On June 22, 2020 the Miniature Schnauzerworld lost one of its greatest Ambassadorsand proponents of the Breed, Mr DonEmslie of White Rock, BC. Don was oneof my dearest friends, my mentor, myteacher, supporter and co breeder. Doncame into my family’s life over 34 yearsago when we acquired our first MiniatureSchnauzer CH Annfield Endless Encounter.

Don Emslie (Annfield Perm Reg) was a long time MSCC member. We extend our sympathies to his partner Tim Doxtater and to their friends and family.

Don remained passionate about the Breed right up until his passing and healong with his partner Tim Doxtater are known world wide for theirextremely successful Annfield Miniature Schnauzer family of dogs.Through their breeding program and later on their CKC certified judgingthey acquired many friends and acquaintances throughout the world.

Even though Miniature Schnauzer’s were Don’s number one breed, healways appreciated and supported excellent examples of all breeds acrossthe purebred dog world. One of his favourite sayings was “I always knowwhen I see a special dog when I get goosebumps”.

In addition to being a renowned breeder, handler, groomer and CKCjudge, Don was also a spouse, father, grandfather, uncle, friend, homerenovator, interior designer, potter, seamstress, landscaper, pianist and aone of a kind gourmet cook who never once used a cook book. Don coulddo anything he set his mind too with panache, style and excellence.

I feel so blessed to have known Don and to have shared a small part of hislife’s journey. I will be forever grateful to be a small part of the Annfieldbreeding program but most of all I will always cherish Don’s lovingfriendship. Any success I’ve achieved from my own Shantay MiniatureSchnauzer breeding program is in no small way derived from Don andTim.

HHeeaalltthh NNeewwssResearch Update: Testing for Food Allergiesby Cailin R. Heinze, VMD, MS, DACVNMarch 06, 2020

While food allergies (also called adverse food reaction or ‘AFR’) are uncommon in pets, diagnosing them or ruling them out completely remains a frustrating endeavor forveterinarians and pet owners alike. As the “gold standard” – an elimination diet and re challenge – is difficult and time consuming, many pet owners and vets reach for simplermethods such as blood and saliva testing.

What many pet owners and some veterinarians may not realize is that commoncommercial blood and saliva tests have not been validated – i.e. the results, positive ornegative, have not been shown to correspond to actual clinical changes in pets. Putanother way, it has never been proven that a positive test equals an allergy or that anegative test means the ingredient is fine for the pet.

While I have had many pet owners and veterinarians report that they see resolution ofallergy signs after avoiding ingredients for which the pet has tested positive on blood orsaliva tests, I’ve had just as many that report improvement despite being fed positiveingredients (often without the pet owner realizing that the ingredient is included incurrent food or treats).

Previously, while there was little data to suggest that these tests were effective toidentify allergens, there was also not a lot of published data to show that they *didn’t*work. That has changed recently with the publication of two studies that evaluated someof the most common blood and saliva food allergy/sensitivity tests for dogs.

In the first study, which was done in Europe, investigators compared a popular salivatest and a popular blood test in three groups of dogs – those with known food allergiesto identified ingredients, healthy dogs with no allergic signs, and dogs with suspectedfood allergies that were undergoing diet elimination and re challenge testing.

Between 20 30% of the healthy dogs had a strong positive reaction to one or morefoods, depending on the type of the test. Another 53% of healthy dogs had weakpositive reactions on the saliva test. In fact, there were more positive saliva reactions inhealthy dogs than in allergic dogs! Overall, the number of dogs with positive reactionson the tests was not different between healthy and food allergic dogs. Only 1 of thepositive blood tests corresponded to a known allergy in one of the allergic dogs.

In the second study, which was performed here at the Cummings School, 30 healthydogs were tested with the same saliva test as the European study as well as twopopular blood tests here in the US. Between 60 100% of dogs tested positive for one ormore foods on each test. Two dogs tested positive for all antigens on one of the bloodtests, while a different dog tested positive for all antigens on the saliva test. Keep inmind that these are healthy dogs with no evidence of allergies!

Take Home: Saliva and blood tests for food allergies in dogs do not reliably distinguishbetween healthy and allergic dogs and should not be used for diagnosis of food allergy! The use of these blood and saliva tests could result in the false identification of a lot ofcommon foods as allergens. Pet owners may then avoid these ingredients in favor ofmore expensive, more uncommon, and potentially nutritionally riskier exotic ingredients.

While diet elimination is difficult to do correctly, it remains the best option that we havefor diagnosis of food allergies in pets.

BrucellosisDog Breeders Shouldn’t Skip Testing for This Dangerous Disease

Based on my many discussions with breeders over the years, there appears to be a greatdeal of misunderstanding about the bacterial disease brucellosis. Interestingly, there alsoseems to be misunderstanding at some veterinary offices as well.

Brucellosis is a contagious disease caused by the bacterium Brucella canis. It is one of theleading causes of infertility in breeding stock. It occurs worldwide, affects all kinds of dogs, purebred and not, and can also be transmitted from dogs to humans. Other animals thatcan be affected with brucellosis include livestock such as sheep, cattle, and goats, as wellas wildlife, including bison, elk, and wild pigs.

In dogs, a classic sign of brucellosis is abortion during the third trimester of pregnancy.Other signs include stillbirths, conception failures, and litter resorption. Some infected dogsmay show no symptoms, however.

In humans, clinical symptoms vary. They range from mild, nonspecific or flulike symptomsto infertility or serious cardiac or neurological problems.

In dogs, the bacteria tend to attack the reproductive organs (steroid dependent tissues) butcan also migrate to the eyes, spinal column, liver, spleen, and lymph nodes.

About Brucellosis

With dogs, the main mode of transmission of brucellosis is by direct contact with infectedbody fluids, such as semen, vaginal secretions, and urine. Aborted materials are also amajor source of infection. The bacterium invades the body via the mucous membranes ofthe genitals, nose, eyes, or mouth and is spread throughout the body (organs) via bloodand lymph nodes.

Brucellosis affects female and male dogs in specific ways:

Females: The most often seen clinical symptom in the female dog is infertility, with 75percent of cases resulting in late term abortion (45–55 days of gestation). Aborted puppieswill typically show signs of generalized infection, with the female presenting a brownish orgreen grey discharge and being highly contagious with the bacteria for several weeks.

Males: The male will present with severe inflammation and/or infection of the epididymis(that part of the testicle where sperm matures and is stored). In the early phase ofinfection, the testes will be enlarged and painful. As the infection progresses, the testesbecome firm and shrunken. Infected males will become sterile due to testicular damagecausing anti sperm antibody formation.

Infected males may also develop prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate gland), withclinical symptoms of difficulty urinating and defecating.

Both sexes: Non reproductive symptoms in both sexes can include lethargy, weight loss, and exercise intolerance. More specific clinical symptoms will depend on the organinfected but can include inflammation of the spine, eye, heart, and skin.

The Importance of Testing

There are accurate, definitive tests for brucellosis (PCR based, blood culture), but theymust be performed correctly. Screening tests are accurate if negative except very earlyin the course of the infection. (There is not a 100 percent accurate, definitive test for thisinfection in dogs, though there are many tests available.)
