Section 1: Equipment Introduction & Overview

The EAGL Gunshot Detection & Lockdown System uses fully automated equipment designed to provide an immediate response to an active shooter threat. This system detects gunshots within defined areas and relays that gunshot detection information to additional system components capable of controlling not only facility access but also providing law enforcement agencies with threat assessment information. Additionally, this system can disseminate threat assessment information via text and email. Thus, the EAGL System responds to active shooter threats by providing both access control and notification.

The EAGL System can be constructed in various configurations to include integration options for existing access & alarm systems and components. A basic EAGL Gunshot Detection & Lockdown System can consist of an EAGL Control Unit, a Gateway and several FireFly® Wireless Ballistic Sensors.

Photo 1, EAGL System Control Unit Photo 2, FireFly® Wireless Ballistic Sensor

EAGL Control Unit provides system control through predetermined protocols and User interface. The unit is self-contained and ties into existing ethernet systems. The EAGL Control Unit receives threat detection data from Gateways which wirelessly connect to the FireFly® sensors.

The EAGL System uses proven science developed by the Department of Energy. This science produced patented technology, the FireFly® Wireless Ballistic Sensor, for gunshot detection. Integrating these sensors with the EAGL Gunshot Detection & Lockdown System allows the system to process threat assessment data.

Section 2: System Accessibility Levels

The EAGL Gunshot Detection & Lockdown System currently has a system access hierarchy consisting of three User interface levels. Those levels are: Basic User, Administration and Integrator. Each User interface level provides tiered system access control either enabling or disabling certain system features. Each hierarchy level is explained below.

Basic User: This level provides the most basic interface features. Although this level limits system

accessibility to administration and design protocols, all system monitoring capabilities are functional.

Administration: This level allows administration functions that are disabled in the Basic User level.

Certain system protocols not only can be accessed but also modified. This control tier can also monitor system functions and add or remove system Users.

Integrator: This tier level provides the highest order of system access and is normally reserved for

use by the system installer and system manufacturer.

**NOTE: All User levels use “Point-N-Click” technology to enable or disable system features via “Soft Buttons”!

Section 8: Hardware Details & Operation As mentioned in the Basic User section, the basic EAGL Emergency Automatic Lockdown System is comprised of three major subsystems. They include: the EAGL Gunshot Detection & Lockdown System Control Unit, a Gateway and several FireFly® Wireless Ballistic Sensors.

The photo below shows the EAGL Control Unit front panel NORMAL power indications when the system is operating.

Photo 3, EAGL Control Unit

The representation above illustrates NORMAL power conditions. Should external or internal power faults be detected by the EAGL Control Unit, the power indications will be different depending upon fault conditions.

For example, a primary input VAC power loss will cause the RED indicator to extinguish. The GREEN VDC Output indicator should still be illuminated but the YELLOW indicator should also be illuminated. Once input VAC power is restored, the EAGL Control Unit power indicators will revert to the NORMAL states seen above.

Additional information regarding electrical power and device protection is found in Section 7: System Requirements.

Section 8: Hardware Details & Operation (cont.) The photo below is of the FireFly® Wireless Ballistic Sensor. These sensors can be used in both exterior and interior applications. As for function, these sensors detect and process sound energy to determine if the detected sound represents a gunshot. The FireFly® Sensor has a single indicator capable of providing several conditions.

Photo 4, FireFly® Wireless Ballistic Sensor

The FireFly® Sensor is completely self-contained. When integrated with the EAGL Gunshot Detection & Lockdown System, the sensor sends a status signal to the EAGL Control Unit via a Gateway. This status signal or Heart Beat is currently programmed to activate once per 24-hour period.

Additionally, the FireFly® Sensor processes potential threat sounds. When detected, the sensor indicator will stay illuminated a steady GREEN for about 8 seconds and extinguish. Further threat processing is still occurring during this period. If the detected sounds are validated as a threat the same sensor indicator will blink RED for about 6 seconds and extinguish.

Each FireFly® Sensor contains a battery with an average useful life of ~4 years.

There are three menu items: Add Email Addresses, Set Email Addresses and Delete Email Addresses.

The purpose of these menu items is to assign and administer Notification feature protocols. These feature protocols allow the EAGL Gunshot Detection & Lockdown System to disseminate threat detection information via SMS text and/or Email. When configuring these feature protocols, considerations regarding the amount of time each feature protocol takes to process and distribute threat assessment information should be included. This is crucial when it comes to emergency response. For example, text messaging usually is a faster method to distribute information than Email, but this method is dependent upon both the specific telephone carrier access & text message processing speeds. Email instead, can be a more reliable method of disseminating information and this method can handle larger file volume, but this method is also dependent upon network restrictions and processing speeds. To compensate for the potential dissemination shortcomings of both methods, it may be prudent to configure all Email recipients for both methods.

Section 9: Admin Level Configuration & Use (cont.)

This area concerns controlling FireFly® inputs to the EAGL Gunshot Detection & Lockdown System.

The following figure represents the screen display after selecting the Enable/Disable FireFly®.

Figure 19, ADMIN Enable/Disable FireFly® screen

As displayed above, this screen identifies FireFly® Sensors with system assigned location information and associative camera and detector pairings.

Administrative control to enable or disable individual sensors is available for several reasons. One example reason may allow for maintenance activities occurring on or near the detector. Another reason may include temporary disabling to support other site specific logistical or operational conditions. After selecting the detector(s) Enabled or Disabled condition(s), it is important to select the Set Fireflys icon located at the bottom of the screen to save and initiate your selection(s).

**NOTE: To expedite Enabling or Disabling all FireFly® Sensors, note the two tabs located at the top left on the screen! After selecting appropriate function, also click on the Set Fireflys icon.
