoingtomissanen@rerehearsal(foranyreason),youmustcompleteanexcuseform(ifpossible)priortomissing.Seetheonlineform.Again,itisyourresponsibilitytotakecareofthisprocedure.

Saturday Rehearsals
Becausetheseareextremelycrucial,thestaffexpectsevenmorefromyou;thegradingpolicyisdesignedtobeevenstricterthanforaregularweekdayrehearsal:
• Ifyouarelessthan15minuteslate,youwillreceive1absence.
• Ifyouaremorethan15minuteslate,youwillreceive2absences,andyourchancesofmarchingthatdayand/orafutureperformancecouldbejeopardized.
Performances
• Priorpermissionmustbeobtainedbeforemissinganyperformance.InorderforyourexcusetobeconsideredbyDr.Smith,youmustcompleteaConflictResolu9onForm.Youareaskedtocompletethisform2weekspriortotheabsence,whenpossible.Failuretocompleteaformatallcons@tutesbeingcountedabsent.

Personal Performance and Positive Participation
“PersonalPerformanceandPosi@vePar@cipa@on”isamoredifficultfactortoevaluatethanaZendancebutjustasimportant.Thestaffwillnotbeevalua@ngtheperformanceofonestudent‘sperformanceandpar@cipa@onleveltoanotherstudent.Whatisevaluatedisyourefforttomakeaposi@vecontribu@[email protected]@onsmadeduringrehearsals,inperformances,behaviorinthestandsandonthebusses,ontrips,etc.Mostofthebandwillgetthefull50%intheperformanceareabecausetheygivetheirbesteffortsatall@mes.However,thereareinstanceswhenastudentdoesnotsucceedingivingtheirbestandthefollowingoutlinestheconsequences.Thesestepshavebeencreatedtoaddressstudentbehaviorwithinthebandclass.Dependingonthenatureoftheviola@on,studentscouldbereferredtotheAcademicIntegrityPolicyprocessortheStudentConductProcess,bothoutlinedintheStudentHandbook.AllstudentsareexpectedtoupholdandfollowButlerUniversity’sRulesofConductasoutlinedintheStudentHandbook.

2. InaccordancewiththeUniversitypolicy,theButlerUniversityAthle@cBandsprohibitanytypeofhazingac@[email protected](andgivenanautoma@cgradeofan“F”).BecausethispolicyisaUniversitypolicyandnotjusta“band”one,youcouldfacedisciplinaryac@onfromtheUniversity.

University-ownedinstruments/equipmentareavailableforusebymembers$20perensemble.Pleasenotethattheindividualstudentisresponsibleforanydamage(beyondnormalwearandtear)thatmayoccurtouniversity-ownedequipmentwhiletheinstrumentissignedout.
