President’s Message Ramblings from your President Hi All,

It’s that time where I have to dig into my scrambled brain . My thoughts this month turn to trying to explain to others how I think I got to where I’m at. This all began when my first Sprite got hit while parked on the street behind my house. I managed to catch the kid. He was just turning around in my neighbors driveway. His windows were all fogged up (don’t know what they were doing to fog up the window!). He backed into the Sprite so hard he crunched the hub cap on the curb side!. That’s where it all started!

I collected the money I requested from the insurance company. My search for parts lead me all over the U.S. I needed a fender, a inner, and outer sill, a wheel and a hub cap. Instead of buying the individual parts, I found a parts car, a 1967 Austin Healy Sprite (which I still have!). When I was telling the guy who rented me the trailer what I was going to use the trailer for, he said he had a 65 MG midget that I could have for free! So now I ended up with my damaged Sprite, and two parts cars! The 65 Midget was disassembled and the parts put ‘away’. The 67 Sprite was stashed in a corner (was too good to be a parts car) in hopes that someday I would find an engine and trans for it. I was then told about a 62 Sprite, with a 72 Midget parts car! Oops now I had 5 Spridgets! Soon to be followed by my beloved 74 Midget. My original 67 I ended up parting out (and saving everything but the body, which I had repaired, then sold). The 72 Midget was parted out and its parts saved again, all but the bare body! My garage was now filled with 4 cars and parts from 3 others. Not to mention 2 motorcycles a 60 gallon compressor, a lathe, work bench, and 14 feet of shelving. Not to mention spares for the bikes! No room for me to work! So now instead of bringing a car to Britfest AGAIN, I will bring my van if we still have it, or my Expedition. Maybe I’ll have a car ready for next year. At least I will get to see all of your cars at Britfest this year! So don’t let me down, I need a fix of beautiful British car’s to get me through till next year! Please help!

Steve W. Opened our meeting stating that the planning for Britfest is well underway. Thanked Rob Alper for assisting Ole in getting Meshing Gears up and running again. Rob A stated that they needed articles for Meshing Gears, so if you have something long or short send it to Ole and or Rob. Steve hopes that the Halloween Rally run this year, maybe in the Spring. Charlie reminded everyone that it was cancelled due to the low participation of it. A lot of time is required to plan and run a rally, with low participation it isn't worth it. Again its January and your club dues are due now, see Karl . Butch attended the Simeone Museum. The rain was heavy and no vehicles went outside but it was still worthwhile . Charlie reported that Britfest will be on 2 May 2020 and at Horseshoe Lake as last year. Sponsors are needed, If youknow a business, talk to them about becoming one. An Email Blast will go out this week on Britfest. The food vendor from last year will be back, talked to them about something for breakfast. Karl reported that we have 102 members and the quarterly report is available. Keith Murphy participated in the 2019 "The Great Race" and gave us the insight on it. Its a 9 Day 2300 mile Timed and Distance race not just a speed race. No vehicle could be earlier then 1974. He used his 54 MGTF for the race. Each day he got the days route, time and interval instructions. The race started at Riverside Ca. and ended in Tacoma Wa. His TF broke down once and yet he finished the race in 41st position out of 141 Vehicles with 101 vehicles finishing the race..

    Member’s Car

Member: James Van Genderen Car: 1959 MGA My love for British cars began one day when I was driving in my hometown of Hawthorne, NJ. At the time, I was driving my 1955 Chevrolet and I was a member of a local car club called the “Road Rebels”. The club was a classic for the 50’s and 60’s. We were into four barrel carburetors, dual exhaust, “baby moons” etc. We proudly displayed our club plaque from chains between the chrome exhaust tips of our dual exhaust. Needless to say, there were no MG owners in the club. When driving down Goffle Road, I passed a car dealership that had just placed on the lot a beautiful 1958 Icelandic blue MG with wires and light gray interior.

I had never thought about MG’s before, but I was hooked. The 55 Chevy was sold, “Road Rebels” became history, and British cars were in my blood. Well, I drove that 1958 MGA for a number of years until one snowy winter day, there was this patch of ice. Unfortunately, that was the end of the story for my beautiful, loved MG. Well, a lot of years passed before I could afford another MG. Life with marriage, three kids, house and eventually three college tuitions prevented me from getting another MG until 2004. The 1959 MGA coupe I own now was a somewhat abandoned car sitting in the Arizona sand behind a garage.

If you ever have driven in a coupe in summer, you probably remember they are pretty warm on a summer day. Thinking about warmth you can probably understand why it was left behind a garage in Arizona. The body off restoration was started in 1990. The car was painted Mineral Blue which was a color reserved for the coupe in 1959. I don’t know too many details after 1990 until 2003 when I met someone living in Oregon who had a small car collection. He owned the coupe and had decided to sell it. I purchased the coupe and shipped it across country using Horseless Carriage. The coupe being an Arizona car is rust free. I have done some of the restoration, but when I received it, a lot of it had been completed. The car has won a couple of small Concours events in its class and also taken first place in a number of local events. Over the last two years, I entered a small car show at the Elks Club in Pompton Lakes, NJ.

  • 7

Member’s Car Cont’d A photographer, Jay Hirsh, photographed my coupe and submitted it to NAMGAR magazine. One of the photos was chosen to be the centerfold of the July/August issue which was a surprise. I felt very honored. The car is a great car. I just hope I don’t get too old to crawl under it or get into it. My wife loves the car and has told me I can never sell it, but never is a long time. I remember Fred Weber saying to me that he would occasionally set up a folding chair in his garage and telling me of the joy he felt from just looking at his car. I think that British car lovers look upon these cars the way some people look at paintings hanging on a wall, a thing of beauty. The photos show my car as found in 1990 and the photo chosen by NAMGAR.

In addition to owning this beautiful 1959 MGA Coupe, James is also the MG Car Club Central Jersey Centre’s Member Of The Year for 2020.

If anybody tells you that Millennials don’t like cars tell them about my son Adam. Adam is a Mechanical Engineer working for American Honda R & D in Ohio. He and his friends are every bit as much into cars as we were.

Adam and his two roommates, also gearheads, are renting a house in Powell, Ohio and renting the old, out of business service station next door. The service station has the capacity to house 12 cars, and that’s where they do all of their automotive magic.

Not too long ago I asked Adam if he’d like to restore my 1952 MG-TD. Having grown up hearing the stories about my MGB, TR6, X-1/9 and the TD I owned in the 70s he jumped at the chance.

Goodbye for Now, TD By Rob Alper

About two weeks ago he came with his car trailer to take my TD back to Ohio. He bought this car trailer a few weeks earlier and because he works for Honda he is allowed to borrow their vehicles when he needs them. The Ridgeline was the perfect tow vehicle, the one he borrowed was set up for a trailer, and his trailer has electric brakes.

We spent the morning getting the TD ready for the trip.

Once the TD was ready, we had to get it onto the trailer. Fortunately the trailer came with a 3,500 lb. pull winch. Once we attached the winch cable to the front of the car we were ready. I sat in the car to steer it up the ramps and Adam operated the winch. Within a few minutes we had the car on the trailer and began securing it for the 450 mile drive. We used ratcheting tie downs and the process went easily.

Now my TD is in Ohio. Adam has started working on the mechanicals. He is friendly with the owner of a body shop who does very high quality work. As soon as Adam gets the car running, the bodyshop will start working on the body. We are going to bring the car back to as close to original as possible. I won’t have it back for Brifest 2020, but I do expect to show it at Britfest 2021.

Keith Murphy and the Hemmings Great Race 2019

If you were lucky enough to attend our January meeting you got to hear from Keith O’Conner Murphy.

Keith is a man of many talents. He is member number 200 in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. Among his hit records is the song “Cindy Lou!” Hear it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkBuA8gDJ1c. For more details on Keith’s musical career visit this Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_O%27Conner_Murphy

After his musical career Keith and his lovely wife Brenda moved to Schooley’s Mountain, NJ to help M&M Mars with their new products.

Although he grew up in Indiana, he moved here from Waco, TX after developing Skittles and Starburst candies. Brenda was a consultant to the candy giant plus made numerous appearances in New York City and California on every major TV network as “The Candy Queen” with candy and cake sculptures she created as well as Good Housekeeping and books.

Keith owns a beautifully restored MG-TF and is a fellow member of the MG Car Club of Central Jersey Centre.

At the January meeting Keith gave us a great presentation on his participation in the Hemmings Motor News 2019 Great Race from Riverside CA to Tacoma, WA. He as the navigator together with Steve Rybicki, the driver, covered the 2,300 mile course in a 1954 MG-TF. He brought a number of slides and told us all about the difficulty and fun involved in participating in this great rally. Keith and Steve entered Steve’s red MG-TF car number 41 and were one of 101 who finished out of 150 entries from the US and countries as far away as Australia and Japan. Keith brought his medal which proclaims “To Finish is to Win!”. Not bad for such a grueling race which went as low as near Death Valley below sea level and 105 degrees, to Mt. Hood and Donner’s Pass with snow along the road at 8,000 feet and 40 degrees.

Take a look at the pages that follow. You’ll find an exciting story, in Keith’s own words, about his participation in the Hemmings Great Race.

Keith Murphy and the Great Race (Cont’d)

It all began in 2017 when I was reading about the Great Race and added it to my “bucket list”. I love adventure, but mountain climbing, or sky diving did not seem like such a good idea at my age. The race requires a driver and navigator, so the first thing was to find another person as crazy as me, who would be interested in participating in such an event. They would also be required to split the hefty entrance fee and commitment, if we were so fortunate to be accepted. I found such a person in friend Steve Rybicki. Steve and I met in 2011 when we both were part of MG International in Reno, Nevada, Steve living in Michigan while I live in New Jersey. We filled out the forms in 2017 and were put on a wait list, as entrants are limited to 150. We could not chase our dream until 2019. Participants were from many states, and the countries of Canada, Australia, England, Switzerland, and Japan. I have been a member of the New England MGT register since 1973. After driving my BRG 1954 MG TF over 40,000 miles from New Jersey to the Florida Keys, Provinces of Canada including Newfoundland, are and as far west as the Indy Racetrack and Waco, Texas, I restored the car for the second time in 2015.

We won the 50th anniversary of the NEMGTR among a group of 14 fine TF’S. The car is also the only People’s Choice winner by an MG T series in any major Concours, this one in Greenwich, CT. The average value of the People’s Choice winner over the past twenty years was right at $1,000,000 which is just a tad over the value of an MG-T! I was not yet ready to subject the car to such a grueling event. Steve by coincidence, had purchased a TF just around 4 years ago, and was willing to beef it up and use the red MG for the event. It was actually even more than “beefing up”, it was a nice restoration. Of course, this meant he had the coveted position of driving for most of the race, while I was navigator – a position that post-race I would not wish on anyone who was half sane. Now for a very brief description of how the race works, condensing many pages into a paragraph or two. The race was inspired by the 1965 comedy movie “The Great Race”, which was in turn inspired by the 1908 New York to Paris race. In 2019 the race covered Riverside, California near LA, to Tacoma, Washington – over 9 days and 2,300 miles. It is open to 1974 and older autos.

It is a Time, Speed and Distance rally (TSD). In this type of rally you are allowed to know two out of three, and in the case of the Great Race it always is the Distance you do not know, and the odometer is covered or disconnected. At the beginning of the day, you pick up a sheet that tells your start time, and everyone is given the instructions for the day. You also set your special clock to their Atomic clock. Nearly everyone in the race purchases a special large and accurate “SawTooth” clock, and a $1,000 “Timewise” speedometer that is made for accuracy and readability.

Steve, like most entrants, made special brackets for the dash to hold these – very much more difficult in a small MG, than most of the cars which were larger. During the day there are 5 or 6 times when 2 or 3 people with a stopwatch will appear out of nowhere and click your time and blow a whistle when your front axle passes them. If you are a second late or a second early you score a point – which is not a good thing.

  • 11

Keith Murphy and the Great Race (Cont’d) If you are two minutes late for example – it is even worse and you score

120 points! It is sort of like golf – you want the lowest score. Perfect would be zero. The winners in a 1916 Hudson, collecting $50,000, scored an incredible 45 seconds! There were several classes, including a Rookie class which we were in, that scored mostly 1 to 3 minutes to win. To encourage many of the older cars to compete, there is a handicap system for each year of the car. Since 1983, with only a couple of exceptions, the overall winner has been a 1911 through 1936 automobile. Interestingly, a 1928 to 1936 Ford has won ten times, and a

1916 to 1917 Hudson won eight times, including our 2019 race. The British entries which finished were our TF, a 1953 Sunbeam Alpine, a 1963 Jaguar E Type, and a 1973 Jensen Interceptor. British non-finishers were a 1930 Riley 14/6 which had trouble before the race began, and a 1961 MGA which had engine issues about half-way through the race. The support teams were not allowed to ever see us during the day! Their route was different, and they did not get to partake of lunch with us. Each day we stopped for lunch and would be greeted by the towns, given goodie bags and sometimes lunch, and generally treated like royalty. The local media were usually around as well as plenty of interesting cars, most times including local car clubs. In the evening we drove through giant arches set up by the Great Race, with the town name on it. An announcer would tell about each car and the driver and navigator and given another town goodie bag. The streets would be lined with many cars and we were then directed where to park. Kids seemed to like our little MG and I tossed out little stickers with our car race team “The MG Flyers” logo on it, and they rushed for them like they were

candy! We seemed to draw at least our fair share of attention in each town. Our route took us by the Mohave desert and close to Death Valley, the Pacific Ocean for a short time, up Mount Hood, past Mt. Rainier, up Donner Pass, through roads bordered by giant Redwoods, and along the Columbia river. The elevations were from 8,000 feet above sea level with snow alongside the roads and temperatures to match, to close to close to sea level, and sun and heat. We also drove in driving rain and wind. This required our support team to be fussing with the carbs and other items at night. We were fortunate to not have many issues with the car. One issue was the speedometer kept messing up – sometimes being correct and other times spinning wildly. The maker of it was there and it took about 6

days to find the cause. It was in the coil going bad and sending an interrupting signal through the wire. We had a spare coil and all was well. However, we did not have a properly working speedometer until the last three days or so, and it is nigh impossible to place in the money without one. The other issue was a little more serious. We felt an alternator would be better than the stock generator, and rules allowed it, so before leaving Michigan, Steve ordered one. It was one of the newer ones that look exactly like an original generator but inside it was an alternator. He tried it out and it failed after a short time and he returned it and put another one on the car. During the race, after a couple of days or so, the new one also failed and was not charging. It

  • 12

Keith Murphy and the Great Race (Cont’d)

would get very hot to the touch. Steve and the support team felt the cause was the thick outer generator shell was not allowing the alternator inside to properly cool. We kept the original generator in the truck as a spare, put it on and problem solved! The Great Race was an exceptional lifetime experience, which I recommend to any car enthusiast. Of course I am biased, but feel it is best enjoyed in a T series MG! Hemmings Magazine, beside a picture of our car 41, said “Drivers Steve Rybicki and navigator Keith Murphy brought their 1954 MG TF to compete in the rookie class. They had a finish time of 23 minutes 53 seconds, which is not a bad cumulative score over nine days in a 65-year-old open sports car”. Many cars did not finish the race. Although we did not win any money, all those who finished were given a medal which says ‘TO FINISH IS TO WIN”. I’ll take that!

Dear MG Friends Forgive me for emailing you all together, but I need your help, please, to make everyone in MG Car Club Central Jersey Centre aware of a very special MG-only event that will be happening in July this year only - the first ever competitive rally run exclusively for MG cars. In 2008, with the blessing of the Royal Motor Union of Liège, I revived the Liège-Brescia-Liège rally. This one-off event in 1958 was highly significant. It was the only rally of that era that was run specifically for one group of cars - in that original event, it was cars under 500cc. And it was a very serious rally: non-stop from Thursday evening to Saturday morning, then again from Saturday evening to Sunday evening, covering 3300km including many of the finest passes from Liège-Rome-Liège - Gavia and Stelvio twice (once southbound, once northbound), Vrsic in Slovenia, Passo di Pordoi and many more. And unlike their longer rallies, it is possible to divide the route into manageable sections of 300-350km per day, with nice hotels and interesting visits along the way, plus a day off in beautiful Ljubljana, and complete the round trip from Liège to Liège in 10 days. Keeping the tradition of the original Liège-Brescia-Liège, we run the event for a different specific group of cars each year. Last year it was Triumph TRs - we had 26 TRs from UK, USA, Belgium, France and Spain, and they had a wonderful time - you can read their report at http://www.classicrallypress.co.uk/mediapool/77/772273/data/TR_Action_-_Liege_Brescia_Liege.pdf Now, this year only, Liège-Brescia-Liège is for MGs. We have interest from MGs from supercharged K Magnette to X-Power SV, and confirmed entries from 1948 TC to 1978 MGB. But we only have one North American entry so far. To encourage entries, I am prepared to waive the late payment supplement for any entries from your Club members (we can advise on shipping too). I am attaching the brochure for the rally, and I urge you please to contact me to discuss how we can work together to ensure that your members learn about the event and have the opportunity to join us. Britfestsm 2020 Dear British Car Enthusiast/Vendor: I am the chairman of the MG Car Club Central Jersey Centre Britfestsm 2020 planning committee. The show is for British saloons and sports cars, motorcycles and other vehicles and will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2020 at Horseshoe Lake Park, Succasunna, N.J. Britfestsm is one of the first British car and motorcycle shows of the season in the Northeast and has been held annually since 1992. This year’s Featured Class will be the Triumph TR6. The show, which is very popular with British car and motorcycle enthusiasts, attracts up to 250 vehicles and 800 spectators annually. The show is a popular vote event, with trophies awarded in approximately 20 classes, together with additional trophies for the People’s Choice Award, President’s Award, Best of Featured Class and Best in Show. Dash plaques are given to the first 100 entries. There will also be automobilia and parts vendors and door prizes. You can pre-register for this year’s show using the attached registration form. The form can also be downloaded from our website (www.MGCCNJ.org). If you register by April 15, you save $5.00 off the cost of registration.

Trophy Sponsorship The club is also offering you, your business or organization an opportunity to participate as a sponsor of the trophies awarded to the class winners at a cost of only $100 per class. This is an excellent means to advertise your products or business to hundreds of spectators, car show participants and vendors. We offer the following to all sponsors:

Sponsor’s names will be contained in advertising for the show, on brochures distributed at the show and on the club’s web site mentioned above.

Sponsor’s advertising materials will be included in the registration packages for each car show participant. We prepare 200 registration packages and will need your materials on or before April 15, 2020.

Your company’s name will be announced at the trophy awards. The club will also include your business card or advertising material in the monthly newsletter through April, 2021. If you have a company banner, the club can arrange to display it at the show. If you wish to take a more active part in the show, you may set up a display or table at the show as well.

To register your British car, motorcycle or other vehicle, participate as vendor or to sponsor a trophy class, please complete the appropriate form and return it to me with your check. Checks should be made payable to “MG Car Club CJC” and mailed to me at 12-68 Fourth Street, Fair Lawn, NJ 07410. If you are sponsoring a trophy, please also indicate three choices for class sponsorship, which will be determined on first come, first serve basis. Copies of the registration form for the show, a list of classes of vehicles and the trophy sponsor form are also attached for your convenience and can also be found at the club’s website (www.MGCCNJ.org) as well.

If you have any questions regarding trophy sponsorship, please call/email either Charlie Tregidgo at 201-791-6675 ([email protected]) or Gary Perrault at 973-626-0716 ([email protected]). Very truly yours, Charlie Tregidgo

    Green Table Every Monthly Meeting

Bring it in / give it to a Member! It’s our way to recycle stuff related to our hobby and other good stuff you might have.

Car items are always welcome, as well as other things that you don’t want or need that others could use.

Just put your stuff on the Green Table where “Froggy” resides, and let others help themselves to your treasures.

Share your unwanted stuff with your MG buddies! Someone may treasure it!
