HISTORY OF THE SALVATION ARMY
William Booth embarked upon hisministerial career in 1852, desiringto win the lost mul^tudes ofEngland to Christ. He walked thestreets of London to preach thegospelof Jesus Christ to the poor, the homeless, the hungry, and the
des^tute.
Boothabandonedtheconven^onalconceptofa churchand apulpit, instead taking his message tothepeople. His fervor led to disagreement with church leaders inLondon, whopreferredtradi^onalmethods.Asaresult, hewithdrew from thechurch and traveled throughoutEngland, conduc^ng evangelis^c mee^ngs. His wife,Catherine, couldaccuratelybecalledacofounderofTheSalva^onArmy.
In 1865, WilliamBooth was invited to holdaseriesofevangelis^cmee^ngsin theEast Endof London.HesetupatentinaQuakergraveyard, andhisservices becamean instant success. This proved to be the end of hiswanderings as an independent traveling evangelist. HisrenownasareligiousleaderspreadthroughoutLondon, andheaSractedfollowerswhowerededicatedtofightforthesoulsofmenandwomen.
Thieves, pros^tutes, gamblers, and drunkards wereamong Booth's first converts to Chris^anity. Tocongrega^onswhoweredesperatelypoor,hepreachedhopeandsalva^on.HisaimwastoleadpeopletoChristandlinkthemtoachurchforfurtherspiritualguidance.
Many churches, however, did not accept Booth'sfollowers because of their past. So Booth con^nuedgiving his new converts spiritual direc^on, challengingthemtosaveotherslikethemselves.Soon, theytoowerepreachingandsinging inthestreetsasalivingtes^monytothepowerofGod.
In 1867, Booth had only 10 full-^me workers, but by1874,thenumberhadgrownto1,000volunteersand42evangelists, all serving under the name "The Chris^anMission." Booth assumed the ^tle of generalsuperintendent, withhisfollowerscallinghim"General."Knownasthe"HallelujahArmy,"theconvertsspreadoutof the East End of London into neighboring areas andthentootherci^es.
Boothwasreadingaprinter'sproofof the1878annualreport when he no^ced the statement "The Chris^anMission is a volunteer army." Crossing out the words"volunteerarmy," hepenned in "Salva^onArmy." Fromthosewords camethebasis of thefounda^on deedofTheSalva^onArmy. 7
Fromthatpoint, convertsbecamesoldiersof Christandwereknownthen, asnow,asSalva^onists.Theylaunchedan offensivethroughout theBri^sh Isles, in some casesfacing real baSles as organized gangs mocked andaSackedthem.Inspiteofviolenceandpersecu^on,some250,000peoplewereconvertedundertheministryofTheSalva^onArmybetween1881and1885.
Meanwhile, the Army was gaining a foothold in theUnitedStates.LieutenantElizaShirleyhadleqEnglandtojoinherparents,whohadmigratedtoAmericaearlierinsearchforwork.In1879,sheheldthefirstmee^ngofTheSalva^on Army in America, in Philadelphia. Glowing reports of the work inPhiladelphia, however, eventually convinced Booth, in1880, to send an official group to pioneer the work inAmerica.
OnMarch10,1880, Commissioner George ScoSRaitonand seven women officers knelt on the dockside atBaSeryParkinNewYorkCitytogivethanksfortheirsafearrival. At their first official street mee^ng, thesepioneers were met with unfriendly ac^ons, as hadhappenedinGreatBritain.Theywereridiculed,arrested,andaSacked.Severalofficersandsoldiersevengavetheirlives.Threeyears later,RailtonandotherSalva^onistshadexpanded their opera^on into California, Connec^cut,Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, MassachuseSs, Michigan,Missouri,NewJersey,NewYork,Ohio, andPennsylvania.President Grover Cleveland received a delega^on ofSalva^onArmyofficersin1886andgavetheorganiza^ona warm personal endorsement.
