Calendar Changes The school calendar will largely remain the same. There is no feasible or predictable way to adjust the calendar to accommodate for this situation in regard to closures (if needed). The only change that will be made to the calendar will impact teacher in-service time. In-service days were moved from November, December, March and May to August 10th-13th to allow teachers to prepare for the upcoming school year in the event our schedule and delivery must change due to COVID-19 concerns.

Sanitizing & Cleaning Efforts Since March 2020, our custodial staff has been increasing and revamping our routines to clean and sanitize our building and grounds. They have employed new products and new techniques to clean and sanitize our facilities. It should not however, be assumed that our custodians are the only one’s solely responsible for keeping our facilities clean. Additional effort for all inhabitants of the building will need to be made to ensure that we keep our school as germ free as possible.

Hygiene & Education Much of the research has indicated that you can mitigate the spread of not just COVID-19, but many other viruses and germs with proper hygiene. Efforts will be made by classroom teachers and staff to impress the importance of and encourage frequent and appropriate hand washing. Additionally, the district purchased hand sanitizer dispensers and hand sanitizer to be placed in all classrooms and public areas of the school. There will be visual reminder posters hung up in restrooms, public areas and classrooms as well. Hand washing and/or hand sanitizing will be required at arrival to classes and/or dismissal from classes, before and after meals, after using the restroom, after blowing noses, coughing and sneezing, and after touching objects handled by several people. Classrooms teachers will be encouraged to keep windows open as often as practical to encourage fresh air flow.

Masks/Shields Depending on the age and grade level of children, health concerns of individual students and the level of exposure to COVID-19 in our school and community, the requirement of masks will vary. Masks and protective face coverings serve a significant role in preventing the spread of disease, but they also pose a significant hurdle to the impactful education of students. So much instruction at the elementary depends on the formation of sounds, it is vital that students be able to see and hear one another to enhance verbal development. We recommend that you purchase masks for your students, but they will not be required at levels one and two of educational delivery. As a parent if you feel safer with your student wearing a mask or shield, please feel free to provide one for them at any time. This requirement is subject to change based on the guidance given from the South Dakota Department of Health. Health & Safety Screenings Realizing that many of the precautions put into place cause inconvenience, we ask that you be patient and understanding of the processes that we will have in place to screen students and staff. Our primary goal is to educate students, but we want to do so safely. Parents/guardians can assist in minimizing the spread of the illness and calls to pick up students who are exhibiting symptoms by conducting screenings to include temperature checks at home before arriving at school. Students will be screened upon arrival to school with temperature checks and symptom related questions below. In the event that a student registers a 100 degree temperature they will be sent home immediately. If a student gives an affirmative answer to one or more of the screening questions below, they will likely be sent home as well. A screening checklist can be found at the end of this document.

• Has your child had close contact (within 6 feet for at least 15 minutes) with a confirmed case of COVID-19?

• Does your child have chills or a fever of 100.4 or greater?

• Does your child have new or worsening cough?

• Does your child have shortness of breath or difficulty breathing?

• Is your child experiencing fatigue?

• Does your child have unexplained muscle or body aches?

• Does your child have a headache (not related to a known health condition i.e. migraines)?

• Does your child have a new loss of taste or smell?

• Does your child have a sore throat?

• Has your child been experiencing nausea or vomiting?

• Does your child have diarrhea? Please keep students home if they give an affirmative answer to any of the above questions.

Students becoming ill with COVID-19 related symptoms at school will be “ICE-d”: I – Isolated and masked (if not already) C – Contact will be made to parents for immediate pick up (within 30 minutes) E – Exited as soon as possible Isolation, Quarantine, Infection & Re-entry in School If a student/staff member is exhibiting the symptoms of COVID-19, the ICE protocol will be followed. A ten day isolation period or two negative COVID-19 tests will be required for re-entry into school. In the event that testing is not available and/or given, the individual will not be permitted to return to school until they are fever free for 24 hours, their respiratory symptoms (cough, shortness of breath, etc.) have improved AND it has been ten days since the onset of symptoms. If COVID-19 is confirmed in a household, the best practice and recommendation from the CDC is for those in close contact to quarantine for 14 days. With the person(s) infected in some sort of homebound isolation (see CDC recommendations for home care in the event someone is COVID-19 positive). Interventions The interruption of school in March and the potential for further interruption in the event of more infections has and will continue to cause some gaps in education for students. Teachers will be assessing students upon re-entry to gauge educational levels and will be making plans to accommodate for missed learning. The success of the student is not solely the responsibility of the teacher, however. It is vital that parents/guardians assist in the efforts to catch students who may have fallen behind. Teachers will employ strategies to assist students to regain missed learning. It is the responsibility of the student to be receptive to that teaching, and it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to support the student and teacher in the process. Teachers in the elementary will employ strategies in the classroom with the additional support of our school wide Title I coordinator to identify gaps, plan for addressing them, and build supports to close the them. This may require time in the Title I room and or in class supports for students. At the middle and high school levels, there is a built in Intervention time during the school day prior to lunch where students can receive help from teachers. Time for students to meet with teachers will be done on an individual basis (after teacher assessment). Friday school will also be utilized to assist students who are in need of assistance. Through this process, we would like to avoid the potential to refer students to special education due to gaps created by COVID-19. Interventions will serve a key role in ensuring students get appropriate assistance tailored to their needs. Activities and Athletics Much of what we will do will depend on the rules and regulations of the South Dakota High School Activities Association. Their guidance document is located on our resource page and is also an evolving document and has specifics for each level of mitigation and specifics for each sport.

Frequently Asked Questions How do I know if I need to quarantine? Trying to determine when quarantine is necessary can be difficult. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that individuals quarantine for 14 days in the event of close contact. The CDC defines close contact as:

• If you were within 6 feet of someone for at least 15 minutes

• You provided care at home to someone who is sick with COVID-19

• You had direct physical contact with the person (touched, hugged, or kissed)

• You shared eating/drinking utensils

• They coughed, sneezed or somehow got respiratory droplets on you How long do I have to quarantine? The CDC recommends a 14 day quarantine from the last date of close contact/exposure. I have been exposed, but I am not symptomatic. Can I physically come to school? Unfortunately, no. There may be a time where a family member or student will have the need to quarantine (See How do I know if I need to quarantine?). In the event that you are subject to quarantine and are not experiencing symptoms you will be required to stay home, but you will need to be engaged in learning via digital means. I am quarantined at home but am not experiencing symptoms of illness. What is expected of me? Students: In the event that you are well and quarantined at home, you are expected to continue to complete school work. There will not be exceptions made during this time for work not completed. Teachers will provide school work for students who find themselves unable to physically attend school due to COVID-19 via a variety of means. If I am quarantined, can I participate in practices and school events? No. Quarantine and the duration of the quarantine applies to activities in the same manner that it applies to attending school. Can I enroll my student in school and just keep them home to do school work? While we understand the fear and anxiety that COVID-19 causes for some, research published by the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that the detrimental impact that keeping students away from peers poses is a far greater risk to student health than the virus itself. We believe that the best place for students’ mental health and immunity is at school. Students wanting to earn credit for courses will need to be enrolled in school in New Underwood and attend regularly. There will not be an option to come in person or stay home. Attendance and face to face instruction is vital to impactful education, and we will require that students receiving education from our school be in attendance. We will do our best to work with students that find themselves in quarantine situations and those that experience illness along the way to provide educational services in the event they are not able to physically attend school. I prefer to homeschool my student. What do I need to do? If the decision is made to withdraw your student(s) from school for homeschool purposes, parents/guardians will need to complete the appropriate homeschool paperwork that the school/state requires.
