Bobby Wallace was named Director of Athletics at the Univer-sity of West Alabama on August 3, 2018. “We are excited to announce the selection of Bobby Wallace as the next Director of Athletics at the University of West Ala-bama,” UWA President Ken Tucker said. “Coach Wallace brings a wealth of accomplishments at the highest level with him to UWA, and we are confident that under Bobby’s leadership our recent athletic successes will continue to grow exponentially. “Coach Wallace is a person of integrity, honesty, and character who has achieved unprecedented athletic success, while car-ing deeply for his coaches, staff, and student-athletes,” Tucker said. “We are so fortunate to have someone of Bobby’s national stature and impeccable rep-utation to lead our athletic program to even greater heights.” This is Wallace’s second stint at West Alabama. He served as the Tigers head football coach from 2006-10, laying the cornerstone for the success the program has enjoyed over the last few years, including three Gulf South Conference championships since 2012. “Sharon and I are very ex-cited for the opportunity to return to Livingston,” Wal-lace said. “First of all, I have to thank Dr. Tucker and the Board of Trustees for their confidence and support. “I am truly looking forward to working with this group of UWA coaches, athletic administration, Tiger alumni and the community,” Wal-lace said. “I have always said that the biggest and best asset of UWA is its people and I look forward to working with them.” During a 40-year coaching

career, 28 as a head coach in both NCAA Division I and Di-vision II, Wallace accomplishments include: three consecutive Division II national championships (93, 94, 95); 11-time Divi-sion II football playoff participant; GSC and Division II Coach of the Quarter Century (1972-1997), member of the Division II Football, GSC, Alabama Sports, and UNA Sports Halls of Fame; the winningest coach in GSC history (152 victories), National Coach of the Year three times, GSC Coach of the Year four times, and the only coach to win seven GSC Championships. Wallace’s three national championships tie him for the most championships by any coach in the division’s 39-year history. Those 1993-95 UNA teams put together an impressive 41-1 re-cord, making him the first coach in college football history to win 40 games in just three seasons. He was a multi-sport athlete at Callaway High School in Jack-son, Mississippi, lettering three years each in football, basket-ball, baseball, and track. He also earned prep All-America hon-ors before enrolling at Mississippi State University. Wallace was a three-year starter at Mississippi State as a de-fensive back while earning his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education in 1976. Sharon and Bobby have three children: Robert, Lindsey and Blake. The Wallace’s have four grandchildren.

and is set for her fourth season running the Tiger program.

During the 2019 season, the Tiger Softball program saw a return to the postsea-son for the for time since 2014 with a trip to the Gulf South Conference Tourna-ment while posting a 30-23 overall record and 15-13 mark in the conference. The UWA Softball Complex also saw major renovations adding stadium seating, a new press box and sound system under fundraising efforts by Dever-Boaz.

She has compiled a 311-358-1 record as a collegiate head coach and has a team 71-84 in three seasons heading into the 2020 season at UWA.

A collegiate softball coaching veteran, Dever Boaz came to UWA from Northwest Mississippi Community College, where she has served as an assistant coach for three seasons. Dever Boaz has 25 years of college softball coaching experience.

In eight seasons at Arkansas, Dever Boaz coached the Razorbacks to five SEC Tournament appearances and two NCAA Regional berths. In 1999, the SEC named Dever Boaz Coach of the Year after leading the Razorbacks to a 46-29 record and a runner-up finish in the conference tournament. She coached eight All-SEC players, one all-region performer and two NCAA regional all-tournament players at Arkansas. Her record at Arkansas was 244-274-1 overall, 103-135 in Southeastern Conference play.

Other Division I coaching stops for Dever Boaz include assistant positions at Virginia (2006-08), Florida (2005-06) and South Carolina (1993-95). She also coached at Magnolia Heights High School (2009-13), leading the the Lady Chiefs to five state tournament appearances and two runner-up finishes. She began her coaching career in 1990 as the head varsity softball and volleyball coach at Tu-lare Western High School in Tulare, California.

In 2007, Dever Boaz left the college ranks to coach in the National Pro Fastpitch League for the Washing-ton Glory. She guided the team to a combined 64-28 record over two seasons, winning the World Title in 2007 and finishing as runner-up in 2008. She was named the 2007 National Manager of the Year.

Northwest posted a 74-42 record in her three seasons on staff. In 2014, the Rangers set single-season school records in slugging percent-age (.492), hits (390), doubles (83), triples (22), stolen bases (143), hit-by-pitch (48), RBIs (253) and total bases (550). Boaz was recognized as the 2014 NFCA Assistant Coach of the Year in NJCAA Division II.

Dever Boaz played collegiately at Fresno State, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in health science in 1990. She reached the NCAA Women’s College World Se-ries championship game in three consecutive seasons and was se-lected to the all-tournament team twice.

She was a NCAA All-American three times while playing third base and pitching for the Bulldogs, earning Big West Conference Player of the Year as a senior after compiling a 25-6 record with 31 complete games and 155 strikeouts. She still ranks among the leaders in Fresno State history for various pitching and batting statistical categories. She posted an 84-12 pitching record with 56 shutouts and six no-hitters during her four seasons.

She was also a two-time Academic All-American and was named Big West Schol-ar of the Year in 1990. Dever Boaz was inducted into the Fresno State University Athletic Hall of Fame on Nov. 1, 2012.

Dever Boaz conducts international softball clinics in Holland, Canada, Italy and Australia for coaches as well as players. She has appeared as a feature speaker and instructor for various well-known clinics throughout the United States. In ad-dition, she authored the book “The Art of Pitching” as well as five instructional softball videos.
