A Message from the Supervisor, Waste Management

Welcome to our 2019 Waste Collection Guide!

I would like to introduce myself, as I recently began as

the Supervisor, Waste Management. I was born and raised

in Norfolk County and am excited to be joining the Public

Works team. My interest in waste management began

as the waste management summer student for Norfolk

County. Upon graduation from York University, I began

my career with the Region of Peel in waste management

for 10 years until June 2018 when I returned home to

Norfolk County.

There are many exciting challenges and changes happening

over the next several years in the waste management

industry. I look forward to working with the residents of

Norfolk County to navigate through these changes. This

year our focus is on contamination in the recycling box and

ensuring the proper materials end up in the correct waste

stream. Check out the sorting guide on page 17 to help

ensure you are using the correct recycling box!

Sincerely,

Merissa Bokla

Try Out Norfolk County's Recycle Coach App! Norfolk County is pleased to announce that we’ve just launched a mobile and web app that contains all of the information people need to know, tailored specifically to their neighbourhoods, about our residential garbage and recycling services.

The mobile and web app, developed by Recycle Coach™, provides residents with a full range of information that is normally on the website or in this Collection Guide. Now, residents don’t have to go hunting for the printed schedule or be sitting in front of their computers. Instead, by downloading Recycle Coach™, Norfolk County residents can check details for regular and special collections and recycling events.

Once residents have downloaded the app, they can set it up to give them regular reminders for any of the collection programs. For example, they can set a reminder for the day that recycling is collected or they can set up alerts just for household hazardous events or leaf and yard waste collection days. Just choose: "Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada" when prompted and enter your address.

Recycling Box Bloopers Here are some materials that don’t belong in your Recycling Box:

Containers with food or liquid still in them: Empty and rinse all food and beverage containers. Food and liquid left behind contaminate other recyclables causing all of the material to be disposed of in the garbage.

Garden Hoses & Lawn Furniture: These items should be placed in your garbage or if they are too large to fit in a garbage bag, take them to a transfer station listed on page 2.

Drinking glasses, Pyrex, mirror, windows, ceramics and light bulbs: Place these items in the garbage. Recycle beverage and food bottles and jars only. Broken glass is dangerous for collection workers. For safety’s sake, place in a sealed box labeled “Broken Glass.”

Coat hangers: Take metal coat hangers to your local dry cleaners for re-use. Plastic hangers should go in your garbage.

REMEMBER: Norfolk County has a two sort system: Containers go in the tall box and paper in the small box. See page 17 for the full sorting guide.

Do not bag your recyclables: Place your recyclables loose in the proper recycling box.

Grasscycle: Reduce Your Leaf & Yard Waste! Recycled grass is free fertilizer, water, and compost.

8 Benefits of Recycled Grass Clippings: • Saves time by eliminating bagging and removing of clippings; • Saves energy by conserving the fuel that’s required to haul

clippings away; • Saves valuable landfill space; • Encourages a healthier stand of grass; • Releases nutrients to the soil; • Grass clippings decomposition may substantially enhance soil

microbial activity; • Saves money; • And research indicates that significant amounts of nutrients, mainly

nitrogen, could be returned to the soil by grasscycling which in turn reduces fertilizer use and cost.*

Tips for successful grasscycling:

• Set your mower height to 2.5 inches (6 cm).

• Keep your mower blade(s) sharp.

• Take care to cut no more than one-third of the grass blade height

at a time. • Mow frequently to produce small clippings which will decompose faster.

• Mow when the lawn is dry to prevent clumping.

Take Pride Keep Norfolk County clean and beautiful: put a stop to illegal dumping.

Dumping any material on public or private property is illegal. It also makes our

community less attractive, threatens human and wildlife health, and requires

costly clean-up.

Help set a good example: do not dump or litter.

See page 2 for transfer station information to properly dispose of your waste.

If you witness illegal dumping, please call By-law Reception 519-426-5870 x 6015 or Public Works at 519-582-2100.

Try to get the license plate number, and make note of the date, time and

location of activity.

Remember, illegal dumping is a serious offense that may result in fines

and/or legal action.

Recycling Tips & Meeting the 4 Bag Limit:

• All your recyclables must be curbside by 7 a.m. on your collection day.

• Do not overload recycling boxes. To reduce wind-blown litter, boxes may

be stacked. Do not place recyclables in clear/blue plastic bags.

• Cardboard should be flattened and bundled (max. 75 cm x 75 cm x

20 cm).

• Extra/overflow recycling may be put in similar sized containers, please

separate your papers from containers.

• Place your material at the edge of the curb on your property either on the

grass or on your driveway, not on the road way.

• Keep areas adjacent to collection areas clear of obstacles like basketball

and hockey nets.

Tips that may help you reduce waste:

• Review the acceptable recycling box materials.

• Consider backyard composting. 30% of household garbage is

compostable at home. (The County offers backyard composters

for sale - see page 13)

• Use the leaf and yard waste collection weeks or depots.

(see page 8)

• Look for take back and drop off depots for certain materials

such as scrap metal, HHW, and electronics.

• Donate reusable items to charities, friends or relatives.

• Take the material to the local transfer station (regular tipping

fees apply) minimum of $16 or $122 per metric tonne.

• Consider a rental bin from a local waste management

company.

Composting Tips Composting is a natural process in which organic materials decompose, and

become a nutrient-rich soil amendment. It aids erosion control, promotes soil

fertility, and stimulates healthy root development. Your lawn and garden will

love it!

Here are some common composting questions:

How long will it take to compost?

• Composting can take from 3 to 18 months, depending upon how

well the pile is maintained.

• A dry or frozen pile decomposes more slowly, as does one that

is never turned.

• A one-inch (2.5 cm) layer of finished compost or garden soil spread

on top of kitchen scraps will speed things up.

• Compost is ready when its texture is crumbly and it has a pleasant,

earthy smell.

How do I ensure our compost doesn’t smell unpleasant?

• Avoid composting meat, fish or dairy items, as well as: bones, pet waste/

litter, cooking oil, and toxic or diseased plants and weeds.

• Aerate compost regularly by turning it.

• Add dry materials if it is too wet.

• Shredded paper is a great addition to compost that is too wet.

• Bury fruit and vegetable trimmings at least 6 inches (15 cm) deep.

Composters can be purchased in Delhi at 183 Main Street of Delhi (519-582-2100

or 519-428-0020) or in Langton at 22 Albert Street (519-875-4485). Please call for pricing information.
