MEQUON-THIENSVILLE RECREATION DEPARTMENT

As you plan activities for your children this summer be sure to keep in mind the academic and enrichment courses that are offered through the Mequon-Thiensville Recreation Department. Summer Academy is designed for students entering 4K-8th grade.

SCHEDULEThere will be two sessions of Summer Academy. Session 1 will include ONE full week of activities, Monday-Friday. Session 2 is TWO weeks, Monday-Thursday. For both sessions, flexible scheduling options allow for registration in one class or up to all five classes per session, for a full day of fun enrichment activities (8 a.m.-4:15 p.m.). Drop off time is no earlier than 5 minutes before the start of the course.

SESSION 1: June 22-26 ONE full week, Monday-Friday

SESSION 2: July 27-Aug. 6 TWO weeks, Monday-Thursday

LOCATIONAll classes will be held at Wilson Elementary School, located at 11001 N Buntrock Ave, Mequon.

LUNCHNo charge for lunch both sessions for those students who stay for classes all day. Student must register if planning to stay for lunch in order to plan for supervision. Lunch is not provided; students should bring a lunch from home.

PLAYGROUNDSupervised playground activities are available for students who require morning drop off or additional supervised time in the afternoon.

FINANCIAL AIDFinancial Aid is available for students who qualify for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program. For financial aid applicants, please register in-person at the Mequon-Thiensville Recreation Department located at Range Line Center located at 11040 N. Range Line Rd., Mequon.

Students will explore the zones, feelings associated with the zones, explore different coping strategies and tools, create a “toolbox” of strategies for each zone, explore mindfulness and mindfulness activities, and make projects associated with mindfulness.

1:15-2:30 p.m. A Walk Through Disney #315021Students in this class will explore different activities and crafts around a Disney theme. Students will spend time learning, creating and engaging in activities around Disney mov-ies and themes. Example: Finding Nemo students may create a fish inspired craft.

Art for Beginners #315022In this course you will get an introduction to the wonderful world of art! Through role-play, book study, and other activities students will learn how to better express themselves and discover a common language for confidently managing conflict. We will create a culture rooted in respect and kindness as we learn the importance of having a voice, embracing your uniqueness, and surrounding yourself with others who treat you with respect. This course is for both boys and girls.

Exploring Life as an Architect #315032Students will explore the role of architects through planning, drawing and designing structures from buildings to parks! Students will practice math skills, read floor plans, and learn the basics of interior design. This class is ideal for nurturing problem-solving and imaginative play.

¿Hablas Espanol? #315033This summer Spanish course is for beginners with little to no Spanish experience. We will be focusing on basic greetings and vocabulary needed to begin to learn the language. Students will participate in a variety of learning activities and games throughout the week.

1:15-2:30 p.m. Exploring Life as a Veterinarian #315034Students will explore the job of a veterinarian. From pets to zoo animals to farms all the animals need to be well taken care of. In this course students will explore topics such as animals body language, a day in the life of zoo animals, animal hygiene and the role a veterinarian plays in all of those.

Students will have time to explore and utilize online activities to explore with the assistance of teachers to support their creative thinking and support their growth in thinking logically.

Inventioneering #315042Students will learn about the process of inventing and working in teams. They will be presented with an actual concrete problem to resolve and go through the stages from brainstorming through actualization to solve it.

Students will strengthen their reading skills by practicing literacy activities that focus on fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing about their reading.

Chef Academy #315044Students will work together to explore and identify recipes. Students will then have an opportunity to use those recipes in the kitchen. Students will be able to read recipes, identify ingredients needed, utilize math skills and work together to ensure a delicious outcome! An additional $10 supply fee is included in the price of this course.

12-1:15 p.m. Adventures in Aviation #315046Have your imagination take flight in aviation class! From paper airplanes to high flying rockets, students will learn it all. This class will be hands on, culminating with a rocket launch on the final day.

Reinforcing Fractions #315047Students will review fraction basics and re-learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions through visual representations with manipulatives.

Creative Contraptions #315048This class provides an opportunity for students to ignite their creativity and problem-solving skills through the creation of their own mousetrap-like games. Students will learn about Rube Goldberg and work to design an overly complex contraption using humor and a narrative to accomplish a simple task.

1:15-2:30 p.m. Computer Science #315049Students will explore different technology programs such as Google Apps for Education which is a suite of productivity tools designed for classroom collaboration. MTSD students are required to use technology to complete many required projects. In this session, students will become more familiar with Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Docs, Slides and Chrome keyboard shortcuts. If time allows, we may begin to create a Google website. There are also numerous Google Chrome extensions and apps. Students will learn to install and utilize these mini-programs to help them become more efficient users of technology.

Mastering Math Facts #315050Student will work on math facts through fun, engaging activities.

Mind Benders #315053What gets sharper the more you use it? Your brain! In this course students will stay sharp and have fun this summer with challenging Logic Puzzles, Brain Teasers, and Calculator Riddles. Develop the logic, reading comprehension, and mental organization skills key to succeeding in all subjects. These fun puzzles are also great for developing real-life, problem-solving skills!

9-10:15 a.m. Algebra Skills (Entering Grades 7 & 8) #315054Whether you are taking Algebra or Honors Algebra as a 7th or 8th grader, come join us for some math fun while brushing up on those skills that you will need to be successful in Algebra. This class will get your math skills all warmed up and ready to go for Algebra in the fall.

Breakfast Club #315055Students will read and dicuss different texts (books, articles, ads, etc) with peers facilitated by a teacher. Students will have an opportunity to select and share text that interest them. Through conversations, students will work on developing an opinion, identifying the theme, debating and comparing and contrasting the text.

Grade 6 Middle School Readiness #315056A new program for all 6th graders to provide seamless transition to middle school, the course aims to create positive outlook and skills needed for middle school. The following topics will be covered in this course. 1) Navigating middle school (schedules, passing, and hallways) 2) Organization (binder, planner, and locker) 3) Academic success (Infinite Campus, grade check, time management, and teacher websites) 4) Self advocacy (asking for help, and taking responsibility) 5) Physical, emotional and social changes (friendships, resolving conflict, and problem solving)

10:15-11:30 a.m. Geometric Art (Entering Grades 5-8) #315057Come join us to create some awesome art through geometric shapes. Geometric art is a form of abstract art based on the use of geometric forms, repeating patterns, intricate design, and awesome use of color. The fun part of this class is that it is for all art and math skill levels. If you can use a ruler and a protractor, you can make cool geometric art!

Students will learn about Rube Goldberg and work to design an overly complex contraption using humor and a narrative to accomplish a simple task.

3D Art #315059Students will have the opportunity to create 3-dimensional artwork. Sculptures will be created with paper mache and plaster using armatures to create the initial shape. Proper technique and crafts-manship are stressed in this course. Students should come to class ready to get a bit messy!

12-1:15 p.m. Model Rocketry #315060Students will obtain a better understanding of aerodynamics, rocket propulsion, teamwork, cooperation, and social interaction as they are guided through the process of building and launching model rockets. Each student should expect to build and launch 1 rocket during this 1 week course.

Reading Workshop #315061This course is for students who are looking for an extended learning opportunity to strengthen skills and gain extra practice. Students will strengthen their reading skills by practicing literacy activities that focus on fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing about their reading.

Thinking Skills through Board Games (Entering Grades 5-8) #315062Improve your thinking skills and through board games like Chess, Settlers of Catan, Blockus, Colorku, and many more.

1:15-2:30 p.m. Active Games (Entering Grades 5-8) #315063Students will participate in active games to keep them moving and having fun. Students will spend time outside (weather dependent) focusing on teamwork, communication, and get kids active.

Writing Workshop #315064This class will offer students the ability to continue practice in writing. Students will gain experience in brainstorming, organizing their thoughts, and publishing their work that will enhance their ability to author informational, opinion, and narrative writing.

Focused Note Taking #315065Focused Note-Taking will introduce different methods of note-taking for middle school students. Students will learn about the purpose of note-taking, different organizational styles, and to take notes from different mediums (for example, powerpoints, videos, discussions, texts). Students will then apply the notes to different activities such as Socratic Seminars and Philosophical Chairs/De-bate, and trivia activities and games. Students will also have opportunities to collaborate with peers to provide and receive feedback in regards to notes.

ALEKS (Entering Grades 6-8) #315067In this math course, students will engage in a personalized learning experience. With the guidance of the middle school math specialists, each student will be placed in an appropriate math curriculum through ALEKS. ALEKS is a web-based, assessment and learning system which uses adaptive ques-tioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn’t know. From that information, the math specialist will support the students through a personalized learning path through ALEKS. The purpose of this class is for students to build upon their math skills so they can be successful going into the following school year. The class will have a flexible schedule that will al-low students to go at their own pace. Classroom time will be available for students one hour a week to ask questions, work on ALEKS with support from the math specialist, and collaborate with other students on math problems. The rest of the time will be spent working on ALEKS outside of class. This will allow for more flexibility in completing the program. The math specialist will be available via email to answer any questions or provide additional support. *Dates to come in April. Course fee for ALEKs is $100.

Students will learn about Rube Goldberg and work to design an overly complex contraption using humor and a narrative to accomplish a simple task.

Middle School Readiness (Entering Grade 6) #315149A new program for all 6th graders to provide seamless transition to middle school, the course aims to create positive outlook and skills needed for middle school. The following topics will be covered in this course. 1) Navigating middle school (schedules, passing, and hallways) 2) Organization (binder, planner, and locker) 3) Academic success (Infinite Campus, grade check,

time management, and teacher websites) 4) Self advocacy (asking for help, and taking responsibility) 5) Physical, emotional, and social changes

(friendships, resolving conflict, and problem solving)

1:15-2:30 p.m. Active Games (Entering Grades 5-8) #315150Students will participate in active games to keep them moving and having fun. Students will spend time outside (weather dependent) focusing on teamwork, communication, and get kids active.

Reading Workshop #315151This course is for students who are looking for an extended learning opportunity to strengthen skills and gain extra practice. Students will strengthen their reading skills by practicing literacy activities that focus on fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing about their reading.

Focused Note Taking #315152Focused Note-Taking will introduce different methods of note-taking for middle school students. Students will learn about the purpose of note-taking, different organizational styles, and to take notes from different mediums (for example, powerpoints, videos, discussions, texts). Students will then apply the notes to different activities such as Socratic Seminars and Philosophical Chairs/De-bate, and trivia activities and games. Students will also have opportunities to collaborate with peers to provide and receive feedback in regards to notes.

2:30-3:45 p.m. Creative Contraptions #315153This class provides an opportunity for students to ignite their creativity and problem-solving skills through the creation of their own mousetrap-like games. Students will learn about Rube Goldberg and work to design an overly complex contraption using humor and a narrative to accomplish a simple task.

Math Workshop #315154This class will offer students the ability to strengthen skills and gain extra practice in mathematics utilizing workshop approach. Focus will include building skills in number and operations, algebraic thinking, geometry and data and measurement.

3:45-4:15 p.m. Playground #315156Students will engage in play-based activities that support growth in social skills, citizenship, and collabo-rative problem solving through activities such as kickball, 4-square, hopscotch, etc.
