The contest marks the Pirates' first meeting with the Cavaliers since 2008. ECU opened its 2020-21 campaign with a narrow 89-81 loss to Towson on the road. The Pirates rallied from a double- digit second-half deficit to tie the game in the fourth quarter, but could not quite complete the comeback. The scoring output was the largest for the team in a single game since head coach Kim McNeill took the reins of the program. East Carolina entered the contest at Towson shorthanded, playing without the services of 2019-20 American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year Lashonda Monk who averaged 14.9 points per game a season ago. East Carolina/ECU Please Feel free to call us East Carolina or ECU. However, we respectfully ask that the erroneous designation of Eastern Carolina or flawed abbreviations such as E. Carolina, East Caro, ECaro, or EC never be used.

Scouting Virginia Like East Carolina, Virginia began its 2020-21 season with a loss. The Cavaliers trekked down to Orlando to face off against fellow American Athletic Conference member UCF and fell by a 60-34 margin. Meg Jefferson paced UVA with eight points while Deja Bristol pulled down a team-best eight rebounds. The Cavaliers shot just 31.1 percent (14-of-45) from the field and turned the ball over 30 times, but did out-rebound the Knights 33-28. A season ago, Virginia turned in a 13-17 overall record and 8-10 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Cavaliers were selected to finish 15th of 15 teams by the ACC head coaches in the league's preseason poll. Nine-time WNBA All-Star Tina Thompson is in her third year as head coach of the Virginia women's basketball program and owns a record of 25-37 at the institution.

The Virginia Series East Carolina and Virginia have met on the women's basketball hardwood four times dating back to 1980 and have split those contests. The Cavaliers, who were nationally ranked at the time, won the last encounter 80-67 in Charlottesville Dec. 6, 2008. The Pirates have won two of the the last three, including a 64-62 victory at home Jan. 10, 1982.

Dazzling Debuts Sierra DaCosta put together a huge debut in the Purple and Gold after sitting out last year due to NCAA student-athlete transfer rules. She scored 25 points and pulled down seven rebounds, both team highs, while hitting 10 of 12 shots at the free throw line. Freshman Synia Johnson also reached double figures in her first collegiate contest, notching 10 points to go along with three steals in 29 minutes.

Signature DefenseEast Carolina ranked second nationally in steals and steals per game as well as third in turnovers forced last year. Early signs indicate that has little chance of changing this season as the Pirates notched 17 steals and caused 24 turnovers in the season opener at Towson. Record Book Rewrite Monk turned in a season to remember in 2019-20. Along with earning American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year laurels, she also garnered a spot on the AAC All-Conference Second Team. Monk is not only the first-ever ECU player to be named Defensive Player of the Year, regardless of conference, but is also the first non-UConn player to receive the award. She also became the third Pirate player to be named Second-Team All-AAC, joining I'Tiana Taylor (2015) and Jada Payne (2016), as well as the third East Carolina player to be named to multiple American all-conference teams (Taylor and Payne). Monk set numerous records last season with her prowess on the defensive end, ranking third in the country in both steals (121) and steals per game (4.17) as well as leading the AAC in both. She is the first ECU player with multiple nine-steal games in the same season, accomplishing the feat in wins over Tulsa and Tulane. Monk also not only broke the East Carolina career record for steals, but also the AAC standard, and now owns 316 for her career. Monk surpassed Toina Coley for the ECU single-season steals record (125) by swiping four in the conference tournament first-round loss to Temple. Her contributions were not limited just to the defensive side of the ball as she led ECU in scoring (14.9 points per game) while ranking ninth in the league. She increased her scoring average to 15.3 in conference contests while finishing tenth in the league in assists per game (3.6) and free throw percentage (.761).

Freshman Sensation Taniyah Thompson exploded onto the collegiate women's basketball scene during the 2019-20 campaign, earning unanimous selection to the American Athletic Conference All-Freshman Team. She was one of the most productive scorers in the league regardless of class, finishing the regular season averaging 13.7 points per contest - good for 11th among the conference circuit and first in terms of AAC rookies. Thompson also led league freshmen in steals per game (1.9) and average minutes played per contest (34.7) while increasing her scoring average to 14.8 versus league opponents. Overall, she produced 19 double-digit scoring games and hit the 20-point mark on seven different occasions. Additionally, Thompson represented one of just three AAC freshmen to record a double-double, scoring 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds at Tulsa. She also became just the ninth ECU player to convert at least six three-pointers in a single game when she connected on six of eight attempts beyond the arc against Dayton.

Experience All Over It's no secret that East Carolina was a young basketball squad in 2019-20. The Pirate starting lineup in a 55-47 setback to SMU on Jan. 8 featured four freshmen (Thompson, Josephs, Evans and Tsineke), marking the first time that has happened at ECU since 2001. This season, however, the roster is much more balanced as East Carolina boasts four graduate students, one senior, three juniors, four sophomores and four freshmen. Raven Johnson and Justice Gee, who have combined to play 185 games in their careers, are back after essentially missing the entire 2019-20 season with injuries. Additionally, Dacosta is eligible to suit up following three standout seasons for the Hawks. She earned 2017 America East Conference Rookie of the Year recognition in 2017 and followed up with 2019 All-America East Third-Team honors in 2019.

Claytor Steps Up In the last nine games of the 2019-20 regular season, Dominique Claytor was a force as she averaged 10.8 and 8.4 rebounds per contest while producing three double-doubles. In six victories during the stretch, Claytor was even better - putting up 12.5 points and 9.3 boards a game. All told, the Pirates were 7-1 when she scored in double figures.

What's Back For The Pirates?Below is a numerical breakdown of what is coming back for the Pirates this season:

Seventh Season in The AmericanEast Carolina is in its seventh season as a member of the American Athletic Conference after spending 13 years as part of Conference USA. The AAC has seen a shift in its membership with national powerhouse Connecticut opting to re-join the Big East Conference just prior to the 2020-21 campaign. That said, the Pirates look for their highest finish in the league since taking fifth place during their debut season (2014-15). ECU advanced all the way to the conference tournament semifinals that year before bowing out to UConn.

• Mentored Lashonda Monk to American Conference Defensive Player of the Year and Second-Team honors in 2019-20.• Led Hartford to consecutive America East Tournament championship game appearances in 2018 and 2019 as well as a WNIT bid in 2019.• Helped guide 12 Hartford players to America East all-conference laurels, including 2018 America East Scholar-Athlete Lindsey Abed and 2017 Rookie of the Year Sierra Dacosta. • Has worked in some of the NCAA's top conferences, including the ACC, SEC, Pac 12 and Atlantic 10. • Named 1996 Big South Conference Rookie of the Year• Tabbed to the Colonial Athletic Association All-Defensive Team as a senior at Richmond.

Kim McNeill begins her second season at the helm of the East Carolina women's basketball prorgram after agreeing to contract terms to become the Pirates' head coach on March 28, 2019.

In McNeill’s first season in Greenville, the Pirates made history on the defensive end. ECU finished second in the country in steals (407), steals per game (13.6) and turnovers forced (24.10) as well as third in turnover margin (+8.13).The 407 steals by ECU were both a school record and both Lashonda Monk (third) and Dominique Claytor (14th) finished in the top-14 of the nation in steals.

Under McNeill’s guidance, Monk put together one of the best individual seasons in ECU history. The junior guard finished the season with 125 steals, breaking both the ECU and the AAC single-season record and finishing third in the NCAA. Monk became the first ECU player to win the AAC Defensive Player of the Year award and was named Second-Team All-AAC. Monk also made history by breaking the ECU career steals record as well as becoming the 23rd Pirate to reach the 1,000 career points plateau.

Along with Monk, Tanyiah Thompson also earned postseason honors, becoming a unanimous selection to the AAC All-Rookie team after leading all AAC freshmen in scoring, minutes and steals. It was just the third time that ECU has had multiple postseason honorees since moving to the AAC in 2014. Prior to arriving at ECU, the Bassett, Va., native led Hartford to consecutive America East Conference Tournament championship game appearances and three-straight winning seasons. She owns a 59-38 (.608) record in three seasons directing the Hawks, producing a winning record in all three campaigns. Coming off a successful three-year tenure at Hartford, McNeill led the Hawks back to the postseason for the first time since 2013. The Hawks made history when they became the first-ever No. 6 seed to reach the America East title contest in 2018 before returning as finalists in 2019. McNeill’s last game on the Hartford bench was a first-round setback to Providence in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). Defense has been a hallmark for McNeill’s teams as the 2018-19 Hawks finished the year second in the NCAA in steals per game (13.0), turnovers forced (24.5) and turnover margin (9.35). It was the third-straight season that UHART had ranked in the top-10 in both steals and turnover margin. Offensively, McNeill helped rewrite the school record books. In each of her final two seasons, the Hawks dished out more than 400 assists - including a school-record 441 in 2017-18. Its 66.8 scoring average topped all America East squads in 2016-17 and set a new program standard. In addition, Hartford led the America East in three-point shooting percentage (.345) and had the fewest turnovers in program history during McNeill’s debut campaign. McNeill mentored 12 America East All-Conference selections, including 2018 America East Scholar-Athlete Lindsey Abed and 2017 Rookie-of-the-Year Sierra DaCosta. Prior to accepting the Hawks’ top women’s basketball position, McNeill spent 16 seasons as an assistant coach at the Division I level. She distinguished herself as an effective and successful recruiter and coach while working in some of the NCAA’s top conferences, including the ACC, SEC, Pac-12 and Atlantic-10. McNeill came to Hartford after spending five seasons on Joanne Boyle’s staff at the University of Virginia, starting as an assistant coach before being elevated to associate head coach in 2013. She helped pilot the program to three WNIT appearances, including back-to-back berth in 2014-15 and 2015-16. The Cavaliers posted a 90-71 record during her five-year stint, which included the program’s first 25-win season since 1999-00 (in 2011-12). Virginia was the third stop in which McNeill had worked alongside Boyle, having previously served as an assistant on her staff at the University of Richmond (2004-05) and at the University of California (2005-07). Prior to rejoining Boyle’s staff at Virginia, she spent four seasons under Andy Landers at the University of Georgia from 2007 to 2011. McNeill started her career at James Madison where she worked for three overall seasons (2000-01 and 2002-04). Between the two stints at JMU, she served as an assistant at Howard University for one year. McNeill was a three-year letterwinner and co-captain at Richmond, where she received her bachelor’s degree in sport science in 2000. On the court, she was named to the Colonial Athletic Association All-Defensive Team as a senior. Prior to transferring to Richmond, she earned 1996 Big South Conference Rookie-of-the-Year honors at Radford. McNeill and her husband, Cory McNeill, are the parents of twins, Cayden and Gabrielle.
