SCC – HVAC Student Handbook This handbook is for use by SCC HVAC students. It serves as a supplement to EICC’s Student Handbook which is available at https://www.eicc.edu/about-eicc/student-handbook/ . The EICC Student handbook contains information regarding institutional policies, including attendance, violations, prohibitions, liabilities, safety, and parking.

Program Mission The mission of the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) program at Eastern Iowa Community Colleges is to deliver high-quality education and training that:

• prepares a skilled Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning workforce • meets or exceeds the standards of the HVAC Excellence accreditation • provides affordable access to higher education • builds and strengthens our communities.

Program Description The Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning program provides all of the skills necessary to gain meaningful employment as an entry-level Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) technician. Students obtain extensive hands-on experience in the repair, maintenance and installation of a wide variety of heating, air conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation systems.

Students in this program test and obtain the following industry certifications: • EPA Section 608 • HVAC Excellence Employment Ready Exams in the areas of Gas Heat, Air Conditioning, Heat

Pump, and Electrical

Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to apply for the State of Iowa Specialty License.

Below are additional costs for HVAC students. All costs are subject to change.

Textbooks HVAC students utilize electronic textbooks through the Cengage Unlimited Membership. Students have the option to purchase this membership through the campus bookstore https://eiccbookstore.bncollege.com/shop/scott-cc/home?userId=-1002&campusId=65188 or directly through the publisher, Cengage www.cengage.com/unlimited/. Price may vary from each source; you can find the most current information at their websites. Print copies of the text may be available at an additional cost.

Tools and Additional Materials Students in the HVAC program must obtain the tools and supplies listed below by the third week of their first semester in the program. Within the first week of the program, there will an open house with a local wholesaler in which students will have the opportunity to see and test the tools available and used in the HVAC trade. Students are not obligated to buy tools at this event, but student packages and discounts are available.

Safety and Statement of Safety Understanding Below are the Lab Safety Rules every HVAC student is required to follow. These rules are also part of each course syllabi. Students are expected to sign a document acknowledging receipt, review, and comprehension of these rules.

EICC – Scott Community College – HVAC Lab Safety Rules • Safety glasses are required at all times in the lab. • No horseplay • Wear leather shoes only; tennis shoes or open – toed shoes are not allowed. • Wear appropriate shirts and long pants at all times. • Eating is not allowed in the lab. No open beverage containers, bottles or cans are allowed in the

lab. • Breaks are to be taken in provided areas, lounges or in the cafeteria – not in the lab. • All projects brought into the lab must be approved by the instructor. The type of project should

be consistent with current training or past successful completion of curriculum. • Toolboxes are your responsibility. • Report all injuries or open wounds to the instructor for first aid or possible referral. An incident

form must be completed for each accident. • In case of fire - - extinguish it if you can, use only the proper extinguisher. Spread the word so

that everyone can leave as quietly as possible without running. Reassemble across the street from the patio area in the grass.

• Only one person is allowed at the station when doing electrical lab or electrical competencies. A violation of this rule will mean loss of points

• DO NOT WEAR RINGS OR METAL JEWELRY in the lab. • Always think safety; you only have one life!

Emergencies Reporting If a life threatening medical emergency, accident, or illness arises in a classroom, call 911 immediately. Notify your instructor immediately. If your instructor is unavailable, call the college switchboard from any phone by dialing 0.

If you see an emergency situation in the parking lots, hallways, etc., a central location for reporting emergencies is the switchboard operator located in the Information Center, Room 2300 at the Belmont Campus. At the SCC Urban Campus please report emergencies at the first floor front desk or at the John T. Blong Technology Center - the front desk.

All accidents or injuries should be reported to college personal regardless of the degree.

Facility Information The HVAC program is housed in the Career and Technical Building at the Scott Community College Belmont Campus. Student access to the building is through Door A8. Students can park in the free lot (Lot F) while attending. See maps below.
