Dear IDFA Leaders,

We look forward to welcoming you to the Virtual Spring Meetings of the IDFA Executive Council and Segment

Boards taking place May 3 – May 5. For three days, we’ll take stock of our industry’s current position and the ways our

organization can best serve the continued growth of the dairy industry.

No matter the hurdle – societal, governmental, or environmental – our industry continues to grow, innovating our way

onto the tables of families here in the United States and around the world. In fact, Americans are consuming dairy at a

rate never seen before, and U.S. dairy exporters overcame serious disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic to ship

2.4 million metric tons of products overseas – also an all-time record.

Our resolve and resiliency have been tested over the past year. The COVID-19 pandemic shone a light on the areas we

need to improve upon, but it also reminded us of the value of working together to achieve success.

In just the past six months, IDFA and the U.S. dairy industry secured major policy wins. At our urging, Congress authorized

a dairy recourse loan program, preserved the ability of schools to offer 1% flavored milk, provided $400 million for a new

Dairy Donation Program, and authorized billions of dollars for purchases of dairy, fruits, vegetables and meat products

for nutritionally insecure families. It also appropriated $1 million for the SNAP Healthy Fluid Milk Incentive Program, $1.5

million for ice cream research, and maintained increased funding for modernization of our outdated standards of identity.

We’re now working to ensure these programs are implemented properly and that procurement funds are spent on

nutritious dairy products. The 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, finalized last December, affirmed dairy’s

importance in the healthy diets of Americans alongside fruits, vegetables and whole grains. IDFA intends to make sure

policymakers understand the science and significance of the new DGA report.

One year ago, we launched the IDFA People Strategy—a new initiative with robust programming dedicated to

developing our industry’s future leaders, improving our collective diversity, equity and inclusiveness, and sharing best

practices for managing our industry’s most valuable resource – its people. The People Strategy has taken off, and its

programs now vibrantly represent our industry’s collective effort to lead in these areas.

To help shape our future – rather than let others shape it for us – IDFA is focused on creating a new vision for the dairy

industry that prioritizes six themes that we’ll be discussing at the meeting: Global Competitiveness; Sustainability;

Industry Realignment; Innovation & Technology; Workforce of the Future; and Political Outlook.

To be sure, there’s a great deal on the agenda for our Virtual Spring Meeting, and you won’t want to miss being part of it.
