    MINNESOTA MASK MANDATE

On July 25, 2020 Minnesota Governor, Tim Walz, issued an executive order requiring all Minnesotans wear a face-covering indoors. This includes all indoor businesses, including all printers. Workers must also wear face coverings when working outside when it is not possible to maintain social distancing.

In addition, all businesses must update their COVID-19 Preparedness Plan (www.pimw.org/covid-19-and-the-print-industry/#Preparedness-Plan) to include this face-covering requirement. Also, signs must be posted and visible to all people instructing them to wear face coverings.

Businesses must require all workers, customers, and visitors wear face coverings. The order makes no exemption for social distancing. Some people are exempt from wearing face coverings. These include:

    • When working in an area where there are walls of at least face-height surrounding the workstation

    • Eating or drinking• Individuals with certain medical conditions

Businesses may require a worker to provide documentation if an employee claims a health-related exemption for not wearing a mask. Individuals can be fined up to $100 for violating the order. Businesses can

have civil penalties of up to $25,000 per occurrence of violations, including up to $1,000 or 90 days imprisonment for business owners, managers, and supervisors.

NEBRASKA COVID-19 POLICYNebraska OSHA recommends that all printers in Nebraska create a COVID-19 Policy. This new COVID-19 template for printing companies in Nebraska can assist you. You can find the template at www.pimw.org/covid-19-and-the-print-industry/#NECOVIDTemplate. Remember, for the Minnesota printing companies, DO NOT follow this Nebraska template.

Stay in The Loupe - Connect with us!

2020 is the type of year that defines organizations. Challenges hit us like crashing waves. How do you hold up? How do you lead? Is your business model strong enough to sustain the damage? Is your staff? How about your client relationships? This is a time when you have to do more with less and rely on your network to support you and your business. It is in these sort of times where Stronger Together is more than a Printing Industry Midwest (PIM) tagline.

PIM is proud to be supporting its members in these turbulent times;• In March, we beat back an Executive Order that would have sidelined a

number of MN printers for weeks or months. We were grateful to be able to help spread the message that print is indeed essential.

    • PIM’s Financial Executives Council has been meeting regularly, at times with more than 100 executives grappling with managing their way out of the PPP quagmire.

    • Thanks to our Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) team, members have had access to critical information to keep their businesses and employees safe.

    • New PIM Leadership peer groups are meeting monthly, sharing ideas and strategies for managing in these turbulent times.

    • The MN and Midlands Golf Outings were wildly successful, connecting old friends and providing a much needed social break.

    • The new PIM Diversity Coalition is already working towards improving racial equity in print.

    • More than a dozen companies are exploring the new PIM Marketing Services. It’s in times like this, marketing opportunities like the upcoming PIM Print Buyers Guide can help you keep your foot on the marketing pedal.

    • The Star Awards, SmartCafe, Human Resource (HR) Conference and Women in Print events are offering considerable value and finding great support, despite being virtual-only events.

Throughout the pandemic, we’ve relied on each other. Thank you for making the Stronger Together real for PIM.

    Sincerely,Steve Bonoff, PIM President

  • 4The Loupe by Printing Industry Midwest

OUR FIRST VIRTUAL STAR AWARDSPrinting Industry Midwest (PIM) staff was asked to take a few weeks furlough over the summer. Yet, they have been asked to do more, not less during those months. PIM staff knows that is true for many of you as well. That is why this years Star Award Celebration was so important, we all needed to take an hour out of our busy day to give each other thanks and recognition. The 2020 Star Awards Celebration was not the event we envisioned but it was still a fantastic day!

PIM values recognition of individuals and companies for their outstanding accomplishments in the print industry. The annual Star Awards is a way for the Midwest Region to honor their commitment to quality and creativity. Each year members submit projects created in the previous year to be judged and honored. Members also nominate their exceptional employees. Then, the industry comes together at the spring banquet. Well, in this case a virtual summer event, to celebrate one another!

WE COULD NOT DO THIS WITHOUT YOUDuring the celebration we had the official transition of the PIM Board of Director Chair, Patrick McDermott, the 2019 PIM Chair, who showed true leadership over the last year. Thank you Pat for leading our organization throughout this last year. John Barnhart of Barnhart Press was introduced as the 2020 PIM Chair and he is eager to pick up where Pat left off. No one knows what this year will bring but we know print will continue to be strong in the Midwest.

    2020 STAR AWARDSPrint is Everywhere

    Held on August 25, 2020

4The Loupe by Printing Industry Midwest

Three members were recognized as they retired from the PIM Board of Directors this year. PIM appreciates and recognizes the time and leadership they have contributed to make this organization successful.

    • Lana Siewert Olson, Ideal Printers• Darren Carlson, American Spirit Corp.• Jayme Wisely

Thanks to the 2020 Star Award Judges (long-time experts) for taking the time and making some very tough decisions! Every year the competition gets harder, making their job more difficult.

    • Pete Rivard, Dunwoody College of Technology• Tom Herold, Dunwoody College of Technology• Aaron Roth, IPG• Patrick Redmond, Patrick Redmond Design

For the third year in row the Star Awards attendees were entertained by the talented and hilarious Justin McDonald from Cedar Graphics, our terrific emcee! With more than 21 years in the advertising industry, Justin is considered by many to be a one-man creative agency. Thank you Justin for helping create another tremendous event!

If you did not know, Justin is the reason we switched our event to virtual. His fear of bears left him unable to travel up to Minnesota to host the event in-person. Thankfully PIM had help from the 2020 Star Awards Sponsors, speakers and Justin, and together we were able to host the Star Awards event virtually! We could not have pulled this off without all of your help, thank you! Hopefully next year we can get the bears under control and have an in-person event again!

    Nick Stratigos, CAE1959-2020

Printing Industry Midwest (PIM) is terribly saddened to hear about the passing of Nick Stratigos. We send our condolences to Nick’s familyand friends.

Michael Makin Executive Vice President of PRINTING United Alliance, prepared this message about Nick...

“I am deeply saddened to share that our friend and colleague Nick Stratigos passed away in his sleep last night after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. He was only 60 years old. Our heartfelt condolences are extended to his widow Cindy and his children Melina, Lizzy and Erik.

Nick was a lifelong and proud Pittsburgher and one of the staunchest Penguins fans you could ever meet. He attended Duquesne University where he obtained a Bachelor’s of Science and Carnegie Mellon University where he earned a Masters in Finance. He was also a Certified Association Executive (CAE).

Nick began his career as a business manager with his alma matter, Carnegie Mellon. He transitioned to association work in 1994 and held senior finance positions with the Iron and Steel Society, the Pittsburgh Technology Council, Printing Industries of America and most recently PRINTING United Alliance. He was a past Chairman of the Pittsburgh Society of Association Executives.

Besides his love for hockey and other sports, Nick enjoyed dabbling in the theatre with his children and also did voice actor work. He was the proud announcer for the annual Miracle League All-Star Game. He also was an extraordinary stock market investor and led an investing club. In addition to teaching investing, he prided himself on beating the S & P 500 12 of the last 15 years!

Above all else, Nick was a devoted family man and, in the end, he was surrounded by those he loved most.”
