2020 Cleveland Deanery Report to the 59th Diocesan Assembly of the Diocese of Chicago and the Midwest

• Three Virtual Deanery Meetings were held. Two with Archbishop Paul. • Published a booklet “Lives of the American Saints” in honor of the 50th Anniversary of Autocephaly. Yet to be distributed due to the Virus. • Presently serving as Administrator of St Theodosius Cathedral as of January 1, following the retirement of Fr John Zdinak. • Fr Jonathan Cholcher (St John’s, Warren, OH) relocated to serve St Mark’s in Bradenton Florida in late May. • Fr Brian Crivella replaced Fr Jonathan Cholcher in Warren upon his departure. (See above) • Attended many Virtual Bishop Council Meetings since the onset of the Virus. • Fr Nicholas Wyslutsky, of St Nicholas in Mogadore, has been streaming all services on You Tube since the onset of the Virus. • His Eminence, Archbishop Paul, visited the parish in January 2020 to ordain former St. Gregory’s parishioner, now current St. Tikhon’s seminary student, Peter Simko to the Holy Diaconate.

• During Great Lent, an online retreat was offered by Dr. Nathan “Basil” Jacobs producer of Becoming Truly Human. He offered a presentation on an Orthodox Christian understanding of Hell and Hades.

• Online parish prayers and discussions focusing upon the pandemic and its effect on parish life, protests around the nation, and issues of race and reconciliation.

Outreach and Charitable Activities • The Parish Outreach program exists to provide food and other items to those in need. It

has operated continuously during the pandemic. The program had been serving four (4) meals a week to those need. After the beginning of the pandemic, this is now three (3) meals each week.

• Supporting a seminarian who was a member of St. Gregory’s. • Providing scholarships to college students who are members of Orthodox Christian

Fellowship (OCF) at Ohio State and surrounding colleges / universities, attend St. Gregory’s while in college, and/or are members of the parish enrolled in institutions of higher education.

Major Challenges Faced • Lack of adequate parking. • Solve challenges regarding handicap accessibility. The parish’s nave and the first floor of

the parish education building are handicap accessible, but the social hall and upstairs religious education rooms are not. The parish is no longer renting out the house next door. This will help provide additional handicap accessible space for certain parish functions.
